Understanding geometric and biophysical characteristics is essential for determining grapevine vigor and improving input management and automation in viticulture. This study compares point cloud data obtained from a Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS) and various UAV sensors including multispectral, panchromatic, Thermal Infrared (TIR), RGB, and LiDAR data, to estimate geometric parameters of grapevines. Descriptive statistics, linear correlations, significance using the F-test of overall significance, and box plots were used for analysis. The results indicate that 3D point clouds from these sensors can accurately estimate maximum grapevine height, projected area, and volume, though with varying degrees of accuracy. The TLS data showed the highest correlation with grapevine height ( r = 0.95, p < 0.001; R 2 = 0.90; RMSE = 0.027 m), while point cloud data from panchromatic, RGB, and multispectral sensors also performed well, closely matching TLS and measured values ( r > 0.83, p < 0.001; R 2 > 0.70; RMSE < 0.084 m). In contrast, TIR point cloud data performed poorly in estimating grapevine height ( r = 0.76, p < 0.001; R 2 = 0.58; RMSE = 0.147 m) and projected area ( r = 0.82, p < 0.001; R 2 = 0.66; RMSE = 0.165 m). The greater variability observed in projected area and volume from UAV sensors is related to the low point density associated with spatial resolution. These findings are valuable for both researchers and winegrowers, as they support the optimization of TLS and UAV sensors for precision viticulture, providing a basis for further research and helping farmers select appropriate technologies for crop monitoring.

Today resilience paradigm is shared by both academic and political debates, and it is gradually being implemented into plans, programmes, and project's initiatives. In this context, wine regions, particularly those designated as UNESCO sites, show their robustness and vulnerabilities as Socio-Ecological Systems. The climate change impact is increasing the exposure of their aesthetic, cultural, economic, natural values to potential losses and therefore an effective response is required To build resilient strategies, Decision Makers are increasingly considering multidimensional models in planning and assessment processes. This paper continues a research work that develops an integrated evaluation framework constituted by Multicriteria Decision Analysis to calculate a Territorial Resilience Index, a dynamical model to predict future ecological scenarios and scenario building to define a resilient strategy for the Douro territory (Portugal). This paper focuses on scenario building which uses specific tools such as Social Network Analysis to identify and investigate the relationships between real actors and stakeholders, Wilson matrix to assess the degree of uncertainty and relevance of the strategies identified by a panel of specialists, and consistency matrix to evaluate the strategies consistency in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and UNESCO requirements. Johnsongrass [ Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers.] is a non-native, invasive species that causes substantial losses in row crops and hay fields, which could be minimized by using Johnsongrass as a conserved forage. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the yield and quality of Johnsongrass ensiled at four maturities: harvested every 3 weeks (3WK), boot stage (BOOT), flower stage (FLOWER), and dough (DOUGH) stages. In experiment 1, yield, botanical composition, nutritive value, and fermentation characteristics of Johnsongrass were measured. In experiment 2, Johnsongrass silage was incubated for 48 h for assessment of gas production, pH, in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD), and volatile fatty acids. The experimental area consisted of 16 plots (2.74 m × 4.57 m) divided into four blocks, and treatment was randomly assigned to plot within block. Each year, silage was prepared for each plot from the two cutting closest to July 1. After 10 weeks, the silos were opened, and silage samples were frozen for further analysis. Data from both experiments were tested for the effects of maturity stage and harvest timing (first and second harvest). The results from experiment 1 showed an increase ( P < 0.0001) in dry matter yield from 3WK stage to DOUGH. Johnsongrass, as a proportion of the total botanical composition, declined at the end of the growing season for 3WK but increased in FLOWER ( P = 0.0010). In the first harvest, 3WK and BOOT stage silages had the greatest concentrations of crude protein and total digestible nutrients and lowest of fiber (neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber; P < 0.0001). In the second harvest, differences in nutrient content were significant only for 3WK silages, which showed the best nutritive value ( P < 0.0001). In experiment 2, IVDMD of silage followed the same trends described for nutritive value from experiment 1. Overall, these results demonstrate that Johnsongrass can be successfully ensiled, but to optimize forage nutritive value and quantity, Johnsongrass should be ensiled before it reaches the flower stage., (Published by Oxford University Press for the American Society of Animal Science 2022.)

