The 21-cm spectral line widths, $w_{50}$, of galaxies are an approximate tracer of their dynamical masses, such that the dark matter halo mass function is imprinted in the number density of galaxies as a function of $w_{50}$. Correcting observed number counts for survey incompleteness at the level of accuracy needed to place competitive constraints on warm dark matter (WDM) cosmological models is very challenging, but forward-modelling the results of cosmological hydrodynamical galaxy formation simulations into observational data space is more straightforward. We take this approach to make predictions for an ALFALFA-like survey from simulations using the EAGLE galaxy formation model in both cold (CDM) and WDM cosmogonies. We find that for WDM cosmogonies more galaxies are detected at the low-$w_{50}$ end of the 21-cm velocity width function than in the CDM cosmogony, contrary to what might na\"ively be expected from the suppression of power on small scales in such models. This is because low-mass galaxies form later and retain more gas in WDM cosmogonies (with EAGLE). While some shortcomings in the treatment of cold gas in the EAGLE model preclude placing definitive constraints on WDM scenarios, our analysis illustrates that near-future simulations with more accurate modelling of cold gas will likely make strong constraints possible, especially in conjunction with new 21-cm surveys such as WALLABY., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures. Dark matter may be detected in X-ray decay, including from the decay of the dark matter particles that make up the Milky Way (MW) halo. We use a range of density profiles to compute X-ray line intensity profiles, with a focus on the resonantly produced sterile neutrino dark matter candidate. Compared to the Navarro--Frenk--White density profile, we show that using an adiabatically contracted halo profile suppresses the line intensity in the halo outskirts and enhances it in the Galactic Centre (GC), although this enhancement is eliminated by the likely presence of a core within 3~kpc. Comparing our results to MW halo observations, other X-ray observations, and structure formation constraints implies a sterile neutrino mixing angle parameter $s_{11}\equiv\sin^{2}(2\theta)\times10^{11}\sim[3,4]$ (particle lifetime $\tau_{28}\equiv\tau/(10^{28}\mathrm{sec})\sim[1.0,1.3]$), which is nevertheless is strong tension with some reported non-detections. We study the statistics of dwarf galaxy populations as a function of environment in the cold dark matter (CDM) and warm dark matter (WDM) cosmogonies, using hydrodynamical simulations starting from initial conditions with matched phases but differing power spectra, and evolved with the EAGLE galaxy formation model. We measure the abundance of dwarf galaxies within 3~Mpc of DM haloes with a present-day halo mass similar to that of the Milky Way (MW), and find that the radial distribution of galaxies $M_{*}>10^7$\Msun is nearly identical for WDM and CDM. However, the cumulative mass function becomes shallower for WDM at lower masses, yielding 50~per~cent fewer dwarf galaxies of $M_{*}\gtrsim10^{5}$~\Msun than CDM. The suppression of low-mass halo counts in WDM relative to CDM increases significantly from high-density regions to low-density regions for haloes in the region of the half-mode mass, $M_\rm{hm}$. The luminous fraction in the two models also diverges from the overdense to the underdense regions for $M>2M_\rm{hm}$, as the increased collapse delay at small densities pushes the collapse to after the reionization threshold. However, the stellar mass--halo mass relation of WDM haloes relative to CDM increases towards lower-density regions. Finally, we conclude that the suppression of galaxies with $M_{*}\gtrsim10^5$\Msun between WDM and CDM is independent of density: the suppression of halo counts and the luminous fraction is balanced by an enhancement in stellar mass--halo mass relation., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, manuscript to be submitted to MNRAS

The JWST mission is in the process of probing the galaxy mass function at $z>10$, when conceivably any delay in halo assembly due to the presence of a dwarf galaxy-scale power spectrum cutoff may drastically suppress the number of galaxies relative to the cold dark matter (CDM) expectation. We employ N-body simulations of CDM and warm dark matter (WDM) to explore how the difference in halo collapse time between these models scales with $z=0$ descendant halo mass. We demonstrate that collapse begins first for the most massive haloes, and the delay in collapse time between CDM and WDM haloes correlates inversely with descendant mass. We thus infer that only present-day dwarf galaxies exhibit any difference in their assembly history between CDM and WDM at $z=10$, and therefore support previous studies that have found JWST is unlikely to determine whether our Universe is better described by the CDM cosmology or the WDM cosmology without favourable lensing studies., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, to be submitted to MNRAS. The sterile neutrino ($N_1$) features in multiple extensions of the standard model and is a compelling dark matter candidate, especially as the decay of $N_1$ with mass $m_\mathrm{s}=7.1\mathrm{keV}$ is a possible source for the unexplained $3.55\mathrm{keV}$ X-ray line reported in galaxy clusters. This particle will be accessible to the XRISM X-ray mission over the next 12 months. We revisit the physics