Abstract

Abstract Climate change is currently one of humanity’s greatest threats. To help scholars understand the psychology of climate change, we conducted an online quasi-experimental survey on 59,508 participants from 63 countries (collected between July 2022 and July 2023). In a between-subjects design, we tested 11 interventions designed to promote climate change mitigation across four outcomes: climate change belief, support for climate policies, willingness to share information on social media, and performance on an effortful pro-environmental behavioural task. Participants also reported their demographic information (e.g., age, gender) and several other independent variables (e.g., political orientation, perceptions about the scientific consensus). In the no-intervention control group, we also measured important additional variables, such as environmentalist identity and trust in climate science. We report the collaboration procedure, study design, raw and cleaned data, all survey materials, relevant analysis scripts, and data visualisations. This dataset can be used to further the understanding of psychological, demographic, and national-level factors related to individual-level climate action and how these differ across countries.

Abstract

Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all domains of human life, including the economic and social fabric of societies. One of the central strategies for managing public health throughout the pandemic has been through persuasive messaging and collective behaviour change. To help scholars better understand the social and moral psychology behind public health behaviour, we present a dataset comprising of 51,404 individuals from 69 countries. This dataset was collected for the International Collaboration on Social & Moral Psychology of COVID-19 project (ICSMP COVID-19). This social science survey invited participants around the world to complete a series of moral and psychological measures and public health attitudes about COVID-19 during an early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic (between April and June 2020). The survey included seven broad categories of questions: COVID-19 beliefs and compliance behaviours; identity and social attitudes; ideology; health and well-being; moral beliefs and motivation; personality traits; and demographic variables. We report both raw and cleaned data, along with all survey materials, data visualisations, and psychometric evaluations of key variables.

Understanding collective behaviour is an important aspect of managing the pandemic response. Here the authors show in a large global study that participants that reported identifying more strongly with their nation reported greater engagement in public health behaviours and support for public health policies in the context of the pandemic.

7. Algorithmic Transference: People Overgeneralize Failures of AI in the Government

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) is pervading the government and transforming how public services are provided to consumers across policy areas spanning allocation of government benefits, law enforcement, risk monitoring, and the provision of services. Despite technological improvements, AI systems are fallible and may err. How do consumers respond when learning of AI failures? In 13 preregistered studies (N = 3,724) across a range of policy areas, the authors show that algorithmic failures are generalized more broadly than human failures. This effect is termed “algorithmic transference” as it is an inferential process that generalizes (i.e., transfers) information about one member of a group to another member of that same group. Rather than reflecting generalized algorithm aversion, algorithmic transference is rooted in social categorization: it stems from how people perceive a group of AI systems versus a group of humans. Because AI systems are perceived as more homogeneous than people, failure information about one AI algorithm is transferred to another algorithm to a greater extent than failure information about a person is transferred to another person. Capturing AI's impact on consumers and societies, these results show how the premature or mismanaged deployment of faulty AI technologies may undermine the very institutions that AI systems are meant to modernize.

8. Grocery Shopping for America

Abstract

Institutional threats to national identity, from within, i.e., internal threats, and from outside, i.e., external threats, affect sales of brands that are symbolic of a culture, either national or foreign. We suggest self-enchantment as a mediator and the focus on external threat as a mitigator of the adverse effects of internal threats. We test our propositions through six studies that include secondary data analyses and lab experiments. In Study 1, we analyze weekly supermarket scanner data, encompassing sales of over 8,000 brands across more than 1,100 US stores in 2004. We find that sales of American-sounding brands declined in counties that saw higher coverage of the Abu Ghraib torture scandal (internal threat) and sales of non-American-sounding brands decreased in counties with more war causalities (external threat). We use experiments in studies 2 through 4 to show that, (a) self-enchantment mediates the effect of threats on favorability toward the brand, (b) advertisements that refocus attention on how the brand helps to cope with external threats mitigate the negative effects of internal threats for American brands (c) but not for non-American brands. We adopt a multi-disciplinary methodology (qualitative, secondary data, and experimental) to triangulate the findings and ensure generalizability of the results.

