O objetivo do estudo foi verificar, por meio de avaliação em imagens por tomografia computadorizada de feixe cônico (TCFC), se o LPM influencia em parâmetros anatômicos das ATM de indivíduos com disfunção temporomandibular (DTM) de origem articular. Para este estudo, 106 exames (212 ATM) de TCFC foram analisados, sendo 56 exames (112 ATM) de voluntários sem o diagnóstico de DTM (grupo controle - GC) e 50 exames (100 ATM) de indivíduos com diagnóstico de DTM de origem articular (grupo experimental - GE). As variáveis analisadas nos exames foram: o formato axial e o formato paracoronal das cabeças das mandíbulas (côndilos), o grau de translação e o grau de rotação articulares, o volume das cabeças das mandíbulas, a altura e a inclinação dos tubérculos articulares. Para estudar os fatores lado, LPM e grupo foram construídos, para cada variável analisada, quatro modelos de Equações de Estimação Generalizadas (EEG) e o nível de significância adotado foi de 5%. Apenas uma interação significante foi observada entre grupo e LPM para explicar o formato axial da cabeça da mandíbula (p-valor < 0,001). No entanto, dois tipos do formato axial foram excluídos do GE por não serem observados no LPM esquerdo, e após essa exclusão, o LPM não modificou a possibilidade de o paciente apresentar qualquer um dos outros três formatos axiais (p-valor > 0,05). Dessa forma, os resultados evidenciaram que o LPM não exerceu influência sobre os parâmetros estruturais e dinâmicos das ATM de indivíduos com DTM de origem articular. No entanto, estudos complementares são necessários para que nossos resultados possam ser replicados em amostras maiores. Chewing can be done bilaterally, but most people have a chewing side preference (CSP). The objective of the study was to verify, through image evaluation using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), if the CSP influences anatomical parameters of the TMJ of individuals with temporomandibular disorder (TMD) of joint origin. For this study, 106 exams (212 TMJ) of CBCT were analyzed, being 56 exams (112 TMJ) of volunteers without the diagnosis of TMD (control group - CG) and 50 exams (100 TMJ) of individuals diagnosed with TMD of origin articular (experimental group - EG). The variables analyzed in the exams were: the axial format and paracoronal format of the heads of the mandible (condyles), the degree of translation and the degree of articular rotation, the volume of the heads of the mandibles, the height and inclination of the articular tubercles. To study the side, CSP and group factors, four models of Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE) were built for each variable analyzed and the significance level adopted was 5%. Only one significant interaction was observed between group and CSP to explain the axial format of the head of mandible (p-value < 0.001). However, two types of axial format were excluded from the EG because they were not observed in the left CSP, and after this exclusion, the CSP did not change the possibility that the patient had any of the other three axial format (p-value > 0.05 ). Thus, the results showed that the CSP did not influence the structural and dynamic parameters of the TMJ of individuals with TMD of joint origin. However, further studies are needed so that our results can be replicated in larger samples.

Foram selecionados 1190 exames de TCFC de 05 regiões geográficas do Brasil, subdivididos de acordo com as proporções da quantidade populacional, gênero, idade e raça em cada uma das regiões. Todas as imagens foram exportadas para os 02 softwares – ITK-Snap® (Kitware, New York, USA) e Ondemand 3D® (CyberMed, Seoul, Republic of Korea) – onde por meio de segmentação semi-automática, por 01 avaliador, previamente treinado, foram calculados os volumes correspondentes à câmara pulpar (CM) e canais radiculares (CR). Os dados foram tabulados e submetidos a análise estatística. Utilizou-se o Teste t de Student para comparar as médias dos grupos. O teste de Mann-Whitney, o teste do Qui-quadrado ou o teste de Fisher para comparação das medianas. Foram apresentados gráficos Box-plot dos volumes segundo gênero e etnia, em cada dente, para cada software. Para comparação dos volumes com a idade, utilizaram-se gráficos de dispersão. Para a predição do gênero ou da etnia, foram construídos modelos de regressão logísticos e para a predição da idade, utilizou-se um modelo de regressão linear. A comparação entre os softwares foi feita com uso do gráfico de dispersão entre as medidas. Os resultados indicaram que apenas a etnia medida pelo ITK-Snap pode ser estimada por meio do volume da câmara pulpar dos caninos (p=0,007). Não houve diferenças globais entre os desempenhos dos dois softwares, sendo