behind $N_1$ and the uncertainty in its parameters. We compare predictions for the $m_{s}=7.1\mathrm{keV}$ $N_1$ mixing angle, $\sin^2(2\theta)$, and half-mode mass, $M_\mathrm{hm}$, as described in the $\nu$MSM standard model extension to existing X-ray observations and structure formation constraints. The strongest available constraints rule out $N_1$ as a dark matter candidate, and a more optimistic reading of the data prefers $\sin^2(2\theta)=5\times10^{-11}$ and $M_\mathrm{hm}=3.5\times10^{8}M_{\odot}$. We highlight that the most promising upcoming opportunity for a detection is to find a line of velocity dispersion $\sim500\mathrm{kms}^{-1}$ in the Virgo cluster with XRISM, and then draw up a list of future objects of study to determine: (i) whether the line is from dark matter generally, and (ii) if from dark matter, whether that candidate is indeed $N_1$., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures. We introduce a machine learning method for estimating the sensitivity of strong lens observations to dark matter subhaloes in the lens. Our training data include elliptical power-law lenses, Hubble Deep Field sources, external shear, and noise and PSF for the Euclid VIS instrument. We set the concentration of the subhaloes using a $v_\mathrm{max}$-$r_\mathrm{max}$ relation. We then estimate the dark matter subhalo sensitivity in $16{,}000$ simulated strong lens observations with depth and resolution resembling Euclid VIS images. We find that, with a $3\sigma$ detection threshold, $2.35$ per cent of pixels inside twice the Einstein radius are sensitive to subhaloes with a mass $M_\mathrm{max}\leq 10^{10}M_\odot$, $0.03$ per cent are sensitive to $M_\mathrm{max}\leq 10^{9}M_\odot$, and, the limit of sensitivity is found to be $M_\mathrm{max}=10^{8.8\pm0.2}M_\odot$. Using our sensitivity maps and assuming CDM, we estimate that Euclid-like lenses will yield $1.43^{+0.14}_{-0.11}[f_\mathrm{sub}^{-1}]$ detectable subhaloes per lens in the entire sample, but this increases to $35.6^{+0.9}_{-0.9}[f_\mathrm{sub}^{-1}]$ per lens in the most sensitive lenses. Estimates are given in units of the inverse of the substructure mass fraction $f_\mathrm{sub}^{-1}$. Assuming $f_\mathrm{sub}=0.01$, one in every $70$ lenses in general should yield a detection, or one in every $\sim$ three lenses in the most sensitive sample. From $170,000$ new strong lenses detected by Euclid, we expect $\sim 2500$ new subhalo detections. Milky Way (MW) satellites exhibit a diverse range of internal kinematics, reflecting in turn a diverse set of subhalo density profiles. These profiles include large cores and dense cusps, which any successful dark matter model must explain simultaneously. A plausible driver of such diversity is self-interactions between dark matter particles (SIDM) if the cross section passes the threshold for the gravothermal collapse phase at the characteristic velocities of the MW satellites. In this case, some of the satellites are expected to be hosted by subhalos that are still in the classical SIDM core phase, while those in the collapse phase would have cuspy inner profiles, with a SIDM-driven intermediate mass black hole (IMBH) in the centre as a consequence of the runaway collapse. We develop an analytical framework that takes into account the cosmological assembly of halos and is calibrated to previous simulations; we then predict the timescales and mass scales ($M_{\rm BH}$) for the formation of IMBHs in velocity-dependent SIDM (vdSIDM) models as a function of the present-day halo mass, $M_0$. Finally, we estimate the region in the parameter space of the effective cross section and $M_0$ for a subclass of vdSIDM models that result in a diverse MW satellite population, as well as their corresponding fraction of SIDM-collapsed halos and those halos' inferred IMBH masses. We predict the latter to be in the range $0.1-1000~ {\rm M_\odot}$ with a $M_{\rm BH}-M_0$ relation that has a similar slope, but lower normalization, than the extrapolated empirical relation of super-massive black holes found in massive galaxies., Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures, published in PRD. Any successful model of dark matter must explain the diversity of observed Milky Way (MW) satellite density profiles, from very dense ultrafaints to large, low density satellites such as Crater~II that appear to be larger their anticipated host dark matter haloes. We consider cold dark matter (CDM), warm dark matter (WDM, 3.3keV thermal relic power spectrum), and a self-interacting dark matter model (SIDM) that induces gravothermal collapse in low mass subhaloes. Predictions for these density profiles are complicated by the limitations of simulation resolution in the stripping of subhaloes by the MW system, therefore we make predictions for satellite properties in these three models using $N$-body simulations combined with a semi-analytic halo stripping algorithm. We find that most CDM and WDM subhaloes of mass $>10^{8}$$M_{\odot}$ are large enough after stripping to fit most satellites; however, the required amount of stripping often requires a stronger tidal field than is available on the subhalo's orbit. The lower concentrations of WDM subhaloes enable this model to explain the required satellite masses with less stripping than is necessary for CDM, and is thus consistent with orbits of larger pericentres. SIDM cores offer the best fits to massive, low density satellites at the expense of predicting many $>10^{9}$$M_{\odot}$ subhaloes to host low density satellites with no observed analogue. We conclude that an SIDM model must have a very high velocity-dependent cross-section in order to match all satellites, and that WDM offers a marginally better fit than CDM to the MW satellite mass function., Comment: 23 pages, 14 figures, accepted by MNRAS. The spatial distribution of galaxies at sufficiently small scales will encode information about the identity of the dark matter. We develop a novel description of the halo distribution using persistent homology summaries, in which collections of points are decomposed into clusters, loops and voids. We apply these methods, together with a set of hypothesis tests, to dark matter haloes in MW-analog environment regions of the cold dark matter (CDM) and warm dark matter (WDM) Copernicus Complexio $N$-body cosmological simulations. The results of the hypothesis tests find statistically significant differences (p-values $\leq$ 0.001) between the CDM and WDM structures, and the functional summaries of persistence diagrams detect differences at scales that are distinct from the comparison spatial point process functional summaries considered (including the two-point correlation function). The differences between the models are driven most strongly at filtration scales $\sim100$~kpc, where CDM generates larger numbers of unconnected halo clusters while WDM instead generates loops. Dark matter models can be classified according to their impact on the properties of galaxies, including cold dark matter (CDM), warm dark matter (WDM), self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) and fuzzy dark matter (FDM). In celebration of April Fool's Day, and also of the 1-year anniversary of the start of the 2022 volcanic eruption at Fagradalsfjall here in Iceland, we explore fresh lava as a candidate for WDM specifically. We verify first hand that lava is indeed warm (exhibits free-streaming and retains temperature for several months after the eruption ends, is 1000K, sets fire to grass, can feel one's eyebrows singe at a distance of 4m) and dark once sufficiently decoupled from its source of production., Comment: April Fool's contribution envisaging fresh lava as warm dark matter. The spatial distribution of Milky Way (MW) subhaloes provides an important set of observables for testing cosmological models. These include the radial distribution of luminous satellites, planar configurations, and the abundance of dark subhaloes whose existence or absence is key to distinguishing amongst dark matter models. We use the COCO $N$-body simulations of cold dark matter (CDM) and 3.3keV thermal relic warm dark matter (WDM) to predict the satellite spatial distribution in the limit that the impact of baryonic physics is minimal. We demonstrate that the radial distributions of CDM and 3.3keV-WDM luminous satellites are identical if the minimum pre-infall halo mass to form a galaxy is $>10^{8.5}\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$. The distribution of dark subhaloes is significantly more concentrated in WDM due to the absence of low mass, recently accreted substructures that typically inhabit the outer parts of a MW halo in CDM. We show that subhaloes of mass $[10^{7},10^{8}]\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ and within 30kpc of the centre are the stripped remnants of larger haloes in both models. Therefore their abundance in WDM is $3\times$ higher than one would anticipate from the overall WDM subhalo population. We estimate that differences between CDM and WDM concentration-mass relations can be probed for subhalo-stream impact parameters $<2$kpc. Finally, we find that the impact of WDM on planes of satellites is likely negligible. The satellite galaxies of the Milky Way (MW) are effective probes of the underlying dark matter (DM) substructure, which is sensitive to the nature of the DM particle. In particular, a class of DM models have a power spectrum cut-off on the mass scale of dwarf galaxies and thus predict only small numbers of substructures below the cut-off mass. This makes the MW satellite system appealing to constrain the DM properties: feasible models must produce enough substructure to host the number of observed Galactic satellites. Here, we compare theoretical predictions of the abundance of DM substructure in thermal relic warm DM (WDM) models with estimates of the total satellite population of the MW. This produces conservative robust lower limits on the allowed mass, $m_\mathrm{th}$, of the thermal relic WDM particle. As the abundance of satellite galaxies depends on the MW halo mass, we marginalize over the corresponding uncertainties and rule out $m_\mathrm{th} \leq 2.02\, \mathrm{keV}$ at 95 per cent confidence independently of assumptions about galaxy formation processes. Modelling some of these - in particular, the effect of reionization, which suppresses the formation of dwarf galaxies - strengthens our constraints on the DM properties and excludes models with $m_\mathrm{th} \leq 3.99\, \mathrm{keV}$ in our fiducial model. We also find that thermal relic models cannot produce enough satellites if the MW halo mass is $M_{200}\leq 0.6\times 10^{12}\, \mathrm{M_\odot}$, which imposes a lower limit on the MW halo mass in CDM. It has been proposed that gravothermal collapse due to dark matter self-interactions (i.e. self-interacting dark matter, SIDM) can explain the observed diversity of the Milky Way (MW) satellites' central dynamical masses. We