1. Catalytic carbonylation of acrylic acid to succinic anhydride

Abstract

Alternative sources for polymeric materials have been sought in the past few years to reduce our dependence on fossil feedstock. We report the catalytic carbonylation of acrylic acid, a platform chemical that can be bio-sourced, as a new pathway toward the formation of a useful monomer to polyesters, namely succinic anhydride. The novel system reported herein tackles the difficult carbonylation of unsaturated carboxylic acids through the utilization of an Earth-abundant metal catalyst, [Co2(CO)8], in presence of a bidentate ligand, 1,2-bis(dicyclohexylphosphino)ethane (dcpe), and H2. We investigated the influence of the reaction conditions through the variations of metal, ligand, temperature, pressure, and gas composition variations. The carbonylative ring-closure of acrylic acid was successfully obtained in high yield and selectivity toward the formation of succinic anhydride using mild conditions (90 °C and 16 bar of CO/H2 95:5).

Abstract

International audience; Carbonylation reactions that generate high-value chemical feedstocks are integral to the formation of many industrially significant compounds. However, these processes require the use of CO, which is invariably derived from fossil-fuelreforming reactions. CO may also be generated through the electroreduction of CO2, but the coupling of these two processes is yet to be considered. Merging electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to CO with thermocatalytic use of CO would expand the range of the chemicals produced from CO2. This work describes for the first time the development of a system coupling a high-pressure CO2 electrolytic cell containing a bimetallic ZnAg catalyst at the cathode for production of CO with a reactor with a faradaic efficiency of >90 % where high pressure CO is used for carbonylating propylene oxide into β-butyrolactone by thermal catalysis, the latter step having a reaction yield above 80%. While the production of monomers and polymers from CO2 is currently limited to organic carbonates, this strategy opens up the access to lactones from CO2, for the formation of polyesters.

Abstract

International audience; The carbene character of carbon monoxide offers the possibility to utilize this C$_1$-building block for the carbonylation of a variety of organic substrates by insertion of CO into $\sigma$-bonds. Although presenting an ideal atom economy this route requires the design and utilization of reactive catalysts able to activate strong CO , C-N, and C-H bonds in the presence of carbon monoxide. This perspective article adresses, in the context of sustainable chemistry, the challenges and strategies facing the catalytic carbonylation of $\sigma$-bonds and presents the key advances in the field over the last decades, for the carbonylation polar and apolar substrates, such as the conversion of alcohols to formates and esters and the carbonylation of amines to amides.
