The DOF (DNA-binding with one finger) transcription factors are exclusive to plants and play crucial roles in plant growth, development, and environmental adaptation. Although extensive research has been conducted on the Dof gene family in Arabidopsis, maize, and Solanum, investigations concerning the role of this gene family in Liriodendron remain unreported, leaving its biological function largely unknown. In this study, we performed a comprehensive genome-wide identification of the Dof gene family based on the Liriodendron genome, resulting in the discovery of a total of 17 LcDof gene members. Based on the results of phylogenetic analysis, the 17 LcDof proteins were classified into eight subfamilies. The motif analysis revealed the diverse nature of motifs within the D1 subfamily, which includes a distinct type of Dof transcription factor known as CDF (Cycling Dof Factor). We further characterized the chromosomal distribution, gene structure, conserved protein motifs, and cis-elements in the promoter regions. Additionally, utilizing transcriptome data from Liriodendron hybrids and conducting RT-qPCR experiments, we investigated the expression patterns of LhDofs under various abiotic stresses such as drought, cold, and heat stress. Notably, we found that several LhDofs, particularly LhDof4 and LhDof6, were significantly upregulated in response to abiotic stress. Furthermore, we cloned LhDof4 and LhDof6 genes and found that its encoding protein was mainly located in the nucleus by transient transformation in Liriodendron hybrids protoplast. Subsequently, we used LhDof6-overexpressing Liriodendron hybrid seedlings. We found that overexpression of LhDof6 enhanced the cold tolerance of the plants, increasing their survival rate at −20 °C. This result was further validated by changes in physiological indicators.

This study investigates lightweight and efficient candidates for sound absorption to address the growing demand for sustainable and eco-friendly materials in noise attenuation. Juncus effusus (JE) is a natural fiber known for its unique three-dimensional network, providing a viable and sustainable filler for enhanced sound absorption in honeycomb panels. Microperforated-panel (MPP) honeycomb absorbers incorporating JE fillers were fabricated and designed, focusing on optimizing the absorber designs by varying JE filler densities, geometrical arrangements, and MPP parameters. At optimal filling densities, the MPP-type honeycomb structures filled with JE fibers achieved high noise reduction coefficients (NRC) of 0.5 and 0.7 at 20 mm and 50 mm thicknesses, respectively. Using an analytical model and an artificial neural network (ANN) model, the sound absorption characteristics of these absorbers were successfully predicted. This study demonstrates the potential of JE fibers in improving noise mitigation strategies across different industries, offering more sustainable and efficient solutions for construction and transportation.

Abstract As one of the largest plant specific transcription factor families, NAC family members play an important role in plant growth, development and stress resistance. To investigate the function of NAC transcription factors during abiotic stress, as well as during somatic embryogenesis, we identified and characterized the NAC gene family in Liriodendron chinense. We found that most LcNAC members contain more than three exons, with a relatively conserved gene and motif structure, especially at the N-terminus. Interspecies collinearity analysis revealed a closer relationship between the L. chinense NACs and the P. trichocarpa NACs. We analyzed the expression of LcNAC in different tissues and under three abiotic stresses. We found that 12 genes were highly expressed during the ES3 and ES4 stages of somatic embryos, suggesting that they are involved in the development of somatic embryos. 6 LcNAC genes are highly expressed in flower organs. The expression pattern analysis of LcNACs based on transcriptome data and RT-qPCR obtained from L. chinense leaves indicated differential expression responses to drought, cold, and heat stress. Genes in the NAM subfamily expressed differently during abiotic stress, and LcNAC6/18/41/65 might be the key genes in response to abiotic stress. LcNAC6/18/41/65 were cloned and transiently transformed into Liriodendron protoplasts, where LcNAC18/65 was localized in cytoplasm and nucleus, and LcNAC6/41 was localized only in nucleus. Overall, our findings suggest a role of the NAC gene family during environmental stresses in L. chinense. This research provides a basis for further study of NAC genes in Liriodendron chinense.

