Abstract

A developmental disorder that severely damages communicative and social functions, the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) also presents aspects related to mental rigidity, repetitive behavior, and difficulty in abstract reasoning. More, imbalances between excitatory and inhibitory brain states, in addition to cortical connectivity disruptions, are at the source of the autistic behavior. Our main goal consists in unveiling the way by which these local excitatory imbalances and/or long brain connections disruptions are linked to the above mentioned cognitive features. We developed a theoretical model based on Self-Organizing Maps (SOM), where a three-level artificial neural network qualitatively incorporates these kinds of alterations observed in brains of patients with ASD. Computational simulations of our model indicate that high excitatory states or long distance under-connectivity are at the origins of cognitive alterations, as difficulty in categorization and mental rigidity. More specifically, the enlargement of excitatory synaptic reach areas in a cortical map development conducts to low categorization (over-selectivity) and poor concepts formation. And, both the over-strengthening of local excitatory synapses and the long distance under-connectivity, although through distinct mechanisms, contribute to impaired categorization (under-selectivity) and mental rigidity. Our results indicate how, together, both local and global brain connectivity alterations give rise to spoiled cortical structures in distinct ways and in distinct cortical areas. These alterations would disrupt the codification of sensory stimuli, the representation of concepts and, thus, the process of categorization - by this way imposing serious limits to the mental flexibility and to the capacity of generalization in the autistic reasoning.

9. Ensayos de comportamiento y adaptabilidad, para seis especies forestales nativas de la Región Huetar Norte de Costa Rica

Abstract

Dentro del proceso de domesticación de especies forestales nativas de la Región Huetar Norte, ha sido necesario generar información para cada especie sobre: identificación y selección de fuentes semilleras, estudios fenológicos, procesamiento y almacenamiento de semillas, verización y ensayos de plantación. A través de este proyecto, se ha venido trabajando en la investigación aplicada para nueve especies: Almendro amarillo (Dipteryx panamensis), Botarrama (Vochysia ferruginea), Cebo (Virola koschnnyi), Lagarto amarillo (Zanthoxylum mayanum), Pilón (Hyeronima alchorneoides), Vainillo (Stryphnodendron excelsum), Surá (Terminalia oblonga) y Cristóbal (Platymiscium pinnatum). Se han establecido treinta ensayos, distribuidos en cuatro zonas bioclimáticas de la Zona Norte, con el fin de conocer la adaptabilidad y comportamiento de las especies bajo diferentes condiciones de sitio y el manejo silvicultural requerido por estas. Según se ha observado a través del seguimiento de estos ensayos, algunas de estas especies nativas tienen la capacidad de crecer satisfactoriamente en campo abierto, tolerando suelos ácidos, texturas pesadas y niveles de fertilidad bajos. Esto evidencia el potencial que tienen estas especies para la reforestación, no sólo por su comportamiento y adaptación, sino también por la gran aceptación de los involucrados.

Abstract

La revisión de la bibliografía acerca del Cautiverio Feliz de Pineda y Bascuñán introduce al estudio de los procedimientos empleados en la argumentación de este discurso que se propone denunciar los males que aquejan al reino de Chile en el siglo XVII y proponen las medidas necesarias para remediarlos. Los recursos de la argumentación de acusación y defensas propios del discurso judicial-deliberativo, son el objeto central del estudio. The rhetoric for judicial-deliberative reasoning in Cautiverio Feliz by Pineda y Bascuñán. A review of bibliography for Pineda y Bascuñán's Cautiverio Feliz leads to a study of how the narrator denounces the wrongs that affect Chilean royal territory in the XVII century and offers the means to remedy them. This study focuses on the appeals used in the argument for the accusation and defense which are part of the judicial-deliberative reasoning process itself.

Abstract

Se determinó la concentración de arsénico en siete muestras de termoformados y seis muestras de películas flexibles biodegradables, por espectrometría de absorción atómica con generador de hidruros; el método de cuantificación fue curva de calibración a 193,7 nm. Previamente a ésta cuantificación, se optimizó el proceso de digestión ácida mediante reflujo (HNO3:HClO4, relación 3:1, 70°C, 3 horas para termoformados y 45 minutos para películas flexibles) y se implementaron y estandarizaron los parámetros de calidad estadística (Límite de detección y cuantificación, intervalo lineal, sensibilidad de calibración, precisión y exactitud). Los resultados obtenidos fueron analizados empleando el paquete estadístico SPSS. Las concentraciones de arsénico en termoformados fueron detectables en el rango de las partes por billón mientras que las películas flexibles fueron no detectables. Hoy en día, no existe una normativa vigente que establezca los valores permitidos de Arsénico para los biopolímeros analizados.Determinou-se a concentração de arsênio em sete amostras de termoformados e seis amostras de películas flexíveis biodegradáveis, por espectrometria de absorção atômica com gerador de hidretos. O método de quantificação foi por Curva de Calibração a 193,7nm. Previamente a esta quantificação, otimizou-se o processo de digestão ácida mediante refluxo (HNO3:HClO4, relação 3:1, 70°C, 3 horas para termoformados e 45 minutos para películas flexíveis) implementando e padronizando os parâmetros de qualidade estatística (Limite de detecção e quantificação, intervalo linear, sensibilidade de calibração, precisão e exatidão). Os resultados obtidos foram analisados empregando o pacote estatístico SPSS. As concentraçôes de arsênio em termoformados foram detectáveis no intervalo das partes por milhão enquanto as películas flexíveis não foram detectáveis. Hoje em dia, não existe uma normativa vigente que estabeleça os valores permitidos de Arsênio para os biopolímeros analisados.The arsenic concentration of seven thermoformed and six biodegradable flexible films samples were evaluated by atomic absorption spectrometry with generator hydride; the calibration curve at 193,7 nm was the quantification method. Before the experiments, the acid digestion with reflux was optimized (HNO3: HClO4, ratio 3:1, 70°C, 3 hours for thermoformed and 45 minutes for flexible films) and the statistical quality parameters were implemented and standardized (detection and quantification limit, linear range, calibration sensitivity, precision and accuracy). The results were analyzed using SPSS. Arsenic concentrations in thermoformed were detectable in the order of parts per billion whereas flexible films were not detectable. Today, there is no current legislation to establish the permissible values of arsenic for the biopolymers analyzed.

Abstract

Successful reproduction is very important for individuals and for society. Currently, the human health span and lifespan are the object of intense and productive investigation with great achievements, compared to the last century. However, reproduction span does not progress concomitantly with lifespan. Reproductive organs age, decreasing the levels of sexual hormones, which are protectors of health through their action on several organs of the body. Thus, this is the starting point of the organismal decay and infertility. This starting point is easily detected in women. In men, it goes under the surface, undetected, but it goes, nevertheless. Regarding fertility, aging alters the hormonal equilibrium, decreases the potential of reproductive organs, diminishes the quality of the gametes and worsen the reproductive outcomes. All these events happen at a different pace and affecting different organs in women and men. The question is what molecular pathways are involved in reproductive aging and if there is a possible halting or even reversion of the aging events. Answers to all these points will be explained in the present review.
