Abstract

Since the start of full science operations from 2004, the Submillimeter Array has been implementing plans to expand IF bandwidths and upgrade receivers and cryostats. Metal mesh low-pass filters were designed to block infrared (IR) radiation to reduce the thermal load on the cryostats. Filters were fabricated on a quartz wafer through photolithography and coated with anti-reflection (AR) material. The filters were tested from 200 to 400 GHz to verify their passband performances. The measurement results were found to be in good agreement with EM simulation results. They were tested in the far-infrared (FIR) frequency range to verify out-of-band rejection. The IR reflectivity was found to be approximately 70%, which corresponded to the percentage of the area blocked by metal., Comment: 9pages, 14 figures

4. Generating Continuous Motion and Force Plans in Real-Time for Legged Mobile Manipulation

Abstract

Manipulators can be added to legged robots, allowing them to interact with and change their environment. Legged mobile manipulation planners must consider how contact forces generated by these manipulators affect the system. Current planning strategies either treat these forces as immutable during planning or are unable to optimize over these contact forces while operating in real-time. This paper presents the Stability and Task Oriented Receding-Horizon Motion and Manipulation Autonomous Planner (STORMMAP) that is able to generate continuous plans for the robot's motion and manipulation force trajectories that ensure dynamic feasibility and stability of the platform, and incentivizes accomplishing manipulation and motion tasks specified by a user. STORMMAP uses a nonlinear optimization problem to compute these plans and is able to run in real-time by assuming contact locations are given a-priori, either by a user or an external algorithm. A variety of simulated experiments on a quadruped with a manipulator mounted to its torso demonstrate the versatility of STORMMAP. In contrast to existing state of the art methods, the approach described in this paper generates continuous plans in under ten milliseconds, an order of magnitude faster than previous strategies.

Abstract

This paper proposes a generalized spring-loaded inverted pendulum (G-SLIP) model to explore various popular reduced-order dynamic models' characteristics and suggest a better robot leg design under specified performance indices. The G-SLIP model's composition can be varied by changing the model's parameters, such as ground contacting type and spring property. It can be transformed into four widely used models: the spring-loaded inverted pendulum (SLIP) model, the two-segment leg model, the SLIP with rolling foot model, and the rolling SLIP model. The effects of rolling contact and spring configuration on the dynamic behavior and fixed-point distribution of the G-SLIP model were analyzed, and the basins of attraction of the four described models were studied. By varying the parameters of the G-SLIP model, the dynamic behavior of the model can be optimized. Optimized for general locomotion running at various speeds, the model provided leg design guidelines. The leg was empirically fabricated and installed on the hexapod for experimental evaluation. The results indicated that the robot with a designed leg runs faster and is more power-efficient., (Creative Commons Attribution license.)
