Recent experiments suggest a new paradigm towards novel colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) in a family of materials EuM$_2$X$_2$(M=Cd, In, Zn; X=P, As), distinct from the traditional avenues involving Kondo-RKKY crossovers, magnetic phase transitions with structural distortions, or topological phase transitions. Here, we use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations to explore their origin, particularly focusing on EuCd$_2$P$_2$. While the low-energy spectral weight royally tracks that of the resistivity anomaly near the temperature with maximum magnetoresistance (T$_{MR}$) as expected from transport-spectroscopy correspondence, the spectra are completely incoherent and strongly suppressed with no hint of a Landau quasiparticle. Using systematic material and temperature dependence investigation complemented by theory, we attribute this non-quasiparticle caricature to the strong presence of entangled magnetic and lattice interactions, a characteristic enabled by the $p$-$f$ mixing. Given the known presence of ferromagnetic clusters, this naturally points to the origin of CMR being the scattering of spin-polarized polarons at the boundaries of ferromagnetic clusters. These results are not only illuminating to investigate the strong correlations and topology in EuCd$_2$X$_2$ family, but, in a broader view, exemplify how multiple cooperative interactions can give rise to extraordinary behaviors in condensed matter systems.

Spin- and charge-lattice interactions are potential key factors in the microscopic mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity in cuprates. Although both interactions can dramatically shape the low-energy electronic structure, their phenomenological roles in superconductivity are usually investigated independently. Employing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we reveal the spectroscopic fingerprint of short-range antiferromagnetic order in conjunction with enhanced electron-phonon interaction in the electron-doped cuprate superconductor $\mathrm{Nd_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_4}$. The observed mode coupling exhibits a strong momentum dependence that is in striking contrast to the node-antinode dichotomy previously observed in the hole-doped cuprates. Our results reveal an intimate relationship between electron-phonon coupling and antiferromagnetic fluctuations, which collectively sets the stage for unconventional superconductivity in the electron-doped cuprates.

Recent studies of La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ have identified a bilayer (2222) structure and an unexpected alternating monolayer-trilayer (1313) structure, both of which feature signatures of superconductivity near 80 K under high pressures. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we measure the electronic structure of 1313 samples. In contrast to the previously studied 2222 structure, we find that the 1313 structure hosts a flat band with a markedly different binding energy, as well as an additional electron pocket and band splittings. By comparison to local-density approximation calculations, we find renormalizations of the Ni-$d_{z^2}$ and Ni-$d_{x^2-y^2}$ derived bands to be about 5 to 7 and about 4 respectively, suggesting strong correlation effects. These results reveal important differences in the electronic structure brought about by the distinct structural motifs with the same stoichiometry. Such differences may be relevant to the putative high temperature superconductivity., Comment: Version 2: Improved data quality of the small electron pocket at the zone center ($\epsilon$ band). In the underdoped n-type cuprate Nd2-xCexCuO4, long-ranged antiferromagnetic order reconstructs the Fermi surface, resulting in a putative antiferromagnetic metal with small pockets. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we observe an anomalous energy gap, an order of magnitude smaller than the antiferromagnetic gap, in a wide range of the underdoped regime and smoothly connecting to the superconducting gap at optimal doping. After carefully considering all the known ordering tendencies in tandem with the phase diagram, we hypothesize that the normal state gap in the underdoped n-type cuprates originates from Cooper pairing. The high temperature scale of the normal state gap raises the prospect of engineering higher transition temperatures in the n-type cuprates comparable to that of the p-type cuprates.

During a band-gap-tuned semimetal-to-semiconductor transition, Coulomb attraction between electrons and holes can cause spontaneously formed excitons near the zero-band-gap point, or the Lifshitz transition point. This has become an important route to realize bulk excitonic insulators -- an insulating ground state distinct from single-particle band insulators. How this route manifests from weak to strong coupling is not clear. In this work, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and high-resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction (XRD), we investigate the broken symmetry state across the semimetal-to-semiconductor transition in a leading bulk excitonic insulator candidate system Ta2Ni(Se,S)5. A broken symmetry phase is found to be continuously suppressed from the semimetal side to the semiconductor side, contradicting the anticipated maximal excitonic instability around the Lifshitz transition. Bolstered by first-principles and model calculations, we find strong interband electron-phonon coupling to play a crucial role in the enhanced symmetry breaking on the semimetal side of the phase diagram. Our results not only provide insight into the longstanding debate of the nature of intertwined orders in Ta2NiSe5, but also establish a basis for exploring band-gap-tuned structural and electronic instabilities in strongly coupled systems., Comment: 27 pages, 4 + 9 figures