Thioredoxin (TRX) is a small protein with REDOX activity that plays a crucial role in a plant’s growth, development, and stress resistance. The TRX family has been extensively studied in Arabidopsis, rice, and wheat, and so it is likely that its members have similar biological functions in Liriodendron that have not been reported in Liriodendron. In this study, we performed the genome-wide identification of the TRX gene family based on the Liriodendron chinense genome, leading to a total of 42 LcTRX gene members. A phylogenetic analysis categorized these 42 LcTRX proteins into 13 subfamilies. We further characterized their chromosome distributions, gene structures, conserved protein motifs, and cis-elements in the promoter regions. In addition, based on the publicly available transcriptome data for Liriodendron hybrid and following RT-qPCR experiments, we explored the expression patterns of LhTRXs to different abiotic stressors, i.e., drought, cold, and heat stress. Notably, we found that several LhTRXs, especially LhTRX-h3, were significantly upregulated in response to abiotic stress. In addition, the subcellular localization assay showed that LhTRX-h3 was mainly distributed in the cytoplasm. Subsequently, we obtained LhTRX-h3 overexpression (OE) and knockout (KO) callus lines in Liriodendron hybrid. Compared to the wild type (WT) and LhTRX-h3-KO callus proliferation of LhTRX-h3-OE lines was significantly enhanced with reduced reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation under drought stress. Our findings that LhTRX-h3 is sufficient to improve drought tolerance. and underscore the significance of the TRX gene family in environmental stress responses in Liriodendron.

Adventitious root formation is a bottleneck during vegetative proliferation. Potassium (K+) is an essential macronutrient for plants. K+ accumulation from the soil and its distribution to the different plant organs is mediated by K+ transporters named K+ transporter (KT), K+ uptake (KUP), or high-affinity K+ (HAK). This study aimed to identify members of the HAK gene family in apples and to characterize the effects of K+ supply on adventitious root formation and on the expression of HAK genes and the genes that putatively control auxin transport, signaling, and cell fate during adventitious root formation. In this study, 34 HAK genes (MdHAKs) were identified in the apple (Malus × domestica ‘Golden Delicious’) genome. A phylogenetic analysis divided MdHAKs into four clusters (I, II, III, and IV), comprising 16, 1, 4, and 13 genes, respectively. The syntenic relationships revealed that 62.5% of the total MdHAK genes arise from genomic duplication events. Chromosome location, domain structure, motif analysis, and physico-chemical characteristics were subsequently investigated. Furthermore, the application of K+ indicated the emergence of adventitious roots at 8 d and produced more adventitious roots at 16 d than the K+-free control (CK) treatment. In addition, various MdHAKs showed root-specific expression in B9 apple rootstock stem cuttings and enhanced expression during the initiation and emergence stages of adventitious root formation in response to K+ treatment. Additionally, K+ treatment enhanced the expression levels of MdPIN1, MdPIN2, and MdAUX1. Further data indicated that a higher expression of MdWOX11, MdLBD16, and MdLBD29 and of cell cycle-related genes contributed to the auxin-stimulated adventitious root formation in response to K+.

Lung cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related death. Most advanced lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) patients have poor survival because of drug resistance and relapse. Neglecting intratumoral heterogeneity might be one of the reasons for treatment insensitivity, while single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) technologies can provide transcriptome information at the single-cell level. Herein, we combined scRNA-seq and bulk RNA-seq data of LUAD and identified a novel cluster of malignant epithelial cells - KRT81+ malignant epithelial cells - associated with worse prognoses. Further analysis revealed that the hypoxia and EMT pathways of these cells were activated to predispose them to differentiate into metastatic lung adenocarcinoma cells. Finally, we also studied the role of these tumor cells in the immune microenvironment and their role in the classification and prognosis prediction of lung adenocarcinoma patients.

Abstract Background Ovarian cancer is a common gynecological disease and seriously endangers women's health. Currently, there is still a lack of effective molecular markers for the diagnosis and treatment of ovarian cancer. The present study aimed to investigate the molecular markers associated with ovarian cancer. Methods The molecular and gene related to ovarian cancer were extracted from GEO database and TCGA database by bioinformatics, and the related genes and functions were further analyzed. The results were verified by qPCR, WB, CCK-8 and Transwell experiments. Results Data analysis showed that PTH2R gene was highly expressed in tumors, and 51 HUB genes were obtained. Finally, experimental verification showed that PTH2R gene was highly expressed in ovarian cancer, and PTH2R gene was involved in the proliferation, invasion and metastasis of ovarian cancer cells. Conclusions After experimental verification, we found that knocking down the expression of PTH2R can inhibit the proliferation, invasion and migration of tumor cells.PTH2R is expected to become a new molecular marker for ovarian cancer.

