Abstract

This article addresses an innovative concept to enhance the security for IoT applications in the case of Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer. This is achieved by integrating a complementary security and identification mechanism through Wireless Power Transfer link within the network of autonomous wireless nodes. This mechanism is implemented at the level of the RF rectifier used to receive energy from a dedicated RF source. A prototype of such RF rectifier has been developed, it generates in real time a backscattered waveform (uplink from the wireless node to the RF source) as function of the parameters of the incoming energy waveform (downlink from RF source) and a digital private key code, generated/available at the level of the wireless node. This uplink waveform can be monitored at the level of the RF source for security/identification purposes implementing an autonomous hardware/physical security layer that operates independently from the communication protocols.

Abstract

The peculiar structuring of liquid water stems from a fine-tuned molecular principle embodying the two different interaction demands of the water molecule: The formation of hydrogen bonds or the compensation for coordination defects. Here we shall show that the same underlying molecular mechanism is also at play in order to establish favorable interactions with other systems. Abstract

Water is a fundamental component of life, playing a critical role in regulating metabolic processes and facilitating the dissolution and transport of essential molecules. However, the presence of emerging contaminants, such as pharmaceuticals, poses significant challenges to water quality and safety. Nanomaterials-based technologies arise as a promising tool to remove those contaminants from water. Nevertheless, interfacial water plays a major role in the adsorption of chemical compounds in the nanomaterials - as it plays in biological processes such as protein folding, enzyme activity, and drug delivery. To understand this role, in this study we employ Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations to explore the adsorption dynamics of potassium diclofenac (K-DCF) on single-walled (SWCNT) and double-walled (DWCNT) carbon nanotubes, considering both dry and wet conditions. Our findings reveal that the structuring of water molecules around CNTs creates hydration layers that significantly influence the accessibility of active sites and the interaction strength between contaminants and adsorbents. Our analysis indicates higher energy barriers for adsorption in DWCNTs compared to SWCNTs, which is attributed to stronger water-surface interactions. This research highlights the importance of understanding nanoscale water behavior for optimizing the design and functionality of nanomaterials for water purification. These findings can guide the development of more efficient and selective nanomaterials, enhancing contaminant removal and ensuring safer water resources, while also contributing to a deeper understanding of fundamental biological interactions.

4. A water structure indicator suitable for generic contexts: two-liquid behavior at hydration and nanoconfinement conditions and a molecular approach to hydrophobicity and wetting

Abstract

In a recent work we have briefly introduced a new structural index for water that, unlike previous indicators, was devised specifically for generic contexts beyond bulk conditions, making it suitable for hydration and nanoconfinement settings. In this work we shall study this metric in detail, demonstrating its ability to reveal the existence of a fine-tuned interplay between local structure and energetics in liquid water. This molecular principle enables the establishment of an extended hydrogen bond network, while simultaneously allowing for the existence of network defects by compensating for uncoordinated sites. By studying different water models and different temperatures encompassing both the normal liquid and the supercooled regime, this molecular mechanism will be shown to underlie the two-state behavior of bulk water. Additionally, by studying functionalized self-assembled monolayers and diverse graphene-like surfaces, we shall show that this principle is also operative at hydration and nanoconfinement conditions, thus generalizing the validity of the two-liquids scenario of water to these contexts. This approach will allow us to define conditions for wettability, providing an accurate measure of hydrophobicity and a reliable predictor of filling and drying transitions. Hence, it might open the possibility of elucidating the active role of water in broad fields of biophysics and materials science. As a preliminary step, we shall study the hydration structure and hydrophilicity of graphene-like systems (parallel graphene sheets and carbon nanotubes) as a function of the confinement dimensionality. Abstract

Liquid water is reluctant to lose hydrogen-bond coordination. Here we reveal that it also demands contraction and reorientation of the second molecular shell to compensate for coordination defects. Such molecular principle will be shown to lie at the heart of the two-liquids scenario and to determine the behavior of water in hydration and nanoconfinement. Furthermore, it allows to define conditions for wettability (quantifying hydrophobicity and predicting drying transitions), thus opening the possibility to elucidate the active role of water in central fields of research.

