Abstract: The current standard model of cosmology successfully describes a variety of measurements, but the nature of its main ingredients, dark matter and dark energy, remains unknown. Euclid is a medium-class mission in the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 programme of the European Space Agency (ESA) that will provide high-resolution optical imaging, as well as near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy, over about 14,000 deg^2 of extragalactic sky. In addition to accurate weak lensing and clustering measurements that probe structure formation over half of the age of the Universe, its primary probes for cosmology, these exquisite data will enable a wide range of science. This paper provides a high-level overview of the mission, summarising the survey characteristics, the various data-processing steps, and data products. 2. Classifying Modified Gravity and Dark Energy Theories with Bayesian Neural Networks: Massive Neutrinos, Baryonic Feedback, and the Theoretical Error

Abstract: We study the capacity of Bayesian Neural Networks (BNNs) to detect new physics in the dark matter power spectrum. As in previous studies, the Bayesian Cosmological Network (BaCoN) classifies spectra into one of 5 classes: $\Lambda$CDM, $f(R)$, $w$CDM, Dvali-Gabadaze-Porrati (DGP) gravity and a 'random' class, with this work extending it to include the effects of massive neutrinos and baryonic feedback. We further develop the treatment of theoretical errors in BaCoN-II, investigating several approaches and identifying the one that best allows the trained network to generalise to other power spectrum modelling prescriptions. In particular, we compare power spectra data produced by EuclidEmulator2, HMcode and halofit, all supplemented with the halo model reaction to model beyond-$\Lambda$CDM physics. We investigate BNN-classifiers trained on these sets of spectra, adding in Stage-IV survey noise and various theoretical error models. Using our optimal theoretical error model, our fiducial classifier achieves a total classification accuracy of $\sim$ 95% when it is trained on EuclidEmulator2-based spectra with modification parameters drawn from a Gaussian distribution centred around $\Lambda$CDM ($f(R)$: $\sigma_{fR0} = 10^{-5.5}$, DGP: $\sigma_{r\mathrm{c}} = 0.173$, $w$CDM: $\sigma_{w0} = 0.097$, $\sigma_{wa}=0.32$). Abstract: We investigate the approximations needed to efficiently predict the large-scale clustering of matter and dark matter halos in beyond-$\Lambda$CDM scenarios. We examine the normal branch of the Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati model, the Hu-Sawicki $f(R)$ model, a slowly evolving dark energy, an interacting dark energy model and massive neutrinos. For each, we test approximations for the perturbative kernel calculations, including the omission of screening terms and the use of perturbative kernels based on the Einstein-de Sitter universe; we explore different infrared-resummation schemes, tracer bias models and a linear treatment of massive neutrinos; we employ two models for redshift space distortions, the Taruya-Nishimishi-Saito prescription and the Effective Field Theory of Large-Scale Structure. This work further provides a preliminary validation of the codes being considered by Euclid for the spectroscopic clustering probe in beyond-$\Lambda$CDM scenarios. We calculate and compare the $\chi^2$ statistic to assess the different modelling choices. This is done by fitting the spectroscopic clustering predictions to measurements from numerical simulations and perturbation theory-based mock data. We compare the behaviour of this statistic in the beyond-$\Lambda$CDM cases, as a function of the maximum scale included in the fit, to the baseline $\Lambda$CDM case. We find that the Einstein-de Sitter approximation without screening is surprisingly accurate for all cases when comparing to the halo clustering monopole and quadrupole obtained from simulations. Our results suggest that the inclusion of multiple redshift bins, higher-order multipoles, higher-order clustering statistics (such as the bispectrum) and photometric probes such as weak lensing, will be essential to extract information on massive neutrinos, modified gravity and dark energy., Comment: 29 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables, 3 appendices. Abstract: In this paper we investigate the impact of lensing magnification on the analysis of Euclid's spectroscopic survey, using the multipoles of the 2-point correlation function for galaxy clustering. We determine the impact of lensing magnification on cosmological constraints, and the expected shift in the best-fit parameters if magnification is ignored. We consider two cosmological analyses: i) a full-shape analysis based on the $\Lambda$CDM model and its extension $w_0w_a$CDM and ii) a model-independent analysis that measures the growth rate of structure in each redshift bin. We adopt two complementary approaches in our forecast: the Fisher matrix formalism and the Markov chain Monte Carlo method. The fiducial values of the local count slope (or magnification bias), which regulates the amplitude of the lensing magnification, have been estimated from the Euclid Flagship simulations. We use linear perturbation theory and model the 2-point correlation function with the public code coffe. For a $\Lambda$CDM model, we find that the estimation of cosmological parameters is biased at the level of 0.4-0.7 standard deviations, while for a $w_0w_a$CDM dynamical dark energy model, lensing magnification has a somewhat smaller impact, with shifts below 0.5 standard deviations. In a model-independent analysis aiming to measure the growth rate of structure, we find that the estimation of the growth rate is biased by up to $1.2$ standard deviations in the highest redshift bin. As a result, lensing magnification cannot be neglected in the spectroscopic survey, especially if we want to determine the growth factor, one of the most promising ways to test general relativity with Euclid. We also find that, by including lensing magnification with a simple template, this shift can be almost entirely eliminated with minimal computational overhead., Comment: 23 pages, 14 figures