investigate the process behind this hypothesis using an $N$-body simulation of a MW-analogue halo with velocity dependent self-interacting dark matter (vdSIDM) in which the low velocity self-scattering cross-section, $\sigma_{T}/m_{x}$, reaches 100 cm$^{2}$g$^{-1}$; we dub this model the vd100 model. We compare the results of this simulation to simulations of the same halo that employ different dark models, including cold dark matter (CDM) and other, less extreme SIDM models. The masses of the vd100 haloes are very similar to their CDM counterparts, but the values of their maximum circular velocities, $V_{max}$, are significantly higher. We determine that these high $V_{max}$ subhaloes were objects in the mass range [$5\times10^{6}$, $1\times10^{8}$] $M_\odot$ at $z=1$ that undergo gravothermal core collapse. These collapsed haloes have density profiles that are described by single power laws down to the resolution limit of the simulation, and the inner slope of this density profile is approximately $-3$. Studies of flux anomalies statistics and perturbations in stellar streams have the potential to constrain models of warm dark matter (WDM), including sterile neutrinos. Producing these constraints requires a parametrization of the WDM mass function relative to that of the cold dark matter (CDM) equivalent. We use five WDM models with half-mode masses, $M_\mathrm{hm}=[1.3,35]\times10^{8}$~$M_{\odot}$, spread across simulations of the Local Group, lensing ellipticals and the $z=2$ universe, to generate such a parametrization: we fit parameters to a functional form for the WDM-to-CDM halo mass function ratio, $n_\mathrm{WDM}(M_{X})/n_\mathrm{CDM}(M_{X})$, of ($1+(\alpha M_\mathrm{hm}/M_{X})^{\beta})^{\gamma}$. For $M_{X}\equiv$ virial mass of central halos we obtain $\alpha=2.3$, $\beta=0.8$, and $\gamma=-1.0$, and this fit is steeper than the extended Press-Schechter formalism predicts. For $M_{X}\equiv$ mass of subhalos we instead obtain $\alpha=4.2$, $\beta=2.5$ and $\gamma=-0.2$; in both mass definitions the scatter is $\sim20$~per~cent. The second fit typically underestimates the relative abundance of $z=2$ WDM subhaloes at the tens of per cent level. The nature of the dark matter can affect the collapse time of dark matter haloes, and can therefore be imprinted in observables such as the stellar population ages and star formation histories of dwarf galaxies. In this paper we use high resolution hydrodynamical simulations of Local Group-analogue (LG) volumes in cold dark matter (CDM), sterile neutrino warm dark matter (WDM) and self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) models with the EAGLE galaxy formation code to study how galaxy formation times change with dark matter model. We are able to identify the same haloes in different simulations, since they share the same initial density field phases. We find that the stellar mass of galaxies depends systematically on resolution, and can differ by as much as a factor of two in haloes of a given dark matter mass. The evolution of the stellar populations in SIDM is largely identical to that of CDM, but in WDM early star formation is instead suppressed. The time at which LG haloes can begin to form stars through atomic cooling is delayed by $\sim$200~Myr in WDM models compared to CDM. It will be necessary to measure stellar ages of old populations to a precision of better than 100~Myr, and to address degeneracies with the redshift of reionization -- and potentially other baryonic processes -- in order to use these observables to distinguish between dark matter models., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures. We use a compilation of disc galaxy rotation curves to assess the role of the luminous component ("baryons") in the rotation curve diversity problem. As in earlier work, we find that rotation curve shape correlates with baryonic surface density: high surface density galaxies have rapidly-rising rotation curves consistent with cuspy cold dark matter halos; slowly-rising rotation curves (characteristic of galaxies with inner mass deficits or "cores") occur only in low surface density galaxies. The correlation, however, seems too weak to be the main driver of the diversity. In addition, dwarf galaxies exhibit a clear trend, from "cuspy" systems where baryons are unimportant in the inner mass budget to "cored" galaxies where baryons actually dominate. This trend constrains the various scenarios proposed to explain the diversity, such as (i) baryonic inflows and outflows during galaxy formation; (ii) dark matter self-interactions; (iii) variations in the baryonic mass structure coupled to rotation velocities through the "mass discrepancy-acceleration relation" (MDAR); or (iv) non-circular motions in gaseous discs. Together with analytical modeling and cosmological hydrodynamical simulations, our analysis shows that each of these scenarios has promising features, but none seems to fully account for the observed diversity. The MDAR, in particular, is inconsistent with the observed trend between rotation curve shape and baryonic importance; either the trend is caused by systematic errors in the data or the MDAR does not apply. Milky Way (MW) satellites reside within dark matter (DM) subhalos with a broad distribution of circular velocity profiles. This diversity is enhanced with the inclusion of ultra-faint satellites, which seemingly have very high DM densities, albeit with large systematic uncertainties. We argue that if