Quantum Physics - Abstract
Transition probabilities for a class of two level systems described by explicitly time dependent Hamiltonians are considered. Provided only that the approach to the infinite time limit is non-trivial falling at least as fast as 1/t for large t, the transition probability takes a particularly simple form depending only on the value of Hamiltonian parameters in this limit., Comment: 3 figures

APOE ɛ4, the most significant genetic risk factor for Alzheimer disease (AD), may mask effects of other loci. We re-analyzed genome-wide association study (GWAS) data from the International Genomics of Alzheimer's Project (IGAP) Consortium in APOE ɛ4+ (10 352 cases and 9207 controls) and APOE ɛ4- (7184 cases and 26 968 controls) subgroups as well as in the total sample testing for interaction between a single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and APOE ɛ4 status. Techni-fermions are added as stacks of D7-anti-D7 techni-branes within the framework of a holographic technicolor model that has been proposed as a realization of walking technicolor. The stability of the embedding of these branes is determined. When a sufficiently low bulk cut-off is provided the fluctuations remain small. For a longer walking region, as would be required in any realistic model of electroweak symmetry breaking, a larger bulk cut-off is needed and in this case the oscillations destabilize., Comment: Latex, 25 pages, 10 figures

High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
The relationship between local Weyl scaling invariant models and local dilatation invariant actions is critically scrutinized. While actions invariant under local Weyl scalings can be constructed in a straightforward manner, actions invariant under local dilatation transformations can only be achieved in a very restrictive case. The invariant couplings of matter fields to an Abelian vector field carrying a non-trivial scaling weight can be easily built, but an invariant Abelian vector kinetic term can only be realized when the local scale symmetry is spontaneously broken., Comment: 3 pages

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
The minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) is extended by including an additional pair of constrained Higgs doublet superfields through which the electroweak symmetry is nonlinearly realized. The superpotential couplings of this constrained Higgs doublet pair to the MSSM Higgs doublet pair catalyze the later nontrivial vacuum expectation values. The mass spectrum of the Higgs scalars and Higgsino-gaugino sector is presented for several choices of supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking and Higgs superpotential mass parameters. The effect of the the additional constrained fields and multiple vacuum expectation values on the lowest mass neutral Higgs scalar production and decay is presented., Comment: 8 pages, 10 figures, Proceedings of the DPF-2011 Conference, Providence, RI, August 8-13, 2011

The Higgs and Higgsino-gaugino mass spectrum is presented for several choices of supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking and Higgs superpotential mass parameters. High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
Holographic currents and their associated Ward identities are derived in the framework of gravity/gauge duality. Holographic improvements of the energy-momentum tensor and R-symmetry current which are consistent with the Ward identities are displayed. The effects of specific string loop corrections to the bulk action are included as four derivative effective lagrangian terms and their contributions to the trace and R-symmetry anomalies of the boundary theory are determined. As an example, the construction is applied to the N=2 conformal supergravity which is taken to be dual to a boundary SU(N)xSU(N), N=1 superconformal field theory., Comment: 25 pages, no figures

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
A minimal candidate for dark matter is provided by a stable standard model singlet hermitian scalar field. The quantum mechanical effects of this singlet are explored in a model where the standard model Higgs boson has a large non-minimal coupling to the Ricci scalar and plays the role of the inflaton. Imposition of the slow roll inflation cosmological constraints restricts the allowed values of the Higgs boson mass, its coupling to the dark matter and the dark matter self-coupling., Comment: 6 pages; 7 figures; To be published in the proceedings of DPF-2009, Detroit, MI, July 2009, eConf C090726

