An incremental version of the fourth catalog of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) detected by the Fermi-Large Area Telescope is presented. This version (4LAC-DR3) derives from the third data release of the 4FGL catalog based on 12 years of E>50 MeV gamma-ray data, where the spectral parameters, spectral energy distributions (SEDs), yearly light curves, and associations have been updated for all sources. The new reported AGNs include 587 blazar candidates and four radio galaxies. We describe the properties of the new sample and outline changes affecting the previously published one. We also introduce two new parameters in this release, namely the peak energy of the SED high-energy component and the corresponding flux. These parameters allow an assessment of the Compton dominance, the ratio of the Inverse-Compton to the synchrotron peak luminosities, without relying on X-ray data., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series. We present an incremental version (4FGL-DR3, for Data Release 3) of the fourth Fermi-LAT catalog of gamma-ray sources. Based on the first twelve years of science data in the energy range from 50 MeV to 1 TeV, it contains 6658 sources. The analysis improves on that used for the 4FGL catalog over eight years of data: more sources are fit with curved spectra, we introduce a more robust spectral parameterization for pulsars, and we extend the spectral points to 1 TeV. The spectral parameters, spectral energy distributions, and associations are updated for all sources. Light curves are rebuilt for all sources with 1 yr intervals (not 2 month intervals). Among the 5064 original 4FGL sources, 16 were deleted, 112 are formally below the detection threshold over 12 yr (but are kept in the list), while 74 are newly associated, 10 have an improved association, and seven associations were withdrawn. Pulsars are split explicitly between young and millisecond pulsars. Pulsars and binaries newly detected in LAT sources, as well as more than 100 newly classified blazars, are reported. We add three extended sources and 1607 new point sources, mostly just above the detection threshold, among which eight are considered identified, and 699 have a plausible counterpart at other wavelengths. We discuss degree-scale residuals to the global sky model and clusters of soft unassociated point sources close to the Galactic plane, which are possibly related to limitations of the interstellar emission model and missing extended sources., Comment: accepted in ApJS; follow-up paper to 1902.10045

The uncharted territory of the high-redshift ($z\gtrsim3$) Universe holds the key to understand the evolution of quasars. In an attempt to identify the most extreme members of the quasar population, i.e., blazars, we have carried out a multi-wavelength study of a large sample of radio-loud quasars beyond $z=3$. Our sample consists of 9 $\gamma$-ray detected blazars and 133 candidate blazars selected based on the flatness of their soft X-ray spectra (0.3$-$10 keV photon index $\leq1.75$), including 15 with NuSTAR observations. The application of the likelihood profile stacking technique reveals that the high-redshift blazars are faint $\gamma$-ray emitters with steep spectra. The high-redshift blazars host massive black holes ($\langle \log~M_{\rm BH,~M{\odot}} \rangle>9$) and luminous accretion disks ($\langle L_{\rm disk} \rangle>10^{46}$ erg s$^{-1}$). Their broadband spectral energy distributions are found to be dominated by high-energy radiation indicating their jets to be among the most luminous ones. Focusing on the sources exhibiting resolved X-ray jets (as observed with the Chandra satellite), we find the bulk Lorentz factor to be larger with respect to other $z>3$ blazars, indicating faster moving jets. We conclude that the presented list of the high-redshift blazars may act as a reservoir for follow-up observations, e.g., with NuSTAR, to understand the evolution of relativistic jets at the dawn of the Universe., Comment: To appear in the Astrophysical journal. We present multi-frequency simultaneous VLBI radio observations of the flat spectrum radio quasar 1633+382 (4C~38.41) as part of the interferometric monitoring of gamma-ray bright active galactic nuclei (iMOGABA) program combined with additional observations in radio, optical, X-rays and $\gamma-$rays carried out between the period 2012 March - 2015 August. The monitoring of this source reveals a significant long-lived increase in its activity since approximately two years in the radio bands, which correlates with a similar increase on all other bands from sub-millimeter to $\gamma-$rays. A significant correlation is also found between radio fluxes and simultaneous spectral indices during this period. The study of the discrete correlation function (DCF) indicates time lags smaller than the $\sim40$ days uncertainties among both radio bands and also high-energy bands, and a time lag of $\sim$70 days, with $\gamma-$rays leading radio. We interpret that the high-energy and radio fluxes are arising from different emitting regions, located at $1\pm12$ and $40\pm13$ pc from the central engine respectively., Comment: 16 pages, 15 figures, and 5 tables. S5 0716+714 is a well known BL Lac object, one of the brightest and most active blazars. The discovery in the Very High Energy band (VHE, E > 100 GeV) by MAGIC happened in 2008. In January 2015 the source went through the brightest optical state ever observed, triggering MAGIC follow-up and a VHE detection with 13{\sigma} significance (ATel 6999). Rich multiwavelength coverage of the flare allowed us to construct the broad-band spectral energy distribution of S5 0716+714 during its brightest outburst. In this work we will present the preliminary analysis of MAGIC and Fermi-LAT data of the flaring activity in January and February 2015 for the HE (0.1 < HE < 300 GeV) and VHE band, together with radio (Mets\"ahovi, OVRO, VLBA, Effelsberg), sub-millimeter (SMA), optical (Tuorla, Perkins, Steward, AZT-8+ST7, LX-200, Kanata), X-ray and UV (Swift-XRT and UVOT), in the same time-window and discuss the time variability of the multiwavelength light curves during this impressive outburst., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, proceeding of the JETS 2016 conference