confirmed, this large diversity in the MW satellite population poses a serious test for the structure formation theory with possible implications for the DM nature. For the Cold Dark Matter model, the diversity might be a signature of the combined effects of subhalo tidal disruption by the MW disk and strong supernova feedback. For models with a dwarf-scale cutoff in the power spectrum, the diversity is a consequence of the lower abundance of dwarf-scale halos. This diversity is most challenging for Self-Interacting Dark Matter (SIDM) models with cross sections $\sigma/m_\chi\gtrsim1~$cm$^2$g$^{-1}$ where subhalos have too low densities to explain the ultra-faint galaxies. We propose a novel solution to explain the diversity of MW satellites based on the gravothermal collapse of SIDM haloes. This solution requires a velocity-dependent cross section that predicts a bimodal distribution of cuspy dense (collapsed) subhaloes consistent with the ultra-faint satellites, and cored lower density subhaloes consistent with the brighter satellites., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review D

The nearby Perseus galaxy cluster is a key target for indirect detection searches for decaying dark matter. We use the C-EAGLE simulations of galaxy clusters to predict the flux, width and shape of a dark matter decay line, paying particular attention to the unexplained 3.55keV line detected in the spectra of some galaxies and clusters, and the upcoming XRISM X-ray observatory mission. We show that the line width in C-EAGLE clusters similar to Perseus is typically [600-800]$\mathrm{kms^{-1}}$, and therefore narrower than the amplitude of the velocity dispersion of galaxies in the cluster. Haloes that are significantly disturbed can, however, exhibit galaxy velocity dispersions higher than $1000\mathrm{kms^{-1}}$, and in this case will show a large difference between the line profiles of on- and off-center observations. We show that the line profile is likely to be slightly asymmetric, but still well approximated by a Gaussian at the 10% level, and that the halo asymmetry can lead to fluxes that vary by a factor of two. In summary, we predict that, if the previously reported 3.55keV line detections do originate from dark matter decay, the XRISM mission will detect a line with a roughly Gaussian profile at a rest frame energy of 3.55keV, with a width $>600\mathrm{kms^{-1}}$ and flux approximately in the range $[4-9]\times10^{-8}\mathrm{counts/sec/cm^{2}}$., Comment: 6 pages and 3 figures, plus 5 pages and 6 figures in supplemental material. A cutoff in the linear matter power spectrum at dwarf galaxy scales has been shown to affect the abundance, formation mechanism and age of dwarf haloes and their galaxies at high and low redshift. We use hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy formation within the ETHOS framework in a benchmark model that has such a cutoff, and that has been shown to be an alternative to the cold dark matter (CDM) model that alleviates its dwarf-scale challenges. We show how galaxies in this model form differently to CDM on a halo-by-halo basis, at redshifts $z\ge6$. We show that ETHOS haloes at the half-mode mass scale form with 50~per~cent less mass than their CDM counterparts due to their later formation times, yet they retain more of their gas reservoir due to the different behaviour of gas and dark matter during the monolithic collapse of the first haloes in models with a galactic-scale cutoff. As a result, galaxies in ETHOS haloes near the cutoff scale grow rapidly between $z=10-6$ and by $z=6$ end up having very similar stellar masses, higher gas fractions and higher star formation rates relative to their CDM counterparts. We highlight these differences by making predictions for how the number of galaxies with old stellar populations is suppressed in ETHOS for both $z=6$ galaxies and for gas-poor Local Group fossil galaxies. Dark matter particles may decay, emitting photons. Drawing on the EAGLE family of hydrodynamic simulations of galaxy formation -- including the APOSTLE and C-EAGLE simulations -- we assess the systematic uncertainties and scatter on the decay flux from different galaxy classes, from Milky Way satellites to galaxy clusters, and compare our results to studies of the 3.55~keV line. We demonstrate that previous detections and non-detections of this line are consistent with a dark matter interpretation. For example, in our simulations the width of the the dark matter decay line for Perseus-analogue galaxy clusters lies in the range 1300-1700~\kms. Therefore, the non-detection of the 3.55~keV line in the centre of the Perseus cluster by the {\it Hitomi} collaboration is consistent with detections by other instruments. We also consider trends with stellar and halo mass and evaluate the scatter in the expected fluxes arising from the anisotropic halo mass distribution and from object-to-object variations. We provide specific predictions for observations with {\it XMM-Newton} and with the planned X-ray telescopes {\it XRISM} and {\it ATHENA}. If future detections of unexplained X-ray lines match our predictions, including line widths, we will have strong evidence that we have discovered the dark matter., Comment: 20 pages, 16 Figures. We use the IllustrisTNG (TNG) cosmological simulations to provide theoretical expectations for the dark matter mass fractions (DMFs) and circular velocity profiles of galaxies. TNG predicts flat circular velocity curves for $z = 0$ Milky Way (MW)-like galaxies beyond a few kpc from the galaxy centre, in better agreement with observational constraints than its predecessor, Illustris. TNG also predicts an enhancement of the dark matter mass within the 3D stellar half-mass radius ($r_\mathrm{half}$; $M_\mathrm{200c} = 10^{10}-10^{13}\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$, $z \le2$) compared to its dark matter only and Illustris counterparts. This enhancement leads TNG present-day galaxies to be dominated by dark matter within their inner regions, with $f_\mathrm{DM}(

