Ubiquitination was considered to be a crucial factor in intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA) development. Herein, we identified Ubiquitin-specific peptidase 8 (USP8) as a key regulator for promoting the tumorigenesis of iCCA cell via stabilizing OGT. USP8 was overexpressed in human tumor tissues and correlated with worse survival. Moreover, the mass spectrometry and co-immunoprecipitation analysis indicated that USP8 interacted with OGT. USP8 worked as a bona fide deubiquitylase of OGT. It stabilized OGT in a deubiquitylation activity-dependent manner. Meanwhile, DUB-IN3, the USP8 inhibitor, could also restrain the malignancy of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma. In addition, USP8 depletion promoted the response of iCCA to pemigatinib. In conclusion, our findings pointed to a previously undocumented catalytic role for USP8 as a deubiquitinating enzyme of OGT. The USP8-OGT axis could be a potential target for iCCA therapy. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common type of primary hepatic liver cancer. Dysregulated Wnt/β-catenin activation is closely related to the progression of cancer. Nevertheless, the mechanism that sustains the abnormal expression of β-catenin in HCC has yet to be identified. In this study, we find that UCHL3 is overexpressed in HCC tissues and correlated with β-catenin protein level. High expression of UCHL3 is associated with poor prognosis. UCHL3 knockdown markedly reduces the protein level of β-catenin in HCC cells. TOP-luciferase activity and β-catenin target genes expression are also decreased upon UCHL3 depletion. We find that the ARM domain of β-catenin is required for the interaction with UCHL3. UCHL3 increases β-catenin protein stability via removing K48-specific poly-ubiquitin chains from β-catenin protein. Furthermore, the depletion of UCHL3 induces ferroptosis and hinders the growth, invasion, and stem cell properties of HCC cells. These impacts could be restored by the overexpression of β-catenin. In addition, the UCHL3 inhibitor TCID inhibits the aggressive phenotype of HCC through the degradation of β-catenin. In general, our results indicates that UCHL3 increases the stability of β-catenin, which in turn facilitates tumorigenesis of HCC, suggesting that targeting UCHL3 may be a promising approach for the treatment of HCC. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a lethal and aggressive human malignancy. The present study examins the anti‐tumor effects of deubiquitylating enzymes (DUB) inhibitors in HCC. It is found that the inhibitor of ubiquitin specific peptidase 8 (USP8) and DUB‐IN‐3 shows the most effective anti‐cancer responses. Targeting USP8 inhibits the proliferation of HCC and induces cell ferroptosis. In vivo xenograft and metastasis experiments indicate that inhibition of USP8 suppresses tumor growth and lung metastasis. DUB‐IN‐3 treatment or USP8 depletion decrease intracellular cystine levels and glutathione biosynthesis while increasing the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Mechanistical studies reveal that USP8 stabilizes O‐GlcNAc transferase (OGT) via inhibiting K48‐specific poly‐ubiquitination process on OGT protein at K117 site, and STE20‐like kinase (SLK)‐mediated S716 phosphorylation of USP8 is required for the interaction with OGT. Most importantly, OGT O‐GlcNAcylates solute carrier family 7, member 11 (SLC7A11) at Ser26 in HCC cells, which is essential for SLC7A11 to import the cystine from the extracellular environment. Collectively, this study demonstrates that pharmacological inhibition or knockout of USP8 can inhibit the progression of HCC and induce ferroptosis via decreasing the stability of OGT, which imposes a great challenge that targeting of USP8 is a potential approach for HCC treatment. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most prevalent and lethal human malignancies, and with quite limited treatment alternatives. The proteasome is responsible for most of the protein degradation in eukaryotic cells and required for the maintenance of intracellular homeostasis. However, its potential role in HCC is largely unknown. In the current study, we identified eukaryotic translation initiation factor 3 subunit H (EIF3H), belonging to the JAB1/MPN/MOV34 (JAMM) superfamily, as a bona fide deubiquitylase of O-GlcNAc transferase (OGT) in HCC. We explored that EIF3H was positively associated with OGT in HCC and was related to the unfavorable prognosis. EIF3H could interact with, deubiquitylate, and stabilize OGT in a deubiquitylase-dependent manner. Specifically, EIF3H was associated with the GT domain of ERα via its JAB/MP domain, thus inhibiting the K48-linked ubiquitin chain on OGT. Besides, we demonstrated that the knockdown of EIF3H significantly reduced OGT protein expression, cell proliferation and invasion, and caused G1/S arrest of HCC. We also found that the deletion of EIF3H prompted ferroptosis in HCC cells. Finally, the effects of EIF3H depletion could be reversed by further OGT overexpression, implying that the OGT status is indispensable for EIF3H function in HCC carcinogenesis. BRCA1 interacting helicase 1 (BRIP1) alteration was crucial in tumors and it was a potential therapeutic target in ovarian serous cystadenocarcinoma (OV). Although a small number of studies had focused on BRIP1, an extensive study of BRIP1 genetic mutation and its clinical application in different cancer types had not been analyzed. In the current study, we analyzed BRIP1 abnormal expression, methylation, mutation, and their clinical application via several extensive datasets, which covered over 10,000 tumor samples across more than 30 cancer types. The total mutation rate of BRIP1 was rare in pan cancer. Its alteration frequency, oncogenic effects, mutation, and therapeutic implications were different in each cancer. 242 BRIP1 mutations were found across 32 cancer types. UCEC had the highest alteration (mutation and CNV) frequency. In addition, BRIP1 was a crucial oncogenic factor in OV and BRCA. BRIP1 mutation in PRAD was targetable, and FDA had approved a new drug. Moreover, Kaplan–Meier curve analysis showed that BRIP1 expression and genetic aberrations were closely related to patient survival in several cancers, indicating their potential for application as new tumor markers and therapeutic targets. Active noise control systems are generally application-specific, and an appropriate algorithm with an optimal configuration is desirable in the first stage of active noise control system design and deployment. This study presents a design of the subband active noise control system with optimal parameters for a practical broadband active noise control. Although the delayless subband active noise control has gained wide attention for broadband noise cancellation, an optimal design remains a challenge because of the complex interplay between multiple factors such as spectral leakage, delay and weight stacking distortion subject to a number of configurable parameters, and weight stacking method. The configurable parameters can hardly be optimized independently because the active noise control performance depends on the combined configuration. A simple near black box active noise control algorithm optimization model is thus established by incorporating the genetic algorithm optimization into the parametric design of the delayless subband algorithm. The automated process does not require an understanding of the performance characteristics for different parameters. The significance of applying the automated genetic algorithm optimization to the complex multiparameter nonlinear active noise control design is revealed by numerical simulations, particularly for the multichannel low-frequency broadband active noise control system configured with the delayless subband algorithms. Introduction: Infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria, in particular carbapenem-resistant organisms (CRO), pose a great threat to liver transplant (LT) recipients. Understanding the risk factors for Gram-negative and CRO infections and the drug resistance of corresponding bacteria will help guide the prevention and treatment of these infections. Methods: Data on the composition, distribution and drug resistance of Gram-negative bacteria and CRO among LT recipients were collected. The risk factors for Gram-negative and CRO infections were identified via univariate and multivariate analysis. Results: A total of 45 episodes of Gram-negative infection, including 20 episodes of CRO infection, occurred in 19.9% (27/136) of LT recipients. Klebsiella pneumoniae was the dominant pathogenic bacteria (14/45; 31.1%). The most common site of infection was the abdominal cavity/bile duct (11/27; 40.7%). Eleven (8.1%) patients died within 2 months after LT, and two deaths were related to Gram-negative infection. Gram-negative bacteria were relatively sensitive to tigecycline and polymyxin B, with resistance of 26.7 and 11.1%, respectively. CRO had lower resistance to ceftazidime/avibactam (45.5%) and polymyxin B (10%). A univariate analysis showed that male sex, infection within 2 months prior to LT, duration of surgery ≥ 400 min, reoperation, indwelling urethral catheter use ≥ 3 days and elevated alanine aminotransferase on day 1 post-LT were associated with Gram-negative infection. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that infection within 2 months prior to LT [odds ratio (OR) = 4.426, 95%CI: 1.634–11.99, P = 0.003], duration of surgery ≥ 400 min [OR = 3.047, 95%CI: 1.194–7.773, P = 0.02] and indwelling urethral catheter use ≥ 3 days [OR = 5.728, 95%CI: 1.226–26.763, P = 0.026] were independent risk factors for Gram-negative infection after LT, and that only carbapenem use ≥ 3 days within 15 days prior to infection [OR = 14, 95%CI: 1.862–105.268, P = 0.01] was related to the occurrence of CRO infections. Conclusion: The incidence of Gram-negative and CRO infections was high in the early post-LT period. The most common infection site was the abdominal cavity/bile duct, and the dominant pathogen was K. pneumoniae. Patients with infections within 2 months prior to LT, prolonged surgery time or delayed urethral catheter removal were prone to Gram-negative infection. Background: Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is characterized by refractory hypoxemia caused by accumulation of pulmonary fluid, which is related to inflammatory cell infiltration, impaired tight junction of pulmonary epithelium and impaired Na, K-ATPase function, especially Na, K-ATPase α1 subunit. Up until now, the pathogenic mechanism at the level of protein during lipopolysaccharide- (LPS-) induced ARDS remains unclear. Methods: Using an unbiased, discovery and quantitative proteomic approach, we discovered the differentially expressed proteins binding to Na, K-ATPase α1 between LPS-A549 cells and Control-A549 cells. These Na, K-ATPase α1 interacting proteins were screened by co-immunoprecipitation (Co-IP) technology. Among them, some of the differentially expressed proteins with significant performance were identified and quantified by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS). Data are available via ProteomeXchange with identifier PXD032209. The protein interaction network was constructed by the related Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis. Several differentially expressed proteins were validated by Western blot. Results: Of identified 1598 proteins, 89 were differentially expressed proteins between LPS-A549 cells and Control-A549 cells. Intriguingly, protein–protein interaction network showed that there were 244 significantly enriched co-expression among 60 proteins in the group control-A549. while the group LPS-A549 showed 43 significant enriched interactions among 29 proteins. The related GO and KEGG analysis found evident phenomena of ubiquitination and deubiquitination, as well as the pathways related to autophagy. Among proteins with rich abundance, there were several intriguing ones, including the deubiquitinase (OTUB1), the tight junction protein zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1), the scaffold protein in CUL4B-RING ubiquitin ligase (CRL4B) complexes (CUL4B) and the autophagy-related protein sequestosome-1 (SQSTM1). Conclusions: In conclusion, our proteomic approach revealed targets related to the occurrence and development of ARDS, being the first study to investigate significant differences in Na, K-ATPase α1 interacting proteins between LPS-induced ARDS cell model and control-A549 cell. Tumor biomarkers are eagerly needed in monitoring the recurrence of operable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Circulating cell-free DNA (cfDNA) is a promising noninvasive molecular biomarker for HCC. The current study aimed to evaluate the clinical significance of the postoperative cfDNA in operable HCC. This study enrolled 82 HCC patients from January 2018 to June 2019. All patients underwent liver surgery and were pathologically diagnosed with HCC. Postoperative blood samples were collected from each patient. A fluorometric dsDNA assay was used to measure the concentration of cfDNA. We explore the correlation between cfDNA and recurrence. Kaplan–Meier's curves were used to evaluate the recurrence-free survival (RFS). Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses were used for assessing the relative clinical variables in predicting recurrence. Of the 82 HCC patients, 72 (87%) patients are male and the average age was 52.7 ± 12.8 years. The cfDNA-low and cfDNA-high groups had median recurrence times of 19.5 months and 14.0 months, respectively (p =.023). Multivariate analysis showed that postoperative cfDNA, tumour number and microvascular invasion (p <.050) were independent risk factors for recurrence in operable HCC. Postoperative cfDNA is still a promising marker to predict prognosis in postoperative HCC patients although prospective and large multicenter clinical study is needed to further validate the relationship between cfDNA and HCC recurrence. The present study aimed to elucidate the mechanisms by which leucine impacts the secretion of pancreatic enzymes, especially amylase, by studying the proteomics profiles of pancreatic acinar (PA) cells from dairy cows. PA cells, the experimental model, were treated with four concentrations of leucine (0, 0.23, 0.45, and 0.90 mM). The abundance of different proteins in the four leucine treatment groups was detected. Label-free proteomic analysis enabled the identification of 1,906 proteins in all four treatment groups, and 1,350 of these proteins showed common expression across the groups. The primary effects of leucine supplementation were increased (P < 0.05) citrate synthase and ATPase activity, which enlarged the cytosolic ATP pool, and the upregulation of secretory protein 61 (Sec61) expression, which promoted protein secretion. In summary, these results suggest that leucine increases citrate synthase in the TCA cycle and ATPase activity and promotes the Sec signaling pathway to increase the exocrine function of PA cells. Objective: To discuss the function of mixed reality (MR) technology in guiding location of intervertebral foramen microscopic puncture and analyze its feasibility and clinical application value. Methods: Sixty patients with lumbar intervertebral disc who were treated between January 2017 to October 2017 were chosen, and