1. Asymmetric fission around lead: The case of Po198

Abstract: Asymmetric low-energy fission of neutron-deficient nuclei around lead is addressed with the measurement of fragment mass and total kinetic energy properties for the fissioning system $^{198}\mathrm{Po}$ produced in heavy-ion fusion. Interpretation of the measurement for such a transitional nucleus at finite excitation energy is challenging. The presence of asymmetric partitions is suggested by the observed weak dependence of the total kinetic energy on mass and by the nonmonotonic evolution of the fragment-mass distribution width with excitation energy. The interpretation is supported by microscopic model calculations as well as by the results of an advanced semiempirical code. Combined with previous experiments in the region, the present measurement contributes to establish the evolution of the fragment-mass distribution as a function of the fissioning system. The connection between the ``new'' and the ``old'' islands of asymmetric fission is discussed.

Abstract: Neutron angular distributions in spontaneous fission of 252Cf are investigated. The CORA experiment, performed at IPHC Strasbourg, aims at elucidating neutron emission mechanisms in the fission process. The experimental setup is composed of the angle-sensitive twin ionisation chamber CODIS for the detection of fission fragments and the DEMON neutron detector assembly. The development of a simulation toolkit based on GEANT4 and MENATE_R is described, adapted as a strategy to investigate the influence of experimental conditions on the observed properties of neutrons emitted. Besides the kinematic neutron anisotropy in the laboratory system due to neutron evaporation from moving fragments, two additional effects are discussed which may have an influence on the angular distributions of neutrons: scission neutrons and dynamic neutron emission anisotropy in the CM system of fragments due to the spin carried by fragments. A new analysis method is presented to disentangle the dynamic anisotropy from the other effects in an independent way. For the dynamic anisotropy only an upper limit could be found. Results for the angular correlation $ (\mathrm{n},\mathrm{n})$ between two evaporated neutrons and the correlation $ (\mathrm{n},\mathrm{LF})$ between an evaporated neutron and the Light Fragment direction of flight are reported.

Abstract: An experiment has been performed at IPHC Strasbourg, aimed at the detailed investigation of angular correlations in the neutron emission from spontaneous fission of 252Cf. Fission fragments were measured by the angle-sensitive double ionization chamber CODIS while neutrons were detected by a set of 60 DEMON scintillator counters. The main aim of the experiment is the observation of the correlation between the fragment spins and neutron emission anisotropy. Preliminary results, based on the Monte-Carlo simulations, as well as the preliminary analysis of the experimental data are shown.

The CORA experiment associating the CODIS twin ionisation chamber and the neutron multi-detector DEMON aimed to solve an long-standing problem in fission: the possible emission of scission neutrons and/or the presence of a dynamical anisotropy in the neutron evaporation by the moving fission fragments. Abstract: International audience; The kinetic energy of a neutron is determined experimentally by measuring its time-of-flight and flight distance from the source to the detector. However, this determination is vitiated by errors since the exact location of the interaction of the neutron within the detector is unknown. Moreover, more than one interaction may be necessary for the deposited energy to reach the detector threshold. We compare the different existing energy determination methods and introduce the method which gives the minimum-variance unbiased estimator of the neutron energy. The method is based of the inversion of the detector response function, for which we propose a universal algorithm. It is shown that the precision of the new method does not deteriorate with the length of the detector, which opens the possibility of conceiving detectors with a higher efficiency.

Abstract: Independent fission fragment yields have been obtained for the six fragment pairs ( Z L/Z H = 44/46 , 42/48, 40/50, 38/52, 36/54 and 34/56) in 208Pb(18O, f ) at the beam energy E = 85 MeV. γ -ray spectroscopy technique was applied to analyze the experimental data. With use of these data the mass distribution of fission fragments was restored. Data on average fragment spin distribution and total neutron multiplicity are presented. The agreement of the obtained results with other experimental data proves the validity of the applied method to solve this kind of problems.

The 31 micro second isomer reported more than 30 years ago is found to decay to the ground state of 253No by the emission of a 167 keV M2 transition. The spin and parity of this low-lying isomeric state are established to be 5/2+. The presence of another longer-lived isomeric state is also discussed.