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
The standard model Higgs boson can serve as the inflaton field of slow roll inflationary models provided it exhibits a large non-minimal coupling with the gravitational scalar curvature. The Higgs boson self interactions and its couplings with a standard model singlet scalar serving as the source of dark matter are then subject to cosmological constraints. These bounds, which can be more stringent than those arising from vacuum stability and perturbative triviality alone, still allow values for the Higgs boson mass which should be accessible at the LHC. As the Higgs boson coupling to the dark matter strengthens, lower values of the Higgs boson mass consistent with the cosmological data are allowed., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
Brane world oscillations manifest themselves as massive vector gauge fields. Their coupling to the Standard Model is deduced using the method of nonlinear realizations of the spontaneously broken higher dimensional space-time symmetries. Brane vectors are stable and weakly interacting, and therefore escape particle detectors unnoticed. LEP and Tevatron data on the production of a single photon in conjunction with missing energy are used to delineate experimentally excluded regions of brane vector parameter space. The additional region of parameter space accessible to the LHC as well as a future lepton linear collider is also determined by means of this process., Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures

High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
A Kaluza-Klein decomposition of higher dimensional gravity is performed in the flexible brane world scenario and the properties of the extra vectors resulting from this decomposition are explored. These vectors become massive due to a gravitational Higgs mechanism in which the brane oscillation Nambu-Goldstone bosons become the longitudinal component of the vector fields. The vector mass is found to be proportional to the exponential of the vacuum expectation value of the radion (dilaton) field and as such its magnitude is model dependent. Using the structure of the embedding geometry, the couplings of these vectors to the Standard Model, including those resulting from the extrinsic curvature, are deduced. As an example, we show that for 5D space-time the geometry of the bulk-brane world, either intrinsic or extrinsic, only depends on the extra vector and the 4D graviton. The connection between the embedding geometry and coset construction by non-linear realization is also presented., Comment: 20 pages, no figures

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
Higgs boson decays in flexible brane world models with stable, massive gravi-vectors are considered. Such vectors couple bilinearly to the Standard Model fields through either the Standard Model energy-momentum tensor, the weak hypercharge field strength or the Higgs scalar. The role of the coupling involving the extrinsic curvature is highlighted. It is found that within the presently allowed parameter space, the decay rate of the Higgs into two gravi-vectors (which would appear as an invisible Higgs decay) can be comparable to the rate for any of the Standard Model decay modes., Comment: 5 pages, 11 figures, revtex

Local oscillations of the brane world are manifested as masssive vector fields. Their coupling to the Standard Model can be obtained using the method of nonlinear realizations of the spontaneously broken higher dimensional space-time symmetries, and to an extent, are model independent. High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
Coset methods are used to construct the action describing the dynamics associated with the spontaneous breaking of the Poincare symmetries of D dimensional space-time due to the embedding of a p-brane with codimension N=D-p-1. The resulting world volume action is an ISO(1,p+N) invariant generalization of the Nambu-Goto action in d=p+1 dimensional space-time. Analogous results are obtained for an AdS p-brane with codimension N embedded in D dimensional AdS space, yielding an SO(2,p+N) invariant version of the Nambu-Goto action in d=p+1 dimensional space-time. Attention is focused on a supersymmetric extension of the D=6 Minkowski space case with an embedded p=3 brane; a particular realization of which is provided by a non-BPS vortex. Here both the Nambu-Goto-Akulov-Volkov action and its dual tensor form are presented., Comment: 25 pages, no figures

Coset methods are used to construct the action describing the dynamics associated with the spontaneous breaking of the local Poincare symmetries of D dimensional space-time due to the embedding of a p-brane with codimension N=D-p-1. The resulting action is an ISO(1,p+N) invariant form of the Einstein-Hilbert action, which, in addition to the gravitational vielbein, also includes N massive gauge fields corresponding to the broken space translation symmetries which together carry the fundamental representation of the unbroken SO(N) gauge symmetry and an SO(N) Yang-Mills field localized on the brane. The long wavelength dynamics of the gravitating p-brane is the same as the action of an SO(N) vector massive Proca field and a non-Abelian SO(N) Yang-Mills field all coupled to gravity in d=(1+p) dimensional space-time. The general results are specialized to determine the effective action for the gravitating vortex solution in the D=6 Abelian Higgs-Kibble model., Comment: 28 pages, no figures