In contrast to hole-doped cuprates, electron-doped cuprates consistently exhibit strong antiferromagnetic correlations with a commensurate ({\pi}, {\pi}) ordering wave vector, leading to the prevalent belief that antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations mediate Cooper pairing in these unconventional superconductors. However, early investigations produced two paradoxical findings: while antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations create the largest pseudogap at "hot spots" in momentum space, Raman scattering and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements using the leading-edge method seem to suggest the superconducting gap is also maximized at these locations. This presented a dilemma for spin-fluctuation-mediated pairing: Cooper pairing is strongest at momenta where normal state low energy spectral weight is most suppressed. Here we investigate this dilemma in Nd2-xCexCuO4 using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy under significantly improved experimental conditions. The unprecedented signal-to-noise ratio and resolution allow us to directly observe the Bogoliubov quasiparticles, demonstrating the existence and importance of two sectors of states: 1. The reconstructed main band and the states gapped by the antiferromagnetic pseudogap around the hot spots. 2. The gossamer Fermi surface states with distinct dispersion inside the pseudogap, from which Bogoliubov quasiparticle coherence peaks emerge below Tc. Supported by numerical results, we propose that the non-zero modulus of the antiferromagnetic order parameter causes the former, while fluctuations in the antiferromagnetic order parameter orientation are responsible for the latter. Our revelations of the gossamer Fermi surface reconcile the paradoxical observations, deepening our understanding of superconductivity in electron-doped cuprates in particular, and unconventional superconductivity in general., Comment: Submitted version 30 pages, 4 main figures, 8 extended data figures. The three-dimensional electronic structure and the nature of Ce 4f electrons of the Kondo insulator CeRu4Sn6 are investigated by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, utilizing tunable photon energies. Our results reveal (i) the three-dimensional k-space nature of the Fermi surface, (ii) the localized-to-itinerant transition of f electrons occurs at a much high temperature than the hybridization gap opening temperature, and (iii) the "relocalization" of itinerant f electrons below 25 K, which could be the precursor to the establishment of magnetic order., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Hysteresis underlies a large number of phase transitions in solids, giving rise to exotic metastable states that are otherwise inaccessible. Here, we report an unconventional hysteretic transition in a quasi-2D material, EuTe4. By combining transport, photoemission, diffraction, and x-ray absorption measurements, we observed that the hysteresis loop has a temperature width of more than 400 K, setting a record among crystalline solids. The transition has an origin distinct from known mechanisms, lying entirely within the incommensurate charge-density-wave (CDW) phase of EuTe4 with no change in the CDW modulation periodicity. We interpret the hysteresis as an unusual switching of the relative CDW phases in different layers, a phenomenon unique to quasi-2D compounds that is not present in either purely 2D or strongly-coupled 3D systems. Our findings challenge the established theories on metastable states in density wave systems, pushing the boundary of understanding hysteretic transitions in a broken-symmetry state.

Fluctuating superconductivity - vestigial Cooper pairing in the resistive state of a material - is usually associated with low dimensionality, strong disorder or low carrier density. Here, we report single particle spectroscopic, thermodynamic and magnetic evidence for persistent superconducting fluctuations in heavily hole-doped cuprate superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$ ($T_c$ = 66~K) despite the high carrier density. With a sign-problem free quantum Monte Carlo calculation, we show how a partially flat band at ($\pi$,0) can help enhance superconducting phase fluctuations. Quantum well states appear in metallic thin films due to the confinement of the wave function by the film interfaces. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we unexpectedly observe quantum well states in fractured single crystals of CeCoIn$_5$. We confirm that confinement occurs by showing that these states' binding energies are photon-energy independent and are well described with a phase accumulation model, commonly applied to quantum well states in thin films. This indicates that atomically flat thin films can be formed by fracturing hard single crystals. For the two samples studied, our observations are explained by free-standing flakes with thicknesses of 206 and 101 \r{A}. We extend our analysis to extract bulk properties of CeCoIn$_5$. Specifically, we obtain the dispersion of a three-dimensional band near the zone center along in-plane and out-of-plane momenta. We establish part of its Fermi surface, which corresponds to a hole pocket centered at $\Gamma$. We also reveal a change of its dispersion with temperature, a signature that may be caused by the Kondo hybridization., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

The resistance of a conventional insulator diverges as temperature approaches zero. The peculiar low temperature resistivity saturation in the 4f Kondo insulator (KI) SmB6 has spurred proposals of a correlation-driven topological Kondo insulator (TKI) with exotic ground states. However, the scarcity of model TKI material families leaves difficulties in disentangling key ingredients from irrelevant details. Here we use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to study FeSb2, a correlated d-electron KI candidate that also exhibits a low temperature resistivity saturation. On the (010) surface, we find a rich assemblage of metallic states with two-dimensional dispersion. Measurements of the bulk band structure reveal band renormalization, a large temperature-dependent band shift, and flat spectral features along certain high symmetry directions, providing spectroscopic evidence for strong correlations. Our observations suggest that exotic insulating states resembling those in SmB6 and YbB12 may also exist in systems with d instead of f electrons.

Substrate engineering provides an opportunity to modulate the physical properties of quantum materials in thin film form. Here we report that TiSe$_2$ thin films grown on TiO$_2$ have unexpectedly large electron doping that suppresses the charge density wave (CDW) order. This is dramatically different from either bulk single crystal TiSe$_2$ or TiSe$_2$ thin films on graphene. The epitaxial TiSe$_2$ thin films can be prepared on TiO$_2$ via molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) in two ways: by conventional co-deposition using selenium and titanium sources, and by evaporating only selenium on reconstructed TiO$_2$ surfaces. Both growth methods yield atomically flat thin films with similar physical properties. The electron doping and subsequent suppression of CDW order can be explained by selenium vacancies in the TiSe$_2$ film, which naturally occur when TiO$_2$ substrates are used. This is due to the stronger interfacial bonding that changes the ideal growth conditions. Our finding provides a way to tune the chemical potential of chalcogenide thin films via substrate selection and engineering., Comment: 4 figures

We report a persistent low-energy phonon broadening around $q_{B} \sim 0.28$ r.l.u. along the Cu-O bond direction in the high-$T_c$ cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$ (Bi-2212). We show that such broadening exists both inside and outside the conventional charge density wave (CDW) phase, via temperature dependent measurements in both underdoped and heavily overdoped samples. Combining inelastic hard x-ray scattering, diffuse scattering, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, and resonant soft x-ray scattering at the Cu $L_3$-edge, we exclude the presence of a CDW in the heavily overdoped Bi-2212 similar to that observed in the underdoped systems. Finally, we discuss the origin of such anisotropic low-energy phonon broadening, and its potential precursory role to the CDW phase in the underdoped region., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures
