In recent years, news media have increased reporting about alleged foreign interference in universities worldwide. A flurry of new policies has followed. This article reviews discourse and policy on foreign interference in higher education in select countries. It identifies the alleged perpetrators and victims, the victims' concerns and responses, and the voices shaping the narrative about foreign interference. We combine the concepts of sharp power and right-wing authoritarianism to inform a discourse analysis and comparative policy analysis of a data set of 161 news articles and related media sources spanning a 30-month period of 2019-2021. Our findings highlight how government actors within the United States and Australia drive the international English-language discourse about Chinese foreign interference in a polarized media environment. We observe well-founded fears of China's exploitation of international students and research collaborations to the detriment of national security. At the same time, a resurgent worldwide authoritarian movement is also exploiting these concerns to augment longstanding assaults on higher education. Our study helps to bridge the gap between the primarily positive framing of the internationalization of higher education in scholarly discourse and the negative focus on foreign interference in higher education in the media, government, and other public discourse. It also serves as an important introduction to this phenomenon and call to action for scholars of the internationalization of higher education to conduct further research and actively engage in the broader discourse around this topic.

Cross-border American higher education is often conflated with international branch campuses. But there are other institutional forms, such as microcampuses, international joint universities, and independent universities. The different forms developed at different times with different missions and serve different roles. Reflecting on their histories and functions provides an opportunity to appreciate the scope and variety of American higher education abroad. Contemporary relations among higher education institutions are often viewed through a lens of competition. But careful consideration of American institutions abroad demonstrates a history of collaboration. The principle of mutuality provides a framework to help international campuses to operate in ways that oppose colonialism. Stateside educators can be key partners for colleagues overseas. Continued and expanded collaboration will be critical in the years ahead when the geopolitical environment for international education is uncertain at best. In this article, the author reviews the discourse about and history of international campuses before offering suggestions for strengthening them.

2020 promises to be a watershed year for American foreign policy. In February, the United States struck a deal with the Taliban that would withdraw troops from Afghanistan, ending America's longest and most expensive war. A month earlier, the Iraqi parliament voted to expel American soldiers from the country. With the potential departure of U.S. forces from these countries, it is important to ask about the American legacy. How will the United States be remembered in the Middle East: as a destructive interloper or, as U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo suggested in a speech at the American University in Cairo in 2019, "a force for good"? We know that Afghanistan and Iraq have experienced American hard power, but how receptive are they to American soft power? A review of the countries' national higher education contexts, international exchanges, and American universities provides insights into the power of attraction in these post-conflict settings.

In 2018/2019, two large Guillain–Barré Syndrome (GBS) outbreaks took place in Peru. Here, we report a comprehensive analysis of biological samples from GBS patients from the 2019 outbreak. We applied metagenomic, microbiologic, and serological analyses to different biological samples collected from GBS patients. Further phenotypic and genomic characterization was conducted on Campylobacter jejuni isolates from GBS samples. Microbiologic and metagenomic analyses revealed several patients with multiple co-infections, yet no common infectious agents were found other than C. jejuni. Four C. jejuni isolates were isolated from rectal swabs. Twenty-one patients had detectable IgG serum antibodies related to C. jejuni, of whom seven had IgM antibodies. Genomic analyses showed that these four strains were clonal (ST2993) and contained the class A lipooligosaccharide biosynthesis locus. These results further support the idea that that C. jejuni is the etiological agent that triggered the GBS outbreak in Peru in 2019 and that the strains are not restricted to Peru, hence could be regarded as a broad public health concern. Furthermore, though we cannot delineate the role played by co-infections in GBS development, results obtained herein highlight metagenomic analysis as a potential new tool for depicting a yet unknown area of research in GBS. Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, commentators in broadly accessible media have offered a surfeit of predictions about the future of higher education. Due to the absence of accountability mechanisms, however, the accuracy of these claims has been heretofore unknown. Research shows that op-eds and other forms of public scholarship influence public policy, heightening the significance of predictions. This paper asks who makes predictions about higher education, in what venues they issue them, on what topics they make predictions, and how accurate they are. It answers these questions by drawing from an original data set of 91 distinct predictions issued by 22 unique authors in 31 separate texts across a 19-month time span from March 2020 to October 2021. It finds that predictions most often appeared in op-eds written by senior academic white men in higher education trade journals. More than half of predictions could not be evaluated a year or more after they were first issued. Still, predictions with determinable outcomes tended to bear out accurately. Enrollment patterns and teaching modalities were the most common topics. Women and people of color were significantly under-represented among predictors. This article introduces the concept of "university in exile" and situates this phenomenon in the context of rising authoritarianism around the world. The authors examine the causes and consequences of HEIs going into exile by considering five examples. They conclude that democratically-oriented HEIs with strong global partnerships are the most likely both to go into exile and to survive it, and argue that defenders of democracy around the world should support these institutions. This article examines dual forces impacting international campuses of US universities: isolationist retrenchment and neoliberal expansion. It uses the recent closure of Texas A&M University's branch in Qatar to explore how domestic disputes are playing out internationally. It argues that the overall landscape for international campuses remains favorable to expansion, while also acknowledging worrisome trends. Conventional wisdom about American campuses abroad suggests that they are typically vanity projects for cosmopolitans. This view reflects only a partial reality. A new database from the Global American Higher Education initiative shows that the landscape is more diverse and inclusive than commonly understood. Theory and research suggest that schizotypy is a personality construct characterized by self-regulatory problems and that self-talk serves a variety of self-regulatory functions. In this study, undergraduates (N = 379) completed multidimensional measures of schizotypy and self-talk. Results provided strong support for a greater self-regulatory focus hypothesis, with positive and disorganized schizotypy factors positively and significantly correlated with self-talk factors, but negative schizotypy factors unrelated to self-talk frequency. The article explores reinfection from severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which represented an important data point in the ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Questions have arisen regarding the timing and severity of reinfections, for which we offer a case report of symptomatic reinfection within 90 days.