Abstract Background This study retrospectively analyzed and evaluated the potential correlations of serum calcium, serum phosphorus, and calcium-phosphorus product (Ca–P product) with the incidence of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs), with the aim of exploring whether the Ca–P product can be used as a serological indicator to predict the risk of OVCFs. Methods This study randomly enrolled 400 elderly patients in our hospital with OVCFs and 400 patients with hip and knee arthroplasty due to femoral head necrosis or osteoarthritis from August 2013 to April 2021. Age, sex, past medical history, and admission biochemical indicators, including albumin, blood urea nitrogen, serum creatinine, serum calcium and serum phosphorus, were collected for statistical analysis. In order to explore the pore structure characteristics of phase change energy storage backfill and their influence on the strength deterioration of backfill, a composite phase change material was prepared with butyl stearate as the phase change material and expanded perlite as the adsorption medium. Cement and tailings were mixed to prepare backfills with different additive amounts of the composite phase change material. The strength and structure characteristics of the phase change energy storage backfill with different addition amounts were obtained by using the methods of CT (computer tomography) scanning, MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) analysis, and uniaxial compression test, and the influence mechanism was analyzed. The results show that: i) The porosity of phase change energy storage backfill increases gradually with the increase of the addition amount. The macropore porosity increases approximately linearly, the proportion of macropores increases gradually, and the pores approximate to sphere. ii) With the increase of the amount of phase change material, the connectivity of the backfill increases, the pore throat length increases, and the number of macropores increases. The pore throat coordination number is concentrated below 5, and the fractal dimension decreases first and then increases significantly, resulting in complex pore distribution. iii) With 5% additive amount, the uniaxial compressive strength of backfill decreases by 30.2% due to the increase of macropores and pore connectivity. With 10% additive amount, the pore size distribution becomes uniform and the uniaxial compressive strength decreases by 48.9%.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are considered biofertilizers for sustainable agriculture due to their ability to facilitate plant uptake of important mineral elements, such as nitrogen (N). However, plant mycorrhiza-dependent N uptake and interplant transfer may be highly context-dependent, and whether it is affected by aboveground herbivory remains largely unknown. Here, we used 15N labeling and tracking to examine the effect of aboveground insect herbivory by Spodoptera frugiperda on mycorrhiza-dependent N uptake in maize (Zea mays L.). To minimize consumption differences and 15N loss due to insect chewing, insect herbivory was simulated by mechanical wounding and oral secretion of S. frugiperda larvae. Inoculation with Rhizophagus irregularis (Rir) significantly improved maize growth, and N/P uptake. The 15N labeling experiment showed that maize plants absorbed N from soils via the extraradical mycelium of mycorrhizal fungi and from neighboring plants transferred by common mycorrhizal networks (CMNs). Simulated aboveground leaf herbivory did not affect mycorrhiza-mediated N acquisition from soil. However, CMN-mediated N transfer from neighboring plants was blocked by leaf simulated herbivory. Our findings suggest that aboveground herbivory inhibits CMN-mediated N transfer between plants but does not affect N acquisition from soil solutions via extraradical mycorrhizal mycelium.

Under the dual pressure of central environmental performance appraisal and fiscal pressure, local Chinese governments, especially those in resource-dependent cities, struggle with reprioritizing environmental protection over economic growth while staying under budget. However, the empirical impact of such endeavors on pollution control remains underexplored. Based on 2003–2018 panel data on resource-dependent cities in China, this paper adopts a dynamic panel model to explore the effect of local government fiscal pressure on air pollution. The results show that (1) due to the effect of path dependency on existing economic development patterns, resource-dependent cities suffer from a vicious circle where fiscal pressure aggravates air pollution emissions. (2) As shown by the heterogeneity test, air pollution emissions increase significantly as financial pressure becomes severe; the situation also worsens in mature-type resource-dependent cities. (3) The increase in the number of years in the office of top local government leaders exacerbates the negative effect of fiscal pressure on air pollution; in contrast, the increase in age of these officials mitigates the negative effect. (4) The results of the mechanism test show that financial pressure mainly aggravates environmental degradation by hindering industrial structure upgrading and inhibiting urban green innovation.