A prominent outburst of the flat spectrum radio quasar 3C~454.3 was observed in 2014 June with the \emph{Fermi} Large Area Telescope. This outburst was characterized by a three-stage light-curve pattern---plateau, flare and post-flare---that occurred from 2014 May to July, in a similar pattern as observed during the exceptional outburst in 2010 November. The highest flux of the outburst reported in this paper occurred during 2014 June 7--29, showing a multiple-peak structure in the light-curves. The average flux in these 22 days was found to be $F[E > 100~\mathrm{MeV}] = (7.2 \pm 0.2) \times 10^{-6}$~ph~cm$^{-2}$~s$^{-1}$, with a spectral index, for a simple power law, of $\Gamma = 2.04 \pm 0.01$. That made this outburst the first $\gamma$-ray high state of 3C~454.3 ever to be detected by \emph{Fermi} with such a hard spectrum over several days. The highest flux was recorded on 2014 June 15, in a 3 hr bin, at MJD 56823.5625, at a level of $F[E > 100~\mathrm{MeV}] = (17.6 \pm 1.9) \times 10^{-6}$~ph~cm$^{-2}$~s$^{-1}$. The rise time of one of the short subflares was found to be $T_r= 1200 \pm 700$~s at MJD = 56827, when the flux increased from 4 to 12 $\times 10^{-6}$~ph~cm$^{-2}$~s$^{-1}$. Several photons above 20 GeV were collected during this outburst, including one at 45 GeV on MJD 56827, constraining the $\gamma$-ray emission region to be located close to the outer boundary of the broad-line region, leading to fast flux variability., Comment: Accepted for publication in {\sc the astrophysical journal}: 2016 July 12}; 15 pages, 7 figures, 6 tables

The third catalog of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) detected by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (3LAC) is presented. It is based on the third catalog (3FGL,\cite{3FGL}) of sources detected with a test statistic greater than 25, using the first 4 years of data. The 3LAC includes 1591 AGNs located at high ($|b|>10^\circ$) Galactic latitudes (with 28 duplicate associations, thus corresponding to 1563 gamma-ray sources among 2192 sources in the 3FGL catalog), providing $71\%$ more sources with respect to the 2FGL. Fermi-LAT analyses show that the gamma-ray photon spectral indices Gamma_gamma of a large sample of blazars correlate with the vFv peak synchrotron frequency v_s according to the relation Gamma_gamma = d - k log v_s. The same function, with different constants d and k, also describes the relationship between Gamma_gamma and peak Compton frequency v_C. This behavior is derived analytically using an equipartition blazar model with a log-parabola description of the electron energy distribution (EED). In the Thomson regime, k = k_EC = 3b/4 for external Compton processes and k = k_SSC = 9b/16 for synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) processes, where b is the log-parabola width parameter of the EED. The BL Lac object Mrk 501 is fit with a synchrotron/SSC model given by the log-parabola EED, and is best fit away from equipartition. Corrections are made to the spectral-index diagrams for a low-energy power-law EED and departures from equipartition, as constrained by absolute jet power. Analytic expressions are compared with numerical values derived from self-Compton and external Compton scattered gamma-ray spectra from Ly alpha broad-line region and IR target photons. The Gamma_gamma vs. v_s behavior in the model depends strongly on b, with progressively and predictably weaker dependences on gamma-ray detection range, variability time, and isotropic gamma-ray luminosity. Implications for blazar unification and blazars as ultra-high energy cosmic-ray sources are presented. Arguments by Ghisellini et al. Flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) are bright active galactic nuclei surrounded by gas clouds within a UV-visible intense radiation field that form the so-called broad line region (BLR). These objects emit relativistic jets from a region close to the central supermassive black hole and through the BLR. The Fermi-Large Area Telescope (Fermi-LAT) is sensitive to gamma-ray photons from $\sim$30 MeV to more than 300 GeV. We have performed spectral analysis of bright FSRQs in a 5.5 year (2008-2014) data sample collected by Fermi-LAT, using the new Pass 8 event selection and instrument response function. We have been using the 0.76-m Katzman Automatic Imaging Telescope (KAIT) at Lick Observatory to optically monitor a sample of 157 blazars that are bright in gamma rays, being detected with high significance ($\ge 10\sigma$) in one year by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on the {\it Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope}. We attempt to observe each source on a 3-day cadence with KAIT, subject to weather and seasonal visibility. The gamma-ray coverage is essentially continuous. KAIT observations extend over much of the 5-year {\it Fermi} mission for several objects, and most have $>100$ optical measurements spanning the last three years. These blazars (flat-spectrum radio quasars and BL~Lac objects) exhibit a wide range of flaring behavior. Using the discrete correlation function (DCF), here we search for temporal relationships between optical and gamma-ray light curves in the 40 brightest sources in hopes of placing constraints on blazar acceleration and emission zones. We find strong optical--gamma-ray correlation in many of these sources at time delays of $\sim 1$ to $\sim 10$ days, ranging between $-40$ and +30 days. A stacked average DCF of the 40 sources verifies this correlation trend, with a peak above 99% significance indicating a characteristic time delay consistent with 0 days. These findings strongly support the widely accepted leptonic models of blazar emission. However, we also find examples of apparently uncorrelated flares (optical flares with no gamma-ray counterpart and gamma-ray flares with no optical counterpart) that challenge simple, one-zone models of blazar emission. Moreover, we find that flat-spectrum radio quasars tend to have gamma rays leading the optical, while intermediate and high synchrotron peak blazars with the most significant peaks have smaller lags/leads.