Abstract: The future Euclid space satellite mission will offer an invaluable opportunity to constrain modifications to Einstein's general relativity at cosmic scales. We focus on modified gravity models characterised, at linear scales, by a scale-independent growth of perturbations while featuring different testable types of derivative screening mechanisms at smaller non-linear scales. We considered three specific models, namely JBD, a scalar-tensor theory with a flat potential, the nDGP gravity, a braneworld model in which our Universe is a four-dimensional brane embedded in a five-dimensional Minkowski space-time, and $k$-mouflage (KM) gravity, an extension of $k$-essence scenarios with a universal coupling of the scalar field to matter. In preparation for real data, we provide forecasts from spectroscopic and photometric primary probes by Euclid on the cosmological parameters and the additional parameters of the models, respectively, $\omega_{\rm BD}$, $\Omega_{\rm rc}$ and $\epsilon_{2,0}$. The forecast analysis employs the Fisher matrix method applied to weak lensing (WL); photometric galaxy clustering (GCph), spectroscopic galaxy clustering (GCsp) and the cross-correlation (XC) between GCph and WL. In an optimistic setting at 68.3\% confidence interval, we find the following percentage relative errors with Euclid alone: for $\log_{10}{\omega_{\rm BD}}$, with a fiducial value of $\omega_{\rm BD}=800$, 27.1\% using GCsp alone, 3.6\% using GCph+WL+XC and 3.2\% using GCph+WL+XC+GCsp; for $\log_{10}{\Omega_{\rm rc}}$, with a fiducial value of $\Omega_{\rm rc}=0.25$, we find 93.4\%, 20\% and 15\% respectively; and finally, for $\epsilon_{2,0}=-0.04$, we find 3.4\%, 0.15\%, and 0.14\%. Abstract: $\textit{Euclid}$ will provide a powerful compilation of data including spectroscopic redshifts, the angular clustering of galaxies, weak lensing cosmic shear, and the cross-correlation of these last two photometric observables. In this study we extend recently presented $\textit{Euclid}$ forecasts into the Hu-Sawicki $f(R)$ cosmological model, a popular extension of the Hilbert-Einstein action that introduces an universal modified gravity force in a scale-dependent way. Our aim is to estimate how well future $\textit{Euclid}$ data will be able to constrain the extra parameter of the theory, $f_{R0}$, for the range in which this parameter is still allowed by current observations. For the spectroscopic probe, we use a phenomenological approach for the scale dependence of the growth of perturbations in the terms related to baryon acoustic oscillations and redshift-space distortions. For the photometric observables, we use a fitting formula that captures the modifications in the non-linear matter power spectrum caused by the $f(R)$ model. We show that, in an optimistic setting, and for a fiducial value of $f_{R0} = 5 \times 10^{-6}$, $\textit{Euclid}$ alone will be able to constrain the additional parameter $\log f_{R0}$ at the $3\%$ level, using spectroscopic galaxy clustering alone; at the $1.4\%$ level, using the combination of photometric probes on their own; and at the $1\%$ level, using the combination of spectroscopic and photometric observations. This last constraint corresponds to an error of the order of $6 \times 10^{-7}$ at the $1\sigma$ level on the model parameter $f_{R0} = 5 \times 10^{-6}$. We report also forecasted constraints for $f_{R0} = 5 \times 10^{-5}$ and $f_{R0} = 5 \times 10^{-7}$ and show that in the optimistic scenario, $\textit{Euclid}$ will be able to distinguish these models from $\Lambda\mathrm{CDM}$ at more than 3$\sigma$. 7. Fast and accurate predictions of the nonlinear matter power spectrum for general models of Dark Energy and Modified Gravity