classified into navigation group (30 cases) and traditional control (30 cases) according to random number table. Intervertebral foramen microscopic operation was conducted for both groups. MR technology was applied for the navigation group to guide puncture and establish intervertebral foramen microscopic cannula. Traditional C-arm X-ray apparatus was used for traditional group to establish intervertebral foramen microscopic cannula. Intra-operative puncture times, fluoroscopy times, puncture time and VAS score 1d, 3m and 6m after the operation were recorded and compared. Results: Postoperative waist and leg pain symptoms of both groups were relieved obviously, and straight leg raising test for the diseased limb turned to be negative. Intra-operative puncture times, fluoroscopy times, puncture time and operation time had statistical significance decrease. Conclusion: Mixed reality (MR) can accurately guide the establishment of intervertebral foramen microscopic cannula, solve the bottleneck problem of intervertebral foramen microscopic technology, promote puncture success rate, reduce repeated puncture times, avoid by-injury, shorten puncture time and reduce X-ray radiation quantity of operators and patients, so it deserves to be promoted and applied. Background: Artemisia argyi and A. lavandulifolia are two morphologically similar herbal medicines derived from the Artemisia genus. Although the two Artemisia herbs have been used as herbal medicines for a long time, studies on their phytochemicals and bioactive compositions are still limited, and no research has been devoted to compare the volatile compounds in A. argyi and A. lavandulifolia. Objective: To compare the volatile constituents in A. argyi and A. lavandulifolia and to explore chemical markers for discrimination and quality evaluation of the two Artemisia herbal medicines. Methods: A GC-MS-based metabolomic approach was employed to compare and discriminate A. argyi and A. lavandulifolia from the aspect of volatile compounds. Multivariate statistical methods, including principal component analysis and orthogonal partial least-squares discriminate analysis, were applied to explore chemical markers for discrimination of the two Artemisia herbal medicines. Results: Thirty volatile compounds were identified, and the chemical profiles of volatile compounds in A. argyi and A. lavandulifolia were quite similar. Principal component analysis and orthogonal partial least-squares discrimination analysis results indicated that the two Artemisia herbal medicines could be distinguished effectively from each other. Ten volatile compounds were selected as potential chemical markers for discrimination of the two Artemisia herbal medicines. Conclusions: The GC-MS-based metabolomics could be an acceptable strategy for comparison and discrimination of A. argyi and A. lavandulifolia as well as authentication of herbal medicines derived from other closely related species. The C–H activation on metal oxides is a fundamental process in chemistry. In this paper, we report a density functional theory study on the process of the C–H activation of CH4 on Pd(111), Pt(111), Ru(0001), Tc(0001), Cu(111), PdO(001), PdO(110), and PdO(100). A linear relationship between the C–H activation barrier and the chemisorption in the dissociation final state on the metal surfaces is obtained, which is consistent with the work in the literature. However, the relationship is poor on the metal oxide surfaces. Instead, a strong linear correlation between the barrier and the lattice O–H bond strength is found on the oxides. The present study aimed to investigate whether leucine affects the pancreatic exocrine by controlling the antisecretory factor (AF) and cholecystokinin receptor (CCKR) expression as well as the proteasome activity in pancreatic acinar cells of dairy calves. The pancreatic acinar cells were isolated from newborn Holstein bull calves and cultured using the Dulbecco’s modified Eagle’s medium/nutrient mixture F12 Ham’s liquid (DMEM/F12). There were six treatments of leucine dosage including 0 (control), 0.23, 0.45, 1.35, 4.05, and 12.15 mM, respectively. After culture for 3 h, the samples were collected for subsequent analysis. As the leucine concentration increased from 0 to 1.35 mM, the α-amylase activity in media decreased significantly (P<0.05), while further increase in leucine concentration did not show any decrease in α-amylase activity. Addition of leucine inhibited (P<0.05) the expression of AF and CCKR, and decreased the activity of proteasome (P<0.05) by 76%, 63%, 24%, 7%, and 9%, respectively. Correlation analysis results showed α-amylase secretion was negatively correlated with leucine concentration (P<0.01), and positively correlated with proteasome activity (P<0.01) and the expression of CCK1R (P<0.01) and AF (P<0.05). The biggest regression coefficient was showed between α-amylase activity and proteasome (0.7699, P<0.001). After inhibition of proteasome byMG-132, low dosage leucine decreased (P<0.05) the activity of proteasome and α-amylase, as well as the expression of CCK1R. As new nutritional strategies for ruminant are designed to change production efficiency by improving the supply of rumen protect protein, lipid, and even starch, the digestive system must fit to utilize these increased nutrient supplies, especially the pancreas. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of phenylalanine (Phe) on digestive enzymes synthesis or secretion and cellular signaling in pancreatic acinar (PA) cells of dairy calves. The PA cells isolated from fresh pancreas of dairy calves, and cultured in completed RIPA 1640 medium with no fetal serum but 0, 0.15 and 0.45 mM Phe at 37◦C in CO2 incubator for 120 min. The pancreatic tissue segments (PTS) was cut approximately 2 × 2 mm from the fresh pancreas, and incubated in oxygenated Krebs-Ringer bicarbonate (KRB) buffer containing 0 or 0.35 mM Phe at 39◦C for 180 min, and the samples were collected every 60 min after incubation. In PA cells, Phe increased (P < 0.05) the α-amylase secretion and mRNA expression, the phosphorylation of ribosomal protein S6 kinase 1 (S6K1) and eukaryotic initiation factor 4E binding protein 1 (4EBP1). In PTS, the Phe increased (P < 0.05) α-amylase and trypsin synthesis, secretion and mRNA expression, as well as the phosphorylation of S6K1 and 4EBP1. Conclusively, these results suggested that Phe regulates the synthesis or secretion of α-amylase, trypsin and lipase through mRNA translation initiation factors - S6K1 and 4EBP1. Soil organic carbon stock plays a key role in the global carbon cycle and the precision agriculture. Visible and near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (VNIRS) can directly reflect the internal physical construction and chemical substances of soil. The partial least squares regression (PLSR) is a classical and highly commonly used model in constructing soil spectral models and predicting soil properties. Nevertheless, using PLSR alone may not consider soil as characterized by strong spatial heterogeneity and dependence. However, considering the spatial characteristics of soil can offer valuable spatial information to guarantee the prediction accuracy of soil spectral models. Thus, this study aims to construct a rapid and accurate soil spectral model in predicting soil organic carbon density (SOCD) with the aid of the spatial autocorrelation of soil spectral reflectance. A total of 231 topsoil samples (0-30 cm) were collected from the Jianghan Plain, Wuhan, China. The spectral reflectance (350-2500 nm) was used as auxiliary variable. A geographically-weighted regression (GWR) model was used to evaluate the potential improvement of SOCD prediction when the spatial information of the spectral features was considered. Results showed that: (1) The principal components extracted from PLSR have a strong relationship with the regression coefficients at the average sampling distance (300 m) based on the Moran's I values. (2) The eigenvectors of the principal components exhibited strong relationships with the absorption spectral features, and the regression coefficients of GWR varied with the geographical locations. (3) GWR displayed a higher accuracy than that of PLSR in predicting the SOCD by VNIRS. This study aimed to help people realize the importance of the spatial characteristics of soil properties and their spectra. Background: Early ripening is an important desirable attribute for fruit crops. 