Introduction: The growth of oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in positive human papillomavirus (HPV) patients is observed. The epidemiological profile is: young men, non-smokers and non-alcoholics. This is attributed to changes in promiscuous sexual practice. Objective: To understand HPV carcinogenesis, epidemiological and preventive implications. Methods: An integrative review of the literature was carried out in March 2018 in the PubMed and Science Direct databases. The descriptors used were: SCC, Young, HPV and Staging, combined by the AND modulator. Inclusion criteria were articles published in the last 10 years, related to the thematic and in the English, Portuguese and Spanish languages. In the PubMed were found 75 articles, after the application of the inclusion criteria were selected 64 articles for study. In the Science Direct were found 8 articles, after applying the selection criteria was selected 1 article for analysis. Results: HPV subtypes 16 and 18 are the most virulent. HPV is carcinogenic through the E6 and E7 genes. E6 inactivates the tumor suppressor gene p53. E7 inactivates the tumor suppressor gene pRb, resulting in overexpression of the p16 tumor suppressor protein that is associated with a better prognosis. The impact of TNM staging changed over time, the effect of N staging on mortality reduced, while the impact of T staging increased. Conclusion: Protected sexual practice and vaccination are efficient measures for the control of SCC, HPV positive. Therefore, the campaigns should be extended to the male audience. In addition, the staging of the disease should be updated for a better prognosis.

This study aims to investigate the association between health conditions and overweight in climacteric women assisted by primary care professionals. It is a cross-sectional study conducted with 874 women from 40 to 65 years of age, selected by probabilistic sampling between August 2014 and August 2015. In addition to the outcome variable, other variables such as overweight/obesity, sociodemographic, reproductive, clinical, eating and behavioural factors were evaluated. Descriptive analyses of the variables investigated through their frequency distributions were performed. Then, bivariate analyses were performed through Poisson regression. For the multiple analyses, the hierarchical Poisson regression was used to identify factors associated with overweight/obesity in the climacteric period. The prevalence of overweight/obesity was 74%. Attending public school (PR: 1.30 - 95% CI 1.14 - 1.50), low schooling (PR: 1.11 - 95% CI 1.01 - 1.23), gout (PR: 1.18 - 95% CI 1.16-1.44), kidney disease (PR: 1.18 - 95% CI 1.05 - 1.32), metabolic syndrome - MS (PR: 1.19 - 95% CI 1.05 - 1.34) and fat intake (PR: 1.12 - 95% CI 1.02 - 1.23) were considered risk factors for overweight. Having the first birth after 18 years (PR: 0.89 - 95% CI 0.82 to 0.97) was shown to be a protective factor for overweight and obesity. The presence of overweight and obesity is associated with socio-demographic, reproductive, clinical and eating habits.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the condylar position in patients with intra-articular temporomandibular disorders (TMD) before and after treatment with interocclusal stabilization splint (ISS) through computerized tomography cone beams (CTCB). Twenty-two patients diagnosed with intra-articular TMD (Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders - Group II) were submitted to the therapy with ISS during 90 days. Three CTCB exams were performed in three moments: T1 – Initial moment, before the ISS therapy, with the patient in dental occlusion; T2 (after 90 days of treatment, in occlusion on the ISS) and T3 (after 90 days of treatment, with the patient in dental occlusion). Afterwards the anterior (AS), superior (SS) and posterior articular space (PS) in sagittal sections were then measured and the data were statistically analyzed using the t-test. There was a statistically significant increase in the comparison between T1 and T2 for the AS and PS (p< 0.0001), between T3 and T2 for AS (p= 0.0008) and PS (p< 0.0001). In comparison T1/T3 there was a significant increase in AS (p= 0.01) and SS (p= 0.04), and non-significant in PS (p= 0.89). The interocclusal splint provides temporary changes in condylar position, with a tendency to increase the joint space, varying in accordance with individual characteristics. Therefore, it should not be used as a single therapy, but combined with other strategies that include the TMD multidimensionality. The interocclusal splint has proved to be reversible and conservative therapeutic modality, as it does not generate permanent changes in joint tissues.

