Abstract Background The accuracy of artificial intelligence (AI) and experts in diagnosing early esophageal cancer (EC) and its infiltration depth was summarized and analyzed, thus identifying the advantages of AI over traditional manual diagnosis, with a view to more accurately assisting doctors in evaluating the patients' conditions and improving their cure and survival rates. Methods The PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane, Google, and CNKI databases were searched for relevant literature related to AI diagnosis of early EC and its invasion depth published before August 2023. Summary analysis of pooled sensitivity, specificity, summary receiver operating characteristics (SROC) and area under the curve (AUC) of AI in diagnosing early EC were performed, and Review Manager and Stata were adopted for data analysis. Results A total of 19 studies were enrolled with a low to moderate total risk of bias. The pooled sensitivity of AI for diagnosing early EC was markedly higher than that of novices and comparable to that of endoscopists. Moreover, AI predicted early EC with markedly higher AUCs than novices and experts (0.93 vs. 0.74 vs. 0.89). In addition, pooled sensitivity and specificity in the diagnosis of invasion depth in early EC were higher than that of experts, with AUCs of 0.97 and 0.92, respectively. Conclusion AI‐assistance can diagnose early EC and its infiltration depth more accurately, which can help in its early intervention and the customization of personalized treatment plans. Therefore, AI systems have great potential in the early diagnosis of EC.

"Firstly, Eucommia ulmoides gum (EUG) was epoxidized to obtain epoxidized EUG (EEUG). Then, EEUG grafted silicon dioxide (SiO2) composite (EEUG-g-SiO2) was prepared by wet graf-ting SiO2 onto EEUG. The structure and properties of EEUG-g-SiO2 composite were studied. The results showed that compared with EUG/SiO2 and EEUG/SiO2 mechanical blends, the dispersion of nano SiO2 in EEUG-g-SiO2 vulcanizate was significantly improved and the mechanical properties were greatly improved. Compared with EUG/SiO2 vulcanizates, the tear strength of EEUG-g-SiO2 vulcanizate increased by 30.9%, fatigue resistance increased by 575%, and abrasion decreased by 94%. Compared with EEUG/SiO2 vulcanizate, the tear strength of EEUG-g-SiO2 vulcanizate increased by 10.5%, fatigue resistance increased by 68.6%, abrasion decreased by 72%, and the compression heat build-up decreased significantly."

Objective To evaluate the safety and preliminary efficacy of YSCH-01 (Recombinant L-IFN adenovirus) in subjects with advanced solid tumors.Methods In this single-center, open-label, investigator-initiated trial of YSCH-01, 14 patients with advanced solid tumors were enrolled. The study consisted of two distinct phases: (1) the dose escalation phase and (2) the dose expansion phase; with three dose groups in the dose escalation phase based on dose levels (5.0×109 viral particles (VP)/subject, 5.0×1010 VP/subject, and 5.0×1011 VP/subject). Subjects were administered YSCH-01 injection via intratumoral injections. The safety was assessed using National Cancer Institute Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events V.5.0, and the efficacy evaluation was performed using Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumor V.1.1.Results 14 subjects were enrolled in the study, including 9 subjects in the dose escalation phase and 5 subjects in the dose expansion phase. Of the 13 subjects included in the full analysis set, 4 (30.8%) were men and 9 (69.2%) were women. The most common tumor type was lung cancer (38.5%, 5 subjects), followed by breast cancer (23.1%, 3 subjects) and melanoma (23.1%, 3 subjects). During the dose escalation phase, no subject experienced dose-limiting toxicities. The content of recombinant L-IFN adenovirus genome and recombinant L-IFN protein in blood showed no trend of significant intergroup changes. No significant change was observed in interleukin-6 and interferon-gamma. For 11 subjects evaluated for efficacy, the overall response rate with its 95% CI was 27.3% (6.02% to 60.97%) and the disease control rate with its 95% CI was 81.8% (48.22% to 97.72%). The median progression-free survival was 4.97 months, and the median overall survival was 8.62 months. In addition, a tendency of decrease in the sum of the diameters of target lesions was observed. For 13 subjects evaluated for safety, the overall incidence of adverse events (AEs) was 92.3%, the overall incidence of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) was 84.6%, and the overall incidence of >Grade 3 AEs was 7.7%, while no AEs/ADRs leading to death occurred. The most common AEs were fever (69.2%), nausea (30.8%), vomiting (30.8%), and hypophagia (23.1%).Conclusions The study shows that YSCH-01 injections were safe and well tolerated and exhibited preliminary efficacy in patients with advanced solid tumors, supporting further investigation to evaluate its efficacy and safety.Trial registration number NCT05180851.

