Background: Dental implant rehabilitation has significantly advanced prosthodontics by providing a reliable, long-lasting solution for missing teeth. This systematic review compares the clinical, technical, and biological outcomes of cemented versus screw-retained single dental implant restorations based on randomized clinical trials (RCTs). Materials and Methods: This review included recent human and in vitro studies focusing on the keywords “cemented vs. screw-retained” and “dental implant”. Eight studies met the inclusion criteria, which investigated parameters, including implant survival rate, bleeding on probing (BOP), probing depth, plaque index, marginal bone loss (MBL), cytokine concentrations, mechanical complications, esthetic outcomes, patient satisfaction, treatment time, and technical failures. Results: The primary outcomes, BOP and MBL, did not statistically differ between cemented and screw-retained implants (p-values for MBL and BOP are 0.5813 and 0.8093, respectively). The reviewed studies, including RCTs, split-mouth studies, and clinical evaluations, demonstrated comparable clinical, technical, and biological outcomes between the two restoration methods. Conclusions: Screw-retained and cemented dental implant restorations exhibit similar clinical, technical, and biological outcomes. Screw-retained restorations offer advantages such as retrievability, ease of repair, and predictable passive fit, while cemented restorations provide superior esthetics. The risk of peri-implant complications due to residual cement in cemented restorations must be considered. Future research should explore long-term stability and the impact of different prosthetic protocols on peri-implant health.

Background: This systematic review aims to critically assess the literature on the debonding process of orthodontic brackets from enamel surfaces. The review evaluates Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) to determine the effectiveness and implications of various debonding techniques and materials. Methods: The study followed PRISMA guidelines, selecting RCTs published from 1999 onwards that compared the outcomes of various orthodontic bracket debonding techniques. Selection criteria included studies utilizing human teeth, with outcomes such as enamel surface roughness and Adhesive Remnant Index (ARI) analyzed. Data sources included PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library. Results: Out of 1,587 records identified, five studies met the inclusion criteria. These studies provided comparative data on the effectiveness of various debonding techniques, including tungsten carbide and diamond burs, in minimizing enamel damage and optimizing adhesive removal. Findings indicated that tungsten carbide burs produced the least enamel roughness. Discussion: Utilizing tungsten carbide burs for debonding orthodontic brackets significantly minimizes enamel surface roughness and potential damage, thereby enhancing the preservation of enamel integrity post-treatment. The systematic review highlights current debonding techniques are effective in adhesive removal, and the choice of instrument significantly affects enamel integrity and clinical outcomes. The findings support the need for continuous improvement and innovation in removing braces to improve orthodontic treatment results and patient satisfaction.

This manuscript introduces a novel two-step technique for fabricating mobile dentures post-extraction to streamline prosthodontic rehabilitation. The study utilizes various materials, including dental polymers, metals, ceramics, and composite materials, each chosen for their unique properties that contribute to the final prosthesis’s functionality, durability, and esthetics. The detailed procedure involves an initial occlusal registration immediately following tooth extraction, capturing precise occlusal relationships and a comprehensive dental impression. This approach reduces clinical visits and leverages optimal alveolar ridge morphology. The expected results highlight the efficiency of the technique, reducing treatment time without compromising quality and potentially improving patient satisfaction and prosthodontic outcomes. This innovative method conclusively promises rapid, efficient, and patient-centered dental rehabilitation, emphasizing the need for future research to validate its effectiveness and explore long-term outcomes.