'Kyoho' is a popular table grape cultivar in many Asian countries. 'Fengzao' is a bud mutant of 'Kyoho' and ripens nearly 30 days earlier than 'Kyoho'. To identify genes controlling early fruit development and ripening in 'Fengzao', RNA-Seq profiles of the two cultivars were compared at 8 different berry developmental stages in both berry peel and flesh tissues. Methods: RNA-Seq profiling of berry development between 'Kyoho' and 'Fenzhao' were obtained using the Illumina HiSeq system and analyzed using various statistical methods. Expression patterns of several selected genes were validated using qRT-PCR. Results: About 447 millions of RNA-Seq sequences were generated from 40 RNA libraries covering various different berry developmental stages of 'Fengzao' and 'Kyoho'. These sequences were mapped to 23,178 and 22,982 genes in the flesh and peel tissues, respectively. While most genes in 'Fengzao' and 'Kyoho' shared similar expression patterns over different berry developmental stages, there were many genes whose expression were detected only in 'Fengzao' or 'Kyoho'. We observed 10 genes in flesh tissue and 22 genes in peel tissue were differentially expressed at FDR ⩽ 0.05 when the mean expression of 'Fengzao' and 'Kyoho' were compared. The most noticeable one was _214s0030g00950 (a superoxide dismutase gene). This ROS related gene showed lower expression levels in 'Fengzao' than 'Kyoho' in both peel and flesh tissues across various berry developmental stages with the only exception at véraison. VIT_200s0238g00060 (TMV resistance protein n-like) and VIT_213s0067g01100 (disease resistance protein at3g14460-like) were the two other noticeable genes which were found differentially expressed between the two cultivars in both peel and flesh tissues. GO functional category and KEGG enrichment analysis of DEGs indicated that gene activities related to stress and ROS were altered between the two cultivars in both flesh and peel tissues. Several differentially expressed genes of interest were successfully validated using qRT-PCR. Sophora flavescens Alt. is widely used in traditional medicine as a functional food ingredient for the treatment of diseases, used as antipyretics, pesticide, and antibacterial agents to treat pruritus and other skin infections. In this study, ten new prenylated flavonoids and analogs (1 – 10) including nine flavanones (1 – 6 and 8 – 9), one flavanol (7), and one chromone (10), along with thirteen known flavonoids (11 – 23), have been obtained from the root barks of Sophora flavescens. Their structures were elucidated through comprehensive spectroscopic analysis. Bioactive assay discovered that 2 R -sophoflavonoid A (2) possessed an excellent ability to suppress the growth of Staphylococcus aureus (MIC = 2 µg/mL) and low cytotoxicity toward the LO2 cells. Furthermore, the time-kill curves showed compound 2 had the ability to kill S. aureus rapidly. The bactericidal rate of compound 2 was faster than that of ampicillin at the concentration of 10 times MIC, and the bactericidal time of compound 2 was 3 min while ampicillin for 90. Crystal violet assay showed that compound 2 not only inhibited the formation of biofilms but also eradicated mature biofilms in a concentration-dependent mode. Preliminary mechanistic studies revealed that 2 possessed grateful antibacterial effects through damaging the membrane integrity, stimulating ROS generation, and reducing bacterial metabolism. A rapid and simple ultra-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (UPLC-ESI-MS) method for the determination of astragaloside III was developed and used in a pharmacokinetic and tissue distribution study in rats following the oral administration 95% ethanol extraction of Zhenqi Fuzheng capsules. Although astragaloside III and astragaloside IV have the same molecular weight and very similar structures, they were successfully separated using this method. Quantification was performed using low-energy collision tandem mass spectrometry (CID-MS-MS) with the multiple reaction monitoring scan mode of the following precursor ion→product ion at m/z 807.61→335.22 for astragaloside III and at m/z 633.18→331.18 for the internal standard (hesperidin). Both astragaloside III and astragaloside IV in rat plasma were best fit to a twocompartment model. The tissue distribution study showed the overall trend of disposition of astragaloside III were Cthymus>Cspleen >Cstomach >Cliver>Cheart>Ckidney>Clung>Ctesticle. The high levels of astragaloside III in thymus and spleen indicated an accumulation in organs involved in immune responses and showed that these organs are major target sites in vivo. We construct hierarchical MnO 2 nanosheets @ fiberglass nanostructures via one-pot hydrothermal method without any surfactants. The morphology and structure of MnO 2 -modified fiberglass composites are examined by focus ion beam scanning electron microscopy (FIB/SEM), X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The birnessite-type MnO 2 nanosheets are observed to grow vertically on the surface of fiberglass. Furthermore, the birnessite-type MnO 2 -fiberglass composites exhibit good ability for degradation of methylene blue (MB) in different pH levels. In neutral solution (pH 6.5–7.0), it achieves a high removal rate of 96.1% (2 h, at 60 °C) in the presence of H 2 O 2 ; and in acidic environment (pH 1.5), 96.8% of MB solution (20 mg/L, 100 mL) is decomposed by oxidation within only 5 min. In principles, the rational design of MnO 2 nanosheets-decorated fiberglass architectures demonstrated the suitability of the low-cost MnO 2 -modified fiberglass nanostructure for water treatment. This study was conducted to determine the prognostic value of serum α-fetoprotein (AFP) levels in patients with ovarian yolk sac tumor (OYST). We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the associations between serum AFP level and prognosis in OYST. A total of 12 quantitative studies met the inclusion criteria. Preoperative AFP was not found to be associated with overall survival (OS) [odds ratio (OR)=0.84, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.43-1.62] in OYST. However, a high postoperative AFP level was associated with worse OS (OR=0.16, 95% CI: 0.05-0.48) and relapse-free survival (RFS) (OR=0.18, 95% CI: 0.08-0.43) compared to a low postoperative AFP level in patients with OYST. In addition, a postoperative AFP level of >1,000 ng/ml was associated with a decrease in OS (OR=0.16, 95% CI: 0.05-0.50) and RFS (OR=0.21, 95% CI: 0.08-0.57). In conclusion, the postoperative, but not the preoperative, AFP level was found to be a prognostic factor in patients with OYST. Yolk sac tumor (YST), also known as an endodermal sinus tumor, is a rare malignant germ cell tumor. Primary retroperitoneal YST (PRYST) is extremely rare and, to the best of our knowledge, has only been described in case reports. The histogenesis of PRYST and the appropriate treatment