Clonal plants are interconnected to form clonal plant networks with physiological integration, enabling the reassignment as well as sharing of resources among the members. The systemic induction of antiherbivore resistance via clonal integration may frequently operate in the networks. Here, we used an important food crop rice (Oryza sativa), and its destructive pest rice leaffolder (LF; Cnaphalocrocis medinalis) as a model to examine defense communication between the main stem and clonal tillers. LF infestation and MeJA pretreatment on the main stem for two days reduced the weight gain of LF larvae fed on the corresponding primary tillers by 44.5% and 29.0%, respectively. LF infestation and MeJA pretreatment on the main stem also enhanced antiherbivore defense responses in primary tillers: increased levels of a trypsin protease inhibitor, putative defensive enzymes, and jasmonic acid (JA), a key signaling compound involved in antiherbivore induced defenses; strong induction of genes encoding JA biosynthesis and perception; and rapid activation of JA pathway. However, in a JA perception OsCOI RNAi line, LF infestation on main stem showed no or minor effects on antiherbivore defense responses in primary tillers. Our work demonstrates that systemic antiherbivore defense operate in the clonal network of rice plants and JA signaling plays a crucial role in mediating defense communication between main stem and tillers in rice plants. Our findings provide a theoretical basis for the ecological control of pests by using the systemic resistance of cloned plants themselves.

Picolinic acid (PA) is a typical mono-carboxylated pyridine derivative produced by human/animals or microorganisms which could be served as nutrients for bacteria. Most Bordetella strains are pathogens causing pertussis or respiratory disease in humans and/or various animals. Previous studies indicated that Bordetella strains harbor the PA degradation pic gene cluster. However, the degradation of PA by Bordetella strains remains unknown. In this study, a reference strain of genus Bordetella, B. bronchiseptica RB50, was investigated. The organization of pic gene cluster of strain RB50 was found to be similar with that of Alcaligenes faecalis, in which the sequence similarities of each Pic proteins are between 60% to 80% except for PicB2 (47% similarity). The 3,6-dihydroxypicolinic acid (3,6DHPA) decarboxylase gene (BB0271, designated as picCRB50) of strain RB50 was synthesized and over-expressed in E. coli BL21(DE3). The PicCRB50 showed 75% amino acid similarities against known PicC from Alcaligenes faecalis. The purified PicCRB50 can efficiently transform 3,6DHPA to 2,5-dihydroxypyridine. The PicCRB50 exhibits optimal activities at pH 7.0, 35 °C, and the Km and kcat values of PicCRB50 for 3,6DHPA were 20.41 ± 2.60 μM and 7.61 ± 0.53 S−1, respectively. The present study provided new insights into the biodegradation of PA by pathogens of Bordetella spp.

Ovarian cancer is one of the deadliest gynecological cancer, with a low overall 5-year survival rate. RDM1, RAD52 motif-containing protein 1, is sensitive to cisplatin, a common chemotherapy drug and it has an important role inDNA damage repair pathway. Until now, the effect of RDM1 in ovarian cancer is undiscovered. Here, clinical data shows that the tumour tissues of ovarian carcinoma patients with higher mRNA and protein expression of RDM1. Knockdown of RDM1 in ovarian carcinoma cells reduces cell proliferation and promotes apoptosis, consistent with the role RDM1 in the overexpression experiments. The research of xenograft mouse model shows stable knockdown of RDM1 significantly inhibits ovarian cancer tumour growth. These in vitro and in vivo results conclude that RDM1 plays an oncogenic role in human ovarian carcinoma. Interestingly, p53/RAD51/RAD52 signalling pathway can be regulated by RDM1, and the negative regulation of p53 by RDM1 may be one of major mechanisms for RDM1 to accomplish its oncogenic functions in ovarian carcinoma. Therefore, RDM1 may be a new target for the treatment of ovarian carcinoma.