To evaluate which method is the most applicable for estimating estimate dental age in Brazilian children, Nolla or Demirjian. For this purpose, both methods were reviewed and the differences between them brought to light. A total of 403 healthy children between the ages of 7 and 13 years with satisfactory panoramic radiographs, similar socio-economic background and ethnic origin were included. Panoramic radiographs were examined by the Nolla and Demirjian methods. Dental age was calculated for both methods, and the differences between the dental age and the chronological age were compared with analysis of variance with post hoc Dunnett. The Nolla method showed no significant difference in relation to chronological age in the majority of age groups for boys and girls, except for 12-year-old boys (over-estimation of 1.00) and between 11- and 12-year-old girls (over-estimation of 0.51 and 0.59, respectively). An over-estimation of the dental age was observed by using the Demirjian method (for boys 0.89-1.84 and for girls 0.69-1.97) for all age groups. The Nolla method is suitable for Brazilian children when it comes to age estimate with care to growth spurt beginning (around 11 and 12 years). However, the Dermijian method should not be used, because it over-estimated the age in both sexes.

Hemifacial hyperplasia is a developmental disorder characterized by marked unilateral facial asymmetry. It involves the hard and soft tissues of the face. The cause is unknown, although several predisposing factors have been described. A case report of an 8-year-old boy with hemifacial hyperplasia is presented to highlight the clinical and imaging findings. (J Oral Sci 52, 509-512, 2010)

Gingival fibromatosis (GF) is characterized by fibrotic enlargement of the gingiva that can be inherited as an isolated trait (named hereditary gingival fibromatosis) or as a component of a syndrome. This article reports one kindred affected by a syndrome characterized by GF associated with dental abnormalities (DA) including generalized thin hypoplastic amelogenesis imperfecta (AI).To characterize the pattern of inheritance and the clinical features, 70 family members were examined. Hematoxylin and eosin staining, immunohistochemistry, and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) were performed to identify the alterations on gingiva, teeth, and dental follicles.Examination of the family pedigree demonstrated multiple consanguineous first-cousin marriages and an autosomal recessive trait of inheritance. Four members demonstrated mild GF in association with DA, including generalized thin hypoplastic AI, intrapulpal calcifications, delay of tooth eruption, and pericoronal radiolucencies involving unerupted teeth. One of those four patients also had mental retardation (MR). MR as an isolated feature was observed in six members, whereas isolated GF was found in one individual. A combination of gingivectomy and gingivoplasty followed by regular dental procedures were performed in these patients. Histologic examination of the gingival enlargement revealed a dense connective tissue containing myofibroblasts, islands of odontogenic epithelium, and calcified psammomatous deposits, which resembled cementicle-like structures by SEM. Pericoronal lesions also showed calcified psammomatous deposits in association with islands of odontogenic epithelium. Enamel ultrastructure analysis revealed normal surface alternating with irregular and porous areas.To the best of our knowledge, these cases represent a new syndrome within the spectrum of those including GF.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of taurodontism in patients with nonsyndromic cleft lip and palate (NSCLP) within a Brazilian population.The study was designed as an epidemiologic case-control single-center study. Three hundred eighty-eight patients were included: 88 had NSCLP, and 300 comprised the control group. The first and second permanent mandibular molars were included in this study. By using panoramic radiographs, taurodontism was categorized as mesotaurodontism, hypotaurodontism, and hypertaurodontism.Seventy patients (23.3%) from the control group and 36 patients (40.9%) from the case group presented taurodontism (P.001). In the control group, 108 (9%) teeth showed taurodontism, whereas in the case group with cleft lip and palate (CLP), 64 (18.2%) teeth showed dental anomalies (P.001). In both groups, most taurodontic teeth presented hypotaurodontism, followed by mesotaurodontism, while hypertaurodontism was found in only two teeth. The probability of taurodontism in patients with cleft lip (CL) was 2.36 (P = .010) times higher compared with those with CLP, whereas the occurrence of taurodontism in patients with cleft palate (CP) was 3.15 (P = .002) times greater than in patients with CLP.The results from this study indicate a close relationship between taurodontism and NSCLP and the possibility of different cleft subphenotypes.