Abstract

Abstract Background We assessed the prognostic value of serological humoral markers measured one month after the last dose of the primary COVID-19 vaccine course for predicting the risk of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 SARS-CoV-2 infection over the following six months in specific populations. Methods ANRS0001SCOV-POPART is a French nationwide multicenter prospective observational cohort study assessing the immune response to Covid-19 vaccines routinely administered to 11 subgroups of patients with chronic disease and a control group. Participants from the ANRS0001S COV-POPART were included if they received at least two doses of Covid-19 vaccine for the primary vaccine course, had measurements of anti-Spike, anti-receptor binding domain (RBD) IgG-specific or neutralizing antibodies one month after the end of the primary vaccine course, without being infected by SARS-CoV-2 before the measurement. SARS-CoV-2 infections defined by a positive PCR/antigenic test or seroconversion to detectable anti nucleocapsid antibodies were evaluated until the first COVID-19 booster injection. Cox proportional hazards models taking into account interval-censored data were implemented to estimate the association between each antibody level and the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Predictive performances were evaluated by the area under the receiving operating characteristic curve (AUROC). Results Two thousand five hundred seventy adults from a specific population and 1,123 from the control group were included. The cumulative probabilities of SARS-CoV-2 infections at five months after serological measurement were 6.0% 95% confidence interval: [5.0; 7.9] and 10.1% 95% confidence interval: [8.3; 11.9], respectively. Higher levels of anti-Spike IgG antibody were associated with a lower risk of SARS-CoV-2 infections in the control group, but not in the specific populations. Among the specific populations, AUROC were 74.5%, 74.9%, and 72.4% for anti-Spike IgG, anti-RBD IgG, and neutralizing antibodies, respectively. AUROC were superior in the specific populations, 82.0%, 81.2%, and 81.4% for anti-Spike IgG, anti-RBD IgG, and neutralizing antibodies, respectively. Conclusions Vaccine-induced antibody response after the primary course of Covid-19 infection only moderately discriminated between participants developing a SARS-CoV-2 infection during the Omicron wave. Abstract

IntroductionBone and joint infections (BJIs) caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria are becoming more frequent. However, data on the use of novel β-lactam/β-lactamase inhibitors, such as imipenem/cilastatin/relebactam (I-R) and meropenem/vaborbactam (MVB), to treat BJIs is lacking. Furthermore, prolonged infusions of these β-lactams should theoretically optimize pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamics target in these indications, but there are currently no reports on this type of infusions, especially in the setting of BJI.Case PresentationWe report a case of a vertebral osteomyelitis caused by carbapenem-resistant Enterobacter cloacae successfully treated with extended-infusion of I-R (1.25 g q6h over 2 h), then with continuous infusion of MVB (2 g q4h as over 4 h). Therapeutic drug monitoring confirmed that extended-infusion of I-R and continuous infusion of MVB achieved serum concentrations up to 12 mg/L of imipenem and 19 mg/L of meropenem, respectively.ConclusionThe favourable outcome of this patient treated for a vertebral osteomyelitis caused by carbapenem-resistant E. cloacae suggest that extended- and continuous infusions of I-R and MVB, are promising regimens for treatment of BJIs caused by carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales.

Abstract

Long-term tall-tower eddy-covariance (EC) measurements have been recently established in three European pilot cities as part of the ICOS-Cities project. We conducted a comparison of EC software to ensure a reliable generation of interoperable flux estimates, which is the prerequisite for avoiding methodological biases and improving the comparability of the results. We analyzed datasets covering 5 months collected from EC tall-tower installations located in urbanized areas of Munich, Zurich, and Paris. Fluxes of sensible heat, latent heat, and CO2 were calculated using three software packages (i.e., TK3, EddyPro, and eddy4R) to assess the uncertainty of flux estimations attributed to differences in implemented postprocessing schemes. A very good agreement on the mean values and standard deviations was found across all three sites, which can probably be attributed to a uniform instrumentation, data acquisition, and preprocessing. The overall comparison of final flux time series products showed a good but not yet perfect agreement among the three software packages. TK3 and EddyPro both calculated fluxes with low-frequency spectral correction, resulting in better agreement than between TK3 and the eddy4R workflow with disabled low-frequency spectral treatment. These observed flux discrepancies indicate the crucial role of treating low-frequency spectral loss in flux estimation for tall-tower EC systems.

