Background: Osteitis fibrosa cystica is a rare, benign and osteolytic lesion attributed to hyperparathyroidism. The high level of parathyroid hormone cause rapid bone loss.Case Presentation: The patient is a 50-year-old male complaining of severe and persistent pain in the right knee joint. Imaging studies were suspicious for a benign tumor in the right distal femur. Biopsy under CT guidance showed numerous osteoclast aggregation and hemosiderin deposition around the bone trabeculae. Blood tests disclosed significantly elevated parathyroid hormone, serum calcium, serum alkaline phosphatase. Parathyroid ultrasonography and CT scan showed a solid mass in front of the trachea at the thoracic entrance plane. After resection of the mass, the clinical symptoms were relieved and the radiological results were significantly improved, which further confirmed the diagnosis.Conclusions: Metabolic diseases-associated bone lesions require a comprehensive diagnosis of multiple inspection items. An interprofessional team approach to the diagnosis and treatment of osteitis fibrosa cystica will provide the best outcome. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To improve the properties of polyamide 6 (PA6) composites, a series of modified PA6 composites was prepared by reaction extrusion. An amorphous PA6 was first obtained by the complexing reaction of Li+ in lithium chloride with amino groups, and then epoxy resins, nano-SiO2 as well as POE- g-MAH were in turn added into the PA6/LiCl system. The effect of different additives on the crystallization behavior and mechanical properties of PA6 composites was well-studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and mechanical properties tests. The results demonstrated that PA6 was amorphous at 6 phr lithium chloride and a network structure was formed in PA6 matrix in the presence of epoxy resins, thus the mechanical properties of composites greatly were enhanced. However too many nano-SiO2 particles might impair the tensile strength of PA6 composites. Additionally, a PA6 composite with excellent properties was obtained in the presence of POE- g-MAH due to the crystal form change in PA6 matrix and the strong interaction between PA6 and POE- g-MAH. Abstract: Cimetidine (CIM), a histamine-2-receptor antagonist, has a long history of safe use in gastric acid-mediated gastrointestinal disorders. In this study, we used CIM, as an adjuvant, with pEGFP-Sj26 GST (the recombinant plasmid containing enhanced green fluorescent protein gene and the gene encoding 26kDa glutathione S-transferase of Schistosoma japonicum) DNA vaccine to immunized mice and attempted to enhance the protective effect against S. japonicum. The results showed that the reduction rate of worm and egg burdens in the pEGFP-Sj26GST plus CIM group were 79.0% and 68.4%, respectively, significantly higher than that in pEGFP-Sj26GST alone group (27.0% and 22.5%, P <0.01). Compared with the pEGFP-Sj26GST alone group, mice immunized with pEGFP-Sj26GST plus CIM showed an elevated level of IFN-γ and IL-12 and a low level of IL-10 in splenocytes, while the levels of IL-4 and IL-5 showed no difference between the two groups. Our data also demonstrated that the percentage of CD4+CD25+ regulatory T cells (Tregs) was significantly decreased in the spleens of mice immunized with pEGFP-Sj26GST plus CIM. All these findings suggest that CIM as a potential schistosome DNA vaccine adjuvant can enhance the protective effect of pEGFP-Sj26GST vaccine. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

During the Cretaceous period of the northern Songliao Basin (northeast of China), a 100 m thick layer of fluvial-phase sandstone (Sifangtai Formation) with uranium potential was widely deposited, but its geochemical characteristics, paleoenvironment, and provenance remain unknown. This research proposes a new set of relevant geochemical data for sandstones to investigate their paleoenvironment, provenance and tectonic setting. The results revealed that: (1) The sandstone of the Sifangtai Formation was dominated by feldspar lithic sandstone. Geochemical signatures demonstrate that these sandstones have a high silicon content (SiO2 = 68.30~83.60 wt%) and total alkali content, but are poor in magnesium and calcium. They are also enriched in Rb, Th, U, K and LREE, and depleted HFSE (e.g., Nb, Ta), with crustal magmatic source. (2) The paleoclimate discriminant indicated that the rocks of the Sifangtai Formation might that the climate of Sifangtai Formation is semi-arid, and the chemical weathering of the source rocks is weak under the semi-arid climate environment. (3) The combination of element Sr/Ba, 100 MgO/Al2O3 and the combination of v/v + Ni, V/Cr, Ni/Co, and Sr/Cu indicated that the paleo-water medium was deposited in an oxygen-rich freshwater environment when the Sifangtai Formation was deposited. (4) The discriminate diagrams showed that almost all the sandstones of the Sifangtai Formation fell in the range of the active continental margin, indicating that the source area of the sandstones of Sifangtai Formations is an active continental margin tectonic environment, and the source is a felsic rock developed in the Xiaoxing'an Ridge and Zhangguangcailing area.