Abstract Biominerals, the inorganic minerals of organisms, are known mainly for their physical property-related functions in modern living organisms. Our recent discovery of the enzyme-like activities of nanomaterials, coined as nanozyme, inspires the hypothesis that nano-biominerals might function as enzyme-like catalyzers in cells. Here we report that the iron cores of biogenic ferritins act as natural nanozymes to scavenge superoxide radicals. Through analyzing eighteen representative ferritins from three living kingdoms, we find that the iron core of prokaryote ferritin possesses higher superoxide-diminishing activity than that of eukaryotes. Further investigation reveals that the differences in catalytic capability result from the iron/phosphate ratio changes in the iron core, which is mainly determined by the structures of ferritins. The phosphate in the iron core switches the iron core from single crystalline to amorphous iron phosphate-like structure, resulting in decreased affinity to the hydrogen proton of the ferrihydrite-like core that facilitates its reaction with superoxide in a manner different from that of ferric ions. Furthermore, overexpression of ferritins with high superoxide-diminishing activities in E. coli increases the resistance to superoxide, whereas bacterioferritin knockout or human ferritin knock-in diminishes free radical tolerance, highlighting the physiological antioxidant role of this type of nanozymes.

Abstract This study aimed to explore the potential role and mechanisms of the partner of NOB1 homolog (PNO1) in osteosarcoma. The expression of PNO1 in tumor and adjacent tissue samples was examined using western blotting. Lentiviral transfection was used to establish sh-Ctrl and sh-PNO1 osteosarcoma cell lines. MTT assay, Celigo cell cytometer count, and cell colony formation assay were used to investigate the proliferation of osteosarcoma cells in vitro, whereas xenotransplantation assay was performed for in vivo experiments. Wound-healing and Transwell assays were chosen to verify the migration and invasion of osteosarcoma cells. Flow cytometry assay and caspase-3/7 activity analysis were adopted for the analysis of cell apoptosis and cell cycle. Finally, transcriptome sequencing and bioinformatics analysis were adopted to explore the acting mechanisms. The expression of PNO1 was higher in osteosarcoma tissues than that in adjacent tissues. Down-regulation of PNO1 inhibited the proliferation, migration, and invasion, and induced cell apoptosis and cell cycle arrest of osteosarcoma cells. Furthermore, according to transcriptome sequencing and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway analysis, we found that PNO1 might affect the progression of osteosarcoma via TGF-β and YAP/TAZ signaling pathways. PNO1 could be a potential target for osteosarcoma treatment.

Abstract In recent years, the two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor α-In2Se3 has great potential for applications in the fields of electronics and optoelectronics due to its spontaneous iron electrolysis properties. Through ab initio electronic structure calculations and quantum transport simulations, the interface properties and transport properties of α-In2Se3/Au contacts with different polarization directions are studied, and a two-dimensional α-In2Se3 asymmetric metal contact design is proposed. When α-In2Se3 is polarized upward, it forms an n-type Schottky contact with Au. While when α-In2Se3 is polarized downward, it forms a p-type Schottky contact with Au. More importantly, significant rectification effect is found in the asymmetric Au/α-In2Se3/Au field-effect transistor. The carrier transports under positive and negative bias voltages are found to be dominated by thermionic excitation and tunneling, respectively. These findings provide guidance for the further design of 2D α-In2Se3-based transistors.