strategy remain unclear due to the rarity of this type of tumor. The present study reports a case of YST in the retroperitoneum. A 19-year-old female presented with abdominal distension and edema of the lower limbs. A computed tomography scan revealed a large, solid mass located in the retroperitoneum. The tumor size was 20x25x30 cm and widespread metastasis was identified during the exploratory laparotomy. The postoperative histopathology report showed a malignant retroperitoneal tumor (although a YST was initially considered). The patient underwent three surgical procedures and 17 cycles of five different chemotherapy regimens. The patient succumbed to cachexia, which was due to tumor recurrence, and liver and spleen metastases 21 months after diagnosis. PRYST may relapse following surgical treatment; however, surgical resection is currently the optimal treatment method. In this case, bleomycin, etoposide and cisplatin; bleomycin, vincristine and cisplatin; and vincristine and cisplatin chemotherapy regimens were effective for the patient with PRYST, although the tumor was not completely resected. a-fetoprotein (AFP) is an important tumor marker for monitoring PRYST recurrence and observation of elevated serum AFP levels during chemotherapy indicates a poor prognosis. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are more than 200 bp in length and do not translate into functional proteins. They are involved in inhibiting cell growth, migration, and invasion, and in promoting apoptosis. It was found that cancer-related LINC00961 is downregulated in a variety of malignant tumors, including lung cancer, renal cell carcinoma, and hepatocellular carcinoma. LINC00961 either inhibits or promotes the expression of many genes to affect cancer progression via microRNAs such as miR-5581-3p, miR-367, miR-223-3p, miR-19-3p, and miR-125b-5p, epithelial--mesenchymal transition, and Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway. Thus, LINC00961 may be a viable biomarker or therapeutic target for human cancers. The correctness of the numerical finite element method to calculate transmission loss (TL) of the micro-perforated tube muffler is validated through the measurement of the transmission loss of a micro-perforated tube muffler sample. The transmission loss is measured by a two-load technique that is usually applied to measure the acoustic impedance of micro-perforated panel (MPP) and the transmission loss of various mufflers. A theoretical calculation model of the transmission loss of the micro-perforated tube muffler with a baffle is then established and afterwards verified by the finite element method that has been previously validated. The theoretical model is based on the analysis of a simple pass-through micro-perforated muffler and the plane wave theory. The transfer matrix method is applied to connect the sound pressure and particle velocity of the inlet and the outlet of the muffler. Additionally, boundary conditions and continuity requirements are considered in the theoretical modeling process. Finally, several analyses of the effect of the baffle on the transmission loss of the micro-perforated tube muffler are conducted respectively, which are based on the theoretical model mentioned above. Specifically, two key factors: the axial position of a baffle and the number of the baffles arranged uniformly in the axial direction of the muffler, are under consideration. Five different positions of the baffle lead to different transmission loss curves. In addition, a detailed analysis is given concerned with the baffles number that increases from 0 to 7. Besides, a comparison among three different micro-perforated tube mufflers is given to illustrate the relationship between the baffle and the air cavity length from the aspect of the transmission loss. Consequently, the results of all analyses reveal that, on one hand, the position of the baffle located in the air cavity of the micro-perforated tube muffler alters the main sound attenuation frequency band and the corresponding transmission losses. Furthermore, when the baffle is installed closer to the central cross-section of the air cavity, the first sound attenuation frequency domain arch extends towards the higher frequencies and also the corresponding transmission losses become greater than before. On the other hand, the transmission losses of the micro-perforated muffler with baffles arranged uniformly in the axial direction of the muffler improve with the increasing number of baffles. However, they will not significantly improve once the number of baffles reaches a certain value. Ultimately, we concluded that baffles installed in the air cavity of the micro-perforated tube muffler are beneficial for muffler design to shorten the axial length of the air cavity, thereby shortening the axial length of the entire muffler, without the degradation of sound attenuation performance of the muffler, which is very favorable to reduce the axial dimension of the micro-perforated muffler and thus instructs its optimization and design. Retrotransposons (RTNs) have important roles in the formation of plant genome size, structure, and evolution. Ubiquitous distributions, abundant copy numbers, high heterogeneities, and insertional polymorphisms of RTNs have made them as excellent sources for molecular markers development. However, the wide application of RTNs-based molecular markers is restricted by the scarcity of the LTR (long terminal repeat) sequences information. A new, simple, and efficient method to isolate LTR sequences of RTNs was presented based on the degenerate RNase H nested primers and PPT (polypurine tract) primer of RTNs in tree peony. This method combined the characteristics and advantages of high-efficiency thermal asymmetric interlaced PCR (hiTAIL-PCR), annealing control primer (ACP) system, and suppression PCR method. Nineteen LTR sequences were isolated using this new method in tree peony and the applicability of the LTR sequences based markers was validated by further SSAP analysis. The results showed that the new method is simple, of low-cost, and highly efficient, which is just conducted by three rounds of PCR and does not need any restriction enzymes and adapters, much less the hybridizations. Objective: This exploratory meta-analysis aimed to examine and compare the effective interventions to prevent falls among institutionalized/non-institutionalized older adults without cognitive impairment with interventions to prevent falls for older adults with cognitive impairment. Design: A database search identified 111 trials published between January 1992 and August 2012 that evaluated fall-prevention interventions among institutionalized/non-institutionalized older adults with and without cognitive impairment as measured by valid cognition scales. Results: Exercise alone intervention was similar effective on reducing the numbers of falls among older adults without cognitive impairment regardless of setting (non-institutionalized: OR = 0.783, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.656-0.936; p = 0.007 institutionalized: OR = 0.799, 95% CI = 0.646-0.988, p = 0.038). Vitamin D/calcium supplementation had a positive effect on the reduction of numbers of falls among non-institutionalized older adults without cognitive impairment (OR = 0.789, 95% CI = 0.631-0.985, p = 0.036), as did home visits and environment modification (OR = 0.751, 95% CI = 0.565-0.998, p = 0.048). Exercise alone, exercise-related multiple interventions, and multifactorial interventions were associated with positive outcomes among both institutionalized and non-institutionalized older adults with cognitive impairment, but studies are