Enamel-renal syndrome (OMIM #204690) is an uncommon disorder characterized by amelogenesis imperfecta and nephrocalcinosis and is caused by mutations in FAM20 A. We report 2 patients with enamel-renal syndrome who exhibited the typical features of this syndrome and a homozygous nonsense mutation in the FAM20 A gene (c.406 C>T), genetically confirming the diagnosis. They also exhibited 2 undescribed clinical features, hypertrichosis and hearing loss. Alterations in genes frequently associated with nonsyndromic hearing loss in the Brazilian population, including connexin 26 (GJB2), connexin 30 (GJB6) and mitochondrial 12 S rRNA (m.A1555 G mutation), were not found. These results suggest a putative function of FAM20 A in the development of the inner ear and in the formation of hair. The presence of nephrocalcinosis is a risk factor for renal impairment, and it is important to perform regular renal monitoring in order to avoid renal failure.

A rare case of Stafne's bone cavity, type III-G, is reported in a 49-year-old male patient who had been referred to a private clinic for a routine evaluation. The final diagnosis was based on computed tomography. Scintigraphy played a fundamental role in determining the most likely etiology.

This in vitro study compared conventional and digital radiographic linear measurements to determine the working length (WL) of curved canals with fine endodontic files. In total, 30 mesiobuccal root canals in molars were measured with a #06 K-file to a length 1 mm short of the apical foramen (WL1). Teeth were mounted in plastic blocks and standardized periapical radiographs were obtained by conventional and digital (Digora Optime) radiographic methods with #06, #08 and #10 K-files positioned in WL1. Two independent and calibrated examiners performed the conventional measurements with a millimeter ruler, from the file stop to the file tip (WL2). For the digital images, examiners used the linear measurement tool on the Digora software, in original mode (WL3). For comparison of WL1, WL2 and WL3, the Wilcoxon test (P < 0.05) was applied and the reproducibility of the measurements was assessed. There was no statistically significant difference between Wl2 and Wl3 for #06, #08 and #10 K-files (P = 0.341, 0.641 and 0.232, respectively), with an acceptable level of interexaminer agreement. The measurements of Wl2 and Wl3 were significantly (P < 0.05) larger than those of WL1. No difference was observed among the linear measures obtained with either radiographic method, which showed higher WL values than the direct measurements.

A 42-year-old black woman was referred to our stomatologyclinic, complaining of pain in the right maxilla following theextraction of her second premolar. This condition was diagnosedas a localized alveolar osteitis (dry socket) and treated locallywith an intra-alveolar dressing. During physical examination, anincidental asymptomatic expansion of the left buccogingival foldwas noted. The lesion extended from the left edentulous man-dibular premolar area to the ascending ramus and measuredapproximately 8 rior mandible. Ameloblastoma shows characteristics of a be-5 cm. The involved area had a soft-to-fluctuant consistency and was covered by normal-appearingmucosa(Fig.1).Theoverlyingskinandmucosadidnotexhibitany altered sensation. A panoramic radiograph revealed thepresenceofawell-demarcated,multilocularradiolucentlesioninvolving the coronoid process, ascending ramus, and the leftbodyofthemandible(Fig.2).Theradiographicloculationswerelargewithrelativelycoarseinternaltrabeculae.Theinferiorcortical plate appeared to be intact. There was no evidence ofregional lymphadenopathy. The medical history of the patientwas noncontributory.