Abstract: We embed linear and nonlinear parametrisations of beyond standard cosmological physics in the halo model reaction framework, providing a model-independent prescription for the nonlinear matter power spectrum. As an application, we focus on Horndeski theories, using the Effective Field Theory of Dark Energy (EFTofDE) to parameterise linear and quasi-nonlinear perturbations. In the nonlinear regime we investigate both a nonlinear parameterised-post Friedmannian (nPPF) approach as well as a physically motivated and approximate phenomenological model based on the error function (Erf). We compare the parameterised approaches' predictions of the nonlinear matter power spectrum to the exact solutions, as well as state-of-the-art emulators, in an evolving dark energy scenario and two well studied modified gravity models, finding sub-percent agreement in the reaction using the Erf model at $z\leq1$ and $k\leq 5~h/{\rm Mpc}$. This suggests only an additional 3 free constants, above the background and linear theory parameters, are sufficient to model nonlinear, non-standard cosmology in the matter power spectrum at scales down to $k \leq 3h~/{\rm Mpc}$ within $2\%$ accuracy. Abstract: The Copernican principle, the notion that we are not at a special location in the Universe, is one of the cornerstones of modern cosmology and its violation would invalidate the Friedmann-Lema\^{\i}tre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) metric, causing a major change in our understanding of the Universe. Thus, it is of fundamental importance to perform observational tests of this principle. We determine the precision with which future surveys will be able to test the Copernican principle and their ability to detect any possible violations. We forecast constraints on the inhomogeneous Lema\^{\i}tre-Tolman-Bondi model with a cosmological constant $\Lambda$ ($\Lambda$LTB), basically a cosmological constant $\Lambda$ and cold dark matter ($\Lambda$CDM) model, but endowed with a spherical inhomogeneity. We consider combinations of currently available data and simulated Euclid data, together with external data products, based on both $\Lambda$CDM and $\Lambda$LTB fiducial models. These constraints are compared to the expectations from the Copernican principle. When considering the $\Lambda$CDM fiducial model, we find that Euclid data, in combination with other current and forthcoming surveys, will improve the constraints on the Copernican principle by about $30\%$, with $\pm10\%$ variations depending on the observables and scales considered. On the other hand, when considering a $\Lambda$LTB fiducial model, we find that future Euclid data, combined with other current and forthcoming data sets, will be able to detect Gpc-scale inhomogeneities of contrast $-0.1$. We organize these directions through a "science-first" approach that allows us to classify how LISA data can inform theoretical physics in a variety of areas. For each of these theoretical physics classes, we identify the sources that are currently expected to provide the principal contribution to our knowledge, and the areas that need further development. Abstract: Modifications of General Relativity leave their imprint both on the cosmic expansion history through a non-trivial dark energy equation of state, and on the evolution of cosmological perturbations in the scalar and in the tensor sectors. In particular, the modification in the tensor sector gives rise to a notion of gravitational-wave (GW) luminosity distance, different from the standard electromagnetic luminosity distance, that can be studied with standard sirens at GW detectors such as LISA or third-generation ground based experiments. We discuss the predictions for modified GW propagation from some of the best studied theories of modified gravity, such as Horndeski or the more general degenerate higher order scalar-tensor (DHOST) theories, non-local infrared modifications of gravity, bigravity theories and the corresponding phenomenon of GW oscillation, as well as theories with extra or varying dimensions. We show that modified GW propagation is a completely generic phenomenon in modified gravity. We then use a simple parametrization of the effect in terms of two parameters $(\Xi_0,n)$, that is shown to fit well the results from a large