Abstract: The B(E1;1/2{sup +}{yields} 1/2{sup -}) strength for {sup 11}Be has been extracted from intermediate energy Coulomb excitation measurements, over a range of beam energies using a new reaction model, the extended continuum discretized coupled channels (XCDCC) method. In addition, a measurement of the excitation cross section for {sup 11}Be+{sup 208}Pb at 38.6 MeV/nucleon is reported. The B(E1) strength of 0.105(12) e{sup 2}fm{sup 2} derived from this measurement is consistent with those made previously at 60 and 64 MeV/nucleon, in contrast to an anomalously low result obtained at 43 MeV/nucleon. By coupling a multi-configuration description of the projectile structure with realistic reaction theory, the XCDCC model provides for the first time a fully quantum mechanical description of Coulomb excitation. The XCDCC calculations reveal that the excitation process involves significant contributions from nuclear, continuum, and higher-order effects. An analysis of the present and two earlier intermediate energy measurements yields a combined B(E1) strength of 0.105(7) e{sup 2}fm{sup 2}. This value is in good agreement with the value deduced independently from the lifetime of the 1/2{sup -} state in {sup 11}Be, and has a comparable precision.

Abstract: We analyzed the experimental data of the pre-scission neutron multiplicity in connection with fission fragments in the reaction $^{58}$Ni+$^{208}$Pb at the incident energy corresponding to the excitation energy of compound nucleus $E^{*}$=185.9 MeV, which was performed by D\'{e}MoN group. The relation between the pre-scission neutron multiplicity and each reaction process having different reaction time is investigated. In order to study the fusion-fission process accompanied by neutron emission, the fluctuation-dissipation model combined with a statistical model is employed. Abstract: We discuss thc fusion-fission process in superheavy mass region. By analyzing the mass distribution of fission fragments, we can distinguish between fusion-fission process and quasi-fission process. We investigate these two processes using the fluctuation-dissipation model. In the dynamical calculation, we employ the three-dimensional Langevin equation. We find 90 ∼ 99% of mass symmetric fission events come from the quasi-fission process in the superheavy mass region. In order to classify the fusion-fission process more precisely. we analyze the pre-scission neutron multiplicity. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: Nuclear dissipation in capture reactions is investigated using backtracing, a new analysis protocol. Combining analysis procedure with dynamical models, the difficult and long-standing problem of competition and mixing between quasifission and fusion-fission is solved for the first time. The nature of the relevant dissipation is determined as one-body dissipation. At low excitation energy where shell effects are strongly effective, the shape of the mass distribution could be a powerful check of the nature and the magnitude of the dissipation.

Abstract: We have studied mass-energy distributions (MED) of fission fragments using two projectile-target combinations, 12C + 204Pb and 48Ca + 168Er, leading to the same compound nucleus 216Ra at the excitation energy E*∼40 MeV. It has been found that the contribution of the asymmetric mode in the case of the former reaction is 1.5%, and it is 30% in the case of the latter one. We connect such a sharp increase in the yield of asymmetric products in the 48Ca + 168Er reaction with the quasifission process, the MED of which have a clearly expressed shell structure. The characteristics of the fission fragment MED are of such a kind that they can be interpreted by analogy with the low-energy fission of heavy nuclei as a manifestation of an independent mode of nuclear decay which competes with the classical fusion-fission process.

Abstract: Background: In heavy-ion-induced reactions the mechanism leading to the formation of the compound nucleus and the role of quasifission is still not clear.Purpose: Investigation of the quasifission process of superheavy composite systems with $Z=110\text{\ensuremath{-}}116$ and comparison with properties of fusion-fission and quasifission of lighter composite systems.Method: Mass and energy distributions of fissionlike fragments formed in the reactions $^{48}\mathrm{Ca}+^{232}\mathrm{Th}$, ${}^{238}\mathrm{U}$, ${}^{244}\mathrm{Pu}$, and ${}^{248}\mathrm{Cm}$ at energies near the Coulomb barrier have been measured using the double-arm time-of-flight spectrometer CORSET at the U-400 cyclotron of the FLNR JINR.Results: The most probable fragment masses as well as total kinetic energies and their dispersions in dependence on the interaction energies and ion-target combinations have been studied for asymmetric and symmetric fragments formed in the reactions. The capture cross sections were obtained for the reactions $^{48}\mathrm{Ca}+^{244}\mathrm{Pu}$ and ${}^{248}\mathrm{Cm}$. The lower limits for fission barriers of ${}^{283\ensuremath{-}286}\mathrm{Cn}$, ${}^{289\ensuremath{-}292}\mathrm{Fl}$, and ${}^{293\ensuremath{-}296}\mathrm{Lv}$ compound nuclei were estimated.Conclusions: Analysis of the properties of symmetric fragments has shown that a significant part of these fragments may be attributed to fusion-fission process for the reactions ${}^{48}\mathrm{Ca}{+}^{238}\mathrm{U}$, ${}^{244}\mathrm{Pu}$, and ${}^{248}\mathrm{Cm}$.