Abstract The incorporation of heteroatoms into carbon aerogels (CAs) can lead to structural distortions and changes in active sites due to their smaller size and electronegativity compared to pure carbon. However, the evolution of the electronic structure from single‐atom doping to heteroatom codoping in CAs has not yet been thoroughly investigated, and the impact of codoping on potassium ion (K+) storage and diffusion pathways as electrode material remains unclear. In this study, experimental and theoretical simulations were conducted to demonstrate that heteroatom codoping, composed of multiple heteroatoms (O/N/B) with different properties, has the potential to improve the electrical properties and stability of CAs compared to single‐atom doping. Electronic states near the Fermi level have revealed that doping with O/N/B generates a greater number of active centers on adjacent carbon atoms than doping with O and O/N atoms. As a result of synergy with enhanced wetting ability (contact angle of 9.26°) derived from amino groups and hierarchical porous structure, ON‐CA has the most optimized adsorption capacity (−1.62 eV) and diffusion barrier (0.12 eV) of K+. The optimal pathway of K+ in ON‐CA is along the carbon ring with N or O doping. As K+ storage material for supercapacitors and ion batteries, it shows an outstanding specific capacity and capacitance, electrochemical stability, and rate performance. Especially, the assembled symmetrical K+ supercapacitor demonstrates an energy density of 51.8 Wh kg−1, an ultrahigh power density of 443 W kg−1, and outstanding cycling stability (maintaining 83.3% after 10,000 cycles in 1 M KPF6 organic electrolyte). This research provides valuable insights into the design of high‐performance potassium ion storage materials.

Abstract The success of arsenic in degrading PML‐RARα oncoprotein illustrates the great anti‐leukemia value of inorganics. Inspired by this, the therapeutic effect of inorganic selenium on t(8; 21) leukemia is studied, which has shown promising anti‐cancer effects on solid tumors. A leukemia‐targeting selenium nanomedicine is rationally built with bioengineered protein nanocage and is demonstrated to be an effective epigenetic drug for inducing the differentiation of t(8;21) leukemia. The selenium drug significantly induces the differentiation of t(8;21) leukemia cells into more mature myeloid cells. Mechanistic analysis shows that the selenium is metabolized into bioactive forms in cells, which drives the degradation of the AML1‐ETO oncoprotein by inhibiting histone deacetylases activity, resulting in the regulation of AML1‐ETO target genes. The regulation results in a significant increase in the expression levels of myeloid differentiation transcription factors PU.1 and C/EBPα, and a significant decrease in the expression level of C‐KIT protein, a member of the type III receptor tyrosine kinase family. This study demonstrates that this protein‐nanocaged selenium is a potential therapeutic drug against t(8;21) leukemia through epigenetic regulation.

Abstract This study explored the relationship between femoral lateralization and femoral neck-shaft angle after intramedullary nail (IM) fixation for per trochanteric fractures. 70 patients (AO/OTA 31A1-2) were investigated. Anteroposterior (AP) and lateral X-ray views pre- and post-operation were recorded. Patients were classified into three groups according to the position of the medial cortex of the head-neck fragment to that of the femoral shaft: being slightly superomedial (positive medial cortex support, PMCS), being smoothly contacted (neutral position, NP) or being displaced laterally (negative medial cortex support, NMCS). Patient demographics, femoral lateralization, and neck-shaft angle were measured and statistically analyzed pre- and post-operation. Functional recovery was evaluated by Harris score 3- and 6- months post-operation. All cases ultimately demonstrated radiographic fracture union. AIM: To examine the change of iris volume measured by CASIA2 anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) in glaucoma patients with or without type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and explore if there is a correlation between hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) level and iris volume. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, 72 patients (115 eyes) were divided into two groups: primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) group (55 eyes) and primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) group (60 eyes). Patients in each group were separately classified into patients with or without T2DM. Iris volume and glycosylated HbA1c level were measured and analyzed. RESULTS: In the PACG group, diabetic patients' iris volume was significantly lower than those of non-diabetics (P=0.02), and there was a significant correlation between iris volume and HbA1c level in the PACG group (r=-0.26, P=0.04). However, diabetic POAG patients' iris volume was noticeably higher than those of non-diabetics (P=0.01), and there was a significant correlation between HbA1c level and iris volume (r=0.32, P=0.02). CONCLUSION: Diabetes mellitus impact iris volume size, as seen by increased iris volume in the POAG group and decreased iris volume in the PACG group. In addition, iris volume is significantly correlated with HbA1c level in glaucoma patients. These findings imply that T2DM may compromise iris ultrastructure in glaucoma patients.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease characterized by oxidative stress that triggers motor neurons loss in the brain and spinal cord. However, the mechanisms underlying the exact role of oxidative stress in ALS-associated neural degeneration are not definitively established. Oxidative stress-generated phospholipid peroxides are known to have extensive physiological and pathological consequences to tissues. Here, we discovered that the deficiency of glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4), an essential antioxidant peroxidase, led to the accumulation of phospholipid peroxides and resulted in a loss of motor neurons in spinal cords of ALS mice. Mutant human SOD1G93A transgenic mice were intrathecally injected with neuron-targeted adeno-associated virus (AAV) expressing GPX4 (GPX4-AAV) or phospholipid peroxidation inhibitor, ferrostatin-1. The results showed that impaired motor performance and neural loss induced by SOD1G93A toxicity in the lumbar spine were substantially alleviated by ferrostatin-1 treatment and AAV-mediated GPX4 delivery. In addition, the denervation of neuron-muscle junction and spinal atrophy in ALS mice were rescued by neural GPX4 overexpression, suggesting that GPX4 is essential for the motor neural maintenance and function. In comparison, conditional knockdown of Gpx4 in the spinal cords of Gpx4fl/fl mice triggered an obvious increase of phospholipid peroxides and the occurrence of ALS-like motor phenotype. Altogether, our findings underscore the importance of GPX4 in maintaining phospholipid redox homeostasis in the spinal cord and presents GPX4 as an attractive therapeutic target for ALS treatment.

In large equivalent explosion tests, the method of calculating blast wave parameters by the plastic deformation angle of a cantilever beam can effectively avoid the problem of power supply, storage, communication, and low survival rate of conventional blast wave sensors. In this paper, by means of theoretical analysis and numerical simulation, the deformation response of a pure aluminum cantilever beam with different scaled distances is calculated, and the relationship between the plastic bending angle and blast wave parameters is obtained, which provides a novel and effective method for the measurement of blast wave parameters. The experimental results show that the deformation of the cantilever beam is mainly dominated by the impulse load and the error of this measurement method is within 15%. This method can provide a complementary approach to more precise but complex sensor measurement and can effectively evaluate the impulse in the explosion accident outside.

To realize clean dyeing of cotton fabrics, a new modification process was proposed. First, oxidized cotton fabrics were obtained by using 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-oxyl radical and sodium hypochlorite in the form of selective oxidation. Cationic cotton fabrics were prepared by the Schiff base reaction between polyhexamethylene guanidine and oxidized cotton fabrics. The chemical structure and surface morphology of the modified cotton fabrics were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope. Salt-free dyeing of modified cotton fabrics with four commercial reactive dyes was carried out, which was compared with the raw cotton fabrics dyed in the conventional dyeing. The result revealed that the color fastness of cotton cloth before and after modification was similar. The exhaustion rate and the total utilization of modified cotton fabrics increased by 20–30% and 30%, respectively. At the same time, the fixation rate reached more than 90%. In addition, mechanical properties of modified fabrics could be fully met with the application standard for dyed fabrics.

This study took 'context' as a focal point in the context-based approach and its investigation was anchored on an analytical framework, which is composed of three dimensions of context: origins, intentions, and occasions. Content analysis was employed as the research methodology with 878 contexts identified from 96 copies of awarded chemistry lesson plans being the analysis targets. The occurrence of context adopted in these chemistry lesson plans was analysed along the three dimensions, each of which comprises three sub-dimensions. For each dimension, content analysis focused on the proportion of three sub-dimensions, different proportions between junior and senior high schools, and the changing trends of the three sub-dimensions during the period from 2001 to 2020. As found in this study, discrepancies existed in the proportions of the sub-dimensions of origins, intentions, and occasions of context that were adopted by chemistry teachers, and some significant differences lay in chemistry teaching between junior and senior high schools. The findings are discussed against the social background in Macao, where this study took place. This study has provided several implications for the research and practice of the context-based approach in chemistry education and beyond.