class of models, to study the prospects of observing modified GW propagation using supermassive black hole binaries as standard sirens with LISA. We construct mock source catalogs and perform detailed Markov Chain Monte Carlo studies of the likelihood obtained from LISA standard sirens alone, as well as by combining them with CMB, BAO and SNe data to reduce the degeneracies between cosmological parameters. We find that the combination of LISA with the other cosmological datasets allows one to measure the parameter $\Xi_0$ that characterizes modified GW propagation to the percent level accuracy, sufficient to test several modified gravity theories. Abstract: Context. The future Euclid space satellite mission will offer an invaluable opportunity to constrain modifications to Einstein's general relativity at cosmic scales. In this paper, we focus on modified gravity models characterised, at linear scales, by a scale-independent growth of perturbations while featuring different testable types of derivative screening mechanisms at smaller non-linear scales. Aims. We considered three specific models, namely Jordan-Brans-Dicke, a scalar-tensor theory with a flat potential, the normal branch of Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (nDGP) gravity, a braneworld model in which our Universe is a four-dimensional brane embedded in a five-dimensional Minkowski space-time, and k-mouflage gravity, an extension of k-essence scenarios with a universal coupling of the scalar field to matter. In preparation for real data, we provide forecasts from spectroscopic and photometric primary probes by Euclid on the cosmological parameters and the additional parameters of the models, respectively, ωBD, Ωгc and ϵ2,0, which quantify the deviations from general relativity. This analysis will improve our knowledge of the cosmology of these modified gravity models. Methods. The forecast analysis employs the Fisher matrix method applied to weak lensing (WL); photometric galaxy clustering (GCph), spectroscopic galaxy clustering (GCsp) and the cross-correlation (XC) between GCph and WL. For the Euclid survey specifications, we define three scenarios that are characterised by different cuts in the maximum multipole and wave number, to assess the constraining power of non-linear scales. For each model we considered two fiducial values for the corresponding model parameter. Results. In an optimistic setting at 68.3% confidence interval, we find the following percentage relative errors with Euclid alone: for log10ωBD, with a fiducial value of ωBD = 800, 27.1% using GCsp alone, 3.6% using GCph+WL+XC and 3.2% using GCph+WL+XC+GCsp; for log10 Ωгc, with a fiducial value of Ωгc = 0.25, we find 93.4, 20 and 15% respectively; and finally, for ϵ2,0 = −0.04, we find 3.4%, 0.15%, and 0.14%. From the relative errors for fiducial values closer to their ΛCDM limits, we find that most of the constraining power is lost. As in previous studies, the Bayesian Cosmological Network (BaCoN) classifies spectra into one of 5 classes: $\Lambda$CDM, $f(R)$, $w$CDM, Dvali-Gabadaze-Porrati (DGP) gravity and a 'random' class, with this work extending it to include the effects of massive neutrinos and baryonic feedback. We further develop the treatment of theoretical errors in BaCoN-II, investigating several approaches and identifying the one that best allows the trained network to generalise to other power spectrum modelling prescriptions. In particular, we compare power spectra data produced by EuclidEmulator2, HMcode and halofit, all supplemented with the halo model reaction to model beyond-$\Lambda$CDM physics. We investigate BNN-classifiers trained on these sets of spectra, adding in Stage-IV survey noise and various theoretical error models. Using our optimal theoretical error model, our fiducial classifier achieves a total classification accuracy of $\sim$ 95% when it is trained on EuclidEmulator2-based spectra with modification parameters drawn from a Gaussian distribution centred around $\Lambda$CDM ($f(R)$: $\sigma_{fR0} = 10^{-5.5}$, DGP: $\sigma_{r\mathrm{c}} = 0.173$, $w$CDM: $\sigma_{w0} = 0.097$, $\sigma_{wa}=0.32$). This strengthens the promise of this method to glean the maximal amount of unbiased gravitational and cosmological information from forthcoming Stage-IV galaxy surveys.