High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
Actions governing the dynamics of the Nambu-Goldstone modes resulting from the spontaneous breaking of the SO(4,2) and $SU(2,2|1)$ isometries of five dimensional anti-de Sitter space ($AdS_{5}$) and SUSY $AdS_{5}\times S_1$ spaces respectively due to a restriction of the motion to embedded four dimensional $AdS_{4}$ space and four dimensional Minkowski space ($M_4$) probe branes are presented. The dilatonic Nambu-Goldstone mode governing the motion of the $M_4$ space probe brane into the covolume of the SUSY $AdS_5\times S_1$ space is found to be unstable. No such instablility appears in the other cases. Gauging these symmetries leads to an Einstein-Hilbert action containing, in addition to the gravitational vierbein, a massive Abelian vector field coupled to gravity., Comment: 6 pages, 0 figures, to appear in Proceedings of IRGAC 2006: 2nd International Conference on Quantum Theories and Renormalization Group in Gravity and Cosmology, Barcelona

High Energy Physics - Theory ,General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology - Abstract
Coset methods are used to construct the action describing the dynamics associated with the spontaneous breaking of the local symmetries of AdS_{d+1} space due to the embedding of an AdS_d brane. The resulting action is an SO(2,d) invariant AdS form of the Einstein-Hilbert action, which in addition to the AdS_d gravitational vielbein, also includes a massive vector field localized on the brane. Its long wavelength dynamics is the same as a massive Abelian vector field coupled to gravity in AdS_d space., Comment: 17 pages

High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
Nonlinear realizations describing the spontaneous breakown of supersymmetry and R symmetry are constructed using the Goldstino and R axion fields. The associated R current, supersymmetry current and energy-momentum tensor are shown to be related under the nonlinear supersymmetry transformations. Nonlinear realizations of the superconformal algebra carried by these degrees of freedom are also displayed. The divergences of the R and dilatation currents are related to the divergence of the superconformal currents through nonlinear supersymmetry transformations which in turn relates the explicit breakings of these symmetries., Comment: 22 pages, LaTeX

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
The electron and muon number violating muonium-antimuonium oscillation process can proceed provided neutrinos have non-zero masses and mix among the various generations. Modifying the Standard Model only by the inclusion of singlet right handed neutrino fields and allowing for general neutrino masses and mixings, the leading order matrix element contributing to this process is computed. For the particularly interesting case where the neutrino masses are generated by a see-saw mechanism with a very large Majorana mass $M_R>>M_W$, it is found that both the very light and very heavy Majorana neutrinos each give comparable contributions to the oscillation time scale proportional to $M_R^2$. Present experimental limits set by the non-observation of the oscillation process sets a lower limit on $M_R$ of roughly of order $10^4$ GeV., Comment: 12 pages, LaTeX, 1 figure

High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
Field theoretic models possessing a global internal fermionic shift symmetry are considered. When such a symmetry is realized locally, spin 3/2 fields appear naturally as gauge fields. Implementation of the gauging procedure requires not only the usual replacement of ordinary derivatives by covariant derivatives containing the spin 3/2 fields, but also the inclusion of additional monomials. The Higgs mechanism and the high energy Nambu-Goldstone fermion equivalence theorem are explicitly demonstrated., Comment: 9 pages

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
The (group and spin space) matrix Hamiltonian describing the dynamics of a nonrelativistic spin 1/2 particle moving in a static, but spatially dependent, non-Abelian magnetic field in two spatial dimensions is shown to take the form of an anticommutator of a nilpotent operator and its hermitian conjugate. Consequently, the (group space) matrix Hamiltonians for the two different spin projections form partners of a supersymmetric quantum mechanical system. The resulting supersymmetry algebra is exploited to explicitly construct the exact zero energy ground state wavefunction(s) for the system. The remaining eigenstates and eigenvalues of the two partner Hamiltonians form positive energy degenerate pairs., Comment: 10 pages, LaTeX