This paper aims to assess the territorial resilience of a socio-ecological system through an innovative integrated evaluation framework to aid the decision-making process in the planning of transformation scenarios. This framework employs a set of resilience indicators through a Multicriteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) coupled with a Lotka-Volterra mathematical model of cooperative type. The set of indicators aims to calculate a composite index of Territorial Resilience (TRI), whereas the mathematical model is an extension of an existing model, aimed to predict possible long-time scenarios. The proposed operational framework for rural and vineyard landscapes aims to bridge the existing gap between territorial resilience theory and practice, with an innovative Decision Support System able to assist Decision Makers and territory planners in the planning and management of resilient territorial systems. This integrated evaluation framework is applied to a famous wine region in Portugal, the Douro Valley, where Port-wine grows. The objective was to evaluate the effects of injectable trace minerals (ITM) concurrent with modified-live virus (MLV) vaccination on protection from bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) infection in dairy calves. In a previous study (Palomares et al., 2016), thirty dairy calves received two doses of a MLV vaccine subcutaneously (SC), concurrently with ITM (n = 15) or saline (n = 15), SC. Five months later, 20 of these calves received ITM (G1, n = 10) or saline (G2, n = 10) according to their previous groups and were challenged intranasally with BVDV2. Five unvaccinated calves were also challenged with BVDV2 (G3). Blood samples were collected on days 0 (BVDV challenge), 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 14, 18, 21, 32 and 61 for leukocyte count, virus isolation and BVDV serum neutralizing antibodies (SNA). Mild-moderate clinical signs were observed in G3 after BVDV challenge. Group 1 showed lower sum health score and nasal score on d5 and fecal score on d8 compared to G2. Rectal temperature and leukocyte counts were not different between G1 and G2. In contrast, G3 calves had significant leukopenia and lymphopenia from d3 to d7 (P < .05) and higher rectal temperatures on d6 to d8, compared to values on d0 (P < .05). All unvaccinated calves became viremic, while viremia was not detected in G1 or G2. Average daily gain was not different between vaccinated groups, however, only G1 calves had significantly greater (P = .04) ADG compared to non-vaccinated calves during the first 14 days post challenge. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate 3 silage-based stocker diets. In Exp. 1, diets were fed to a total of 276 animals over a period of 3 yr and performance data was collected. In Exp. 2, the same diets were subjected to in vitro digestion for 5 time periods: 0, 6, 12, 24, and 48 h, to evaluate IVDMD, production of fermentation end products, and efficiency of transformation of energy. The experimental diets were similar, except for their protein supplements. They were composed of: 1) 74% corn silage, 15.2% ground ear corn, and 10.8% soybean meal (SBM); 2) 74.4% corn silage, 9.8% ground ear corn, and 15.8% canola meal (CAN); 3) 74.5% corn silage, 9.8% ground ear corn, and 15.7% sunflower meal (SUN). Results from Exp. 1 showed that DMI was similar across all treatments ( P = 0.167), but ADG was greater ( P = 0.007) for animals fed either SBM or CAN than for animals fed SUN (1.29, 1.28, and 1.20 kg/d, respectively). Both CAN and SUN significantly reduced ( P < 0.001) daily feeding cost per animal in comparison to SBM. Exp. 2 revealed that total VFA production was similar for all treatments ( P = 0.185), and greatest molar proportions of propionate were observed for SBM and CAN ( P = 0.02). Additionally, IVDMD was highest for SBM ( P < 0.001). Regression analysis showed that most of the evaluated traits followed a quadratic trend for incubation times ( P ≤ 0.02). On average, the in vitro technique used in this study was able to account for 97.03% of the caloric transformations suffered by DE throughout the different incubation times. Overall, our findings revealed that although animals receiving SUN had the cheapest daily feeding cost, important traits like ADG and feed conversion rate were negatively affected by this treatment. In contrast, data showed that CAN was an effective replacement for SBM for it maintained similar animal performance while decreasing feed costs. Therefore, from a producer standpoint, CAN is a viable alternative to replace the more costly SBM diet in silage-based stocker operations.