AIM: To investigate the distribution of conjunctival lymphatic vessels in New Zealand white rabbits and its relationship with age.METHODS: Subconjunctival trypan blue was injected in four quadrants(nasal, superior, temporal, and inferior)and recorded videos. The number of lymphatic outflow pathways arising from the blebs was counted. The difference in the number of lymphatic outflow pathways across the quadrants of each group was tested by single-factor analysis of variance. Paired t-test was used to compare the differences in the number of lymphatic outflow pathways in the same rabbit quadrants across different ages.RESULTS: In New Zealand white rabbits, thick annular lymphatic vessels were mainly distributed near the limbus part of the conjunctiva. The single collecting lymphatic vessels were primarily distributed in the peripheral parts. Although the lymphatic vessels of juvenile rabbits have fewer branches, the number of lymphatic vessels in the different quadrants was no significant difference in each group(all P>0.05)and was no difference between the two age groups(all P >0.05).CONCLUSION:The lymphatic vessels were abundant in rabbit conjunctiva. The number of lymphatic vessels in each quadrant and between two age groups had no significant difference.

Introduction: Zishui‐Qinggan decoction (ZQD) is a classical traditional Chinese medicine formula (TCMF) for alleviating menopausal symptoms (MPS) induced by endocrine therapy in breast cancer patients. In the production of TCMF modern preparations, ethanol precipitation (EP) is a commonly but not fully verified refining process. Objectives: Chemical profiling/serum pharmacochemistry and network pharmacology approaches were integrated for exploring the rationality of the EP process in the production of ZQD modern preparations. Material and methods: Ultra‐performance liquid chromatography–quadrupole time‐of‐flight tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC‐QTOF‐MS/MS) was applied to identify the chemical profiles and absorbed components of ZQD. Network pharmacology was used to identify targets and pathways related to MPS‐relieving efficacy. Results: The chemicals of ZQDs without/with EP process (referred to as ZQD‐W and ZQD‐W‐P, respectively) were qualitatively similar with 89 and 87 components identified, respectively, but their relative contents were different; 51 components were detectable in the serum of rats orally administered with ZQD‐W, whereas only 19 were detected in that administered with ZQD‐W‐P. Key targets, such as AKT1, and pathways, such as the PI3K‐Akt signalling pathway, affected by ZQD‐W and ZQD‐W‐P were similar, while the neuroactive ligand–receptor interaction pathway among others and the MAPK signalling pathway among others were specific pathways affected by ZQD‐W and ZQD‐W‐P, respectively. The specifically absorbed components of ZQD‐W could combine its specific key targets. Conclusion: The EP process quantitatively altered the chemical profiles of ZQD, subsequently affected the absorbed components of ZQD, and then affected the key targets and pathways of ZQD for relieving MPS. The EP process might result in variation of the MPS‐relieving efficacy of ZQD, which deserves further in vivo verification. The ethanol precipitation process quantitatively altered the chemical profiles of ZQD, subsequently affected the absorbed components of ZQD, and then affected the key targets and pathways of ZQD for relieving MPS. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have emerged as potential light‐emitting polymers for optoelectronic and optical devices, but their smart responsiveness to environmental stimuli has seldom been explored particularly for alkene‐linked conjugated COFs, which limits their application scope in “smart” systems. Herein, fluorine chemistry coupled with acrylonitrile linkage is introduced as a “one‐stone‐three‐bird” strategy to produce a smart COF with rapid pH‐responsive absorption and fluorescence, high fluorescence quantum yield (QY), and good crystallinity. In addition to increased crystallinity, the newly designed fluorinated acrylonitrile‐linked COF (TF‐COF) produces 20% enhancement in fluorescence QY and more rapid responsiveness of absorption and fluorescence under acid–base induction compared to the nonfluorinated counterpart. Impressively, the yielded QY reaches 33.6% in solid states and 41.0% in tetrahydrofuran dispersion, surpassing most existing COF materials. The synergy effect of fluorine chemistry induced charge redistribution and acrylonitrile linkage enabled reversible C═C bonds contributes to the rapid responsiveness, high fluorescence QY, and good crystallinity. The developed TF‐COF can be utilized as a responsive phosphor to endow image encryption with high coloration and good reversibility, and as an encryption data carrier via simple handwriting.