Abstract

At the beginning of 2020, COVID-19 became a global problem. Despite all the efforts to emphasize the relevance of preventive measures, not everyone adhered to them. Thus, learning more about the characteristics determining attitudinal and behavioral responses to the pandemic is crucial to improving future interventions. In this study, we applied machine learning on the multinational data collected by the International Collaboration on the Social and Moral Psychology of COVID-19 (N = 51,404) to test the predictive efficacy of constructs from social, moral, cognitive, and personality psychology, as well as socio-demographic factors, in the attitudinal and behavioral responses to the pandemic. The results point to several valuable insights. Internalized moral identity provided the most consistent predictive contribution—individuals perceiving moral traits as central to their self-concept reported higher adherence to preventive measures. Similar results were found for morality as cooperation, symbolized moral identity, self-control, open-mindedness, and collective narcissism, while the inverse relationship was evident for the endorsement of conspiracy theories. However, we also found a non-neglible variability in the explained variance and predictive contributions with respect to macro-level factors such as the pandemic stage or cultural region. 11. AI in the Government: Responses to Failures

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is pervading the government and transforming how public services are provided to consumers—from allocation of government benefits to enforcement of the law, monitoring of risks, and provision of services. Despite technological improvements, AI systems are fallible and may err. How do consumers respond when learning of AI’s failures? In thirteen preregistered studies (N = 3,724) across policy areas, we show that algorithmic failures are generalized more broadly than human failures. We term this effect algorithmic transference, as it is an inferential process that generalizes (i.e., transfers) information about one member of a group to another member of that same group. Rather than reflecting generalized algorithm aversion, algorithmic transference is rooted in social categorization: it stems from how people perceive a group of AI systems versus a group of humans. Because AI systems are perceived as more homogeneous than people, failure information about one AI algorithm is transferred to another algorithm at a higher rate than failure information about a person is transferred to another person. Assessing AI’s impact on consumers and societies, we show how the premature or mismanaged deployment of faulty AI technologies may undermine the very institutions that AI systems are meant to modernize.

Abstract

In efforts to keep ill-behaving consumers in check, managers are increasingly implementing the practice of rating consumers. We develop and test an account of when and why the practice of rating consumers backfires. Study 1 shows that consumers are more likely to misbehave toward service providers after receiving a low rating (versus those who receive a high rating or those who are merely aware that they are being rated). These findings are robust to consumer inexperience. The negative impact of low ratings on subsequent behavior is especially likely to emerge when directed toward consumers (versus service providers; Study 2). Study 3 situates our findings in a real-world context through a survey of Uber customers. Taken together, we offer insight into how firms can realize the benefits of the practice of rating consumers while mitigating its risks.

Abstract

Rapid development and adoption of AI, machine learning, and natural language processing applications challenge managers and policy makers to harness these transformative technologies. In this context, the authors provide evidence of a novel “word-of-machine” effect, the phenomenon by which utilitarian/hedonic attribute trade-offs determine preference for, or resistance to, AI-based recommendations compared with traditional word of mouth, or human-based recommendations. The word-of-machine effect stems from a lay belief that AI recommenders are more competent than human recommenders in the utilitarian realm and less competent than human recommenders in the hedonic realm. As a consequence, importance or salience of utilitarian attributes determine preference for AI recommenders over human ones, and importance or salience of hedonic attributes determine resistance to AI recommenders over human ones (Studies 1–4). The word-of machine effect is robust to attribute complexity, number of options considered, and transaction costs. The word-of-machine effect reverses for utilitarian goals if a recommendation needs matching to a person’s unique preferences (Study 5) and is eliminated in the case of human–AI hybrid decision making (i.e., augmented rather than artificial intelligence; Study 6). An intervention based on the consider-the-opposite protocol attenuates the word-of-machine effect (Studies 7a–b).

14. Advertising a Desired Change: When Process Simulation Fosters (vs. Hinders) Credibility and Persuasion

Ads promising a desired change are ubiquitous in the marketplace. These ads typically include visuals of the starting and ending point of the promised change (“before/after” ads). “Progression” ads, which include intermediate steps in addition to starting and ending points, are much rarer in the marketplace. Across several consumer domains, the authors show an ad-type effect: progression ads foster spontaneous simulation of the process through which the change will happen, which makes these ads more credible and, in turn, more persuasive than before/after ads (Studies 1–3). The authors also show that impairing process simulation and high skepticism moderate the ad-type effect (Studies 4–5). Finally, they show effect reversals: if consumers focus on achieving the desired results quickly, and it is possible to do so, progression ads and the associated process simulation backfire in terms of credibility and persuasion (Studies 6–7). These findings contribute to existing research by identifying conditions under which progression ads have beneficial or disadvantageous effects. These findings have managerial implications because they run counter to current marketing practices, which favor before/after over progression ads.