Abstract: The low-lying level structure of the unbound neutron-rich nucleus $^{13}$Be has been investigated via breakup on a carbon target of secondary beams of $^{14,15}$B at 35 MeV/nucleon. The coincident detection of the beam velocity $^{12}$Be fragments and neutrons permitted the invariant mass of the $^{12}$Be+$n$ and $^{12}$Be+$n$+$n$ systems to be reconstructed. In the case of the breakup of $^{15}$B, a very narrow structure at threshold was observed in the $^{12}$Be+$n$ channel. Contrary to earlier stable beam fragmentation studies which identified this as a strongly interacting $s$-wave virtual state in $^{13}$Be, analysis here of the $^{12}$Be+$n$+$n$ events demonstrated that this was an artifact resulting from the sequential-decay of the $^{14}$Be(2$^+$) state. Single-proton removal from $^{14}$B was found to populate a broad low-lying structure some 0.70 MeV above the neutron-decay threshold in addition to a less prominent feature at around 2.4 MeV. Based on the selectivity of the reaction and a comparison with (0-3)$\hbar\omega$ shell-model calculations, the low-lying structure is concluded to most probably arise from closely spaced J$^\pi$=1/2$^+$ and 5/2$^+$ resonances (E$_r$=0.40$\pm$0.03 and 0.85$^{+0.15}_{-0.11}$ MeV), whilst the broad higher-lying feature is a second 5/2$^+$ level (E$_r$=2.35$\pm$0.14 MeV). Taken in conjunction with earlier studies, it would appear that the lowest 1/2$^+$ and 1/2$^-$ levels lie relatively close together below 1 MeV., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables. Abstract: Experiments performed at Lab. Nat. SATURNE on neutron produced by spallation from proton beams in the range 0.8 - 1.6 GeV are presented. Experimental data compared with codes show a significant improvement of the recent intra-nuclear cascade (J. Cugnon). This is also true in the same way for the neutron production from thick targets. However the model underestimates the energetic neutrons produced in the backward direction and other quantities as residual nuclei cross sections are not accurately predicted.

Abstract: The neutron multidetector DeMoN has been used to investigate the symmetric splitting dynamics in the reactions 58,64 Ni + 208 Pb with excitation energies ranging from 65 to 186 MeV for the composite system. An analysis based on the new backtracing technique has been applied on the neutron data to determine the two-dimensional correlations between the parent composite system initial thermal energy (ECNth) and the total neutron multiplicity (νtot), and between pre- and post-scission neutron multiplicities (νpre and νpost, respectively). The νpre distribution shape indicates the possible coexistence of fast-fission and fusion-fission for the system 58 Ni + 208 Pb (Ebeam = 8.86 A MeV). The analysis of the neutron multiplicities in the framework of the combined dynamical statistical model (CDSM) gives a reduced friction coefficient β = 23 ± 1225 × 1021 s−1, above the one-body dissipation limit. The corresponding fission time is τf = 40 ± 2046 × 10−21s.

Abstract: The talk presents the results of an investigation of the main characteristics (mass and energy distributions of fission fragments and multiplicity of neutrons) of the fission of the nuclei of 220 Ra, 226 Th, 256 No, 270 Sg, 286 112 produced in reactions with ions of 18 O, 22 Ne and 48 Ca at energies close to and essentially below the Coulomb barrier. The data obtained show that the form of the mass and energy distributions of the fission fragments of 226 Th and 270 Sg is accounted for by the multimodal nature of the fission. In addition, for 226 Th, a new phenomenon was established there is a significant difference between the numbers of prescission neutrons for symmetric and asymmetric fission modes. It was found that, for the low-energy fission of the nucleus of 286 112, the mass distribution of the fragments is of a clear-cut asymmetric form, contrary to what is observed for the spotaneous fission of the nuclei with Z = 100–104 and for the induced fission of 270 Sg.

Abstract: The breakup of 12Be into 6He+6He and 4He+8He has been studied using a 378 MeV 12Be beam inelastically excited by 12C and (CH2)n targets. The measurements indicate that breakup occurs from rotational states in the 10 to 25 MeV excitation energy interval, with spins in the range of 4ħ to 8ħ. The inferred moment of inertia is consistent with the cluster decay of an exotic molecular structure in 12Be, which may be associated with an α-4n-α cluster configuration.

