3. A Low Profile Tunable Microwave Absorber based on Graphene Sandwich Structure and High Impedance Surface

Abstract

In this paper, a low profile dynamically tunable microwave absorber is proposed, which consists of high impedance surface (HIS) and graphene sandwich structure (GSS). We theoretically demonstrate and experimentally verify that the proposed absorber can provide a dynamically tunable reflection range from larger than -3dB to less than -30 dB (corresponding to the absorption range from 50% to 99.9%) at opera-ting frequency of 11.2GHz by external bias voltage. The entire thickness of this absorber is only 2.8mm, nearly one tenth of working wavelength. In addition, a modified equivalent circuit model is proposed to explicate its absorption mechanism. At last, we fabricate a prototype absorber, and measure its absorption in anechoic chamber. The experimental results agree well with the full wave simulation results. This work may provide a reference for design and fabrication of dynamically tunable microwave absorber based on large-scale graphene and may promote the actual applications of graphene at microwave frequency.

Abstract

Owing to its excellent electrical, mechanical, thermal and optical properties, graphene has attracted great interests since it was successfully exfoliated in 2004. Its two dimensional nature and superior properties meet the need of surface plasmons and greatly enrich the field of plasmonics. Recent progress and applications of graphene plasmonics will be reviewed, including the theoretical mechanisms, experimental observations, and meaningful applications. With relatively low loss, high confinement, flexible feature, and good tunability, graphene can be a promising plasmonic material alternative to the noble metals. Optics transformation, plasmonic metamaterials, light harvesting etc. are realized in graphene based devices, which are useful for applications in electronics, optics, energy storage, THz technology and so on. Abstract

Distributed micro‐energy harvesting devices offer the flexibility, sustainability, and multi‐scenario applicability that will be critical to wearable electronic products in the Internet of Things. The radiofrequency and triboelectric (RF‐TE) hybrid energy harvester (HEH) concept and prototype is presented for the first time, to simultaneously capture the energy from ambient electromagnetic waves and biological motions. The proposed hybrid energy harvesting system consists of a wearable rectenna, a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), and a power management circuit (PMC). Among them, the all‐fabric rectenna exhibits good impedance matching characteristics in the ISM frequency. The flexible TENG unit can generate a maximum power density of 0.024 µW cm−2. The designed multifunctional fabric‐based PMC can considerably enhance the controllability of harvested hybrid energy. Additionally, a normalizable fabric circuit board quasi surface mount technology (FCB‐SMT) is proposed to integrate all modules on the same fabric substrate in one step, making the entire system superior mechanical robustness. The proposed wearable fabric‐based RF‐TE hybrid energy harvester is capable of successfully driving consumer electronics (such as sensors, watches, etc.). It provides a new energy solution strategy for self‐powered wearable electronic devices and is anticipated to encourage the efficient utilization of renewable energy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

29. Fast Subentire-Domain Basis Functions Method for Analysis of Composite Finite Periodic Structures With Dielectric-Conductor Cells

Abstract

The subentire-domain (SED) basis functions method based on the multiple plane waves (MPWs) has achieved the efficient analysis of the scattering problem of the large-scale finite periodic structures (LFPSs) with interconnected perfect electric conducting cells. However, for the composite LFPSs with dielectric-conductor cells, the enormous unknowns in dielectric volume become a huge burden to construct matrix equations and obtain the SED basis functions. In addition, it is hard to manually set the match points of the volume meshes on the boundaries between adjacent cells. In this letter, the fast SED basis functions method has been proposed to analyze the composite LFPSs with dielectric-conductor cells. In the fast SED basis functions method, the discontinuous Galerkin technique has been employed to guarantee the continuity of the current on the boundaries of the adjacent cells without the match points. Moreover, the fast dipole method has been introduced to accelerate the calculation of the coupling among the SED basis functions. In the scattering and the radiation problems, the MPWs and the ports excited in turn have been applied to construct SED basis functions. Numerical experiments prove the accuracy and the efficiency of the fast SED basis functions method.

30. Flexible two-dimensional MXene-based antennas

Abstract

With the growing development of the Internet of things, wearable electronic devices have been extensively applied in civilian and military fields. As an essential component of data transmission in wearable electronics, a flexible antenna is one of the key aspects of research. Conventional metal antennas suffer from a large skin depth, and cannot satisfy the requirements of wearable electronics such as light weight, flexibility, and thinness. Recently, a group of two-dimensional metallic metal carbides (named MXenes) have been explored as building blocks for high-performance flexible antennas with excellent flexibility and superior mechanical strength. The appearance of hydrophilic functional groups at the surface of a MXene allows simple, scalable, and environmentally friendly manufacturing of MXene-based antennas. In this minireview, some pioneering works of MXene-based flexible radio frequency components are summarized, and the existing bottlenecks and the future trends of this promising field are discussed.

Abstract

Reading back of the instructions acquired by pilots through radiotelephony communication from air traffic controllers plays a very important role for civil aviation safety. Whereas the mistakes of readbacks are difficult to find out when the controller or the pilot is under great pressure, fatigue, tension etc. To solve this problem, the authors propose a novel semantic consistency verification method based on recurrent neural network with long short-term memory structure (LSTM-RNN) for Chinese radiotelephony readbacks. The actual Chinese civil aviation radiotelephony recordings are converted to textual format, and the semantic similarity is studied to verify whether the semantics is the same between the controller instructions and the pilot readbacks. The word-based feature is extracted by one-hot vector, and LSTM-RNN is employed to build up a deep network architecture for producing high-level sentence semantic abstraction of the initial input instructions and readbacks pairs. Cosine similarity is used to quantify the semantic similarity, and different classification methods are adopted to verify consistency in semantics. The experimental results show that the method is effective and provides a new scheme for the intelligent checking of aviation radiotelephony readbacks.