Koinobiont endoparasitoid wasps whose larvae develop inside a host insect alter several important facets of host physiology, potentially causing cascading effects across multiple trophic levels. For instance, the hijacking of the host immune responses may have effects on how insects interact with host plants and microbial associates. However, the parasitoid regulation of insect–plant–microbiome interactions is still understudied. In this study, we used the fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda, and the braconid parasitoid Cotesia marginiventris to evaluate impacts of parasitism on the gut microbiome of FAW larvae, and respective maize plant defense responses. The level of reactive oxygen species and the microbial community in larval gut underwent significant changes in response to parasitism, leading to a significant reduction of Enterococcus, while elevating the relative abundance of Pseudomonas. FAW with parasitism had lower glucose oxidase (GOX) activity in salivary glands and triggered lower defense responses in maize plants. These changes corresponded to effects on plants, as Pseudomonas inoculated larvae had lower activity of salivary GOX and triggered lower defense responses in maize plants. Our results demonstrated that parasitism had cascading effects on microbial associates across trophic levels and also highlighted that insect gut bacteria may contribute to complex interrelationships among parasitoids, herbivores, and plants.

Both glucose-regulated protein 78 kDa (GRP78) and glucose-regulated protein 94 kDa (GRP94) are important molecular chaperones that play critical roles in maintaining tumor survival and progression. This study investigated the effects in prostate cancer cells following the downregulation of GRP78 and GRP94.

Abstract Recently, an open-source light-weight dynamic traffic assignment (DTA) package, namely DTALite, has been developed to allow a rapid utilization of advanced dynamic traffic analysis capabilities. Aiming to bridge the modeling gaps between multi-agent simulation and optimization in a multimodal environment, we further design and develop DTALite-S to simplify the traffic flow dynamic representation details in DTALite for future extensions. We hope to offer a unified modeling framework with inherently consistent space–time network representations for both optimization formulation and simulation process. This paper includes three major modeling components: (1) mathematic formulations to describe traffic and public transportation simulation problem on a space–time network; (2) transportation transition dynamics involving multiple agents in the optimization process; (3) an alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM)-based modeling structure to link different features between multi-agent simulation and optimization used in transportation. This unified framework can be embedded in a Lagrangian relaxation method and a time-oriented sequential simulation procedure to handle many general applications. We carried out a case study by using this unified framework to simulate the passenger traveling process in Beijing subway network which contains 18 urban rail transit lines, 343 stations, and 52 transfer stations. Via the ADMM-based solution approach, queue lengths at platforms, in-vehicle congestion levels and absolute deviation of travel times are obtained within 1560 seconds.The case study indicate that the open-source DTALite-S integrates simulation and optimization procedure for complex dynamic transportation systems and can efficiently generate comprehensive space-time traveling status.

With the continuous acceleration of the exploration and development progress of geothermal (hot dry rock) resources, the workload of geothermal resource investigation and drilling has increased sharply, but the research and application of comprehensive logging technology is relatively lagging behind in China. This article analyses the response relationship of various logging data to geothermal geological conditions item by item, introduces the development and application status of logging technology at home and abroad, and takes HR-1 well as an example to give a brief introduction and analysis of the comprehensive logging technology. Theory and practice have proved that the comprehensive logging can provide an important reference and scientific basis for the evaluation of the potential of geothermal reserves. The development and application status of the geothermal logging technology in China can no longer meet the needs of geothermal resource exploration and development. It is imperative to carry out in-depth research on geothermal logging technology and further increase its application.

Abstract Recently, automation, shared use, and electrification are viewed as the “three revolutions” in the future transportation sector, and the traditional scheduled public transit system will be greatly enhanced with flexible services and autonomous vehicle scheduling capabilities. Many emerging scheduled transportation applications include the fully automatic operation system in urban rail transit, joint line planning, and timetabling for high-speed rail as well as emerging self-driving vehicle dispatching. The vehicle routing problem (VRP) holds promise for seeking an optimal set of vehicle routes and schedules to meet customers’ requirements and plays a vital role in optimizing services for feature scheduled transportation systems. Due to the difficulty of finding optimal solutions for large-scale instances, enormous research efforts have been dedicated to developing efficient algorithms, while our paper presents a unique perspective based on a time-dependent and state-dependent path searching framework. An open-source and light-weight VRP with pickup and delivery with time windows (VRPPDTW) modeling package, namely VRPLite, has been developed in this research to provide a high-quality and computationally efficient solution engine for transportation on demand applications. This paper describes the space–time–state modeling process of VRPPDTW using a hyper-network representation. This solution framework can be embedded in a column generation or Lagrangian relaxation framework to handle many general applications. A number of illustrated examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the path search algorithm under various traffic conditions and passenger travel requirements.