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms are now able to produce text virtually indistinguishable from text written by humans across a variety of domains. A key question, then, is whether people believe content from AI as much as content from humans. Trust in the (human generated) news media has been decreasing over time and AI is viewed as lacking human desires, and emotions, suggesting that AI news may be viewed as more accurate. Contrary to this, two preregistered experiments conducted on representative U.S. samples (combined N = 4,034) showed that people rated news produced by AI as being less accurate than news produced by humans. When news items were tagged as produced by AI (compared to a human), people were more likely to incorrectly rate them as inaccurate when they were actually true, and more likely to correctly rate them as inaccurate when they were indeed false. These results were robust to experimental paradigm (separate and joint evaluations), news item (actual veracity, age), and several respondent characteristics (e.g., political orientation). This effect is particularly important given the increasing use of AI algorithms in news production, and the associated ethical and governance pressures to disclose their use.

Abstract

Changing collective behaviour and supporting non-pharmaceutical interventions is an important component in mitigating virus transmission during a pandemic. In a large international collaboration (Study 1, N = 49,968 across 67 countries), we investigated self-reported factors that associated with people reported adopting public health behaviours (e.g., spatial distancing and stricter hygiene) and endorsed public policy interventions (e.g., closing bars and restaurants) during the early stage of the pandemic (April-May 2020). Respondents who reported identifying more strongly with their nation consistently reported greater engagement in public health behaviours and support for public health policies. Results were similar for representative and non-representative national samples. Study 2 (N = 42 countries) conceptually replicated the central finding using aggregate indices of national identity (obtained using the World Values Survey) and a measure of actual behaviour change during the pandemic (obtained from Google mobility reports). Higher levels of national identification prior to the pandemic predicted lower mobility during the early stage of the pandemic (r = -.40). We discuss the potential implications of links between national identity, leadership, and public health for managing COVID-19 and future pandemics.

Abstract

Verticality (the position of a physical object along the vertical dimension) is a basic aspect of human life. As such, it is co-opted for multiple metaphorical associations. In this review, building on the conceptual metaphor theory, we examine how the vertical dimension is metaphorically connected with critical constructs such as power, valence, concreteness, direction, and rationality/emotions, with important consequences for consumer experience and response. We introduce the verticality-manipulation taxonomy, which highlights new ways to think about the research on this topic. This taxonomy has five dimensions: the object’s verticality, the viewer’s verticality, the imagined verticality, the vertical associations, and the abstract domains. We then identify open issues and conflicting results in the current literature, and we indicate some insights for further research on this topic. We also summarize the key managerial implications arising from the wealth of research on this topic.

Packaging is a critical aspect of the marketing offer, with many implications for the multi-sensory customer experience. It can affect attention, comprehension of value, perception of product functionality, and also consumption, with important consequences for consumer experience and response. Thus, while it was once viewed as being useful only for product preservation and logistics, package design has evolved into a key marketing tool. We introduce the layered-packaging taxonomy that highlights new ways to think about product packaging. This taxonomy has two dimensions: the physicality dimension, which is composed of the outer–intermediate–inner packaging layers, and the functionality dimension, which is composed of the purchase–consumption packaging layers. We then build on this taxonomy to present an integrative conceptualization of the sensory aspects of package design as they affect key stages of customer experience.

Abstract

Emotion and rationality are fundamental elements of human life. They are abstract concepts, often difficult to define and grasp. Thus throughout the history of Western society, the head and the heart, concrete and identifiable elements, have been used as symbols of rationality and emotion. Drawing on the conceptual metaphor framework, we propose that people understand the abstract concepts of rationality and emotion using knowledge of a more concrete concept--the vertical difference between the head and heart. In six studies, we show a deep-seated conceptual metaphorical relationship linking rationality with "up" or "higher" and emotion with "down" or "lower." We show that the association between verticality and rationality/emotion affects how consumers perceive information and thereby has downstream consequences on attitudes and preferences. We find the association to be most influential when consumers are unaware of it and when it applies to an unfamiliar stimulus. Because all visual formats--from the printed page to screens on a television, computer, or smartphone--entail a vertical placement, this association has important managerial implications. Abstract

