The potential of autonomous robots to assist humans in emergency situations remains a prominent area of innovation. However, such developments may present profound societal and ethical challenges. Ideally, an active integration of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) allows for harnessing innovation while mitigating the potential negative implications. We present an attempt by an interdisciplinary team with limited exposure to RRI to incorporate the approach into an academic project exploring autonomous robots. Our case study reveals the complexities emerging locally when translating and applying RRI to the procedural aspects and intended project outcomes. We discuss key issues that emerge and how the team navigates through these. We draw on insights from practice-oriented approaches, as in science and technology studies and sociology. We raise social and ethical questions and develop practice-oriented recommendations to facilitate the future integration of RRI into projects.

Abstract Despite recent advances in exfoliated vdW ferromagnets, the widespread application of 2D magnetism requires a Curie temperature (Tc) above room temperature as well as a stable and controllable magnetic anisotropy. Here we demonstrate a large-scale iron-based vdW material Fe4GeTe2 with the Tc reaching ~530 K. We confirmed the high-temperature ferromagnetism by multiple characterizations. Theoretical calculations suggested that the interface-induced right shift of the localized states for unpaired Fe d electrons is the reason for the enhanced Tc, which was confirmed by ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy. Moreover, by precisely tailoring Fe concentration we achieved arbitrary control of magnetic anisotropy between out-of-plane and in-plane without inducing any phase disorders. Our finding sheds light on the high potential of Fe4GeTe2 in spintronics, which may open opportunities for room-temperature application of all-vdW spintronic devices.

In this paper, a design methodology for synchronous reluctance machines (SynRM) working with variable torque and speed profiles was presented. Unlike conventional solutions which size the machine considering a reduced number of working points in order to reduce the computation time, the solution proposed in this paper takes into account all the points which allow for better management of the constraints along the cycle to avoid an oversizing of the machine. To solve this problem with a reduced computation time, the geometry of the motor as well as the control strategy were optimized in two steps. In the first step, the d-q axis stator currents were analytically expressed. In the second step, the geometry was optimized with the use of a genetic algorithm. As an application of this method, the case of a small and low-cost electric vehicle (EV) was chosen with the objective of minimizing both the mass and the energy lost for the standardized urban dynamometer driving schedule (UDDS). The method was based on the use of a 1-D analytical model which was validated by a 2D finite element analysis (FEA).

Calving is a crucial process for the mass loss of outlet glaciers draining the Greenland ice sheet. Moreover, due to a lack of observations, calving contributes to large uncertainties in current glacier flow models and projections. Here we investigate the frequency, volume and style of calving events by using high-resolution terrestrial radar interferometer (TRI) data from six field campaigns, continuous daily and hourly time-lapse images over 6 years and 10-s time-lapse images recorded during two field campaigns. The results demonstrate that the calving front of Eqip Sermia, a fast flowing, highly crevassed outlet glacier in West Greenland, follows a clear seasonal cycle showing a distinct pattern in areas with subglacial discharge plumes, shallow bed topography and during the presence and retreat of proglacial ice mélange. Calving event volume, frequency and style vary strongly over time depending on the state in the seasonal cycle. Strong spatial differences between three distinctive front sectors with differing bed topography, water depth and calving front slope were observed. A distinct increase in calving activity occurs in the early melt season simultaneously when ice mélange disappears and meltwater plumes become visible at the fjord surface adjacent to the ice front. While reduced retreat of the front is observed in shallow areas, accelerated retreat occurred at locations with subglacial meltwater plumes. With the emergence of these plumes at the beginning of the melt season, larger full thickness calving events occur likely due to undercutting of the calving front. Later in the melt season the calving activity at subglacial meltwater plumes is similar to the neighboring areas, suggesting the presence of plumes to become less important for calving. The results highlight the significance of subglacial discharge and bed topography on the front geometry, the temporal variability of the calving process and the variability of calving styles.