We contrast predictions for the high-redshift galaxy population and reionization history between cold dark matter (CDM) and an alternative self-interacting dark matter model based on the recently developed ETHOS framework that alleviates the small-scale CDM challenges within the Local Group. We perform the highest resolution hydrodynamical cosmological simulations (a 36~Mpc$^3$ volume with gas cell mass of $\sim10^5\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ and minimum gas softening of $\sim180$~pc) within ETHOS to date -- plus a CDM counterpart -- to quantify the abundance of galaxies at high redshift and their impact on reionization. We find that ETHOS predicts galaxies with higher ultraviolet (UV) luminosities than their CDM counterparts and a faster build-up of the faint end of the UV luminosity function. These effects, however, make the optical depth to reionization less sensitive to the power spectrum cut-off: the ETHOS model differs from the CDM $\tau$ value by only 10 per cent and is consistent with Planck limits if the effective escape fraction of UV photons is 0.1-0.5. We conclude that current observations of high-redshift luminosity functions cannot differentiate between ETHOS and CDM models, but deep JWST surveys of strongly-lensed, inherently faint galaxies have the potential to test non-CDM models that offer attractive solutions to CDM's Local Group problems., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, version accepted for MNRAS publication. We use a pair of high resolution N-body simulations implementing two dark matter models, namely the standard cold dark matter (CDM) cosmogony and a warm dark matter (WDM) alternative where the dark matter particle is a 1.5keV thermal relic. We combine these simulations with the GALFORM semi-analytical galaxy formation model in order to explore differences between the resulting galaxy populations. We use GALFORM model variants for CDM and WDM that result in the same z=0 galaxy stellar mass function by construction. We find that most of the studied galaxy properties have the same values in these two models, indicating that both dark matter scenarios match current observational data equally well. Even in under-dense regions, where discrepancies in structure formation between CDM and WDM are expected to be most pronounced, the galaxy properties are only slightly different. The only significant difference in the local universe we find is in the galaxy populations of "Local Volumes", regions of radius 1 to 8Mpc around simulated Milky Way analogues. In such regions our WDM model provides a better match to observed local galaxy number counts and is five times more likely than the CDM model to predict sub-regions within them that are as empty as the observed Local Void. Thus, a highly complete census of the Local Volume and future surveys of void regions could provide constraints on the nature of dark matter., Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures, accepted by MNRAS

We study galaxy formation in sterile neutrino dark matter models that differ signifi- cantly from both cold and from `warm thermal relic' models. We use the EAGLE code to carry out hydrodynamic simulations of the evolution of pairs of galaxies chosen to resemble the Local Group, as part of the APOSTLE simulations project. We compare cold dark matter (CDM) with two sterile neutrino models with 7 keV mass: one, the warmest among all models of this mass (LA120) and the other, a relatively cold case (LA10). We show that the lower concentration of sterile neutrino subhalos compared to their CDM counterparts makes the inferred inner dark matter content of galaxies like Fornax (or Magellanic Clouds) less of an outlier in the sterile neutrino cosmologies. In terms of the galaxy number counts the LA10 simulations are indistinguishable from CDM when one takes into account halo-to-halo (or `simulation-to-simulation') scatter. In order for the LA120 model to match the number of Local Group dwarf galaxies, a higher fraction of low mass haloes is required to form galaxies than is predicted by the EAGLE simulations. N-body dark matter simulations of structure formation in the $\Lambda$CDM model predict a population of subhalos within Galactic halos that have higher central densities than inferred for satellites of the Milky Way, a tension known as the `too big to fail' problem. Proposed solutions include baryonic effects, a smaller mass for the Milky Way halo, and warm dark matter. We test these three possibilities using a semi-analytic model of galaxy formation to generate luminosity functions for Milky Way halo-analogue satellite populations, the results of which are then coupled to the Jiang & van den Bosch model of subhalo stripping to predict the subhalo $V_\mathrm{max}$ functions for the 10 brightest satellites. We find that selecting the brightest satellites (as opposed to the most massive) and modelling the expulsion of gas