Abstract

Like any industry, space activities generate pressures on the environment and strives towards more sustainable activities. A consensus among the European industrial stakeholders and national agencies in the Space sector is emerging on the need to address eco-design through the prism of the environmental Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology. While the use of LCA is being implemented within the sector, the current scope disregards the potential environmental impact in term of debris generated by space missions on the orbital environment. The paper highlights the relevance of applying LCA holistically during the design phase of space systems, considering potential impacts occurring in the orbital environment during the utilisation and disposal stages of a space mission. Based on the comparison of two mission designs, the aim is to consider potential emission of space debris into the LCA framework as a way of measuring the resource security for orbits and potential environmental impacts occurring in case of collision.

France was the first country to grant Sipavibart (AZD3152, an investigational long-acting monoclonal antibody) as a COVID-19 pre-exposure prophylaxis treatment in immunocompromised individuals in December 2023. The first patients to receive Sipavibart had different profiles, but they were all highly immunocompromised with frequently associated hypogammaglobulinemia and other chronic conditions. No adverse event was reported.

Pourtant présentés comme un enjeu majeur des politiques publiques environnementales et sanitaires, les micropolluants et notamment les résidus de médicaments, continuent d’être qualifiés de « contaminants émergents » plus de cinquante ans après les premiers travaux de recherches démontrant leur impact sur les milieux, voire la santé humaine. Aujourd’hui, le problème est connu mais pas entièrement, pas par tous et pas de la même manière suivant les acteurs. Plusieurs aspects du problème sont par ailleurs encore inconnus, ou en débat. Il existe une réglementation européenne sur l’eau potable et les milieux aquatiques, transcrite par la suite en droit français, mais il n’existe pas de politiques publiques territorialisées et standardisées sur l’ensemble du territoire national. Cela revient donc à dire que le problème est en cours d’identification et de cadrage et, par conséquent, que le champ des possibles est (partiellement) ouvert. Il devient donc particulièrement intéressant de s’attacher à identifier les différents espaces et acteurs qui participent à ce travail de mise en lumière, pour comprendre les rationalités à l’œuvre, les liens entre les territoires, les recherches et les politiques publiques qui y sont menées, etc. Cet article propose de s’intéresser à la mise en problème des micropolluants, en effectuant notamment un tour d’horizon des programmes de recherches qui ont travaillé sur ces substances au cours des vingt dernières années afin d’observer les liens qui existent entre recherche scientifique, réglementation et mise à l’agenda politique.

Abstract

Background: COVID-19 is primarily known as a respiratory illness; however, many patients present to hospital without respiratory symptoms. The association between non-respiratory presentations of COVID-19 and outcomes remains unclear. We investigated risk factors and clinical outcomes in patients with no respiratory symptoms (NRS) and respiratory symptoms (RS) at hospital admission. Methods: This study describes clinical features, physiological parameters, and outcomes of hospitalised COVID-19 patients, stratified by the presence or absence of respiratory symptoms at hospital admission. RS patients had one or more of: cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, runny nose or wheezing; while NRS patients did not. Results: Of 178,640 patients in the study, 86.4 % presented with RS, while 13.6 % had NRS. NRS patients were older (median age: NRS: 74 vs RS: 65) and less likely to be admitted to the ICU (NRS: 36.7 % vs RS: 37.5 %). NRS patients had a higher crude in-hospital case-fatality ratio (NRS 41.1 % vs. RS 32.0 %), but a lower risk of death after adjusting for confounders (HR 0.88 [0.83–0.93]). Conclusion: Approximately one in seven COVID-19 patients presented at hospital admission without respiratory symptoms. These patients were older, had lower ICU admission rates, and had a lower risk of in-hospital mortality after adjusting for confounders.