o software ITK-Snap o único a indicar que apenas a etnia dos indivíduos pode ser estimada por meio dos valores do volume da câmara pulpar de caninos, o qual apresenta-se maior em indivíduos da raça branca. The objective of this study was to compare the performance of 02 imaging software to obtain pulp cavity volume values in cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images as a means of identification forensic tool.Were selected 1190 CFCT exams from 05 geographic regions of Brazil, subdivided according to the proportions of population size, gender, age and race in each of the regions. All images were exported to the software 02 - ITK-Snap® (Kitware, New York, USA) and Ondemand 3D® (CyberMed, Seoul, Republic of Korea) - where by means of semi-automatic segmentation, by 01 evaluator, previously trained, the volumes corresponding to the pulp chamber (CM) and root canals (CR) were calculated. The data were tabulated and submitted to statistical analysis. Student's t-test was used to compare the means of the groups. The Mann-Whitney test, the chi-square test or the Fisher's test for comparison of the medians. Box-plot graphs of volumes according to gender and ethnicity were presented for each tooth for each software. For comparison of volumes with age, scatter plots were used. For the prediction of gender or ethnicity, logistic regression models were constructed and for the prediction of age, a linear regression model was used. The comparison between the software was made using the scatter plot between measurements. The results indicated that only the ethnicity measured by the ITK-Snap can be estimated by the volume of the canine pulp chamber (p = 0.007). There were no overall differences between the performances of the two software, with ITK-Snap software being the only one to indicate that only the ethnicity of the individuals can be estimated by means of the values of the pulp chamber volume of canines, which is higher in individuals of the white race.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a possível relação entre três parâmetros geométricos do músculo pterigóideo lateral (MPL) – o ângulo entre seu longo eixo do e o plano sagital mediano (ANG), seu volume (VOL) e a intensidade do seu sinal (SIN) – e a presença de desarranjos discais (posição e função do disco) em articulações temporomandibulares (ATM) e a presença de dor e ruído articulares, por meio de imagens de ressonância magnética (RM). Foram analisados 39 exames de (RM) (78 ATM) de indivíduos com idades entRe 16 a 71 anos, obtidos em protocolo específico para análise das ATM, pertencentes ao arquivo da disciplina de Radiologia. Foi utilizado o software OnDemand 3D (Cybermed, Seul, Coréia do Sul) para obtenção dos ANG e o software itkSNAP 4.3 (www.itksnap.org) para segmentação do MPL e obtenção de VOL e SIN. A angulação, volume e intensidade do sinal do MPL foram comparados com: posição e função do disco articular, dor articular e presença de ruídos articulares, por meio do teste t de Student, com nível de significância de 5%. Os resultados indicaram que foram encontradas diferenças significativas apenas entre a presença de dor no MPL e sua angulação (p0,05). Concluiu-se que, na amostra estudada, um valor maior do ângulo sagital do MPL relacionava-se com a presença de dor neste grupo muscular. Magnetic resonance imaging is the examination of choice for the study of temporomandibular disc disorders, considering its high definition of soft tissues. The objective of this study was to evaluate the possible relationship between three geometric parameters of the lateral pterygoid muscle (LPM) - angle between its long axis and median sagittal plane (ANG), its volume (VOL) and its signal intensity (SIN) – and disc derangements (disc position and disc function) of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), joint pain. A total of 39 magnetic resonance (MRI) exams (78 TMJ) were analyzed from individuals aged 16 to 71 years, obtained in a specific protocol for the analysis of TMJ, belonging to the archive of the discipline of Radiology. OnDemand 3D software (Cybermed, Seoul, South Korea) was used to obtain ANG and itkSNAP 4.3 software (www.itksnap.org) for LPM segmentation and obtaining VOL and SIN. The LPM angle, volume and signal intensity were compared to: position and function of the articular disc, articular pain and presence of articular noise, using Student's t test, with a level of significance of 5%. The results indicated that significant differences were found only between the presence of LPM pain and its angle (p 0.05). It was concluded that, in this sample, a greater value of the sagittal angle of LPM was related to the presence of pain in this muscle group
