Abstract

The International Muon Collider Collaboration (IMCC) [1] was established in 2020 following the recommendations of the European Strategy for Particle Physics (ESPP) and the implementation of the European Strategy for Particle Physics-Accelerator R&D Roadmap by the Laboratory Directors Group [2], hereinafter referred to as the the European LDG roadmap. The Muon Collider Study (MuC) covers the accelerator complex, detectors and physics for a future muon collider. In 2023, European Commission support was obtained for a design study of a muon collider (MuCol) [3]. This project started on 1st March 2023, with work-packages aligned with the overall muon collider studies. In preparation of and during the 2021-22 U.S. Snowmass process, the muon collider project parameters, technical studies and physics performance studies were performed and presented in great detail. Recently, the P5 panel [4] in the U.S. recommended a muon collider R&D, proposed to join the IMCC and envisages that the U.S. should prepare to host a muon collider, calling this their "muon shot". Abstract

A multi-TeV muon collider offers a spectacular opportunity in the direct exploration of the energy frontier. Offering a combination of unprecedented energy collisions in a comparatively clean leptonic environment, a high energy muon collider has the unique potential to provide both precision measurements and the highest energy reach in one machine that cannot be paralleled by any currently available technology. The topic generated a lot of excitement in Snowmass meetings and continues to attract a large number of supporters, including many from the early career community. In light of this very strong interest within the US particle physics community, Snowmass Energy, Theory and Accelerator Frontiers created a cross-frontier Muon Collider Forum in November of 2020. The Forum has been meeting on a monthly basis and organized several topical workshops dedicated to physics, accelerator technology, and detector R&D. Findings of the Forum are summarized in this report.

Abstract

We study the Higgs pair production process at a muon collider using b-pair decays of the Higgs bosons. Efficient identification and good measurement resolution for the b-jet pair invariant mass are crucial for unearthing the di-Higgs signal. However, the beam-induced background has potential to drastically degrade the performance. We report on the full simulation studies of the degradation of the reconstructed b-jet pair invariant mass in di-Higgs events, considering only the beam-induced background in the calorimeter. Mitigation strategies for the suppression of the beam-induced background are underway. We also report prospects for the measurement of the Standard Model Higgs pair production at the Muon Colliders at various benchmarks of the collider center of mass energy and integrated luminosity using a fast simulation program., Comment: Contribution to Snowmass 2021

Abstract

In this paper we report on the current status of studies on the expected performance for a detector designed to operate in a muon collider environment. Beam-induced backgrounds (BIB) represent the main challenge in the design of the detector and the event reconstruction algorithms. The current detector design aims to show that satisfactory performance can be achieved, while further optimizations are expected to significantly improve the overall performance. We present the characterization of the expected beam-induced background, describe the detector design and software used for detailed event simulations taking into account BIB effects. The expected performance of charged-particle reconstruction, jets, electrons, photons and muons is discussed, including an initial study on heavy-flavor jet tagging. A simple method to measure the delivered luminosity is also described. Overall, the proposed design and reconstruction algorithms can successfully reconstruct the high transverse-momentum objects needed to carry out a broad physics program., Comment: contribution to Snowmass 2021

Abstract

In this paper we report on the current status of studies on the expected performance for a detector designed to operate in a muon collider environment. Beam-induced backgrounds (BIB) represent the main challenge in the design of the detector and the event reconstruction algorithms. The current detector design aims to show that satisfactory performance can be achieved, while further optimizations are expected to significantly improve the overall performance. We present the characterization of the expected beam-induced background, describe the detector design and software used for detailed event simulations taking into account BIB effects. The expected performance of charged-particle reconstruction, jets, electrons, photons and muons is discussed, including an initial study on heavy-flavor jet tagging. A simple method to measure the delivered luminosity is also described. Overall, the proposed design and reconstruction algorithms can successfully reconstruct the high transverse-momentum objects needed to carry out a broad physics program., contribution to Snowmass 2021

Abstract

A multi-TeV muon collider offers a spectacular opportunity in the direct exploration of the energy frontier. Offering a combination of unprecedented energy collisions in a comparatively clean leptonic environment, a high energy muon collider has the unique potential to provide both precision measurements and the highest energy reach in one machine that cannot be paralleled by any currently available technology. The topic generated a lot of excitement in Snowmass meetings and continues to attract a large number of supporters, including many from the early career community. In light of this very strong interest within the US particle physics community, Snowmass Energy, Theory and Accelerator Frontiers created a cross-frontier Muon Collider Forum in November of 2020. The Forum has been meeting on a monthly basis and organized several topical workshops dedicated to physics, accelerator technology, and detector R&D. Findings of the Forum are summarized in this report.