Abstract

The thermal stability and temperature dependent hardness of ultrafine-grained Cu-alloys CuSn5 and CuZn5 after high pressure torsion are investigated using the high temperature scanning indentation (HTSI) method. Fast indentations are carried out during thermal cycling of the samples (heating-holding-cooling) to measure hardness and strain rate sensitivity as a function of temperature and time. The microstructures after each thermal cycle are investigated to characterize the coarsening behaviour of both alloys.Results show that the thermal stability of the tested alloys can be expressed in terms of several temperature regimes: A fully stable regime, a transient regime in which growth of individual grains occurs, and finally a regime in which the microstructure is fully coarsened. The onset of grain growth is accompanied by high strain rate sensitivity on the order of 0.2–0.3. Furthermore, the obtained hardness and strain rate sensitivity values are in good agreement with continuous stiffness measurement (CSM) and strain rate jump (SRJ) experiments. This highlights the applicability of the HTSI method to the characterization of the thermomechanical properties of ultrafine-grained alloys.

Abstract

Summary: Background: Although immunomodulators have established benefit against the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in general, it is uncertain whether such agents improve outcomes without increasing the risk of secondary infections in the specific subgroup of previously immunocompromised patients. We assessed the effect of immunomodulators on outcomes of immunocompromised patients hospitalized for COVID-19. Methods: The protocol was prospectively registered with PROSPERO (CRD42022335397). MEDLINE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and references of relevant articles were searched up to 01-06-2022. Authors of potentially eligible randomized controlled trials were contacted to provide data on immunocompromised patients randomized to immunomodulators vs control (i.e., placebo or standard-of-care). Findings: Eleven randomized controlled trials involving 397 immunocompromised patients hospitalized for COVID-19 were included. Ten trials had low risk of bias. There was no difference between immunocompromised patients randomized to immunomodulators vs control regarding mortality [30/182 (16.5%) vs 41/215 (19.1%); RR 0.93, 95% CI 0.61–1.41; p = 0.74], secondary infections (RR 1.00, 95% CI 0.64–1.58; p = 0.99) and change in World Health Organization ordinal scale from baseline to day 15 (weighed mean difference 0.27, 95% CI -0.09–0.63; p = 0.15). In subgroup analyses including only patients with hematologic malignancy, only trials with low risk of bias, only trials administering IL-6 inhibitors, or only trials administering immunosuppressants, there was no difference between comparators regarding mortality. Interpretation: Immunomodulators, compared to control, were not associated with harmful or beneficial outcomes, including mortality, secondary infections, and change in ordinal scale, when administered to immunocompromised patients hospitalized for COVID-19. Abstract

In Europe, the heterogeneous features of crop systems with majority of small to medium sized agricultural holdings, and diversity of crop rotations, require high-resolution information to estimate cropland Net Ecosystem Exchange (NEE) and its two main components of Gross Ecosystem Exchange (GEE) and the Ecosystem Respiration (RECO). In this context, this paper presents an assimilation of high-resolution Sentinel-2 indices with eddy covariance measurements at selected European cropland flux sites in a new modified version of Vegetation Photosynthesis Respiration Model (VPRM). VRPM is a data-driven model simulating CO2 fluxes previously applied using satellite-derived vegetation indices from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). This study proposes a modification of the VPRM by including an explicit soil moisture stress function to the GEE and changing the equation of RECO. It also compares the model results driven by S2 indices instead of MODIS. The parameters of the VPRM model are calibrated using eddy-covariance data. All possible parameters optimization scenarios include the use of the initial version vs. the proposed modified VPRM, S2, or MODIS vegetation indices, and finally the choice of calibrating a single set of parameters against observations from all crop types, a set of parameters per crop type, or one set of parameters per site. Then, we focus the analysis on the improvement of the model with distinct parameters for different crop types vs. parameters optimized without distinction of crop types. Our main findings are: (1) the superiority of S2 vegetation indices over MODIS for cropland CO2 fluxes simulations, leading to a root mean squared error (RMSE) for NEE of less than 3.5 μmolm-2s-1 with S2 compared to 5 μmolm-2s-1 with MODIS (2) better performances of the modified VPRM version leading to a significant improvement of RECO, and (3) better performances when the parameters are optimized per crop-type instead of for all crop types lumped together, with lower RMSE and Akaike information criterion (AIC), despite a larger number of parameters. Associated with the availability of crop-type land cover maps, the use of S2 data and crop-type modified VPRM parameterization presented in this study, provide a step forward for upscaling cropland carbon fluxes at European scale.