Abstract: Elastic and inelastic scattering as well as transfer transitions involving a valence proton in thesd- andfp- shell orbits are studied in the interaction of37Cl +36S at ECM=50 MeV. Experimental angular distributions of single particle states of37Cl (elastic and inelastic transfer) are presented with a CRC analysis. In the CRC calculations the effects of inelastic and transfer couplings are studied using known spectroscopic information. In the CRC analysis six single particle bound states and the collective 2+ excitation of36S are included in the coupling scheme. Higher order coupling effects are found to be important. A distinct effect, the mixing of single particle states (of different parity) due to direct and transfer interactions is observed to produce an enhancement of the transfer cross section to the low lying states. This feature is due to a change of the asymptotically defined single nucleon orbits via polarization in the field of the other nucleus, an effect which is analogous to hybridization, known from atomic physics.

Abstract: Mass and energy distributions of binary reaction products obtained in the reactions {sup 22}Ne+{sup 249}Cf,{sup 26}Mg+{sup 248}Cm, {sup 36}S+{sup 238}U, and {sup 58}Fe+{sup 208}Pb have been measured. All reactions lead to Hs isotopes. At energies below the Coulomb barrier the bimodal fission of Hs{sup *}, formed in the reaction {sup 26}Mg+{sup 248}Cm, is observed. In the reaction {sup 36}S+{sup 238}U, leading to the formation of a similar compound nucleus, the main part of the symmetric fragments arises from the quasifission process. At energies above the Coulomb barrier fusion-fission is the main process leading to the formation of symmetric fragments for both reactions with Mg and S ions. In the case of the {sup 58}Fe+{sup 208}Pb reaction the quasifission process dominates at all measured energies.

Abstract: Expérience GANIL; The ion dose deposition in tissues is characterized by a favorable depth dose profile (i.e. Bragg peak) and a small lateral spread. In order to keep these benefits of ions in cancer treatments, a very high accuracy is required on the dose deposition (±3%). For given target stoechiometry and geometry, the largest uncertainty on the physical dose deposition is due to the ion nuclear fragmentation. We have performed an experiment at GANIL with a 95MeV/u 12C beam on thick tissue equivalent PMMA targets (thicknesses: 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25mm). The main goals of this experiment are to provide experimental fragmentation data for benchmarking the physical models used for treatment planning. Production rates, energy and angular distributions of charged fragments have been measured. The purpose of this paper is to present the results of this experiment.

Abstract: A new detector system dedicated for very/super heavy elements (VHE/SHE) detection that decay by spontaneous fission is presented. Such a decay mode of nuclei can be found e.g. in the region of Z ≈100 (Fermium). Future experiments realized in the frame of French-Polish collaboration at the cyclotrons in GANIL and in the Heavy Ion Laboratory (HIL), University of Warsaw, is described. The results of test measurements made in the HIL for reactions 20 Ne (8 A . MeV )+120 Sn , 179 Au are presented.

Abstract: XYZt is a multidetector specially designed to measure intermediate-mass fragments emitted at small angles (2° E A > 20 MeV/u . It consists of 12 independent modules which can be placed in any geometry. Each module is composed of an avalanche counter measuring time and position, and an ionisation chamber measuring an energy-loss. XYZt allows coincidence measurements in an angular range extending below the grazing angle. In experiments performed at GANIL, it detects Z > 4 fragments, separates the charges up to Z = 15, has a time resolution better than 1 ns and is transparent to light particles.

Abstract: An isomeric state in {sup 255}Lr with a half-life of t{sub 1/2} = 1.4(1) ms and E{sub x}>720-keV has been observed for the first time using the GABRIELA setup at the focal plane of the VASSILISSA separator. Based on its K-forbiddeness, the configuration of the state is most probably formed by coupling the valence proton to a two quasiparticle neutron excitation. Possible three quasiparticle configurations are discussed.

Abstract: Mass, energy and folding angle distributions of the fission fragments as well as multiplicities of neutron and gamma‐quanta emissions accompanying the fission process were measured for fission of 226Th, 227Pa and 234Pu compound nuclei produced in reactions with 18O and 26Mg projectiles over a wide energy range. Data were analyzed with respect to the presence of fission modes. Asymmetric fission was observed even at very high initial excitation for all the measured systems. The so‐called fission mode S1 (caused by the proton shell Z∼50 and neutron shell N∼82 in heavy fragment) was found to be dominant in asymmetric fission of 234Pu. Reactions with not full linear momentum transfer were observed in the folding spectra for all the measured systems.