Abstract: The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) has two scientific objectives of cosmological focus: to probe the expansion rate of the universe, and to understand stochastic gravitational-wave backgrounds and their implications for early universe and particle physics, from the MeV to the Planck scale. However, the range of potential cosmological applications of gravitational-wave observations extends well beyond these two objectives. This publication presents a summary of the state of the art in LISA cosmology, theory and methods, and identifies new opportunities to use gravitational-wave observations by LISA to probe the universe.

Abstract: In this paper we investigate the impact of lensing magnification on the analysis of Euclid's spectroscopic survey using the multipoles of the two-point correlation function for galaxy clustering. We determine the impact of lensing magnification on cosmological constraints as well as the expected shift in the best-fit parameters if magnification is ignored. We considered two cosmological analyses: (i) a full-shape analysis based on the Λ cold dark matter (CDM) model and its extension w0waCDM and (ii) a model-independent analysis that measures the growth rate of structure in each redshift bin. We adopted two complementary approaches in our forecast: the Fisher matrix formalism and the Markov chain Monte Carlo method. The fiducial values of the local count slope (or magnification bias), which regulates the amplitude of the lensing magnification, have been estimated from the Euclid Flagship simulations. We used linear perturbation theory and modelled the two-point correlation function with the public code coffe. For a ΛCDM model, we find that the estimation of cosmological parameters is biased at the level of 0.4–0.7 standard deviations, while for a w0waCDM dynamical dark energy model, lensing magnification has a somewhat smaller impact, with shifts below 0.5 standard deviations. For a model-independent analysis aimed at measuring the growth rate of structure, we find that the estimation of the growth rate is biased by up to 1.2 standard deviations in the highest redshift bin. As a result, lensing magnification cannot be neglected in the spectroscopic survey, especially if we want to determine the growth factor, one of the most promising ways to test general relativity with Euclid. We also find that, by including lensing magnification with a simple template, this shift can be almost entirely eliminated with minimal computational overhead. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) has the potential to reveal wonders about the fundamental theory of nature at play in the extreme gravity regime, where the gravitational interaction is both strong and dynamical. In this white paper, the Fundamental Physics Working Group of the LISA Consortium summarizes the current topics in fundamental physics where LISA observations of gravitational waves can be expected to provide key input. We provide the briefest of reviews to then delineate avenues for future research directions and to discuss connections between this working group, other working groups and the consortium work package teams. These connections must be developed for LISA to live up to its science potential in these areas.

Abstract: In this paper, which is of programmatic rather than quantitative nature, we aim to further delineate and sharpen the future potential of the LISA mission in the area of fundamental physics. Given the very broad range of topics that might be relevant to LISA, we present here a sample of what we view as particularly promising directions, based in part on the current research interests of the LISA scientific community in the area of fundamental physics. We organize these directions through a "science-first" approach that allows us to classify how LISA data can inform theoretical physics in a variety of areas. For each of these theoretical physics classes, we identify the sources that are currently expected to provide the principal contribution to our knowledge, and the areas that need further development. The classification presented here should not be thought of as cast in stone, but rather as a fluid framework that is amenable to change with the flow of new insights in theoretical physics.

Abstract: The propagation speed of gravitational waves, c , has been tightly constrained by the binary neutron star merger GW170817 and its electromagnetic counterpart, under the assumption of a frequency-independent c . Drawing upon arguments from Effective Field Theory and quantum gravity, we discuss the possibility that modifications of General Relativity allow for transient deviations of c from the speed of light at frequencies well below the band of current ground-based detectors. We motivate two representative Ansätze for c (f), and study their impact upon the gravitational waveforms of massive black hole binary mergers detectable by the LISA mission. We forecast the constraints on c (f) obtainable from individual systems and a population of sources, from both inspiral and a full inspiral-merger-ringdown waveform. We show that LISA will enable us to place stringent independent bounds on departures from General Relativity in unexplored low-frequency regimes, even in the absence of an electromagnetic counterpart.

