Abstract Epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) significantly contributes to the progression of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). However, manually quantifying EAT volume is labor-intensive and susceptible to human error. Although there have been some deep learning-based methods for automatic quantification of EAT, they are mostly uninterpretable and fail to harness the complete anatomical characteristics. In this study, we proposed an enhanced deep learning method designed for EAT quantification on coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) scan, which integrated both data-driven method and specific morphological information. A total of 108 patients who underwent routine CCTA examinations were included in this study. They were randomly assigned to training set (n = 60), validation set (n = 8), and test set (n = 40). We quantified and calculated the EAT volume based on the CT attenuation values within the predicted pericardium. The automatic method demonstrated strong agreement with expert manual quantification, yielding a median Dice score coefficients (DSC) of 0.916 (Interquartile Range (IQR): 0.846–0.948) for 2D slices. Microplastics have emerged as a significant global concern, particularly in marine ecosystems. While extensive research has focused on the toxicological effects of microplastics on marine animals and/or their associated microorganisms as two separate entities, the holistic perspective of the adaptability and fitness of a marine animal metaorganism—comprising the animal host and its microbiome—remains largely unexplored. In this study, mussel metaorganisms subjected chronic PS-MPs exposure experienced acute mortality but rapidly adapted. We investigated the response of innate immunity, digestive enzymes and their associated microbiomes to chronic PS-MPs exposure. We found that PS-MPs directly and indirectly interacted with the host and microbe within the exposure system. The adaptation was a joint effort between the physiological adjustments of mussel host and genetic adaptation of its microbiome. The mussel hosts exhibited increased antioxidant activity, denser gill filaments and increased immune cells, enhancing their innate immunity. Concurrently, the gill microbiome and the digestive gland microbiome respective selectively enriched for plastic-degrading bacteria and particulate organic matter-utilizing bacteria, facilitating the microbiome’s adaptation. The microbial adaptation to chronic PS-MPs exposure altered the ecological roles of mussel microbiome, as evidenced by alterations in microbial interactions and nutrient cycling functions. These findings provided new insights into the ecotoxicological impact of microplastics on marine organisms from a metaorganism perspective.

Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for gastrointestinal tumors and premalignant lesions needs submucosal fluid cushion (SFC) for mucosal uplift before dissection, and wound care including wound closure and rapid healing postoperatively. Current SFC materials as well as materials and/or methods for post-ESD wound care have single treatment effect and hold corresponding drawbacks, such as easy dispersion, short duration, weak hemostasis and insufficient repair function. Thus, designing materials that can serve as both SFC materials and wound care is highly desired, and remains a challenge. Herein, we report a two-component in-situ hydrogel prepared from maleimide-based oxidized sodium alginate and sulfhydryl carboxymethyl-chitosan, which gelated mainly based on ''click'' chemistry and Schiff base reaction. The hydrogels showed short gelation time, outstanding tissue adhesion, favorable hemostatic properties, and good biocompatibility. A rat subcutaneous ultrasound model confirmed the ability of suitable mucosal uplift height and durable maintenance time of AM solution. The in vivo/in vitro rabbit liver hemorrhage model demonstrated the effects of hydrogel in rapid hemostasis and prevention of delayed bleeding. The canine esophageal ESD model corroborated that the in-situ hydrogel provided good mucosal uplift and wound closure effects, and significantly accelerated wound healing with accelerating re-epithelization and ECM remodeling post-ESD. The two-component in-situ hydrogels exhibited great potential in gastrointestinal tract ESD.

Gas temperature is one of the critical parameters that affects the velocity, temperature of particle and the consequent coating quality in cold spray additive manufacturing. The accurate control of the gas temperature is of great importance to the stability of the gas heating efficiency, deposition efficiency, and microstructure of coatings. Therefore, a numerical model was established using ANSYS-FLUENT to study the influence of PID strategy and traditional switch control strategy on the precise temperature of cold spraying gas. Results showed that both the stable time and the overshoot of gas temperature were significantly optimized when the PID strategy was applied. Moreover, the influences of the three factors (proportional, integral and derivative) in PID strategy on the stable time and the overshoot of gas temperature were investigated using an orthogonal experiment. The experimental results showed that the stable time and the overshoot were mainly affected by the proportional parameter and the integral parameter, respectively. With the increase of the proportional parameter and the integral parameter, the stable time and the overshoot rate reduced, and the control accuracy of the gas temperature increased.