limited. Conclusions: Single exercise interventions can significantly reduce numbers of falls among older adults with and without cognitive impairment in institutional or non-institutional settings. Vitamin D and calcium supplementation, home visits, and environment modification can reduce the risk of falls among older adults in non-institutional settings. A total of 32 different grape cultivars including representatives of local Chinese cultivars, some important and widely grown Chinese cultivars and international reference cultivars were genotyped at nine microsatellite loci in order to characterize their genetic diversities. he numbers of alleles detected per locus ranged from 9 to 18 with a total of 105 alleles and an average of 11.7 alleles per locus, while the number of microsatellite genotypes varied between 10 and 23, indicating that there are abundant allele diversities in Chinese grape cultivars. he expected heterozygosity varied between 0.740 and 0.915 and the polymorphism information content ranged from 0.716 to 0.908. Objectives: Oral mucosal examination (OME) is an effective measure for detecting oral cancer, which is the fourth leading cause of cancer deaths among males in Taiwan. Despite this fact, there is a lack of literature concerning the likelihood of undergoing an OME among different health risk groups based on individuals' habits of drinking alcohol, chewing betel quid, and smoking cigarettes. Methods: We applied a modified form of the Health Belief Model (HBM) to explore the likelihood that a sample of individuals participating in a "Community Free from Betel Quid Chewing" campaign would undergo an OME. Eight-hundred and sixty-six participants completed questionnaires measuring demographic characteristics, alcohol drinking, betel quid chewing, cigarette smoking, health beliefs, cues to action, self-efficacy, and likelihood of undergoing an OME. We used structural equation modeling (SEM) to investigate the direct and indirect paths, to predict the likelihood of undergoing an OME, in three different health risk groups. Classification of participants into groups of high, moderate, and low risk of developing oral cancer was based on the whether or not the participants drank alcohol, chewed betel quid, or smoked cigarettes. Results: The modified HBM demonstrated a good fit among the high, moderate, and low-risk groups, and explained 50%, 37%, and 30% of the variance of undergoing an OME, respectively. The direct and indirect paths influencing the likelihood of undergoing an OME varied significantly among the three groups. Conclusions: Based on the findings, care must be taken when selecting responsive health education for provision to participants with different health beliefs and levels of risks. Dirigent and dirigent-like family proteins contain a number of proteins involved in lignification or in the response to pathogen infection and abiotic stress in plants. In the present study, a full-length cDNA sequence of a dirigent-like gene designated ScDir (GenBank Accession Number JQ622282) was obtained from sugarcane based on the stem full-length cDNA library. The ScDir gene was 819-bp long, including a 564-bp ORF encoding 187 amino acid residues. The protein N-terminus contained signal peptides at amino acid residues of 1-25 and transmembrane regions at 7-26 aa. A his-tagged ScDir protein with an estimated molecular mass of 27.4 kDa was expressed in Escherichia coli system. The expressed ScDir protein had increased the host cell's tolerance to PEG and NaCl. When an endogenous GAPDH gene was used as internal control, results from real-time qPCR demonstrated that the ScDir mRNA amount in sugarcane stems was significantly higher than that in the roots, leaves and buds by 18.64 ± 0.48, 25,635.16 ± 2,966.03 and 721.50 ± 8.17-fold, respectively. The ScDir transcript levels in sugarcane seedling increased under HO, PEG or NaCl stress. The expression level of ScDir was significantly upregulated under PEG stress, and the highest level was observed at 12 h after stress. Thus, both the ScDir-hosted cell performance and the enhanced expressions in sugarcane imply that the ScDir gene is involved in the response to abiotic stresses of drought, salts and oxidation. The transcription of the ScDir gene is highly stem-specific, as revealed by real-time qPCR. Capsella rubella is an inbreeding annual forb closely related to Arabidopsis thaliana, a model species widely used for studying natural variation in adaptive traits such as flowering time. Although mutations in dozens of genes can affect flowering of A. thaliana in the laboratory, only a handful of such genes vary in natural populations. Chief among these are FRIGIDA (FRI) and FLOWERING LOCUS C (FLC). Common and rare FRI mutations along with rare FLC mutations explain a large fraction of flowering-time variation in A. thaliana. Here we document flowering time under different conditions in 20 C. rubella accessions from across the species' range. Similar to A. thaliana, vernalization, long photoperiods and elevated ambient temperature generally promote flowering. In this collection of C. rubella accessions, we did not find any obvious loss-of-function FRI alleles. Using mapping-by-sequencing with two strains that have contrasting flowering behaviors, we identified a splice-site mutation in FLC as the likely cause of early flowering in accession 1408. However, other similarly early C. rubella accessions did not share this mutation. We conclude that the genetic basis of flowering-time variation in C. rubella is complex, despite this very young species having undergone an extreme genetic bottleneck when it split from C. grandiflora a few tens of thousands of years ago. The S locus, a single polymorphic locus, is responsible for self-incompatibility (SI) in the Brassicaceae family and many related plant families. Despite its importance, our knowledge of S-locus evolution is largely restricted to the causal genes encoding the S-locus receptor kinase (SRK) receptor and S-locus cysteine-rich protein (SCR) ligand of the SI system. Here, we present high- quality sequences of the genomic region of six S-locus haplotypes: Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana; one haplotype), Arabidopsis lyrata (four haptotypes), and Capsella rubella (one haplotype). We compared these with reference S-locus haplotypes of the self- compatible Arabidopsis and its SI congener A. lyrata. We subsequently reconstructed the likely genomic organization of the S locus in the most recent common ancestor of Arabidopsis and Capsella. As previously reported, the two SI-determining genes, SCR and SRK, showed a pattern of coevolution. In addition, consistent with previous studies, we found that duplication, gene conversion, and positive selection have been important factors in the evolution of these two genes and appear to contribute to the generation of new recognition specificities. Intriguingly, the inactive pseudo-S-locus haplotype in the self-compatible species C. rubella is likely to be an old S-locus haplotype that only very recently became fixed when C. rubella split off from its SI ancestor, Capsella grandiflora. Plants, like animals, use several lines of defense against pathogen attack. Prominent among genes that confer disease resistance are those encoding nucleotide-binding site-leucine-rich repeat (NB-LRR) proteins. Likely due to selection pressures caused by pathogens, NB-LRR genes are the most variable gene family in plants, but there appear to be species-specific limits to the number of NB-LRR genes in a genome. Allelic diversity within an individual is also increased by obligatory outcrossing, which leads to genome-wide heterozygosity. In this study, we