Abstract

Abstract Background Non-target site resistance (NTSR) to herbicides is a polygenic trait that threatens the chemical control of agricultural weeds. NTSR involves differential regulation of plant secondary metabolism pathways, but its precise genetic determinisms remain fairly unclear. Full-transcriptome sequencing had previously been implemented to identify NTSR genes. However, this approach had generally been applied to a single weed population, limiting our insight into the diversity of NTSR mechanisms. Here, we sought to explore the diversity of NTSR mechanisms in common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia L.) by investigating six field populations from different French regions where NTSR to acetolactate-synthase-inhibiting herbicides had evolved. Results A de novo transcriptome assembly (51,242 contigs, 80.2% completeness) was generated as a reference to seek genes differentially expressed between sensitive and resistant plants from the six populations. Overall, 4,609 constitutively differentially expressed genes were identified, of which none were common to all populations, and only 197 were shared by several populations. Similarly, population-specific transcriptomic response was observed when investigating early herbicide response. Gene ontology enrichment analysis highlighted the involvement of stress response and regulatory pathways, before and after treatment. The expression of 121 candidate constitutive NTSR genes including CYP71, CYP72, CYP94, oxidoreductase, ABC transporters, gluco and glycosyltransferases was measured in 220 phenotyped plants. Differential expression was validated in at least one ragweed population for 28 candidate genes. We investigated whether expression patterns at some combinations of candidate genes could predict phenotype. Within populations, prediction accuracy decreased when applied to an additional, independent plant sampling. Overall, a wide variety of genes linked to NTSR was identified within and among ragweed populations, of which only a subset was captured in our experiments. Conclusion Our results highlight the complexity and the diversity of NTSR mechanisms that can evolve in a weed species in response to herbicide selective pressure. They strongly point to a non-redundant, population-specific evolution of NTSR to ALS inhibitors in ragweed. It also alerts on the potential of common ragweed for rapid adaptation to drastic environmental or human-driven selective pressures.

Abstract

Abstract The year 2022 saw record breaking temperatures in Europe during both summer and fall. Similar to the recent 2018 drought, close to 30% (3.0 million km2) of the European continent was under severe summer drought. In 2022, the drought was located in central and southeastern Europe, contrasting the Northern-centered 2018 drought. We show, using multiple sets of observations, a reduction of net biospheric carbon uptake in summer (56-62 TgC) over the drought area. Specific sites in France even showed a widespread summertime carbon release by forests, additional to wildfires. Partial compensation (32%) for the decreased carbon uptake due to drought was offered by a warm autumn with prolonged biospheric carbon uptake. The severity of this second drought event in 5 years suggests drought-induced reduced carbon uptake to no longer be exceptional, and important to factor into Europe’s developing plans for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions that rely on carbon uptake by forests.

Abstract Backgroung Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is on the rise worldwide. Tools such as dynamic regression (DR) models can correlate antimicrobial consumption (AMC) with AMR and predict future trends to help implement antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs). Main body We carried out a systematic review of the literature up to 2023/05/31, searching in PubMed, ScienceDirect and Web of Science. We screened 641 articles and finally included 28 studies using a DR model to study the correlation between AMC and AMR at a hospital scale, published in English or French. Country, bacterial species, type of sampling, antimicrobials, study duration and correlations between AMC and AMR were collected. The use of β-lactams was correlated with cephalosporin resistance, especially in Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Enterobacterales. Carbapenem consumption was correlated with carbapenem resistance, particularly in Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Acinetobacter baumannii. Fluoroquinolone use was correlated with fluoroquinolone resistance in Gram-negative bacilli and methicillin resistance in Staphylococcus aureus. Multivariate DR models highlited that AMC explained from 19 to 96% of AMR variation, with a lag time between AMC and AMR variation of 2 to 4 months. Few studies have investigated the predictive capacity of DR models, which appear to be limited. Conclusion Despite their statistical robustness, DR models are not widely used. They confirmed the important role of fluoroquinolones, cephalosporins and carbapenems in the emergence of AMR. However, further studies are needed to assess their predictive capacity and usefulness for ASPs.

