13. The Past, Present, and Future of Cross-Cultural Psychology.

Abstract

Cross-cultural psychology had its beginnings at the turn of the century when W. H. R. Rivers made his famous investigations on perception and other processes. In the mid 1960's and early 1970's cross-cultural research as a method in psychology gained a momentum that led to an almost unchecked acceleration. The author details the recent growth in popularity of the field and points to the energies that can be called "hard-core" cross-cultural psychological efforts. Attention is given to the historical controversy between cross-cultural psychology and psychological anthropology. The author points to the fact that the two disciplines do not share the same data base, that is, ethnographers rely for the most part on naturally occurring mundane events while psychologists rely on experiments (experimentation versus naturalism). In the future, cross-cultural researchers in psychology will depend increasingly on cross-cultural "models." This will be done so as to integrate strategies and findings which may lead to more complete and valid generalizations about human behavior. The author closes his discussion with a brief summary of four cross-cultural models. (Author/PC)

Abstract

The role of the Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology (JCCP) over the past 40 years in enhancing attention to cultural issues within psychology is discussed. Analyses are presented showing frequencies over the past decade with which JCCP authors cite other journals and frequencies with which authors in other journals cite JCCP authors. JCCP's impact factor over four decades is compared with other relevant journals. Increased coverage in recent years of cultural issues in introductory psychology texts is documented. The journal has been successful as one of the leading outlets for cross-cultural studies and has achieved substantial influence, as measured by citations in relevant literature, in establishing the role culture plays in a broad variety of psychological issues and perspectives.

30. The Influence of Television on Measured Cognitive Abilities: A Study with Native Alaskan Children.

Presents results of a study in rural Alaska to assess effects of commercial television, installed in 1977, on the Inupiat Eskimo group and the Tlingit and Haida Indians. Predictor variables included age, sex, culture area, and amount of television watched. Results indicated no major effects of television by itself on cognitive abilities. (SA)

This subunit and its future extensions are intended for use in courses of study that focus, either partially or completely, on psychology and culture. The content of these contributions are expected to be helpful to both teachers and students because they address the nature and scope of the inclusion of culture in basic psychology instruction – especially as it pertains to the coverage of culture in the ubiquitous (at least in the Western world) introductory psychology texts (IPTs). In this paper we present data that document the extent to which authors of IPTs have dealt with culture over a 20-year period from 1988 to 2008.