Abstract: The interest in the study of the fission process of superheavy nuclei mainly deals with the opportunity to obtain information about the cross-section of the compound nucleus (CN) formation at excitation energies E*\approx 15–30 MeV. It allows one to estimate the survival probability of the superheavy composite system after evaporation of 1–3 neutrons, i.e. in "cold" or "warm" fusion reactions. However, in order to solve this problem deeper understanding of the coalescence processes between colliding nuclei, the competition between fusion-fission and quasi-fission processes is needed. The characteristics of both processes, their manifestation in the experimental observables and the relative contribution to the capture cross-section in dependence on the excitation energies, reaction entrance channel etc were investigated for a wide range of target-projectile combinations. Results of the experiments devoted to the study of the fusion-fission and quasi-fission processes in the reactions of the formation of the superheavy nuclei with Z = 102–122 are presented. The heavy ions 26Mg, 48Ca, 50Ti, 58Fe and 64Ni were used as projectiles. The choice of the reactions with 48Ca and actinide-targets was inspired by the experiments on the production of the isotopes 283112, 289114 and 283116 in Dubna using the same reactions. The 50Ti, 58Fe and 64Ni projectiles were chosen since the corresponding projectile-target combinations lead to the synthesis of even heavier elements. The experiments were carried out at the U-400 accelerator of the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions (JINR, Russia) and the XTU Tandem accelerator of the National Laboratory of Legnaro (LNL, Italy) using the time-of-flight spectrometer of fission fragments CORSET. The role of the shell effects, the influence of the entrance channel asymmetry and the deformations of colliding nuclei on the mechanism of the fusion-fission and the competitive process of quasi-fission are discussed. The recent results on synthesis of superheavy nuclei and the perspectives of the "hot" fusion reaction for the production of superheavy nuclei are considered.

Abstract: Measurements of the breakup and the neutron removal reactions of $^{16}\mathrm{C}$ have been made at 46 MeV∕A and the decay cross sections measured. A correlation between the cluster breakup channels and the reaction $\mathrm{Q}$ value suggests that the reaction mechanism is strongly linked to quasielastic processes. No enhancement of the two-body cluster breakup cross section is seen for $^{16}\mathrm{C}$. This result would indicate that $^{16}\mathrm{C}$ does not have a well developed cluster structure in the ground state, in agreement with recent calculations.

We investigate the process using the fluctuation-dissipation model and employ the three-dimensional Langevin equation. We find a lot of mass symmetric fission events come from the quasi-fission process in the superheavy mass region. In order to classify the fusion-fission paths and compare with the experimental data directly, we analyze the pre-scission neutron emission in the correlation with the fission fragments. The neutron multiplicity depends on the travelling time of the trajectory. It is useful to investigate the fusion-fission process.

Abstract: The process of fusion-fission of heavy and superheavy nuclei (SHE) with Z = 82-122 formed in the reactions with ^48Ca and ^58Fe ions at energies near and below the Coulomb barrier has been studied. The experiments were carried out at the ^400U accelerator of the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions (JINR) and at the XTU Tandem accelerator of the National Laboratory of Legnaro, (LNL) using the time-of-flight spectrometer of fission fragments CORSET and the neutron multi-detector DEMON. As a result of the experiments, mass and energy distributions (MED) of fission fragments, fission, quasi-fission and evaporation residues cross sections, multiplicities of neutrons and gamma quanta and their dependence on the mechanism of formation and decay of compound systems have been studied.

Abstract: The fusion‐fission process for the synthesis of superheavy elements is discussed on the basis of the fluctuation‐dissipation model. Recently the experiments at Dubna on fission of superheavy nuclei were carried out, and the mass and total kinetic energy distributions of fission fragments were measured. Abstract: Nuclear dissipation in capture reactions is investigated using backtracing. Combining the analysis procedure with dynamical models, the difficult and long-standing problem of competition and mixing of quasi-fission and fusion-fission is solved for the first time. At low excitation energy a new protocol able to handle low statistics data gives access to the prescission neutron multiplicity in two different systems 48 Ca +208 Pb, Pu . The results are in agreement with a domination of fusion-fission in the case of 256 No and an equal mixing of quasi-fission and fusion-fission in the case of Z=114. The nature of the relevant dissipation is determined as one-body dissipation.