High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
The superspace Lagrangian formulation of N=1 supersymmetric quantum mechanics is presented. The general Lagrangian constructed out of chiral and antichiral supercoordinates containing up to two derivatives and with a canonically normalized kinetic energy term describes the motion of a nonrelativistic spin 1/2 particle with Land\'e g-factor 2 moving in two spatial dimensions under the influence of a static but spatially dependent magnetic field. Noether's theorem is derived for the general case and is used to construct superspace dependent charges whose lowest components give the superconformal generators. The supercoordinate of charges containing an R symmetry charge, the supersymmetry charges and the Hamiltonian are combined to form a supercharge supercoordinate. Superconformal Ward identities for the quantum effective action are derived from the conservation equations and the source of potential symmetry breaking terms are identified., Comment: 59 pages, LaTeX

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
It is shown that the 2 X 2 matrix Hamiltonian describing the dynamics of a charged spin 1/2 particle with g-factor 2 moving in an arbitrary, spatially dependent, magnetic field in two spatial dimensions can be written as the anticommuator of a nilpotent operator and its hermitian conjugate. Consequently, the Hamiltonians for the two different spin projections form partners of a supersymmetric quantum mechanical system. The resulting supersymmetry algebra can then be exploited to explicitly construct the exact zero energy ground state wavefunction for the system. Modulo this ground state, the remainder of the eigenstates and eigenvalues of the two partner Hamiltonians form positive energy degenerate pairs. We also construct the spatially asymptotic form of the magnetic field which produces a finite magnetic flux and associated zero energy normalizable ground state wavefunction., Comment: 10 pages, LaTeX

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
The consequences of large radius extra space-time compactified dimensions on the four dimensional one loop effective potential are investigated for a model which includes scalar self interactions and Yukawa coupling to fermions. The Kaluza-Klein tower of states associated with the extra compact dimensions shifts the location of the effective potential minimum and modifies its curvature. The dependence of these effects on the radius of the extra dimension is illustrated for various choices of coupling constants and masses. For large radii, the consequence of twisting the fermion boundary condition on the compactified dimensions is numerically found to produce but a negligible effect on the effective potential., Comment: 14 pages, LaTeX, 6 Postscript figures

High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
Nontrivial twisted boundary conditions associated with extra compact dimensions produce an ambiguity in the value of the four dimensional coupling constants of the renormalizable interactions of the twisted fields' zero modes. Resolving this indeterminancy would require a knowledge of the exact form of the higher dimensional action including the coefficients of higher dimensional operators. For the case of moderately sized extra dimensions, the uncertainty in the coupling constants can be of order one and may lead to modifications in the stability of the model., Comment: 8 pages, REVTeX

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
Simultaneous nonlinear realizations of supersymmetry and softly broken scale and chiral symmetries are investigated. To guarantee Nambu-Goldstone realizations of the symmetries, the Goldstino decay constant is forced to vary as the explicit soft scale and chiral symmetry breaking parameters. Consequently, it must vanish in the chiral limit and the simultaneous nonlinear realizations of the super and scale symmetries proves inconsistent., Comment: 10 pages, LaTex

High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
The effects of extra space-time dimensions on the Wilsonian effective K\"ahler potential and the perturbative one loop effective K\"ahler potential are determined within the framework of an Abelian gauge theory with N=2 supersymmetric field content. The relation between the K\"ahler metric and the effective gauge couplings which leads to the absence of radiative corrections to the K\"ahler potential is expressed as a function of the radius of compactification of a fifth dimension. In general, the quantum corrections to the low energy K\"ahler potential are shown to grow with this radius reflecting the underlying higher dimensional nature of the theory., Comment: 16 pages, LaTeX, 3 Postscript figures