Observations performed with the Fermi-LAT telescope have revealed the presence of a spectral break in the GeV spectrum of flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) and other low- and intermediate-synchrotron peaked blazars. We propose that this feature can be explained by Compton scattering of broad-line region (BLR) photons by a non-thermal population of electrons described by a log-parabolic function. We consider in particular a scenario in which the energy densities of particles, magnetic field, and soft photons in the emitting region are close to equipartition. We show that this model can satisfactorily account for the overall spectral energy distribution of the FSRQ 3C 454.3, reproducing the GeV spectal cutoff due to Klein-Nishina effects and a curving electron distribution., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure; Accepted for publication in ApJL; see as well the companion paper arXiv:1304.6680

Blazar spectral models generally have numerous unconstrained parameters, leading to ambiguous values for physical properties like Doppler factor delta or fluid magnetic field B'. To help remedy this problem, a few modifications of the standard leptonic blazar jet scenario are considered. First, a log-parabola function for the electron distribution is used. Second, analytic expressions relating energy loss and kinematics to blazar luminosity and variability, written in terms of equipartition parameters, imply delta, B', and the principal electron Lorentz factor gamma'_pk. The external radiation field in a blazar is approximated by Ly alpha radiation from the broad line region (BLR) and ~0.1 eV infrared radiation from a dusty torus. When used to model 3C 279 SEDs from 2008 and 2009 reported by Hayashida et al. (2012), we derive delta ~ 20-30, B' ~ few G, and total (IR + BLR) external radiation field energy densities u ~ 0.01 - 0.001 erg/cm^3, implying an origin of the gamma-ray emission site in 3C 279 at the outer edges of the BLR. This is consistent with the gamma-ray emission site being located at a distance R <~ Gamma^2 c t_{var} ~ 0.1 (\Gamma/30)^2 (t_{var}/10^4 s) pc from the black hole powering 3C 279's jets, where t_{var} is the variability time scale of the radiation in the source frame, and at farther distances for narrow-jet and magnetic_reconnection models. Excess >~ 5 GeV gamma-ray emission observed with Fermi LAT from 3C 279 challenge the model, opening the possibility of hadronic origins of the emission. Some questions raised by Fermi-LAT data about blazars are summarized, along with attempts at solutions within the context of leptonic models. Recent claims that the strength B_IGMF of the intergalactic magnetic field (IGMF) is >~ 1e-15 G are based on upper limits to the expected cascade flux in the GeV band produced by blazar TeV photons absorbed by the extragalactic background light. This limit depends on an assumption that the mean blazar TeV flux remains constant on timescales >~2 (B_ IGMF/1e-18 G)^2 / (E/{10 GeV})^2 yr for an IGMF coherence length ~ 1 Mpc, where E is the measured photon energy. Restricting TeV activity of 1ES 0229+200 to ~3 -- 4 years during which the source has been observed leads to a more robust lower limit of B_IGMF >~ 1e-18 G, which can be larger by an order of magnitude if the intrinsic source flux above ~5 -- 10 TeV from 1ES 0229+200 is strong., Comment: 12 pages, 2 figs, contains revised analysis, accepted in ApJL