The present work aims to analyse jointly four contiguous watersheds in the eastern part of the Serra da Mantiqueira with respect to the distribution of fish fauna and physical structure. The watersheds of Piracuama river, Ribeirão Grande, Buenos and Guaratinguetá are located in Pindamonhangaba, Campos do Jordão and Guaratinguetá municipalities, in the state of São Paulo. Data were collected between the years 2001 and 2010, with collections distributed throughout the seasons, including sites located on the slope and piedmont. The limnological parameters analysed were different between watersheds and habitat structure was different only for the slope segments between Ribeirão Grande and Buenos watersheds, and between Ribeirão Grande and Piracuama watersheds. Thirty-five species of fish were caught, with the highest species richness found in the Ribeirão Grande watershed (30 species), followed by the Piracuama (23 species) and Buenos and Guaratinguetá (21 species each). The most abundant species in both the segments (slope and piedmont) was Trichomycterus itatiayae. The highest degree of species dominance occurred in the Guaratinguetá watershed and in the segment slope, being T. itatiayae the dominant species. Species diversity was lower at the slope than the piedmont, indicating variability in species abundance. Again T. itatiayae was the most abundant species in both segments, showing to be a well adapted species to these streams systems by presenting, as well as other species, morphological adaptations to the stream environment.

Background: The giant Galápagos tortoise, Chelonoidis nigra, is a large-sized terrestrial chelonian of high patrimonial interest. The species recently colonized a small continental archipelago, the Galápagos Islands, where it has been facing novel environmental conditions and limited resource availability. To explore the genomic consequences of this ecological shift, we analyze the transcriptomic variability of five individuals of C. nigra, and compare it to similar data obtained from several continental species of turtles., Results: Having clarified the timing of divergence in the Chelonoidis genus, we report in C. nigra a very low level of genetic polymorphism, signatures of a weakened efficacy of purifying selection, and an elevated mutation load in coding and regulatory sequences. These results are consistent with the hypothesis of an extremely low long-term effective population size in this insular species. Functional evolutionary analyses reveal a reduced diversity of immunity genes in C. nigra, in line with the hypothesis of attenuated pathogen diversity in islands, and an increased selective pressure on genes involved in response to stress, potentially related to the climatic instability of its environment and its elongated lifespan. Finally, we detect no population structure or homozygosity excess in our five-individual sample., Conclusions: These results enlighten the molecular evolution of an endangered taxon in a stressful environment and point to island endemic species as a promising model for the study of the deleterious effects on genome evolution of a reduced long-term population size.

It is currently unclear whether the amino acid substitutions that occur during protein evolution are primarily driven by adaptation, or reflect the random accumulation of neutral changes. When estimated from genomic data, the proportion of adaptive amino acid substitutions, called α, was found to vary greatly across species, from nearly zero in humans to above 0.5 in Drosophila. These variations have been interpreted as reflecting differences in effective population size, adaptation being supposedly more efficient in large populations. Here, we investigate the influence of effective population size and other biological parameters on the rate of adaptive evolution by simulating the evolution of a coding sequence under Fisher's geometric formalism. We explicitly model recurrent environmental changes and the subsequent adaptive walks, followed by periods of stasis during which purifying selection dominates. We show that, under a variety of conditions, the effective population size has only a moderate influence on α, and an even weaker influence on the per generation rate of selective sweeps, modifying the prevalent view in current literature. The rate of environmental change and, interestingly, the dimensionality of the phenotypic space (organismal complexity) affect the adaptive rate more deeply than does the effective population size. We discuss the reasons why verbal arguments have been misleading on that subject and revisit the empirical evidence. Our results question the relevance of the "α" parameter as an indicator of the efficiency of molecular adaptation.