AIM: To investigate the association of axial length (AL), lens thickness (LT), and lens vault (LV) with postoperative anterior chamber angle metrics after laser peripheral iridotomy (LPI). METHODS: Prospective observational study of 69 patients (97 eyes) were diagnosed as primary angle-closure suspect (PACS), primary angle closure (PAC) or primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG). AL, LT, anterior central chamber depth (ACD), angle opening distance (AOD), trabecular iris angle (TIA), and angle recess area (ARA) were measured before and 1wk after LPI. Abstract Lag screw cut-out is the most common cause of fixation failure of trochanteric fractures. Intraoperative assessment of fracture reduction and fixation quality is vital to avoid fracture reduction and achieve good functional outcomes. In a recent study, Zhang et al. reported the occurrence of a reverse wedge effect after intraoperative nail insertion based on a new computed tomography(CT)-guided fracture classification system, which specifically happened to the basicervical facture type and resulted in valgus deformity with gapping at the medial inferior fracture line. Impingement between the reamer/nail and superolateral cortex of the femoral neck has been regarded as the main cause. Based on these findings, together with an extensive literature review, the practicality of the new fracture classification system, the definition of basicervical trochanteric fracture, and the mechanisms underlying the reverse wedge effect have been deeply discussed. More studies should be carried out in the future to analyse pre- and intraoperative related factors that could affect the intraoperative fragment migration effects and determine highly specific measures to address them.

Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is a biocompatible polymer used in biotherapeutics to increase bioavailability, reduce the frequency of administration, and optimize pharmacokinetics. Anti-PEG antibodies have been detected in healthy individuals and may decrease efficacy and alter the pharmacokinetics of PEGylated therapeutics; however, the prevalence of anti-PEG antibodies is unclear. In this study, a flow cytometry assay was optimized to detect anti-PEG IgG and IgM in human blood plasma. Three hundred (300) plasma samples from healthy blood donors were screened; anti-PEG IgG or IgM was detected in 65.3% of the total population, with 21.3% having anti-PEG IgG, 19.0% having anti-PEG IgM, and 25.0% having both anti-PEG IgG and IgM. The presence of anti-PEG IgG and IgM was confirmed using a 0.5% Tween-20 interference assay, a 20 kDa PEGylated polystyrene bead binding assay, and Western blotting of purified plasma from human IgG and IgM purification columns. The concentrations of anti-PEG IgG and IgM in positive samples ranged from 39 ng/mL to 18.7 μg/mL and 26 ng/mL to 11.6 μg/mL, respectively. The highest prevalence of both anti-IgG and anti-IgM was in individuals 18–24 years of age. The prevalence of anti-PEG IgG and IgM tended to be higher in women but did not differ among races. Age, sex, and race were not associated with the concentrations of anti-PEG IgG or IgM. No correlation was found between anti-PEG IgG and IgM concentrations. Our study indicates that flow cytometry can be used to detect anti-PEG IgG and IgM antibodies in human plasma.

The article discusses case studies which show bacteremia and/or fungemia after examining peripheral blood smears, especially in critically ill individuals with non-specific symptoms. The patients studied include a 31-year-old woman who was hospitalized for investigation of coma presented with vaginal bleeding, a 27-year-old man with poor limb movement and limb convulsions for two days, and a 53-year-old male patient with progressively reduced consciousness following head, neck and chest trauma.