Abstract

We study the Higgs pair production process at a muon collider using b-pair decays of the Higgs bosons. Efficient identification and good measurement resolution for the b-jet pair invariant mass are crucial for unearthing the di-Higgs signal. However, the beam-induced background has potential to drastically degrade the performance. We report on the full simulation studies of the degradation of the reconstructed b-jet pair invariant mass in di-Higgs events, considering only the beam-induced background in the calorimeter. Mitigation strategies for the suppression of the beam-induced background are underway. We also report prospects for the measurement of the Standard Model Higgs pair production at the Muon Colliders at various benchmarks of the collider center of mass energy and integrated luminosity using a fast simulation program., Comment: Contribution to Snowmass 2021

12. Correlation of Sarcopenia With Modified Frailty Index as a Predictor of Outcome in Critically Ill Elderly Patients: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Abstract

Introduction: Frailty phenotype represents weight loss, decreased functional and physical capacity and activity, falls, slow gait, and memory impairment. Sarcopenia is a generalized and progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass, strength, and function, which occurs due to primary effects of aging and secondary effects of other causes including diseases, malnutrition, and inactivity., Materials and Methods: This prospective cross-sectional study was performed on 70 critically ill geriatric patients (of age > 60 years) admitted in Medicine ICU (MICU) from December 2020 to May 2021 at a rural medical school at Wardha in central rural India. We assessed sarcopenia in all the patients by the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP) criteria and compared it with the modified frailty index. All the patients were divided in sarcopenic and non-sarcopenic groups; frailty index was applied, and outcomes were measured in terms of mortality, the need for ventilation, and length of ICU stay., Results: In this study, the mean age of the patients was 68.61 ± 5.88 years in the sarcopenic group and 69.10 ± 6.31 years in the non-sarcopenic group. Eighteen (42.86%) patients in the sarcopenic group were severely frail, whereas eight (28.57%) patients in the non-sarcopenic group (p = 0.532) were not. In the sarcopenic severely frail group, mortality was six (14.29%), and eight (19.05%) required ventilation (p = 0.001), whereas in the non-sarcopenic severely frail group, mortality as well as the need for ventilation were four (14.29%) (p = 0.0001). Total duration of ICU stays was 4.30 ± 1.07 days in the sarcopenic group (n = 42), whereas it was 3.85 ± 1.23 days in the non-sarcopenic group (n = 28) (p = 0.10)., Conclusion: Our study found that critically ill patients with sarcopenia had more tendency to become frail, thereby increased risk of mortality. Abstract

Purpose: The occurrence of relative afferent pupillary defect (RAPD) secondary to optic nerve diseases and widespread retinal disorders is well established. However, only very few reports of RAPD in macular disorders exist in the literature. In this study, we used automated pupillometer to evaluate RAPD in eyes with macular lesions., Methods: It was a prospective cross-sectional study. A total of 82 patients with choroidal neovascular membrane (CNVM) - 65 unilateral and 17 bilateral macular lesions - were enrolled. RAPD was assessed with an automated pupillometer and macular lesions evaluated with optical coherence tomography (OCT). The length of the ellipsoid zone disruption was measured as the longest length of lesion on the horizontal raster scans and the area of macular lesion was measured manually, mapping the affected area of ellipsoid zone on the enface images., Results: : RAPD scores showed good correlation with the intereye difference in length of maximum ellipsoid zone disruption (r-value = 0.84, P value <0.001) and macular lesion area as measured on OCT in all unilateral cases (r-value = 0.84, P value <0.001). Best-corrected visual acuity was also found to have a significant correlation with lesion size on the OCT as well as the length of ellipsoid zone disruption in unilateral cases., Conclusion: : RAPD evaluated with an automated binocular pupillometer is a noninvasive and objective method to assess macular lesions in CNVMs; it shows good correlation with structural lesion dimensions on OCT in unilateral cases. Further longitudinal studies are needed to assess the significance of these findings in disease progression as well as correlation with lesion response to treatment., Competing Interests: None