Diagnosing COVID-19 and treating its complications remains a challenge. This review reflects the perspective of some of the Dragon (IMI 2-call 21, #101005122) research consortium collaborators on the utility of bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) in COVID-19. BAL has been proposed as a potentially useful diagnostic tool to increase COVID-19 diagnosis sensitivity. In both critically ill and non-critically ill COVID-19 patients, BAL has a relevant role in detecting other infections or supporting alternative diagnoses and can change management decisions in up to two-thirds of patients. BAL is used to guide steroid and immunosuppressive treatment and to narrow or discontinue antibiotic treatment, reducing the use of unnecessary broad antibiotics. Moreover, cellular analysis and novel multi-omics techniques on BAL are of critical importance for understanding the microenvironment and interaction between epithelial cells and immunity, revealing novel potential prognostic and therapeutic targets. The BAL technique has been described as safe for both patients and healthcare workers in more than a thousand procedures reported to date in the literature. Based on these preliminary studies, we recognize that BAL is a feasible procedure in COVID-19 known or suspected cases, useful to properly guide patient management, and has great potential for research.

Abstract

Periodontitis is linked to the onset and progression of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), an epidemiologically frequent and clinically aggressive malignancy. In this context, Fusobacterium (F.) nucleatum and Porphyromonas (P.) gingivalis, two bacteria that cause periodontitis, are found in OSCC tissues as well as in oral premalignant lesions, where they exert pro-tumorigenic activities. Since the two bacteria are present also in endodontic diseases, playing a role in their pathogenesis, here we analyze the literature searching for information on the impact that endodontic infection by P. gingivalis or F. nucleatum could have on cellular and molecular events involved in oral carcinogenesis. Results from the reviewed papers indicate that infection by P. gingivalis and/or F. nucleatum triggers the production of inflammatory cytokines and growth factors in dental pulp cells or periodontal cells, affecting the survival, proliferation, invasion, and differentiation of OSCC cells. In addition, the two bacteria and the cytokines they induce halt the differentiation and stimulate the proliferation and invasion of stem cells populating the dental pulp or the periodontium. Although most of the literature confutes the possibility that bacteria-induced endodontic inflammatory diseases could impact on oral carcinogenesis, the papers we have analyzed and discussed herein recommend further investigations on this topic.

Abstract

We suggest that a consideration of consumer self-evaluations is fundamental to understanding the conditions under which it is more advantageous to present person or product pictures in print advertisements. We build on the basic human motives of self-enhancement and self-verification to propose that the specific self-esteem level of consumers, in the domain relevant for the category, differentially affects their responses to picture type. Specifically, for consumers with low (high) domain-specific self-esteem, depicting a product (person) in the advertisement enhances attitudes toward the advertisement more than depicting a person (product). In two studies, we demonstrate the proposed matching relationships using two different domains of consumer self-evaluation: appearance self-esteem and academic self-esteem. We also show that increased and more fluent generation of self-related mental imagery drives the observed improvement in attitudes toward the advertisement. Our findings suggest direct implications for advertising design.

Purpose– Currently, in the literature, words such as “corporate image”, “projected image”, “construed image”, “reputation”, “organizational identity”, and “organizational culture” are often confused and superimposed. This creates a conceptual mismatch that leads to results that are hard to compare. Moreover, this leads to difficulty in individuating the correct tools to investigate these constructs. Part of this confusion is due to the lack of a framework shared by different literatures. The aim of this paper is firstly to propose a reasoned review of the literatures related to these constructs. Secondly, the authors propose a new framework and a standard terminology, in which reputation is the wider construct that includes and relates to the others.Design/methodology/approach– The authors performed an extensive and multidisciplinary review in the 12 most used databases within corporate communication, organizational psychology, marketing, organizational studies, management, and business. A semiotic and relational approach was implemented asmodus operandi.Findings– The paper builds on the previous literature, clarifying labels and constructs and identifying a standard terminology to which future studies can refer in order to facilitate a multidisciplinary dialog along different disciplines.Originality/value– To the authors' knowledge, this is the first review to take into consideration all of the seven constructs together and relate them within one framework. Moreover, it uses a novel approach in seeing “reputation” as an umbrella construct under which all the other constructs are grouped and included.