A 65-year-old Caucasian male was referred to an endodontic specialist practice in a private clinic in December 2019 for the management of an asymptomatic, radiolucent lesion located at the cervical level of the distal root of his right lower first molar, noticed during a routine periapical radiograph. After an accurate evaluation with cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), the subgingival lesion was diagnosed as a supracrestal external cervical resorption (ECR), with a circumferential spread ⩽90°, confined to dentine without pulp involvement. The lesion was treated with the following sequence: (1) a full flap accessed the ECR, (2) the granulomatous tissue was removed from the root area, (3) the cavity was refreshed and filled with a well-refined and polished resin composite, (4) the flap was sutured at the cemento-enamel junction. A mandibular CBCT scan was performed before treatment, right after treatment, and 3 years postoperatively. Compared to the 3-year posttreatment CBCT scan, the immediate posttreatment one, revealed the absence of bone loss and an unexpected coronal bone remodeling with new bone formation over the treated lesion.

The case report describes rehabilitating congenitally missing lateral incisors using fibre-reinforced composite Maryland bridges for provisional restoration and Osstem TSIII (Osstem®, Seoul, South Korea) implants, zirconia abutments, and disilicate lithium crowns for definitive repair. The discussion covers essential aspects of aesthetic dental implant restoration, including materials, types of dental implants, surgical techniques for soft tissue enhancement, and prosthetic and impression techniques. The study emphasises the importance of selecting appropriate materials, employing advanced surgical procedures, and utilising accurate prosthetic and impression techniques to enhance the aesthetic outcomes of dental implant restorations. A multidisciplinary approach and patient-centred care are essential for successful aesthetic dental implant restorations. The methodology presented in this manuscript demonstrates its effectiveness in achieving optimal outcomes while minimising stress on soft tissues and improving patient comfort and satisfaction. This case report contributes to dental implant restoration, providing evidence-based techniques for achieving aesthetic and functional success.

Removable functional appliances (RFA) have long been employed to address Class II malocclusion, particularly in cases involving a significant overjet, a deep bite, and molar class 2 issues. Notably divergent from RFA, myofunctional appliances (PMA) offer several distinct advantages, including applicability in noncompliant patients, adaptability in cases of dental element scarcity, suitability for allergic patients, impression-free utilization, and reduced costs. Within the array of clinical cases treated with PMA, we chose to present an intricate case involving an 8-year-old girl. Our aim was to showcase the immediate effects of PMA and to track the progress over a two-year span. Following one year of PMA treatment, substantial improvements were observed in a large overjet, a deep bite, and lip incompetence—factors often associated with elevated risks of dental trauma. These improvements not only positively impacted dental aesthetics but also engendered normalized nasal respiration and diminished palatal impingement, thereby enhancing the overall quality of life. Upon reaching the two-year mark, the clinical status pertaining to Class II malocclusion remained stable. Further treatment was advised in a subsequent phase to refine imperfections in the dental arch form. Nonetheless, comprehensive data from the prolonged follow-up of patients treated with these appliances are essential to establish robust scientific evidence concerning their long-term efficacy.

New surgical techniques using narrow, tilted implants positioned through a magneto-dynamic tool in guided surgery for a Toronto restoration. A 69-year-old woman wanted fixed rehabilitation to replace her removable complete dentures. A cone-beam computed tomography showed significant bone resorption in both the maxillary and mandibular regions. The plan was to load the entire upper arch with six implants immediately, while removable partial dentures were recommended for the lower jaw. The guided surgery project was aligned with the new dentures, and the laboratory created a printed cast with dental implant analogues in planned positions. A metal-reinforced denture was constructed, and surgery was performed to place six narrow implants using the magneto-dynamic instrument. The denture was directly screwed onto multi-unit abutments. Final rehabilitation was completed after 6 months. Narrow implants can be a good option for fixed, full-arch rehabilitations. Further research is needed to confirm these findings on a larger scale.

The traditional approaches to teaching children about dental health may not be successful since they may not be able to keep their interest. Metaverse technology offers a promising alternative, allowing for the design of engaging and immersive worlds that can effectively educate children about oral health. Despite the growing interest in the use of metaverse technology in healthcare, there is a lack of comprehensive reviews on its potential for oral health promotion in children. This review aims to fill this gap by providing an overview of the current state of metaverse-based oral health promotion for children, discussing its benefits and challenges, and highlighting its potential for improving children’s oral health. By conducting this review, the authors hope to provide new information on the potential of metaverse-based oral health promotion for children and to contribute to the ongoing discussion on the use of metaverse technology in healthcare. This review may also provide valuable insights for dental organizations and practitioners interested in using metaverse technology to promote oral health and healthy living among children.