compared the NB-LRR gene complement of the selfer Arabidopsis thaliana and its outcrossing close relative Arabidopsis lyrata. We then complemented and contrasted the interspecific patterns with studies of NB-LRR diversity within A. thaliana. Three important insights are as follows: (1) that both species have similar numbers of NB-LRR genes; (2) that loci with single NB-LRR genes are less variable than tandem arrays; and (3) that presence- absence polymorphisms within A. thaliana are not strongly correlated with the presence or absence of orthologs in A. lyrata. Although A. thaliana individuals are mostly homozygous and thus potentially less likely to suffer from aberrant interaction of NB-LRR proteins with newly introduced alleles, the number of NB-LRR genes is similar to that in A. lyrata. In intraspecific and interspecific comparisons, NB-LRR genes are also more variable than receptor-like protein genes. Ethylene-responsive factors (ERFs) are important regulators of plant gene expression. In this study, three novel ERF genes, GhERF2, GhERF3 and GhERF6, were isolated from cotton ( Gossypium hirstum) using rapid amplification of cDNA ends-polymerase chain reaction. Transient expression analysis using GhERF-green fluorescent protein fusions showed that these three proteins were targeted to the nucleus. Fusion proteins consisting of GhERF2, GhERF3 or GhERF6 coupled to the GAL4 DNA binding domain strongly activated transcription in yeast. Furthermore, GhERF6 was shown to be able to bind specifically to GCC boxes using a particle bombardment assay in tobacco cells. Semi-quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction revealed that GhERF2 and GhERF3 are constitutively expressed in all organs, while GhERF6 is only constitutively expressed in vegetative organs. When plants were treated with ethylene, abscisic acid, salt, cold and drought, the transcripts of GhERF2, GhERF3 and GhERF6 were rapidly induced to high levels. Promoter analysis also indicated that the 5′ upstream regions of the three genes possess elements induced by these physiological and environmental factors. Collectively, our data suggest that GhERF2, GhERF3 and GhERF6 might function as positive trans-acting factors in the plant responses to ethylene, abscisic acid and other stresses and provide useful clues for further research into the mechanism of them in regulating cotton multiple stress responses. A method for continuous determination of the light rare earth elements (LREEs) and thorium in Baotou Iron Ore was established. The light rare earths and thorium were adsorbed on a micro-column packed with HD-8 cation exchange resins. The light rare earth elements were eluted with 4 mol L−1 HCl–2 mol L−1 NH4Cl solution and determined with tribromo-arsenzao by a 721-E spectrophotometry at 630 nm; thorium was eluted with 5% potassium oxalate solution and determined with Arsenazo III by a 721-E spectrophotometry at 660 nm. The measured values by the proposed method were in close agreement with the certified values (Baotou main ore standard sample, Baotou ore R-715 standard sample and GSD-2 standard sample). Flowering plants often prevent selfing through mechanisms of self-incompatibility (S.l.). The loss of S.l. has occurred many times independently, because it provides short-term advantages in situations where pollinators or mates are rare. The genus Capsella, which is closely related to Arabidopsis, contains a pair of closely related diploid species, the self-incompatible Capsella grandiflora and the self-compatible Capsella rubella. To elucidate the transition to selfing and its relationship to speciation of C. rubella, we have made use of comparative sequence information. Our analyses indicate that C. rubella separated from C. grandiflora recently (≈30,000-50,000 years ago) and that breakdown of 5.1. occurred at approximately the same time. Contrasting the nucleotide diversity patterns of the 2 species, we found that C. rubella has only 1 or 2 alleles at most loci, suggesting that it originated through an extreme population bottleneck. Our data are consistent with diploid speciation by a single, selfing individual, most likely living in Greece. The new species subsequently colonized the Mediterranean by Northern and Southern routes, at a time that also saw the spread of agriculture. As well known, many real complex systems are directed and weighted ones. For understanding the topology structure of the directed China Railway Network (CRN) further, we analyze the degree properties of the directed CRN and propose a new method to measure the weight of station (i.e., the utilized efficiency of station) in CRN according to how CRN works really. Rigorous analysis of the existing CRN data shows that the CRN is an assortative network with scale-free degree distribution in space L. On the other hand, the cumulative distribution of station's relative weight, the cumulative distribution of the shortest path length between stations, and the relationship between relative weight and in-(out-)degree have been studied. Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a critical disease with a high mortality rate, characterized by obstinate hypoxemia caused by accumulation of alveolar fluid and excessive uncontrolled inflammation. Na,K-ATPase α1 (ATP1A1) subunit is an important component of Na,K-ATPase that transports Na+ and K+ and scavenges alveolar fluid. The function of Na,K-ATPase is always impaired during ARDS and results in more severe symptoms of ARDS. However, the regulatory mechanism of Na,K-ATPase after ARDS remains unclear. Here, we revealed ATP1A1 was downregulated post-transcriptionally by an E3 ligase component CUL4B mediated proteasomal degradation. Moreover, we found insulin could inhibit the upregulation of CUL4B in an insulin receptor cofactor HCF-1-dependent manner. Our study resolved the molecular mechanism underlying the clearance impairment of alveolar fluid and provided a clue for the usage of insulin as a potential therapeutic medicine for ARDS. Abstract: Ethylene-responsive element binding factors (ERFs) are plant-specific transcription factors, many of which have been linked to stress responses. A novel ERF gene, designated GhERF4, was isolated by RACE-PCR from Gossypium hirstum. The GhERF4 cDNA has a total length of 1061bp with an open reading frame of 669bp, encoding a protein of 222 amino acids with a molecular weight of 23.5kDa and a calculated pI of 9.03. Sequence alignment shows that GhERF4 contains a 58 amino acid long AP2/ERF domain and a RKRP nuclear localization signal, and belongs to a group II protein in the ERF subfamily as typified by the C-terminal ERF-associated Amphiphilic Repression (EAR) motif. Southern blot analysis indicates that GhERF4 is a single copy gene in cotton genome. Using green fluorescent protein fusion, we demonstrate that GhERF4 accumulates specifically in the nucleus of onion epidermis cells. Semi-quantitative RT-PCR reveals that GhERF4 is constitutively expressed in true leaves, roots, seeds and stems. The transcripts of GhERF4 accumulate highly and rapidly when plants are treated with exogenous ethylene, salt, cold, drought stresses and exogenous abscisic acid (ABA) treatment, suggesting that GhERF4 is regulated by certain components of the stress signaling pathway. Promoter analysis indicates that the 5′ upstream region of GhERF4 possesses some elements induced by physiological and environmental factors. We report herein facile acid-catalyzed isomerization of 1-(1‘-cycloalkenyl)cyclopropyl sulfonates under mild conditions. The remarkable ease of ring opening is attributed to the presence of a 1‘-alkyl substituent. Also included is a palladium-catalyzed ring opening