Macroeconomic policy and industrial sector performance have been at the centre of economic discourse in recent times. The general assumption is that macroeconomic policy instruments can enhance performance of the real sector. We examined the short and long run effects, of specific policy instruments combination, on each industrial sub-sector by decomposing industry into three major parts. The nonlinear ARDL bound test approach to co-integration is employed as estimation technique. It was found that a long-run bound relationship exists between selected policy variables and each industrial sub-sector. Error correction terms show that short run disequilibrium can be corrected in the long run without extended lag period. Financial deepening, exchange rate depreciation and economic openness are significant in the long run while monetary policy rate is effective in the short run. Deepening of financial system and prudential management of macroeconomic framework are recommended essential for industrial growth in Nigeria. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper examined the role of macroeconomic variables such real investments, trade openness, exchange rate, inflation rate, real per capital income, oil revenue in enhancing economic diversification and preventing resources curse hypothesis. It also established the threshold level for investment and the cost of avoiding the oil resource curse hypothesis for effective diversification in an oil rich African developing economy like Nigeria. Normalised Hirschman Index was used to determine degree of diversification while conventional fully modified ordinary least square (FMOLS) to estimate the models. The result showed that the systematic variation in diversification index is caused by variation in exchange rate, trade openness, inflation, gross fixed capital formation and gross domestic product and the results were not sensitive to model specification and estimation technique. The result confirmed the resource hypothesis. It is also established that there as much as 16% deficit in investment as the economy required a minimum of 30% investment as ratio GDP. Similarly, per capital income needed to stimulate economic diversification need to be raised beyond a threshold of $1380.3 billion for effective diversification. The main policy implication is that investment level and per capita income must be greater than this threshold if the vicious circle poverty and sustainable development is to be achieved in Nigeria. Background: The incidence of adrenal hemorrhagic pseudocyst is very low. A total of 613 adrenal cysts and 85 hemorrhagic pseudocysts have been reported. A Iaparoscopically diagnosed and resolved case is presented here, together with the current diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Methods: A 40-year-old woman was admitted because of an asymptomatic nonfunctional right adrenal tumor. Right laparoscopic adrenalectomy was performed, 8-cm cyst which found an with thick walls and organized hematic content. The postoperative course was uneventful. Follow-up was 14 months. The pathology was an adrenal hemorrhagic pseudocyst. Discussion: A total of 56% of adrenal cysts are pseudocysts. One third of them have hematic content. They may present as an asymptornatic finding with nonspecific symptoms or as a hormone secreting or complicated tumor. Their vascular etiology is not yet totally accepted. There is a tendency for intracystic bleeding. It is advisable to evaluate the hormonal profile and morphologic characteristics in all cases. Treatment options include needle aspiration, percutaneous drainage, and cyst or gland resection. Laparoscopic excision should be evaluated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Primary hypophysitis (PH) is a rare disease that represents a challenge among differential diagnosis and management. Our aim was to describe clinical characteristics, diagnostic criteria and different treatment outcomes in patients with PH. Multicentric, retrospective study. Clinical presentation, endocrine function, magnetic resonance imaging findings, visual field defects at diagnosis and treatment outcomes were recorded., Methods: Twenty-eight patients (23 women), with PH were included. Median age: 37., Results: The most frequent symptoms: headache: 68%, polyuria-polydipsia: 50% and visual disturbances: 48%. At diagnosis, anterior pituitary deficiency was present in 71%, being hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism the most frequent manifestation. The radiological findings: symmetric lesion: 78.5%, homogeneous enhancement: 78.5% and pituitary stalk thickening: 70%. Association with pregnancy or puerperium was found in 4/23 women (17%). Fourteen patients did not receive any treatment ("wait and see" group), 8 underwent surgery for mass reduction or resection and 6 were treated with immunosuppression therapy. Among 15 patients with histopathological diagnosis, 9 were lymphocytic hypophysitis, 5 IgG4 related hypophysitis and 1 xanthomatous hypophysitis. Thirteen were diagnosed by established clinical criteria. Mass reduction was observed in 43% of "wait and see group" patients, 62.5% of operated patients and 50% with immunosuppression therapy. Compressive symptoms showed improvement in the 3 groups, with modest effect on anterior pituitary function, diabetes insipidus did not resolve in any patients., Discussion: In patients without severe compressive symptoms, we adopted a "wait and see" approach. In patients with uncertain diagnosis of PH or severe compressive symptoms, transsphenoidal surgery was the best option.

Purpose: Current international guidelines recommend colonoscopy in patients with acromegaly at the time of diagnosis, even though the risk of developing colorectal neoplasm is still controversial. The main objective of this Argentine multicenter study was to analyze through screening colonoscopy the presence of advanced neoplastic lesions considered as precancerous, in patients with acromegaly compared to a control group., Methods: This is a case-control retrospective study. Full length colonoscopy of 70 acromegalic patients and 128 control subjects were studied. Polyps were classified into non pre-cancerous lesions and advance neoplastic lesions which included advanced adenomas (preneoplastic) and colorectal carcinomas., Results: Thirty three out of 70 acromegalic patients and 32 out of 128 subjects controls presented polyps in the colonoscopy [47.1% vs 25%, p = 0.002, OR 2.68]. Non precancerous polyps were found in 11 (15.7%) and 23 (17.9%) (p = 0.690), while advanced neoplastic lesions were found in 22 (31.4%) and 9 (7.0%) (p = 0,0001 - OR: 6.06) patients and controls respectively. Advanced adenomas and colorectal carcinomas were found in 18 (27.3%) and 9 (7.0%) (p = 0,0006-OR: 4,57), and 4 (5.7%) and 0 (0.0%) p = 0.0063) of patients and controls respectively. The presence of insulin resistance was the only statistically significant associated factor among acromegalic patients with and without colonic polyps., Conclusions: Our findings show an increased risk of preneoplastic colonic lesions and colorectal carcinoma in patients with chronic and sustained GH excess compared to a control group. This supports the recommendation to perform screening colonoscopy at diagnosis of acromegaly.

Unlabelled: IgG4-related hypophysitis is a recently described entity belonging to the group of IgG4-related diseases. Many other organs can also be affected, and it is more common in older men. To date, 32 cases of IgG4-related hypophysitis have been reported in the literature, 11 of which included confirmatory tissue biopsy and the majority affecting multiple organs. The aim of this report is to present two cases of biopsy-proven IgG4-related hypophysitis occurring in two young female patients with no evidence of involvement of other organs at the time of diagnosis., Learning Points: IgG4-related hypophysitis belongs to the group of IgG4-related diseases, and is a fibro-inflammatory condition characterized by dense lymphoplasmacytic infiltrates rich in IgG4-positive plasma cells and storiform fibrosis.It is more common in older men, but young women may also present this type of hypophysitis.Although involvement of other organs is frequent, isolated pituitary disease is possible.Frequent clinical manifestations include anterior hypopituitarism and/or diabetes insipidus.THE DIAGNOSIS MAY BE CONFIRMED WITH ANY OF THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA: a pituitary biopsy with lymphoplasmacytic infiltrates, with more than ten IgG4-positive cells; a sellar mass and/or thickened pituitary stalk and a biopsy-proven involvement of another organ; a sellar mass and/or thickened pituitary stalk and IgG4 serum levels >140 mg/dl and sellar mass reduction and symptom improvement after corticosteroid treatment.Glucocorticoids are recommended as first-line therapy.