by supernovae at early times increases the likelihood of generating the observed Milky Way satellite $V_\mathrm{max}$ function. The preferred halo mass is $6\times10^{11}M_{\odot}$, which has a 14 percent probability to host a $V_\mathrm{max}$ function like that of the Milky Way satellites. This probability is reduced to 8 percent for a $1.0\times10^{12}M_{\odot}$ halo and to 3 percent for a $1.4\times10^{12}M_{\odot}$ halo. We conclude that the Milky Way satellite $V_\mathrm{max}$ function is compatible with a CDM cosmology, as previously found by Sawala et al. using hydrodynamic simulations. Sterile neutrino-warm dark matter models achieve a higher degree of agreement with the observations, with a maximum 35 percent chance of generating the observed Milky Way satellite $V_\mathrm{max}$ function. We investigate the process of reionisation in a model in which the dark matter is a warm elementary particle such as a sterile neutrino. We focus on models that are consistent with the dark matter decay interpretation of the recently detected line at 3.5 keV in the X-ray spectra of galaxies and clusters. In warm dark matter models the primordial spectrum of density perturbations has a cut-off on the scale of dwarf galaxies. Structure formation therefore begins later than in the standard cold dark matter (CDM) model and very few objects form below the cut-off mass scale. To calculate the number of ionising photons, we use the Durham semi-analytic model of galaxy formation, GALFORM. We find that even the most extreme 7 keV sterile neutrino we consider is able to reionise the Universe early enough to be compatible with the bounds on the epoch of reionisation from Planck. This, perhaps surprising, result arises from the rapid build-up of high redshift galaxies in the sterile neutrino models which is also reflected in a faster evolution of their far-UV luminosity function between $10>z>7$ than in CDM. The dominant sources of ionising photons are systematically more massive in the sterile neutrino models than in CDM. As a consistency check on the models, we calculate the present-day luminosity function of satellites of Milky Way-like galaxies. We use the Copernicus Complexio (COCO) high resolution $N$-body simulations to investigate differences in the properties of small-scale structures in the standard cold dark matter (CDM) model and in a model with a cutoff in the initial power spectrum of density fluctuations consistent with both a thermally produced warm dark matter (WDM) particle or a sterile neutrino with mass 7 keV and leptogenesis parameter $L_6=8.7$. The latter corresponds to the "coldest" model with this sterile neutrino mass compatible with the identification of the recently detected 3.5 keV X-ray line as resulting from particle decay. CDM and WDM predict very different number densities of subhaloes with mass $\leq 10^9\,h^{-1}\,M_\odot$ although they predict similar, nearly universal, normalised subhalo radial density distributions. Haloes and subhaloes in both models have cuspy NFW profiles, but WDM subhaloes below the cutoff scale in the power spectrum (corresponding to maximum circular velocities $V_{\mathrm{max}}^{z=0} \leq50~\mathrm{kms}^{-1}$) are less concentrated than their CDM counterparts. We make predictions for observable properties using the GALFORM semi-analytic model of galaxy formation. Both models predict Milky Way satellite luminosity functions consistent with observations, although the WDM model predicts fewer very faint satellites. This model, however, predicts slightly more UV bright galaxies at redshift $z>7$ than CDM, but both are consistent with observations. The sterile neutrino is a viable dark matter candidate that can be produced in the early Universe via non-equilibrium processes, and would therefore possess a highly non-thermal spectrum of primordial velocities. In this paper we analyse the process of structure formation with this class of dark matter particles. To this end we construct primordial dark matter power spectra as a function of the lepton asymmetry, $L_6$, that is present in the primordial plasma and leads to resonant sterile neutrino production. We compare these power spectra with those of thermally produced dark matter particles and show that resonantly produced sterile neutrinos are much colder than their thermal relic counterparts. We also demonstrate that the shape of these power spectra is not determined by the free-streaming scale alone. We then use the power spectra as an input for semi-analytic models of galaxy formation in order to predict the number of luminous satellite galaxies in a Milky Way-like halo. By assuming that the mass of the Milky Way halo must be no more than $2\times10^{12}M_{\odot}$ (the adopted upper bound based on current astronomical observations) we are able to constrain the value of $L_6$ for $M_s\le 8$~keV. We also show that the range of $L_6$ that is in best agreement with the 3.5~keV line (if produced by decays of 7~keV sterile neutrino) requires that the Milky Way halo has a mass no smaller than $1.5\times10^{12}M_{\odot}$. Finally, we compare the power spectra obtained by direct integration of the Boltzmann equations for a non-resonantly produced sterile neutrino with the fitting formula of Viel~et~al. and find that the latter significantly underestimates the power amplitude on scales relevant to satellite galaxies., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS, 15 pages 14 Figures