reaction of 1-(1‘-cycloalkenyl)cyclopropyl tosylates for convenient preparation of substituted 1,3-dienylamines, which complements previously reported nucleophilic substitution reactions of (1-vinyl)cyclopropyl tosylates. Molecular mechanisms of cell-cycle arrest caused by gambogic acid (GA), a natural product isolated from the gamboge resin of Garcinia hanburryi tree, have been investigated using BGC-823 human gastric carcinoma cells as a model. Based on our 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)- 2,5-diphenyltetrazoliumbromide (MTT) assay and flow cytometric analysis, treatment of BGC-823 cells with growth suppressive concentrations of GA caused an irreversible arrest in the G2/M phase of the cell cycle. Western blot analysis demonstrated that GA-induced cell-cycle arrest in BGC-823 cells was associated with a significant decrease in CDC2/p34 synthesis, which led to the accumulation of phosphorylated-Tyr15 (inactive) form of CDC2/p34. Real-time PCR, western blot and kinase activity assays revealed that GA-induced reduction of CDC2/p34 expression was mediated through the inhibition of cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK)-activating kinase (CDK7/cyclin H) activity. In addition, GA-treated cells were shown to have a low level of CDK7 kinase-phosphorylated-Thr161 CDC2/p34 (active). Taken together, our results suggested that the inhibited proliferation of GA-treated BGC-823 cells was associated with the decreased production of CDK7 mRNA and protein, which in turn, resulted in the reduction of CDK7 kinase activity. The reduced CDK7 kinase activity is responsible for the inactivation of CDC2/p34 kinase and the irreversible G2/M phase cell-cycle arrest of human gastric carcinoma BGC-823 cells. Objectives: To investigate the effects and potential mechanisms of gambogic acid (GA), a naturally occurring anticancer agent, on the expression and regulation of telomerase in human gastric carcinoma cells. Methods: GA-induced inhibition of cell proliferation was evaluated by the commonly employed MTT assay on two human gastric carcinoma cell lines, MGC-803 and SGC-7901. Telomerase activity and hTERT mRNA expression were determined by telomeric repeat amplication protocol-polymerase chain reaction and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction, respectively. The hTERT promoter activity was measured by luciferase assay. The expression of c-MYC, an apoptotic gene that modulates the expression of hTERT promoter, was quantified by Western blotting. Results: The proliferation of human gastric carcinoma cell lines, MGC-803 and SGC-7901, was significantly inhibited with GA treatment. Both telomerase activity and hTERT mRNA expression were notably decreased in cells treated with GA. The activity of hTERT promoter and the expression of c-MYC were also remarkably decreased in GA-treated cells. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that GA treatment of human gastric carcinoma cell lines, MGC-803 and SGC-7901, significantly reduced the expression of c-MYC in a time- and concentration-dependent manner accompanied with the down-regulation of the hTERT transcription and the ultimate reduction in telomerase activity. The phylogeny and evolutionary history of the rice tribe (Oryzeae) were explored using sequences of five DNA fragments (matK, trnL, nad1, Adh2, and GPA1) from chloroplast, mitochondrial, and nuclear genomes. Results indicate that (1) Oryzeae is monophyletic and falls into two main clades corresponding to the traditionally recognized subtribes; (2) previous recognition of three monotypic genera (Hydrochloa, Porteresia, and Prosphytochloa) is not justified; and (3) close affinities of the monoecious genera are not supported, suggesting the possibility of multiple origins of unisexual florets. Based on the magnitude of mark and GPA1 sequence divergence, we suggest that Oryza and Leersia branched off from the remaining genera of Oryzeae ∼20 million years ago (mya), and separated from each other ∼14 mya. A divergence time of ∼9 mya is obtained for the most basal split within Oryza. These estimates suggest that Oryzeae diverged during the Miocene, and thus imply that long-distance dispersal appears to be one of the important factors in the diversification of the tribe. The capillary model was used to analyze the hydraulic conditions in the deep bed filtration process. The physicochemical interaction forces between the filter media and suspended particles and their influence on deep bed filtration process were also studied theoretically. Through the comparison of the hydraulic and physicochemical forces, the key influencing factors on the filtration process were proposed and investigated. Pilot study of the micro- flocculation deep bed filtration was carried out in the No. 9 Potable Water Treatment Plant of Beijing, and the experimental results of hydraulic head loss, particle distribution and entrapment were presented. The theoretical prediction was reasonably consistent with the experimental results under different conditions, which indicated that the regulation and control of micro-flocculation and deep bed filtration could be realized by the evaluation of the physicochemical interactions. Further theoretical and experimental research should be carried out to investigate the interaction mechanism and its application in the deep bed filtration and other cases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This review delineates several reported methods for the synthesis of isoprostanes and neuroprostanes with particular emphasis on the stereocontrolled construction of a suitably functionalized cyclopentane core. The α- and ω-side chains of these PG-like molecules are typically assembled by Wittig-type olefination reactions, standard transformations in the PG synthesis. The synthetic strategies include free radical cyclizations, a palladium-promoted coupling of three different components, an intramolecular cyclopropanation reaction-ring-opening sequence, a [2+2] photocycloaddition-ring-opening metathesis approach, and an intramolecular cross-coupling reaction of an alkyl iodide and a tethered alkenylsiloxane. Summary Sterols have long been associated with diverse fields, such as cancer treatment, drug development, and plant growth; however, their underlying mechanisms and functions remain enigmatic. Here, we unveil a critical role played by a GmNF‐YC9‐mediated CCAAT‐box transcription complex in modulating the steroid metabolism pathway within soybeans. Specifically, this complex directly activates squalene monooxygenase (GmSQE1), which is a rate‐limiting enzyme in steroid synthesis. Our findings demonstrate that overexpression of either GmNF‐YC9 or GmSQE1 significantly enhances soybean stress tolerance, while the inhibition of SQE weakens this tolerance. Field experiments conducted over two seasons further reveal increased yields per plant in both GmNF‐YC9 and GmSQE1 overexpressing plants under drought stress conditions. This enhanced stress tolerance is attributed to the reduction of abiotic stress‐induced cell oxidative damage. Transcriptome and metabolome analyses shed light on the upregulation of multiple sterol compounds, including fucosterol and soyasaponin II, in GmNF‐YC9 and GmSQE1 overexpressing soybean plants under stress conditions. Intriguingly, the application of soybean steroids, including fucosterol and soyasaponin II, significantly improves drought tolerance in soybean, wheat, foxtail millet, and maize. These findings underscore the pivotal role of soybean steroids in countering oxidative stress in plants and offer a new research strategy for enhancing crop stress tolerance and quality from gene regulation to chemical intervention.