Peripheral ameloblastoma is a rare odontogenic soft tissue tumor, derived from epithelial and/or mesenchymal elements being part of the tooth-forming apparatus. The lesion responses for approximately 1% to 5% of all cases of ameloblastoma affecting alveolar mucosa and gingiva occur, mainly, in the middle age. This article describes a case of peripheral ameloblastoma involving a 20-year-old male located in the (upper/lower, vestibular/buccal) gingiva. After the case presentation, clinical and microscopic findings are discussed.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a posição condilar em pacientes com DTM articular antes e após tratamento com placa interoclusal estabilizadora por meio de tomografia computadorizada de feixes cônicos. Foram avaliados e tratados 22 pacientes com algum sinal ou sintoma de DTM articular, triados nas Clínicas do Curso de Odontologia da Universidade Estadual de Montes Claros, que preencheram os critérios de inclusão e exclusão. O diagnóstico de DTM foi realizado com o Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD). Os pacientes foram submetidos a terapia com placa interoclusal estabilizadora durante 90 dias. Foram realizados três exames de tomografia computadorizada de feixes cônicos na região das ATM direita e esquerda, sendo: a primeira no início do tratamento, com o paciente na posição de MIH (G1); a segunda após 90 dias de tratamento, com o paciente ocluindo na placa interoclusal estabilizadora (G2); e a terceira após 90 dias de tratamento, com o paciente na posição de MIH (G3). Foram realizadas medidas dos espaços articulares anterior, superior e posterior em cortes sagitais das ATM. Os dados coletados foram analisados estatisticamente por meio do teste t: amostras pareadas ao nível de 5% de significância para a comparação entre dois grupos. Na comparação entre G1 e G2, e entre G3 e G2, houve aumento estatisticamente significante para o espaço articular superior e para o posterior, e não significante para o espaço articular anterior. Para a comparação entre G1 e G3 foi possível verificar aumento estatisticamente significante no espaço articular anterior e no superior, e não significante no espaço articular posterior. Os resultados da análise do RDC/TMD mostraram uma significante melhora na dor relatada pelos pacientes e aumento estatisticamente significante na abertura bucal máxima ao final da terapia com placa interoclusal estabilizadora. Considerando o método utilizado e os dados amostrais, foi possível verificar aumento espacial entre o côndilo e a cavidade articular durante o uso de placa interoclusal estabilizadora e, também, que esta terapia melhorou a dor relatada pelos pacientes e aumentou a amplitude do movimento de abertura mandibular. The aim of this study was to evaluate the condylar position in patients with articular TMD before and after treatment with occlusal splints by cone beam computed tomography. Were evaluated and treated 22 patients with signs or symptoms of TMD joint, screened in the Clinical School of Dentistry, Universidade Estadual de Montes Claros, who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The diagnosis of TMD was conducted with the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC / TMD). The patients were subjected to therapy for occlusal splints for 90 days. Three cone beam computed tomography scans in the region of the TMJ right and left, were being conducted: the first at the beginning of treatment, with the patient in the position of MIH (G1); the second after 90 days of treatment with the patient occluding the occlusal splint (G2); and the third after 90 days of treatment with the patient in the position of MIH (G3). Measures of joint spaces were performed in front, superior and posterior in sagittal cuts of the TMJ. The collected data were analyzed statistically using the t test: paired samples at the 5 % significance level for the comparison between two groups. In the comparison between G1 and G2 and between G2 and G3, a statistically significant increase for the superior joint space and the posterior, but there was no statistically significant difference in the front joint space. For the comparison between G1 and G3, was observed a statistically significant increase in front joint space and superior, and not significant in the posterior joint space. The results of the analysis of the RDC / TMD showed a significant improvement in pain reported by patients and statistically significant increase in maximal mouth opening at the end of therapy with occlusal splints. Considering the method used and the sample data, it was possible to increase the space between the condyle and the articular cavity during use of occlusal splints and also that this therapy improved pain reported by patients and increased range of motion of mandibular opening.