Peri-implant disease (PID) is a general term for inflammatory diseases of soft and hard tissues that occur around implants, including peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis. Cytokines are a class of small molecule proteins, which have various functions such as regulating innate immunity, adaptive immunity, and repairing damaged tissues. In order to explore the characteristics and clinical significance of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-6, IL-10, and tumor growth factor (TGF)-β1 expression levels in serum of patients with peri-implant disease, 31 patients with PID and 31 patients without PID were enrolled. The modified plaque index (mPLI), modified sulcus bleeding index (mSBI), and peri-implant probing depth (PD) were recorded. The levels of serum TNF-α, IL-6, IL-10, and TGF-β1 were detected by ELISA. TNF-α, mPLI, mSBI, and PD levels were significantly higher in the PID group. TGF-β1 levels were significantly higher in the control group. There was a significant positive correlation between TNF-α and mPLI, mSBI, and PD. TGF-β1 was negatively associated with TNF-α, mPLI, mSBI, and PD. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that TNF-α and PD were risk factors for the severity of PID. The receiver operating curve analysis showed that high TNF-α levels (cut-off value of 140 pg/mL) and greater PD values (cut-off value of 4 mm) were good predictors of PID severity with an area under the curve of 0.922. These results indicated that TNF-α and PD can be used as a biological indicator for diagnosing the occurrence and progression of PID.

Abstract Rapid and effective control of non‐compressible massive hemorrhage poses a great challenge in first‐aid and clinical settings. Herein, a biopolymer‐based powder is developed for the control of non‐compressible hemorrhage. The powder is designed to facilitate rapid hemostasis by its excellent hydrophilicity, great specific surface area, and adaptability to the shape of wound, enabling it to rapidly absorb fluid from the wound. Specifically, the powder can undergo sequential cross‐linking based on “click” chemistry and Schiff base reaction upon contact with the blood, leading to rapid self‐gelling. It also exhibits robust tissue adhesion through covalent/non‐covalent interactions with the tissues (adhesive strength: 89.57 ± 6.62 KPa, which is 3.75 times that of fibrin glue). Collectively, this material leverages the fortes of powder and hydrogel. Experiments with animal models for severe bleeding have shown that it can reduce the blood loss by 48.9%. Studies on the hemostatic mechanism also revealed that, apart from its physical sealing effect, the powder can enhance blood cell adhesion, capture fibrinogen, and synergistically induce the formation of fibrin networks. Taken together, this hemostatic powder has the advantages for convenient preparation, sprayable use, and reliable hemostatic effect, conferring it with a great potential for the control of non‐compressible hemorrhage.

The study of unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) operating under unstructured roads is of great significance to intelligent transportation, agricultural development and military technology. In order to ensure reliable and stable operation of UGVs on unstructured terrain, it is necessary to identify the current road terrain and perform vehicle stability adjustment. Road terrain identification is a prerequisite for stability control. Most of the existing road terrain identification methods use a single vehicle sensor, which has the problem that complex algorithms need to be applied for data processing, which reduces the real-time performance. Moreover, the single sensor is weak in anti-interference and limited in recognizing the road. To address these problems, a method is proposed to collect vehicle motion data using on-board gyroscope sensors and velocity sensors. Back propagation (BP) neural network is used to identify the category of the road. For the problem that the conventional proportional-integral differential (PID) algorithm cannot be adapted to different road stability control, a multi-loop adaptive proportional-integral differential (PID) control system with the velocity loop as the outer loop and the torque (current) loop as the inner loop is proposed. In order to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the method, experiments are conducted on a UGV using robot operating system (ROS), and the results verify the feasibility and superiority of the road identification and stability control method proposed in this paper. It provides a good theoretical basis and valuable technical guidance for the UGV operation and control on unstructured roads.

We present herein a rare case of large vascular and cardiac metastases of low-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma (LG-ESS) in a female patient, which occurred after misdiagnosis of endometrial stromal nodule (ESN) as submucosal leiomyoma 7 years ago. Preoperative three-dimensional CT reconstruction was used to assess the extent of the lesion. The patient underwent radical resection: thrombectomy and total hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy without establishing the cardiopulmonary bypass. Intraoperative transesophageal ultrasound (TEE) was used to monitor whether the intracardiac mass was removed completely. To date, this patient is alive without any evidence of recurrence 3 years after surgery. The differential diagnosis of ESN and LG-ESS is often difficult. A clear distinction can only be reliably made after histological analysis of the tumor’s entire interface with the neighboring myometrium. This case highlights that follow-ups of patients with ESN are important. Regular follow-up can detect metastasis and recurrence of misdiagnosed LG-ESS as early as possible. Distant metastasis of LG-ESS is rare, especially involving large vessels or the heart. The treatment should largely rely on multidisciplinary cooperation. Although the surgery is traumatic, the perioperative mortality rate is low, and patients can avoid death from congestive heart failure or sudden death.