Abstract

Abstract Simulating the carbon-water fluxes at more widely distributed meteorological stations based on the sparsely and unevenly distributed eddy covariance flux stations is needed to accurately understand the carbon-water cycle of terrestrial ecosystems. We established a new framework consisting of machine learning, determination coefficient (R2), Euclidean distance, and remote sensing (RS), to simulate the daily net ecosystem carbon dioxide exchange (NEE) and water flux (WF) of the Eurasian meteorological stations using a random forest model or/and RS. The daily NEE and WF datasets with RS-based information (NEE-RS and WF-RS) for 3774 and 4427 meteorological stations during 2002–2020 were produced, respectively. And the daily NEE and WF datasets without RS-based information (NEE-WRS and WF-WRS) for 4667 and 6763 meteorological stations during 1983–2018 were generated, respectively. For each meteorological station, the carbon-water fluxes meet accuracy requirements and have quasi-observational properties. These four carbon-water flux datasets have great potential to improve the assessments of the ecosystem carbon-water dynamics.

Abstract

BackgroundAs about 10% of patients with COVID-19 present sequelae, it is important to better understand the physiopathology of so-called long COVID.MethodTo this aim, we recruited 29 patients hospitalized for SARS-CoV-2 infection and, by Luminex®, quantified 19 soluble factors in their plasma and in the supernatant of their peripheral blood mononuclear cells, including inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines, Th1/Th2/Th17 cytokines, and endothelium activation markers. We also measured their T4, T8 and NK differentiation, activation, exhaustion and senescence, T cell apoptosis, and monocyte subpopulations by flow cytometry. We compared these markers between participants who developed long COVID or not one year later.ResultsNone of these markers was predictive for sequelae, except programmed T4 cell death. T4 lymphocytes from participants who later presented long COVID were more apoptotic in culture than those of sequelae-free participants at Month 12 (36.9 ± 14.7 vs. 24.2 ± 9.0%, p = 0.016).ConclusionsOur observation raises the hypothesis that T4 cell death during the acute phase of SARS-CoV-2 infection might pave the way for long COVID. Mechanistically, T4 lymphopenia might favor phenomena that could cause sequelae, including SARS-CoV-2 persistence, reactivation of other viruses, autoimmunity and immune dysregulation. In this scenario, inhibiting T cell apoptosis, for instance, by caspase inhibitors, could prevent long COVID.

Abstract

To meet the ever-growing need for performance in silicon devices, SoC providers have been increasingly relying on software-hardware cooperation. By controlling hardware resources such as power or clock management from the software, developers earn the possibility to build more flexible and power efficient applications. Despite the benefits, these hardware components are now exposed to software code and can potentially be misused as open-doors to jeopardize trusted environments, perform privilege escalation or steal cryptographic secrets. In this work, we introduce SideLine, a novel side-channel vector based on delay-line components widely implemented in high-end SoCs. After providing a detailed method on how to access and convert delay-line data into power consumption information, we demonstrate that these entities can be used to perform remote power side-channel attacks. We report experiments carried out on two SoCs from distinct vendors and we recount several core-vs-core attack scenarios in which an adversary process located in one processor core aims at eavesdropping the activity of a victim process located in another core. For each scenario, we demonstrate the adversary ability to fully recover the secret key of an OpenSSL AES running in the victim core. Even more detrimental, we show that these attacks are still practicable if the victim or the attacker program runs over an operating system.

Abstract

ABSTRACTUp to 25% of the E. coli strains isolated from the feces of healthy humans harbor the pks genomic island encoding the synthesis of colibactin, a genotoxic metabolite. Evidence is accumulating for an etiologic role of colibactin in colorectal cancer. Little is known about the conditions of expression of colibactin in the gut. The intestine is characterized by a unique oxygenation profile, with a steep gradient between the physiological hypoxic epithelial surface and the anaerobic lumen, which favors the dominance of obligate anaerobes. Here, we report that colibactin production is maximal under anoxic conditions and decreases with increased oxygen concentration. We show that the aerobic respiration control (ArcA) positively regulates colibactin production and genotoxicity of pks+ E. coli in response to oxygen availability. Thus, colibactin synthesis is inhibited by oxygen, indicating that the pks biosynthetic pathway is adapted to the anoxic intestinal lumen and to the hypoxic infected or tumor tissue.