Abstract: Although general relativity underlies modern cosmology, its applicability on cosmological length scales has yet to be stringently tested. Such a test has recently been proposed, using a quantity, EG, that combines measures of large-scale gravitational lensing, galaxy clustering and structure growth rate. The combination is insensitive to `galaxy bias' (the difference between the clustering of visible galaxies and invisible dark matter) and is thus robust to the uncertainty in this parameter. Modified theories of gravity generally predict values of EG different from the general relativistic prediction because, in these theories, the `gravitational slip' (the difference between the two potentials that describe perturbations in the gravitational metric) is non-zero, which leads to changes in the growth of structure and the strength of the gravitational lensing effect. Here we report that EG = 0.39+/-0.06 on length scales of tens of megaparsecs, in agreement with the general relativistic prediction of EG~0.4. The measured value excludes a model within the tensor-vector-scalar gravity theory, which modifies both Newtonian and Einstein gravity. However, the relatively large uncertainty still permits models within f() theory, which is an extension of general relativity. A fivefold decrease in uncertainty is needed to rule out these models.

36. Cosmological constraints on DGP braneworld gravity with brane tension

Abstract: We perform a Markov chain Monte Carlo analysis of the self-accelerating and normal branch of Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati braneworld gravity. By adopting a parametrized post-Friedmann description of gravity, we utilize all of the cosmic microwave background data, including the largest scales, and its correlation with galaxies in addition to the geometrical constraints from supernovae distances and the Hubble constant. We find that on both branches brane tension or a cosmological constant is required at high significance with no evidence for the unique Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati modifications. The crossover scale must therefore be substantially greater than the Hubble scale H0rc>3 and 3.5 at the 95% C.L. with and without uncertainties from spatial curvature. With spatial curvature, the limit from the normal branch is substantially assisted by the galaxy cross correlation which highlights its importance in constraining infrared modifications to gravity.

Arun et al., The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) has the potential to reveal wonders about the fundamental theory of nature at play in the extreme gravity regime, where the gravitational interaction is both strong and dynamical. In this white paper, the Fundamental Physics Working Group of the LISA Consortium summarizes the current topics in fundamental physics where LISA observations of gravitational waves can be expected to provide key input. We provide the briefest of reviews to then delineate avenues for future research directions and to discuss connections between this working group, other working groups and the consortium work package teams. These connections must be developed for LISA to live up to its science potential in these areas., E. Abstract: Euclid Consortium: S. Nesseris et al., [Context] The standard cosmological model is based on the fundamental assumptions of a spatially homogeneous and isotropic universe on large scales. An observational detection of a violation of these assumptions at any redshift would immediately indicate the presence of new physics., [Aims] We quantify the ability of the Euclid mission, together with contemporary surveys, to improve the current sensitivity of null tests of the canonical cosmological constant Λ and the cold dark matter (ΛCDM) model in the redshift range 0, [Methods] We considered both currently available data and simulated Euclid and external data products based on a ΛCDM fiducial model, an evolving dark energy model assuming the Chevallier-Polarski-Linder parameterization or an inhomogeneous Lemaître-Tolman-Bondi model with a cosmological constant Λ, and carried out two separate but complementary analyses: a machine learning reconstruction of the null tests based on genetic algorithms, and a theory-agnostic parametric approach based on Taylor expansion and binning of the data, in order to avoid assumptions about any particular model., [Results] We find that in combination with external probes, Euclid can improve current constraints on null tests of the ΛCDM by approximately a factor of three when using the machine learning approach and by a further factor of two in the case of the parametric approach. However, we also find that in certain cases, the parametric approach may be biased against or missing some features of models far from ΛCDM., [Conclusions] Our analysis highlights the importance of synergies between Euclid and other surveys. Abstract: In the context of forthcoming galaxy surveys, to ensure unbiased constraints on cosmology and gravity when using non-linear structure information, percent-level accuracy is required when modelling the power spectrum. This calls for frameworks that can accurately capture the relevant physical effects, while allowing for deviations from $\Lambda$CDM. Massive neutrino and baryonic physics are two of the most relevant such effects. We present an integration of the halo model reaction frameworks for massive neutrinos and beyond-$\Lambda$CDM cosmologies. The integrated halo model reaction, combined with a pseudo power spectrum modelled by HMCode2020 is then compared against $N$-body simulations that include both massive neutrinos and an $f(R)$ modification to gravity. We find that the framework is 4% accurate down to at least $k\approx 3 \, h/{\rm Mpc}$ for a modification to gravity of $|f_{\rm R0}|\leq 10^{-5}$ and for the total neutrino mass $M_\nu \equiv \sum m_\nu \leq 0.15$ eV. We also find that the framework is 4% consistent with EuclidEmulator2 as well as the Bacco emulator for \B{most of the considered} $\nu w$CDM cosmologies down to at least $k \approx 3 \, h$/Mpc. Finally, we compare against hydrodynamical simulations employing HMCode2020's baryonic feedback modelling on top of the halo model reaction. For $\nu \Lambda$CDM cosmologies we find 2% accuracy for $M_\nu \leq 0.48$eV down to at least $k\approx 5h$/Mpc. Similar accuracy is found when comparing to $\nu w$CDM hydrodynamical simulations with $M_\nu = 0.06$eV. This offers the first non-linear, theoretically general means of accurately including massive neutrinos for beyond-$\Lambda$CDM cosmologies, and further suggests that baryonic, massive neutrino and dark energy physics can be reliably modelled independently., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures. 41. Seeking New Physics in Cosmology with Bayesian Neural Networks: Dark Energy and Modified Gravity

