Modem operational mesoscale numerical weather prediction models have the potential to forecast cloud structure and distribution more accurately through cloud physical initialization than through simple cloud cover estimation with synoptic-scale data or through dynamic initialization. In an attempt to produce a better cloud forecast and to reduce model spin-up time, a technique is developed that converts the Air Force's Real-Time Nephanalysis (RTNEPH) into cloud species mixing ratios that are used to initialize the PSU/NCAR Fifth-Generation Mesoscale Model (MM5). The cloud analysis and the model are chosen to simulate the operational modeling environment at Air Force Weather Agency (AFWA). MM5 is used to forecast clouds evolving around a stationary front along the Texas coast of the Gulf of Mexico from 13 September 2000 through 15 September 2000. A cloud physical parameterization scheme currently in use in the Eta model provides the framework for converting RTNEPH clouds to data that can be used to initialize MM5. Modifications to this scheme make it purely diagnostic and account for the higher resolution grid to which it is applied. The technique used to initialize clouds is called the Cloud Initialization Scheme (CIS). Cloud variables analyzed by CIS are used to examine how sensitive MM5 forecast cloud distributions are to the initial distribution of clouds. Analyzed cloud is also compared to MM5 forecast clouds to determine if cloud forecasts are improved using this technique, and to determine if model spin-up is reduced. Results indicate dramatic improvement in reducing spin-up time but only slight improvement in forecast accuracy. Tornadic potential in low-topped convection is difficult to forecast and to detect on radar. Observations of tornadic low-topped supercell environments allude to low-to- moderate CAPE and at least moderate low-level lapse rates in temperature. This study examines the role of low-level vertical buoyancy distributions in influencing supercell updraft intensity and persistence, and on mid-level and low-level mesocyclone development. The emphasis is to examine wind, temperature, and moisture profiles that are conducive to the development of low-topped supercells with tornadic potential. COMMAS, a non-hydrostatic 3-dimensional numerical cloud model, was used to simulate supercell development for nine idealized environments having a range of wind shears and total CAPE predictive of supercell type storms, and all having moderate vertical lapse rates in temperature. Supercell updraft forcing characteristics and low-level mesocyclone development in the models were similar for environments with adequate shear and buoyancy distributions in the low levels regardless of the environment's total CAPE. Model results suggest the vertical distribution of buoyancy over the sheared depth of the environment is a better indicator of an environment's potential to produce tornadic supercells than total CAPE. The shaped spherical body of the lens is provided by press-forming and fusing together a quantity of highly-pourous ceramic granules each being the same in composition and each having essentially the same pore size.

Results are presented on a 9-month evaluation program on resistance to penetration of a highly dilatant fluid by 30-caliber ball and AP bullets. Military ammunition of both types was fired point blank into test cells containing the fluid packaged according to these general concepts: (1) flexible, (2) semi-flexible, (3) conformable rigid, and (4) rigid. The principal objective was to find a fully-flexible system that could use the unusual self-healing capability of the material. Degrees of effectiveness of the various packaging systems for confining the fluid are described in this report. Packaging materials that were tested included commercial fiberglass, high tensile strength plastic, and aluminum honeycomb materials. Cell reinforcements studied included reticulated foam and various grades of screen wire mesh. In an effort to improve shear and short-range tensile strengths of the dilatant fluid, asbestos, metal, and ceramic fiber additives were evaluated.