Ancora troppo marginalmente, allo stato attuale degli studi, è stata indagata la figura di Augusta Ghidiglia Quintavalle, storica dell’arte che tanta parte ebbe per lo studio, la valorizzazione, la conservazione e la tutela delle opere d’arte emliane fra i primissimi anni Cinquanta e tutti gli anni Settanta del secolo scorso. Funzionario di soprintendenza, soprintendente, ordinatrice di Gallerie pubbliche come l’Estense di Modena o la Nazionale di Parma, la Ghidiglia Quintavalle fu a partire da quegli stessi anni animatrice e promotrice di numerosi restauri e azioni conservative, specificatamente riguardanti l’immenso e prezioso patrimonio pittorico murale che ebbe il privilegio di governare per diversi decenni. Cantieri che favorirono la scoperta di inediti e l’allestimento di mostre temporanee che, criticamente, si inserirono in quella che nei manuali di storia del restauro viene definita la "stagione degli stacchi" e della “caccia” alle sinopie. The figure of Augusta Ghidiglia Quintavalle, the art historian who played such an important role in the study, valorisation, conservation and protection of Emilian works of art between the early 1950s and the 1970s, has still been investigated too marginally in the current state of studies. A superintendency official, superintendent, and ordinator of public galleries such as the Estense in Modena or the Nazionale in Parma, Ghidiglia Quintavalle was, starting from those same years, the animator and promoter of numerous restorations and conservation actions, specifically regarding the immense and precious heritage of mural paintings that she had the privilege of governing for several decades. Sites that favoured the discovery of unpublished works and the staging of temporary exhibitions that, critically, were part of what is referred to in restoration history manuals as the "season of the detachments" and the "hunt" for sinopites.

A partire dalla seconda metà degli anni Cinquanta, a seguito delle numerose Mostre di opere d’arte restaurate allestite presso la Galleria dell’Accademia, ma soprattutto di quelle dedicate esclusivamente agli affreschi staccati che, invece, troveranno sede al Forte di Belvedere (1957, 1958, 1969, 1966), il progetto di creare a Firenze un mega-museo degli affreschi si fece sempre più concreto. La “stagione degli stacchi” e quella della “caccia alle sinopie” era giunta al suo apice, e quell’idea, sostenuta, fra gli altri, da Ugo Procacci e Mario Salmi, trovava larghi consensi anche nell’opinione pubblica. Inizialmente, la sede deputata ad ospitare il museo, avrebbe dovuto essere il chiostro del convento del Carmine, poi si pensò agli ambienti occupati dall’Archivio di Stato agli Uffizi, infine al Forte di Belvedere, luogo consacrato, come detto, alla fruizione degli affreschi staccati per ben quattro esposizioni che incontrarono un grande successo di pubblico e di critica. Sarà l’alluvione del 1966 a fare da spartiacque avviando alla definitiva rinuncia a un disegno museale che, per diversi motivi non riuscirà mai a decollare completamente From the second half of the 1950s, following the numerous "exhibitions of restored works of art" set up at the Accademia Gallery, but in particolar after the four reviews dedicated exclusively to detached frescoes which will be held in the Forte di Belvedere (1957, 1958, 1959, 1966), the project to create a museum of frescoes in Florence became more concrete. The so-called “stagione degli stacchi”, a huge operation organized to remove and safeguard wall paintings in Italy, together with the “hunt” for sinopie, the preparatory drawings realized by masters under the painted plaster, had reached its peak, and the idea, put forward, among others, by Ugo Procacci and Mario Salmi, was also widely supported by public opinion. Initially, the location assigned to host the museum, should have been the Carmine convent, then the rooms of the Uffizi Gallery and finally the architecture of Forte di Belvedere. It will be the flood of 1966 changing evetrihing starting the definitive renunciation of an innovative museum project which, however, for various reasons will never be able to take off completely.