Neutral rates of molecular evolution vary across species, and this variation has been shown to be related to biological traits. One of the first patterns to be observed in vertebrates has been an inverse relationship between body mass (BM) and substitution rates. The effects of three major life-history traits (LHT) that covary with BM - metabolic rate, generation time and longevity (LON) - have been invoked to explain this relationship. However, most of the theoretical and empirical evidence supporting this relationship comes from endothermic vertebrates, that is, mammals and birds, in which the environmental conditions, especially temperature, do not have a direct impact on cellular and molecular biology. We analysed the variations in mitochondrial and nuclear rates of synonymous substitution across 224 turtle species and examined their correlation with two LHT (LON and BM) and two environmental variables [latitude (LAT) and habitat]. Our analyses indicate that in turtles, neutral rates of molecular evolution are hardly correlated with LON or BM. Rather, both the mitochondrial and nuclear substitution rates are significantly correlated with LAT - faster evolution in the tropics - and especially so for aquatic species. These results question the generality of the relationships reported in mammals and birds and suggest that environmental factors might be the strongest determinants of the mutation rate in ectotherms., (© 2012 The Authors. The objective of this study is to compare salivary hydrogen peroxide (HP) release kinetics and potential toxicity of systemic exposure of four different whitening products. A double-blind, randomized controlled trial was conducted in a Portuguese dental faculty clinic. Two hundred forty volunteers were randomized to eight intervention groups. Participants were randomly assigned to receive active or placebo applications of one of four different products: Opalescence 10% PF™ (OPL), Vivastyle® 10%™ (VS10%), Vivadent Paint On Plus™ (PO+), and Trés White Supreme™ (TWS). Saliva collection was obtained by established methods at different times. The HP salivary content was determined by a photometric method. Salivary HP variations, total amount of salivary HP, and counts of subjects above the safe daily HP dose were the main outcome measures. All whitening systems significantly released HP to the saliva when compared to placebo, and all showed different release kinetics. The adaptable tray system (TWS) presented a risk increase of 37% [20-54%, 95% confidence interval] when compared to the other systems. The use of an adaptable tray whitening system with higher concentration of HP increases the toxicity potential.

Detecting the factors that determine the interruption of gene flow between populations is key to understanding how speciation occurs. In this context, caves are an excellent system for studying processes of colonization, differentiation and speciation, since they represent discrete geographical units often with known geological histories. Here, we asked whether discontinuous calcareous areas and cave systems represent major barriers to gene flow within and among the five species of Sardinian cave salamanders (genus Hydromantes) and whether intraspecific genetic structure parallels geographic distance within and among caves. We generated mitochondrial cytochrome b gene sequences from 184 individuals representing 48 populations, and used a Bayesian phylogeographic approach to infer possible areas of cladogenesis for these species and reconstruct historical and current dispersal routes among distinct populations. Our results show deep genetic divergence within and among all Sardinian cave salamander species, which can mostly be attributed to the effects of mountains and discontinuities in major calcareous areas and cave systems acting as barriers to gene flow. While these salamander species can also occur outside caves, our results indicate that there is a very poor dispersal of these species between separate cave systems.

The superfamily Testudinoidea is the most diverse and widely distributed clade of extant turtles. Surprisingly, despite an extensive fossil record, and increasing amount of molecular data available, the temporal origin of this group is still largely unknown. To address this issue, we used a comprehensive molecular dataset to perform phylogenetic and molecular dating analyses, as well as seven fossil constraints to calibrate the ages of the nodes in the phylogeny. The molecular dataset includes the complete mitochondrial genomes of 37 turtle species, including newly sequenced mitochondrial genomes of Phrynops hilarii, Emys orbicularis, Rhinoclemmys punctularia, and Chelonoidis nigra, and four nuclear markers. Our results revealed that the earliest divergences within crown testudinoids occurred around 95.0 Mya, in the early Late Cretaceous, earlier than previously reported, raising new questions about the historical biogeography of this group., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Inc. Background: Clinical management of malaria is a major health issue in sub-Saharan Africa. New strategies based on intermittent preventive treatment (IPT) can tackle disease burden by simultaneously reducing frequency of infections and life-threatening illness in infants (IPTi) and children (IPTc), while allowing for immunity to build up. However, concerns as to whether immunity develops efficiently in treated individuals, and whether there is a rebound effect after treatment is halted, have made it imperative to define the effects that IPTi and IPTc exert on the clinical malaria scenario., Methods and Findings: Here, we simulate several schemes of intervention under different transmission settings, while varying immunity build up assumptions. Our model predicts that infection risk and effectiveness of acquisition of clinical immunity under prophylactic effect are associated to intervention impact during treatment and follow-up periods. These effects vary across regions of different endemicity and are highly correlated with the interplay between the timing of interventions in age and the age dependent risk of acquiring an infection. However, even when significant rebound effects are predicted to occur, the overall intervention impact is positive., Conclusions: IPTi is predicted to have minimal impact on the acquisition of clinical immunity, since it does not interfere with the occurrence of mild infections, thus failing to reduce the underlying force of infection. On the contrary, IPTc has a significant potential to reduce transmission, specifically in areas where it is already low to moderate.