The subglacial observatory beneath the Argentière glacier provides a rare opportunity to study the interactions between glacier sliding velocity and subglacial runoff. The sliding velocity has been monitored in this cavity almost continuously since 1997 and the resulting data indicate a decrease in annual sliding velocities over the last two decades. We found close relationships between annual surface velocity, sliding velocity and ice thickness. These relationships indicate that the ice-flow velocity changes do not depend on subglacial water runoff changes at the annual timescale. The seasonal magnitudes of sliding also show a decrease over the last two decades. At the seasonal timescale, sliding velocity increases before or simultaneously with the large runoff increase in May, indicating a distributed drainage system. Conversely, at the end of the melt season, sliding velocity continues to decrease after the runoff returns to low winter values. The simultaneous increases of runoff and sliding velocity occur mainly before the spring transition. Later, sliding velocity generally appears not to be related to water inputs coming from the surface, except for some large accelerations after midAugust that are always associated with periods of rapidly increasing water inputs to the subglacial drainage system.

Polymerization on surfaces is an emerging approach for producing graphene nanoribbons with a tunable bandgap, a promising material for carbon-based electronics. As users become confronted with a deluge of provenance data, dedicated techniques are required to make sense of this kind of information. We present Aggregation by Provenance Types, a provenance graph analysis that is capable of generating provenance graph summaries. It proceeds by converting provenance paths up to some length k to attributes, referred to as provenance types, and by grouping nodes that have the same provenance types. The summary also includes numeric values representing the frequency of nodes and edges in the original graph. A quantitative evaluation and a complexity analysis show that this technique is tractable; with small values of k, it can produce useful summaries and can help detect outliers. We illustrate how the generated summaries can further be used for conformance checking and visualization.

In the field of Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs), a fuel-cell stack usually works together with a battery to improve powertrain performance. In this hybrid-power system, an Energy Management Strategy (EMS) is essential to configure the hybrid-power sources to provide sufficient energy for driving the FCEV in different traffic conditions. The EMS determines the overall performance of the power supply system; accordingly, EMS research has important theoretical significance and application values on the improvement of energy-utilization efficiency and the serviceability of vehicles’ hybrid-power sources. To overcome the deficiency of apparent filtering lag and improve the adaptability of an EMS to different traffic conditions, this paper proposes a novel EMS based on traffic-condition predictions, frequency decoupling and a Fuzzy Inference System (FIS). An Artificial Neural Network (ANN) was designed to predict traffic conditions according to the vehicle’s running parameters; then, a Hull Moving Average (HMA) algorithm, with filter-window width decided by the prediction result, is introduced to split the demanded power and keep low-frequency components in order to meet the load characteristics of the fuel cell; afterward, an FIS was applied to manage power flows of the FCEV’s hybrid-power sources and maintain the State of Change (SoC) of the battery in a predefined range. Finally, an FCEV simulation platform was built with MATLAB/Simulink and comparison simulations were carried out with the standard test cycle of the Worldwide harmonized Light vehicle Test Procedures (WLTPs). Simulation results showed that the proposed EMS could efficiently coordinate the hybrid-power sources and support the FCEV in following the reference speed with negligible control errors and sufficient power supply; the SoC of the battery was also maintained with good adaptability in different driving conditions.

Sustainable energy-based generation systems, such as photovoltaic and wind turbine generation systems, normally adopt inverters to connect to the grid. These power electronic interfaces possess the characteristics of small inertia and small output impedance, which create difficulties to stabilize the voltage and frequency of a distributed power source. To deal with this problem, a Virtual Synchronous Generator (VSG)-based inverter control method is presented in this paper by introducing virtual inertia and damping coefficient into the control loop to emulate the dynamic behavior of a traditional synchronous generator. Based on this VSG control method, a three-layer hierarchical control scheme is further proposed to increase the control accuracy of the voltage and frequency in a VSG-based distributed generation system with parallel inverters. The principle of the VSG control method, the system stability analysis, the design process of the hierarchical control structure, and the frequency/voltage secondary regulation processes are all specified in this paper. Finally, some numerical simulations are carried out and the effectiveness of proposed control scheme is verified by the simulation results analysis.