Abstract: We study the potential of Bayesian Neural Networks (BNNs) to detect new physics in the dark matter power spectrum, concentrating here on evolving dark energy and modifications to General Relativity. After introducing a new technique to quantify classification uncertainty in BNNs, we train two BNNs on mock matter power spectra produced using the publicly available code $\tt{ReACT}$ in the $k$-range $\left(0.01 - 2.5\right) \, h \mathrm{Mpc}^{-1} $ and redshift bins $\left(0.1,0.478,0.783,1.5\right)$ with Euclid-like noise. The first network classifies spectra into five labels including $\Lambda$CDM, $f(R)$, $w$CDM, Dvali-Gabadaze-Porrati (DGP) gravity and a "random" class whereas the second is trained to distinguish $\Lambda$CDM from non-$\Lambda$CDM. Both networks achieve a comparable training, validation and test accuracy of $\sim 95\%$. Each network is also capable of detecting deviations from $\Lambda$CDM that were not included in the training set, demonstrated with spectra generated using the growth-index $\gamma$. We then quantify the constraining power of each network by computing the smallest deviation from $\Lambda$CDM such that the noise-averaged non-$\Lambda$CDM classification probability is at least $2\sigma$, finding these bounds to be $f_{R0} \lesssim 10^{-7}$, $\Omega_{rc} \lesssim 10^{-2} $, $-1.05 \lesssim w_0 \lesssim 0.95 $, $-0.2 \lesssim w_a \lesssim 0.2 $, $0.52 \lesssim \gamma \lesssim 0.59 $. The bounds on $f(R)$ can be improved by training a specialist network to distinguish solely between $\Lambda$CDM and $f(R)$ power spectra which can detect a non-zero $f_{R0}$ at $\mathcal{O}\left(10^{-8}\right)$ with a confidence $>2\sigma$. Abstract: Accurate predictions for the non-linear matter power spectrum are needed to confront theory with observations in current and near future weak lensing and galaxy clustering surveys. We propose a computationally cheap method to create an emulator for modified gravity models by utilizing existing emulators for $\Lambda$CDM. Using a suite of $N$-body simulations we construct a fitting function for the enhancement of both the linear and non-linear matter power spectrum in the commonly studied Hu-Sawicki $f(R)$ gravity model valid for wave-numbers $k \lesssim 5-10\, h\text{Mpc}^{-1}$ and redshifts $z \lesssim 3$. We show that the cosmology dependence of this enhancement is relatively weak so that our fit, using simulations coming from only one cosmology, can be used to get accurate predictions for other cosmological parameters. We also show that the cosmology dependence can, if needed, be included by using linear theory, approximate $N$-body simulations (such as COLA) and semi-analytical tools like the halo model. Our final fit can easily be combined with any emulator or semi-analytical models for the non-linear $\Lambda$CDM power spectrum to accurately, and quickly, produce a non-linear power spectrum for this particular modified gravity model. The method we use can be applied to fairly cheaply construct an emulator for other modified gravity models. As an application of our fitting formula we use it to compute Fisher-forecasts for how well galaxy clustering and weak lensing in a Euclid-like survey will be at constraining modifications of gravity., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures. Abstract: We perform a Markov Chain Monte Carlo analysis of the self-accelerating and normal branch of Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati braneworld gravity. By adopting a parameterized post-Friedmann description of gravity, we utilize all of the cosmic microwave background data, including the largest scales, and its correlation with galaxies in addition to the geometrical constraints from supernovae distances and the Hubble constant. We find that on both branches brane tension or a cosmological constant is required at high significance with no evidence for the unique Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati modifications. The cross-over scale must therefore be substantially greater than the Hubble scale H_0 r_c > 3 and 3.5 at the 95% CL with and without uncertainties from spatial curvature. 44. Unscreening Modified Gravity in the Matter Power Spectrum.