Abstract

Real-time visualization and quantification of viruses released by a cell are crucial to further decipher infection processes. Kinetics studies at the single-cell level will circumvent the limitations of bulk assays with asynchronous virus replication. We have implemented a “viro-fluidic” method, which combines microfluidics and virology at single-cell and single-virus resolutions. As an experimental model, we used standard cell lines producing fluorescent HIV-like particles (VLPs). First, to scale the strategy to the single-cell level, we validated a sensitive flow virometry system to detect VLPs in low concentration samples (≥104 VLPs/mL). Then, this system was coupled to a single-cell trapping device to monitor in real-time the VLPs released, one at a time, from single cells under cell culture conditions. Our results revealed an average production rate of 50 VLPs/h/cell similar to the rate estimated for the same cells grown in population. Thus, the virus-producing capacities of the trapped cells were preserved and its real-time monitoring was accurate. Moreover, single-cell analysis revealed a release of VLPs with stochastic bursts with typical time intervals of few minutes, revealing the existence of limiting step(s) in the virus biogenesis process. Our tools can be applied to other pathogens or to extracellular vesicles to elucidate the dissemination mechanisms of these biological nanoparticles.

PurposeThis paper aims to present an innovative model to evaluate the quality of the learning outcome in vocational education and training (VET) considering a wide approach that includes, in particular, stakeholders' expectations and perceptions.Design/methodology/approachThe Expero model was implemented in various kinds of vocational schools and educational institutions in different European countries.FindingsThe model was validated through review by several international experts and by translation into a quality standard certification model.Research limitations/implicationsExpero needs a larger testing phase in non‐European countries to validate its appropriateness. Different vocational systems in non‐EU countries could enrich and widen the model in terms of transferability and sustainability as well as fostering cross‐educational requirements and needs that may impact the quality of the learning outcome. The Expero model is mainly dedicated to vocational education and, in its current form, is not suitable to be applied to other levels of education (i.e. primary or secondary). Meanwhile, it seems promising in terms of its application in higher education institutions, in workplace learning, and in continuous professional training.Practical implicationsExpero permits analysis of the quality of the learning outcome, which constitutes the prior mission of a school. Being dedicated to the vocational sector, Expero is based on stakeholder evaluation, including school personnel, trainees, industries, companies and external bodies interested in a school's results. Applying the Expero model, a school can analyse its strengths and weaknesses in a systematic way; strengthening – or even creating – a collaborative network with its stakeholders finalised in improving learning outcome.Originality/valueAmong the various opportunities a school has to perform a quality assessment (ISO 9000, EFQM, CAF), Expero is the first model focused on the quality of the learning outcome based on multi‐stakeholder data analysis.

This paper aims to find and test a new instrument, named “Multi‐Sensory Sort” (MuSeS).Design/methodology/approachMuSeS, a direct methodology of exploring the consumer's symbolic universe and the unconscious expectations, is composed of a set of projective techniques based on multi‐sensory stimuli.FindingsThe results showed how MuSeS allows one to collect in‐depth data, otherwise difficult to obtain through other kinds of surveys.Practical implicationsMuSeS is able to measure both the consumers' perceptions about the brand image concept (its potentials) and the characteristics that the customer wishes to find in the brand image (brand image future development).Originality/valueMost of the tools created to investigate the brand image are based on questionnaires with attitude scales; this assumes that the brand image is a conscious and fully verbalized construct. The paper started from another assumption, trying to measure the non‐verbal and the unconscious brand image aspects, using instruments derived both from psychology and marketing.

Abstract

We propose that features of static visuals can lead to perceived movement (via dynamic imagery) and prepare the observer for action. We operationalize our research within the context of warning sign icons and show how subtle differences in iconography can affect human behavioral response. Across five studies incorporating multiple methodologies and technologies (click-data heat maps, driving simulations, surveys, reaction time, and eye tracking), we show that warning sign icons that evoke more (vs. less) perceived movement lead to a quicker propensity to act because they suggest greater risk to oneself or others and increase attentional vigilance. Icons used in our studies include children crossing signs near schools, wet floor signs in store settings, and shopping cart crossings near malls. Our findings highlight the importance of incorporating dynamic elements into icon design to promote imagery and thereby elicit desired and responsible consumer behavior.