Abstract: We have studied the mass and energy distributions of fission fragments from the two reactions ${}^{12}\mathrm{C}{+}^{204}\mathrm{Pb}$ and ${}^{48}\mathrm{Ca}{+}^{168}\mathrm{Er}$ that lead to the same compound nucleus ${}^{216}{\mathrm{Ra}}^{*}.$ Despite the fact that the excitation energy was around 40 MeV in both cases, the contribution from asymmetric fission in the first reaction is only around 1.5% but is about 30% in the second. This marked increase in the yield of asymmetric products is connected to the quasifission process, in which important shell effects become evident. The mass-energy distributions are interpreted in terms of an independent decay mode competing with the normal fusion-fission process and possibly leading to a significant suppression of the fusion cross section itself.

Abstract: Near-barrier excitation functions have been measured for evaporation-residue production and fission in the 12C + 204,206,208Pb and 48Ca + 168,170Er systems that lead to the compound nuclei 216,218,220Ra*. A Pronounced suppression of evaporation-residue production is observed for the more symmetric combinations, 48Ca + 168,170Er. We relate this to the significant quasifission components already observed for these systems.

Abstract: Experimental neutron angular distributions are investigated in the spontaneous fission process of 252Cf. The CORA experiment, presented in this paper, has the aim to study neutron angular correlations in order to elucidate the neutron emission mechanisms in the fission process. The experimental setup is composed by the CODIS fission chamber and the DEMON neutron multidetector. The development of a simulation toolkit based on GEANT4 and ROOT adopted as strategy to investigate the emission of the neutrons is described. Preliminary results on the sources of the anisotropy, scission neutron emission and/or dynamical anisotropy, are shown.

Abstract: Spallation neutron production in proton induced reactions on Al, Fe, Zr, W, Pb and Th targets at 1.2 GeV and on Fe and Pb at 0.8, and 1.6 GeV measured at the SATURNE accelerator in Saclay is reported. The experimental double-differential cross-sections are compared with calculations performed with different intra-nuclear cascade models implemented in high energy transport codes. The broad angular coverage also allowed the determination of average neutron multiplicities above 2 MeV. Abstract: Recently, a large number of applications involving high-energy (> 20 MeV) neutrons have become important. Examples are development of spallation sources, transmutation of nuclear waste, fast-neutron cancer therapy, as well as dose effects for airflight personnel and electronics failures due to cosmic-ray neutrons.Elastic neutron scattering plays a key role for the understanding of all these areas. The most important reason is that it allows a determination of the optical potential, which plays a decisive role in every microscopic calculation including neutrons in either the entrance or exit channel. Abstract: The breakup of 10,12Be into He clusters has been studied using the p,12C(12Be,6He,6He) and 12C(12Be,4He,6He) inelastic scattering and two neutron transfer reactions with a 378 MeV 12Be beam incident on 12C and (CH2)n targets. Evidence has been found for three new states in 10Be at excitation energies of 13.2, 14.8, and 16.1 MeV, which may be associated with a 4He+6He cluster structure. The evidence for He cluster states in 12Be in the excitation energy range 12 to 25 MeV is also discussed.

Abstract: Results of fission fragment mass-energy distributions of the compound ${}^{226}\mathrm{Th}$ nucleus formed in the sub-barrier fusion reaction ${}^{18}\mathrm{O}{+}^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$ at an energy of ${}^{18}\mathrm{O}$ ions ${E}_{\mathrm{lab}}=78$ MeV are reported. The reaction has been studied twice using two different accelerators, and both sets of experimental data agree quite well. Performed analysis of the experimental data with the use of a new multicomponent method has shown that alongside the well-known modes, i.e., the symmetric (S) and two asymmetric modes standard-one and standard-two, a high-energy mode standard-three has manifested itself. The last named mode appears due to the influence of the close-to-sphere neutron shell with $N\ensuremath{\approx}50$ in the light fission fragment group. Theoretical calculations of the prescission shapes of the fissioning nuclei ${}^{224,226}\mathrm{Th}$ confirm this conclusion.

Abstract: The technique of intensity interferometry is proposed as a probe of the spatial configuration of two-Neutron haloes. After exploring the sensitivity of interferometry to the n-N configuration, it is demonstrated that the application of the standard method for constructing the correlation function is not valid for halo neutrons. A new iterative method is presented and applied to measurements of the dissociation of 6He, 11Li and 14Be. The correlation functions for these systems have thus been extracted for the first time and the corresponding root-Mean-Square n-n separations estimated. The results are in agreement with the predictions of available three-Body models. (C) 2000 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.