The High-Temperature Scanning Indentation (HTSI) method enables the continuous monitoring of various mechanical properties, including Young's modulus, hardness, and creep properties, during specific thermal cycles. In this study, the HTSI method is applied to cold-rolled samples of commercially pure aluminum and oxygen-free high conductivity (OFHC) copper. The observed variations in hardness during heating are attributed to the underlying restoring mechanisms, namely static recovery and static recrystallization. Inverse analyses are performed using established metallurgical models of restoration. The results highlight the influence of the initial deformation state and heating rate on the kinetics parameters. The findings are further supported by Electron-Back Scattering Diffraction measurements. The study concludes by demonstrating the HTSI method's capability to quantify restoration parameters as a function of temperature through a limited number of well-designed HTSI experiments.

Abstract Background Despite their spread in daily practice, few data is available on clinical factors associated with peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC)-related bloodstream infections (PR-BSI). We aimed to assess the PR-BSI incidence, microbiology, and factors associated with PR-BSI with a focus on clinical symptoms. Methods We conducted a retrospective cohort study in a French university hospital. We screened all PICC insertions performed from April 1st, 2018, to April 1st, 2019, and included PICC insertions in adult patients. We assessed the PR-BSI incidence, the factors associated with PR-BSI using a Cox model, and negative and positive predictive values (NPVs and PPVs) of each clinical sign for PR-BSI. Results Of the 901 PICCs inserted in 783 patients (38,320 catheters days), 214 PICCs (24%) presented with a complication. The most prevalent complication was PR-BSI (1.9 per 1000 catheter days; 8.1% of inserted PICCs ). Enterobacterales (N = 27, 37%) and coagulase negative Staphylococci (N = 24, 33%), were the main microorganisms responsible for PR-BSI. Abstract

Abstract Using a targeted metabolomic approach we investigated the effects of low seawater pH on energy metabolism in two late copepodite stages (CIV and CV) of the keystone Arctic copepod species Calanus glacialis. Exposure to decreasing seawater pH (from 8.0 to 7.0) caused increased ATP, ADP and NAD+ and decreased AMP concentrations in stage CIV, and increased ATP and phospho-L-arginine and decreased AMP concentrations in stage CV. Metabolic pathway enrichment analysis showed enrichment of the TCA cycle and a range of amino acid metabolic pathways in both stages. Concentrations of lactate, malate, fumarate and alpha-ketoglutarate (all involved in the TCA cycle) increased in stage CIV, whereas only alpha-ketoglutarate increased in stage CV. Based on the pattern of concentration changes in glucose, pyruvate, TCA cycle metabolites, and free amino acids, we hypothesise that ocean acidification will lead to a shift in energy production from carbohydrate metabolism in the glycolysis toward amino acid metabolism in the TCA cycle and oxidative phosphorylation in stage CIV. In stage CV, concentrations of most of the analysed free fatty acids increased, suggesting in particular that ocean acidification increases the metabolism of stored wax esters in this stage. Moreover, aminoacyl-tRNA biosynthesis was enriched in both stages indicating increased enzyme production to handle low pH stress.

Abstract Immune response induced by COVID-19 vaccine booster against delta and omicron variants was assessed in 65 adults (65–84 years old) early aftesr a first booster dose. An increase in SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing antibodies was shown in individuals not previously infected without evidence of an age-related effect, with lower increase in those infected before a single dose of primary vaccination. Of note, humoral response was observed only starting from the 5th day after the boost.

Abstract

El artículo tiene como objetivo conocer cómo se están configurando los imaginarios sociales acerca del periodismo digital en Latinoamérica a partir de la revisión de tipo exploratoria, de investigaciones realizadas en ese contexto regional. Tiene, como sustento inicial, que el desarrollo del periodismo digital ha traído consecuencias para la profesión tanto en el nivel de competencias y credibilidad, como en los ámbitos organizacional y laboral; de ahí que el análisis de imaginarios de la profesión en el escenario de las redes digitales ofrezca un panorama de las realidades intersubjetivas que se vislumbran como desafío. En general, se observa una persistente distinción entre lo tradicional y lo digital como emergente, conjugado con significaciones de profesionalidad, responsabilidad, credibilidad y confianza.