Abstract: Viable modifications of gravity that may produce cosmic acceleration need to be screened in high-density regions such as the Solar System, where general relativity is well tested. Screening mechanisms also prevent strong anomalies in the large-scale structure and limit the constraints that can be inferred on these gravity models from cosmology. We find that by suppressing the contribution of the screened high-density regions in the matter power spectrum, allowing a greater contribution of unscreened low densities, modified gravity models can be more readily discriminated from the concordance cosmology. Moreover, by variation of density thresholds, degeneracies with other effects may be dealt with more adequately. Specializing to chameleon gravity as a worked example for screening in modified gravity, employing N-body simulations of f(R) models and the halo model of chameleon theories, we demonstrate the effectiveness of this method. We find that a percent-level measurement of the clipped power at k<0.3h/Mpc can yield constraints on chameleon models that are more stringent than what is inferred from Solar System tests or distance indicators in unscreened dwarf galaxies. Finally, we verify that our method is also applicable to the Vainshtein mechanism.

45. Classifying linearly shielded modified gravity models in effective field theory.

Abstract: We study the model space generated by the time-dependent operator coefficients in the effective field theory of the cosmological background evolution and perturbations of modified gravity and dark energy models. We identify three classes of modified gravity models that reduce to Newtonian gravity on the small scales of linear theory. These general classes contain enough freedom to simultaneously admit a matching of the concordance model background expansion history. In particular, there exists a large model space that mimics the concordance model on all linear quasistatic subhorizon scales as well as in the background evolution. Such models also exist when restricting the theory space to operators introduced in Horndeski scalar-tensor gravity. We emphasize that whereas the partially shielded scenarios might be of interest to study in connection with tensions between large and small scale data, with conventional cosmological probes, the ability to distinguish the fully shielded scenarios from the concordance model on near-horizon scales will remain limited by cosmic variance. Novel tests of the large-scale structure remedying this deficiency and accounting for the full covariant nature of the alternative gravitational theories, however, might yield further insights on gravity in this regime.

46. Confirmation of general relativity on large scales from weak lensing and galaxy velocities.

Abstract: Although general relativity underlies modern cosmology, its applicability on cosmological length scales has yet to be stringently tested. Such a test has recently been proposed, using a quantity, E(G), that combines measures of large-scale gravitational lensing, galaxy clustering and structure growth rate. The combination is insensitive to 'galaxy bias' (the difference between the clustering of visible galaxies and invisible dark matter) and is thus robust to the uncertainty in this parameter. Modified theories of gravity generally predict values of E(G) different from the general relativistic prediction because, in these theories, the 'gravitational slip' (the difference between the two potentials that describe perturbations in the gravitational metric) is non-zero, which leads to changes in the growth of structure and the strength of the gravitational lensing effect. Here we report that E(G) = 0.39 +/- 0.06 on length scales of tens of megaparsecs, in agreement with the general relativistic prediction of E(G) approximately 0.4. The measured value excludes a model within the tensor-vector-scalar gravity theory, which modifies both Newtonian and Einstein gravity. However, the relatively large uncertainty still permits models within f(R) theory, which is an extension of general relativity. A fivefold decrease in uncertainty is needed to rule out these models.