The electronic transitions and resonance-enhanced vibrational excitations of octafluorocyclopentene (c-C5F8) have been investigated using high-resolution photoabsorption spectroscopy in the energy range 6-11 eV. In addition, the high-resolution electron energy loss spectrum (HREELS) was recorded under the electric dipolar excitation conditions (100 eV incident energy, approximately 0 degrees scattering angle) over the 5-14 eV energy loss range. A He(I) photoelectron spectrum (PES) has also been recorded between 11 and 20 eV, allowing us to derive a more precise value of (11.288 +/- 0.002) eV for the ground neutral state adiabatic ionization energy. All spectra presented in this paper represent the first and highest resolution data yet reported for octafluorocyclopentene. Ab initio calculations have been performed for helping in the assignment of the spectral bands for both neutral excited states and ionic states.

The amount of counterions, measured by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), in layer-by-layer (LbL) films of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS), prepared from solutions with various NaCl concentrations, is shown to be greatly influenced by the film drying process: a smaller amount of counterions is observed in films dried after adsorption of each layer, when compared with films that were never dried during the film preparation. This is attributed to the formation of NaCl nanocrystals during the drying process which dissolve when the film is again immersed in the next polyelectrolyte solution. The presence of bonded water molecules was confirmed in wet films indicating that the counterions near the ionic groups are immersed in a water network. The number of counterions is dependent on the amount of salt in polyelectrolyte solutions in such a way that for a concentration of 0.2 M the relative amount of counterions attains saturation for both dried and wet samples, indicating that the process which leads the aggregation of counterions near of the ionic groups is not influenced by the drying process. Moreover, it is proven for wet samples that the increase in salt concentration leads to a decrease in the number of PAH ionized groups as predicted by the Muthukumar theory [J. Chem. Phys. 120 (2004) 9343] accounting for the counterion condensation on flexible polyelectrolytes.

Gripenet has been monitoring the activity of influenza-like-illness (ILI) with the aid of volunteers via the internet in the Netherlands and Belgium since 2003 and in Portugal since 2005. In contrast with the traditional system of sentinel networks of mainly primary care physicians coordinated by the European Influenza Surveillance Scheme (EISS), Gripenet obtains its data directly from the population. Any resident of the three countries can participate in Gripenet by completing an application form on the appropriate websites (http://www.griepmeting.nl for the Netherlands and Belgium, http://www.gripenet.pt for Portugal), which contains various medical, geographic and behavioural questions. Participants report weekly on the website any symptoms they have experienced since their last visit. ILI incidence is determined on the basis of a uniform case definition. In the 2006/2007 season, 19,623 persons participated in Gripenet in the Netherlands, 7,025 in Belgium and 3,118 in Portugal. The rise, peak and decline of ILI activity occurred at similar times according to Gripenet and EISS. However, ILI attack rates in the Netherlands (6.6%), Belgium (6.1%) and Portugal (5.6%) were remarkably more similar in Gripenet than in EISS (0.8%, 3.9%, and 0.6% respectively). Monitoring ILI activity with the direct participation of volunteers provides similar incidence curves compared to the traditional system coordinated by EISS. Whereas EISS provides an established system whose data is validated by virology tests, Gripenet is a fast and flexible monitoring system whose uniformity allows for direct comparison of ILI rates between countries. A current objective of Gripenet is to engage more European countries.

The amount of counterions in layer-by-layer (LBL) films of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS) has been determined with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) for films prepared from solutions with various NaCl concentrations. Sodium and chloride counterions are present in LBL films produced from salt solutions, which are located at the surface and in the bulk of the films. The percentage of bulk counterions increases with the ionic strength of the polyelectrolyte before reaching a constant value. The bulk sodium/sulfur percentage ratios tend to 0.8 for samples washed with pure water and for samples washed with NaCl aqueous solutions, while the bulk chlorine/nitrogen percentage ratios tend to 0.5 for the same samples. The ratio between the percentages of polyelectrolyte ionic groups lies close to unity for all samples, indicating that counterions do not contribute to charge compensation in the polyelectrolyte during the adsorption process. The presence of counterions in LBL films is explained by Manning condensation near the polyelectrolyte ionic groups, leading to inter-polyelectrolyte ionic bondings via ionic networks. It is believed that condensation leads to the formation of NaCl crystallites in these LBL films, which was confirmed by X-ray diffraction measurements.

The design of a data processing prototype for intensity based fiber optic sensors is presented. This processing unit fulfills the requirement of a simple and reliable measurement technique to the laboratory user. In this particular experiment, the data processing unit was tested for an optical fiber displacement sensor.