Astrophysics - Abstract
Until recently, most asteroids were thought to be solid bodies whose shapes were determined largely by collisions with other asteroids. It now seems that many asteroids are little more than rubble piles, held together by self-gravity; this means that their shapes may be strongly distorted by tides during close encounters with planets. Here we report on numerical simulations of encounters between a ellipsoid-shaped rubble-pile asteroid and the Earth. After an encounter, many of the simulated asteroids develop the same rotation rate and distinctive shape (i.e., highly elongated with a single convex side, tapered ends, and small protuberances swept back against the rotation direction) as 1620 Geographos. Since our numerical studies show that these events occur with some frequency, we suggest that Geographos may be a tidally distorted object. In addition, our work shows that 433 Eros, which will be visited by the NEAR spacecraft in 1999, is much like Geographos, which suggests that it too may have been molded by tides in the past., Comment: Accepted to AJ, 30 pages, 5 postscript figures, LaTeX, aasms4.sty

25 páginas, 6 figuras, 2 tablas, Characterization of the genetic landscape of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias (ADD) provides a unique opportunity for a better understanding of the associated pathophysiological processes. We performed a two-stage genome-wide association study totaling 111,326 clinically diagnosed/'proxy' AD cases and 677,663 controls. We found 75 risk loci, of which 42 were new at the time of analysis. Pathway enrichment analyses confirmed the involvement of amyloid/tau pathways and highlighted microglia implication. Gene prioritization in the new loci identified 31 genes that were suggestive of new genetically associated processes, including the tumor necrosis factor alpha pathway through the linear ubiquitin chain assembly complex. We also built a new genetic risk score associated with the risk of future AD/dementia or progression from mild cognitive impairment to AD/dementia. The improvement in prediction led to a 1.6- to 1.9-fold increase in AD risk from the lowest to the highest decile, in addition to effects of age and the APOE ε4 allele., This work was funded by a grant (EADB) from the EU Joint Programme – Neurodegenerative Disease Research. INSERM UMR1167 is also funded by the INSERM, Institut Pasteur de Lille, Lille Métropole Communauté Urbaine and French government’s LABEX DISTALZ program (development of innovative strategies for a transdisciplinary approach to AD). High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
In models of spontaneously broken supersymmetry, certain light gravitino processes are governed by the coupling of its Goldstino components. The rules for constructing SUSY and gauge invariant actions involving the Goldstino couplings to matter and gauge fields are presented. The explicit operator construction is found to be at variance with some previously reported claims. A phenomenological consequence arising from light gravitino interactions in supernova is reexamined and scrutinized., Comment: Latex, 14 pages

High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
Renormalization group methods are used to determine the evolution of the low energy Wilson effective action for supersymmetric nonlinear sigma models in four dimensions. For the case of supersymmetric $CP^{(N-1)}$ models, the K\"ahler potential is determined exactly and is shown to exhibit a nontrivial ultraviolet fixed point in addition to a trivial infrared fixed point. The strong coupling behavior of the theory suggests the possible existence of additional relevant operators or nonperturbative degrees of freedom., Comment: 9 pages, LaTeX, 1 eps figure

High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
The Wilson (exact) renormalization group equations are used to determine the evolution of a general low energy N=1 supersymmetric action containing a U(1) gauge vector multiplet and a neutral chiral multiplet. The effective theory evolves towards satisfying a fixed relation where the K\"ahler potential and effective gauge coupling are obtained from a N=2 supersymmetric holomorphic prepotential., Comment: 10 pages, LaTeX

A nonlinearly realized supersymmetric action describing the invariant couplings of the Goldstino to matter is constructed. Using the Akulov-Volkov Lagrangian, any operator can be made part of a supersymmetric invariant action. Of particular interest are interaction terms which include the product of the Akulov-Volkov Lagrangian with the ordinary matter Lagrangian as well as the coupling of the product of the covariant derivative of the Goldstino field to the matter supersymmetry current. The later is the lowest dimensional operator linear in the Goldstino field. A Goldstino Goldberger-Treiman relation is established and shown to be satisfied by the effective action., Comment: 21 pages, LaTeX