Abstract Highly stretchable and electrically conductive thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) nanofibrous composite based on electrospinning for flexible strain sensor and stretchable conductor has been fabricated via in situ polymerization of polyaniline (PANI) on TPU nanofibrous membrane. The PANI/TPU membrane-based sensor could detect a strain from 0 to 160% with fast response and excellent stability. Meanwhile, the TPU composite has good stability and durability. Besides, the composite could be adapted to various non-flat working environments and could maintain opportune conductivity at different operating temperatures. This work provides an easy operating and low-cost method to fabricate highly stretchable and electrically conductive nanofibrous membrane, which could be applied to detect quick and tiny human actions.

The content and component of glucosinolates in edible stems and leaves of eight Chinese kale varieties from Japan and eight varieties from China were determined by HPLC-MS. Simultaneously, the expression levels of glucosinolate biosynthesis pathway genes from four varieties with high and low total glucosinolate contents were analyzed by the qRT-PCR method. Four types of aliphatic glucosinolates (A-GLSs: GRA, SIN, GNA and GER) and indole glucosinolates (I-GLSs: 4-HGBS, GBS, 4-MGBS and NGBS) were detected in the stems and leaves of 16 varieties, and no aromatic glucosinolates (R-GLSs) were detected. A-GLSs account for more than 80.69% of the total content of total glucosinolates (T-GLSs), in which GNA and GRA are the main components of stems and leaves. Among Japanese varieties, QB1 has higher content of A- and T-GLSs, while that of XLB was lower; however, the corresponding varieties were ZH and DSHH in Chinese varieties. Among the above four varieties, the expression levels of SOT16, CYP83B1, SOT17, CYP83A1 and MAM1 genes were significantly higher in the varieties with higher GLSs; the expression levels of SOT16 and CYP83B1 were consistent with the content of I-GLSs; and SOT17, CYP83A1 and MAM1 expression levels were consistent with A-GLSs content. At the same time, the expression levels of SOT16 and CYP83B1 in the leaves were higher than those in the stems. CYP83A1 and MAM1 genes were less expressed in the leaves than in the stems of lower content varieties. It is speculated that these genes may be the key genes regulating GLS biosynthesis in Chinese kale.

Abstract A multi-hierarchical porous polyaniline (PANI) composite which could be used in good performance pressure sensor and adjustable sensitivity gas sensor has been fabricated by a facile in situ polymerization. Commercial grade sponge was utilized as a template scaffold to deposit PANI via in situ polymerization. With abundant interconnected pores throughout the whole structure, the sponge provided sufficient surface for the growth of PANI nanobranches. The flexible porous structure helped the composite to show high performance in pressure detection with fast response and favorable recoverability and gas detection with adjustable sensitivity. The sensing mechanism of the PANI/sponge-based flexible sensor has also been discussed. The results indicate that this work provides a feasible approach to fabricate efficient sensors with advantages of low cost, facile preparation, and easy signal collection.

Particulate reinforcement composite ZrB2p/6061Al was fabricated from Al-K2ZrF6-KBF4 by a direct melt reaction. Laser surface melting was used to improve the surface strength of the in situ ZrB2p/6061Al composite, which includes a series of laser-melted composites with different laser power and cooling conditions processed by a 2-kW yttrium aluminum garnet laser generator. The surface substructure of these laser-treated specimens was investigated by light optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry and transmission electron microscopy. The penetration depth of the molten pool increases with increases in power density, and decreases with increases in the degree of undercooling. The Vickers hardness of the laser-melted composites reached 60–75.2 HV in liquid nitrogen and 56–64.0 HV in air, and increased by 50.4 % and 28 %. Grain refinement with decreased cellular spacing is important in strength performance. Because of a thermocapillary flow vortex and α-Al phase precipitation, nano-ZrB2 particles were distributed along the cellular dendrite boundary as observed by scanning electron microscopy. This was considered to be a key factor responsible for the improved mechanical composite properties. When cooling under liquid nitrogen, the thermal mismatch stress between particles and the matrix generates a high dislocation density. The dislocation grows along the interface between the matrix and particles and provides the laser-melted composites with additional strength.