We use cosmological simulations to identify dark matter subhalo host candidates of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy using the stellar kinematic properties of Fornax. We consider cold dark matter (CDM), warm dark matter (WDM), and decaying dark matter (DDM) simulations for our models of structure formation. The subhalo candidates in CDM typically have smaller mass and higher concentrations at z = 0 than the corresponding candidates in WDM and DDM. We examine the formation histories of the ~ 100 Fornax candidate subhalos identified in CDM simulations and, using approximate luminosity-mass relationships for subhalos, we find two of these subhalos that are consistent with both the Fornax luminosity and kinematics. These two subhalos have a peak mass over ten times larger than their z = 0 mass. We suggest that in CDM the dark matter halo hosting Fornax must have been severely stripped of mass and that it had an infall time into the Milky Way of ~ 9 Gyr ago. In WDM, we find that candidate subhalos consistent with the properties of Fornax have a similar infall time and a similar degree of mass loss, while in DDM we find a later infall time of ~ 3 - 4 Gyr ago and significantly less mass loss. We discuss these results in the context of the Fornax star formation history, and show that these predicted subhalo infall times can be linked to different star formation quenching mechanisms. The recent detection of a 3.5 keV X-ray line from the centres of galaxies and clusters by Bulbul et al. (2014a) and Boyarsky et al. (2014a) has been interpreted as emission from the decay of 7 keV sterile neutrinos which could make up the (warm) dark matter (WDM). As part of the COpernicus COmplexio (COCO) programme, we investigate the properties of dark matter haloes formed in a high-resolution cosmological $N$-body simulation from initial conditions similar to those expected in a universe in which the dark matter consists of 7 keV sterile neutrinos. This simulation and its cold dark matter (CDM) counterpart have $\sim13.4$bn particles, each of mass $\sim 10^5\, h^{-1} M_\odot$, providing detailed information about halo structure and evolution down to dwarf galaxy mass scales. Non-linear structure formation on small scales ($M_{200}\, \leq\, 2 \times 10^9\,h^{-1}\,M_\odot$) begins slightly later in COCO-Warm than in COCO-Cold. The halo mass function at the present day in the WDM model begins to drop below its CDM counterpart at a mass $\sim 2 \times 10^{9}\,h^{-1}\,M_\odot$ and declines very rapidly towards lower masses so that there are five times fewer haloes of mass $M_{200}= 10^{8}\,h^{-1}\,M_\odot$ in COCO-Warm than in COCO-Cold. Halo concentrations on dwarf galaxy scales are correspondingly smaller in COCO-Warm, and we provide a simple functional form that describes its evolution with redshift. Recent studies of M31, the Galactic centre, and galaxy clusters have made tentative detections of an X-ray line at ~3.5 keV that could be produced by decaying dark matter. We use high resolution simulations of the Aquarius project to predict the likely amplitude of the X-ray decay flux observed in the GC relative to that observed in M31, and also of the GC relative to other parts of the Milky Way halo and to dwarf spheroidal galaxies. We show that the reported detections from M31 and Andromeda are compatible with each other, and with upper limits arising from high galactic latitude observations, and imply a decay time {\tau} ~10^28 seconds. We argue that this interpretation can be tested with deep observations of dwarf spheroidal galaxies: in 95 per cent of our mock observations, a 1.3 Msec pointed observation of Draco with XMM-Newton will enable us to discover or rule out at the 3{\sigma} level an X-ray feature from dark matter decay at 3.5 keV, for decay times {\tau} < 0.8x10^28 sec., Comment: 15 pages, 14 figures. Well-motivated elementary particle candidates for the dark matter, such as the sterile neutrino, behave as warm dark matter (WDM).For particle masses of order a keV, free streaming produces a cutoff in the linear fluctuation power spectrum at a scale corresponding to dwarf galaxies. We investigate the abundance and structure of WDM haloes and subhaloes on these scales using high resolution cosmological N-body simulations of galactic haloes of mass similar to the Milky Way's. On scales larger than the free-streaming cutoff, the initial conditions have the same power spectrum and phases as one of the cold dark matter (CDM) haloes previously simulated by Springel et al as part of the Virgo consortium Aquarius project. We have simulated four haloes with WDM particle masses in the range 1.4-2.3keV and, for one case, we have carried out further simulations at varying resolution. N-body simulations in which the power spectrum cutoff is resolved are known to undergo artificial fragmentation in filaments producing spurious clumps which, for small masses (<10^7Msun in our case) outnumber genuine haloes. We have developed a robust algorithm to identify these spurious objects and remove them from our halo catalogues. We find that the WDM subhalo mass function is suppressed by well over an order magnitude relative to the CDM case for masses <10^9Msun. Requiring that there should be at least as many subhaloes as there are observed satellites in the Milky Way leads to a conservative lower limit to the (thermal equivalent) WDM particle mass of ~1.5\rmn{keV}. WDM haloes and subhaloes have cuspy density distributions that are well described by NFW or Einasto profiles.