Abstract

Growing cells adopt common basic strategies to achieve optimal resource allocation under limited resource availability. Our current understanding of such "growth laws" neglects degradation, assuming that it occurs slowly compared to the cell cycle duration. Here we argue that this assumption cannot hold at slow growth, leading to important consequences. We propose a simple framework showing that at slow growth protein degradation is balanced by a fraction of "maintenance" ribosomes. Consequently, active ribosomes do not drop to zero at vanishing growth, but as growth rate diminishes, an increasing fraction of active ribosomes performs maintenance. Through a detailed analysis of compiled data, we show that the predictions of this model agree with data from E. coli and S. cerevisiae. Intriguingly, we also find that protein degradation increases at slow growth, which we interpret as a consequence of active waste management and/or recycling. Our results highlight protein turnover as an underrated factor for our understanding of growth laws across kingdoms.

Abstract

Eriocheir sinensis, Chinese Crab or Chinese Mitten Crab is a catadromous species belonging to the Varunidae family, native to river and estuarine areas of North and South East China and Korea. At European level, E. sinensis is widespread in the main water basins of Central and Northern Europe and, since 2016, it has been included in the list of invasive species important for the European Union and subjected to confinement and eradication measures which include the prohibition of collection, transit and placing on the market of live specimens (Regulation (EC) N° 1143/2014). The Chinese Crab can represent a significant danger for the local ecosystem and for the native biota as well as contributing to the appearance of hydrogeological instability phenomena resulting from the intense excavation and erosion of the riverbanks.The first finding of 5 kg of live specimens of Eriocheir sinensis was recorded in the official control by the UFS (Functional Simple Unit) veterinary public health and food safety of the “ASL Toscana centro” at an ethnic catering establishment. The specimens were subjected to seizure, photographed, identified morphologically, and subjected to euthanasia and destruction in accordance with the European requirements for welfare and management of animal by-products.From the sanitary point of view, the dangers associated with the consumption of this crab are mainly biological and chemical therefore, risk communication is fundamental, not only at the level of the competent authorities in the sector, but also for the food business operators.

Abstract

In the context of clinical surgery of veterinary medicine, medieval podiatry played a key role both for disease incidence and for evolution, and therefore the success, of therapeutic treatments. The paper aims to investigate the surgical instruments used by the medieval veterinarian for his daily activities in the field of podiatry. To do this, the authors use both documentary and iconographic sources putting them in parallel. The first provides information on the choice of instruments, their nomenclature and their usage, and the analysis of iconographic sources allows the critical reconstruction of the actual instruments favoring a concrete visualization of both the technical characteristics of the instrument and of its use. The final objective is a critical evaluation of the effectiveness of podological practice of the time.

Abstract

Luca Ciancio discusses Luigi Luzzatti’s article starting from a reflection about the ubiquity of the biological metaphors used by him in order to reason on the method of constitutional science. Luzzatti bases on the classic distinction between historic "organic" constitutions, i.e. the British one, which is a true and spontaneous incarnation of the "national character", and abstract "mechanic" constitutions, artificially imposed by reason and therefore instable. In the late positivistic era the same recourse to a metaphorical evolutionistic repertoire, like the one of the embryologic dynamic of the constitutions, on the one defines hand Luzzatti’s intent as a subscription to historicism and organicism, which is typical of his epoch, and on the other hand the free recourse to biology allows him to discuss cognitive strategies that are useful to constitutional science and freed from a dogmatic notion of scientificity. Through Luzzatti's text, though, Ciancio underlines the meaning and the function of an evolutionistic paradigm which defined in a rigid and ideological way the historic investigation and which Luzzatti uses to recall an idea of order, restoration and continuity

Abstract

To understand the complex relationship governing transcript abundance and the level of the encoded protein, we integrate genome-wide experimental data of ribosomal density on mRNAs with a novel stochastic model describing ribosome traffic dynamics during translation elongation. This analysis reveals that codon arrangement, rather than simply codon bias, has a key role in determining translational efficiency. It also reveals that translation output is governed both by initiation efficiency and elongation dynamics. By integrating genome-wide experimental data sets with simulation of ribosome traffic on all Saccharomyces cerevisiae ORFs, mRNA-specific translation initiation rates are for the first time estimated across the entire transcriptome. Our analysis identifies different classes of mRNAs characterised by their initiation rates, their ribosome traffic dynamics, and by their response to ribosome availability. Strikingly, this classification based on translational dynamics maps onto key gene ontological classifications, revealing evolutionary optimisation of translation responses to be strongly influenced by gene function.
