The quest for room-temperature ductile ceramics has been repeatedly fueled by hopes for large-scale applications but so far has been not successful. Recent demonstrations of enhanced functional properties in ceramics through judicious dislocation imprint, however, have been sparking renewed interest in dislocation plasticity in brittle ceramics. Here, we propose a facile approach using room-temperature mechanically seeded mobile dislocations with a density of ~10^14/m^2 to significantly improve the room-temperature plasticity of ceramics with a large plastic strain beyond ~30%. The seeded mobile dislocations trigger profuse dislocation multiplication via cross slip and motion. Hence, they offer an avenue to suppress brittle fracture and harvest plasticity in ceramics without any additional high-temperature process. We employ both in situ nano-/micromechanical deformation and ex situ bulk deformation to bridge the length scales. This finding tackles the pressing bottleneck of dislocation engineering in ceramics for achieving ductile ceramics and harvesting both versatile mechanical and functional properties.

We report room-temperature bulk plasticity mediated by dislocations in single-crystal cubic KTaO3, contrasting the conventional knowledge that single-crystal KTaO3 is susceptible to brittle cleavage. A mechanics-based combinatorial experimental approach using cyclic Brinell indentation, scratching, and uniaxial bulk compression consistently demonstrates room-temperature dislocation plasticity in KTaO3 from the mesoscale to the macroscale. This approach also delivers tunable dislocation densities and plastic zone sizes. Scanning transmission electron microscopy analysis underpins the activated slip system to be <110>{1-10}. Given the growing significance of KTaO3 as an emerging electronic oxide and the increasing interest in dislocations for tuning physical properties of oxides, our findings are expected to trigger synergistic research interest in KTaO3 with dislocations.

When H, the lightest, smallest and most abundant atom in the universe, makes its way into a high-strength alloy (>650 MPa), the material's load-bearing capacity is abruptly lost. This phenomenon, known as H embrittlement, was responsible for the catastrophic and unpredictable failure of large engineering structures in service. The inherent antagonism between high strength requirements and H embrittlement susceptibility strongly hinders the design of lightweight yet reliable structural components needed for carbon-free hydrogen-propelled industries and reduced-emission transportation solutions. Inexpensive and scalable alloying and microstructural solutions that enable both, an intrinsically high resilience to H and high mechanical performance, must be found. Here we introduce a counterintuitive strategy to exploit typically undesired chemical heterogeneity within the material's microstructure that allows the local enhancement of crack resistance and local H trapping, thereby enhancing the resistance against H embrittlement. We deploy this approach to a lightweight, high-strength steel and produce a high-number density Mn-rich zones dispersed within the microstructure. These solute-rich buffer regions allow for local micro-tuning of the phase stability, arresting H-induced microcracks thus interrupting the H-assisted damage evolution chain, regardless of how and when H is introduced and also regardless of the underlying embrittling mechanisms. A superior H embrittlement resistance, increased by a factor of two compared to a reference material with a homogeneous solute distribution within each microstructure constituent, is achieved at no expense of the material's strength and ductility.

The interaction of hydrogen and metals continues to be industrially relevant and is a critical part of creating and supporting a safety case for nuclear reactor operation. In the present work, we explore hydrogen storage and hydride formation in a zirconium alloy. We characterise the structure and interfaces of fine scale hydrides using scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) including energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS/EDX), electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), and high-resolution STEM. Chemical characterisation is supported further with atom probe tomography (APT). Samples were prepared with cryo-focussed ion beam machining (cryo-FIB) and contain hydrides in {\alpha}-Zr matrix and hydrides associated with one FeCrZr secondary phase particle (SPP). Major findings include characterisation of different interface planes based upon the size of the hydrides and chemical redistribution of solute ahead of the hydride-metal interface. We also find significant (up to 6 at%) hydrogen retained in solution within the zirconium matrix and show a hydride with only 17 at% hydrogen, which is well below that of a {\xi}-phase stoichiometry suggesting it is an embryonic hydride. These findings help us understand the distribution of hydrogen and the nanoscale morphology of hydrides, which may influence the lifetime of zirconium-based nuclear fuel cladding., Comment: under review

The bulk quaternary equiatomic CoCrFeNi alloy is studied extensively in literature. Under experimental conditions, it shows a single-phase fcc structure and its physical and mechanical properties are similar to those of the quinary equiatomic CoCrFeMnNi alloy. Many studies in literature have focused on the mechanical properties of bulk nanocrystalline high entropy alloys or compositionally complex alloys, and their microstructure evolution upon annealing. The thin film processing route offers an excellent alternative to form nanocrystalline alloys. Due to the high nucleation rate and high density of defects in thin films synthesized by sputtering, the kinetics of microstructure evolution is often accelerated compared to those taking place in the bulk. Here, thin films are used to study the phase evolution in nanocrystalline CoCrFeNi deposited on Si/SiO 2 and c-sapphire substrates by magnetron cosputtering from elemental sources. The phases and microstructure of the films are discussed in comparison to the bulk alloy. The main conclusion is that second phases can form even at room temperature provided there are sufficient nucleation sites.

We investigate the strain-rate-dependent mechanical behavior and deformation mechanisms of a refractory high entropy alloy, Ti29Zr24Nb23Hf24 (at.%), with a single-phase body-centered cubic (BCC) structure. High-temperature compression tests were conducted at temperatures from 700 to 1100{\deg}C at strain rates ranging from 10-3 to 10 s-1. A sudden stress drop after yield point was observed at higher temperatures and lower strain rates with the Zener-Holloman parameter, lnZ, in the range of 17.2-20.7. Such a softening behavior can be related to the interaction of dislocations with short-range clustering. However, at higher strain rates or lower temperatures (lnZ>25.0), kink bands were activated being responsible for the continuous strengthening of the alloy in competition with the softening mechanism. Systematic TEM investigations reveal that dislocation walls formed along {110} planes and dislocation loops were observed at a low strain of 6% at a high strain rate of 1 s-1 and 800{\deg}C. Kink band induced dynamic recrystallization is evident upon further straining. On the other hand, at low strain rate of 10-3 s-1 and 800{\deg}C, discontinuous recrystallization mechanisms become dominant with arrays of dislocations forming in front of the bulged boundaries of parent grains. These sub-grain boundaries eventually turn into high-angle grain boundaries. We also investigate the deformation mechanism of the alloy under extremely high strain rate (103 s-1) at room temperature. The specimen exhibits extensive kink bands with arrays of dislocation walls. As further strained, multiple slip systems can be activated and the interaction of dislocation walls plays a vital role in the strain hardening of the alloy.

A face-centered cubic (FCC) phase in electro-polished specimens for transmission electron microscopy of commercially pure titanium has sometimes been reported. Here, a combination of atom-probe tomography, scanning transmission electron microscopy and low-loss electron energy loss spectroscopy is employed to study both the crystal structural and chemical composition of this FCC phase. Our results prove that the FCC phase is actually a TiHx (x>1) hydride, and not a new allotrope of Ti, in agreement with previous reports. The formation of the hydride is discussed.