This report aims to clinically evaluate the feasibility of a novel biological-oriented digital impression method for teeth prepared with a vertical preparation technique. Something that makes this case unique is that the definitive impression is taken without cord displacement, reducing the invasiveness for the patient. In addition, dental technicians can reproduce the exact emergence profile of the temporary restoration used to reshape the soft tissue contours and define the accurate finish line at the established prosthetic junction, potentially avoiding the aesthetic and biological issues of the double-cord technique. The finish line and emergence profile are transferred using the temporary restoration through a simple CAD procedure performed using the same software used to take the impression. This makes the proposed biological-oriented digital impression technique (BODIT) easy to perform, avoiding adjunctive time and costs for clinicians and patients. Conclusions: Finally, patients' satisfaction could be significantly improved.

Abstract Aim This study was performed to histologically evaluate peri-coronal tissues of partially impacted and erupted third molars that did not exhibit pathologic peri-coronal radiolucency. Materials and methods Healthy patients with erupted or partially erupted (with part or all of the dental crown present in the oral cavity) mandibular third molars (classified as IA and IIA according to the Pell and Gregory classification) and vertically positioned (according to the Winter classification or erupted third molars) associated with peri coronal radiolucency of equal to or less than 2.5 mm. Associated with third molar surgery, tissue sampling from the distal area was performed, which was subjected to an anatomopathological examination to determine the histological nature. Results One hundred teeth (100 patients) were selected, and 100 specimens were analyzed. 53% of the sample were included in the non-pathological group and 47% showed pathological changes (fibrotic tissue (n 15), periodontal cyst-like (n 9), squamous epithelial metaplasia (4 cases), islands of odontogenic epithelial residues organized micro-cyst with keratocystic/ameloblastic appearance (4 cases), granulation tissue (n 8), giant cell tumour (n 4) and lobular capillary hemangioma (n 4)). Pathological changes did not have differences in incidence between the gender (p value = 0.85) and did not show any correlation with age, (p value = 0,96). Conclusions These findings suggest that radiographic appearance may not be a reliable indicator of the absence of disease within a dental follicle. Therefore, clinicians should pay attention to or follow up on even peri-coronal radiolucency of less than 2.5 mm.

Abstract Background Numerous clinical variables may influence early marginal bone loss (EMBL), including surgical, prosthetic and host-related factors. Among them, bone crest width plays a crucial role: an adequate peri-implant bone envelope has a protective effect against the influence of the aforementioned factors on marginal bone stability. The aim of the present study was to investigate the influence of buccal and palatal bone thickness at the time of implant placement on EMBL during the submerged healing period. Methods Patients presenting a single edentulism in the upper premolar area and requiring implant-supported rehabilitation were enrolled following inclusion and exclusion criteria. Internal connection implants (Twinfit, Dentaurum, Ispringen, Germany) were inserted after piezoelectric implant site preparation. Mid-facial and mid-palatal thickness and height of the peri-implant bone were measured immediately after implant placement (T0) with a periodontal probe and recorded to the nearest 0.5 mm. After 3 months of submerged healing (T1), implants were uncovered and measurements were repeated with the same protocol. Kruskal-Wallis test for independent samples was used to compare bone changes from T0 to T1. Multivariate linear regression models were built to assess the influence of different variables on buccal and palatal EMBL. Results Ninety patients (50 females, 40 males, mean age 42.9 ± 15.1 years), treated with the insertion of 90 implants in maxillary premolar area, were included in the final analysis. Mean buccal and palatal bone thickness at T0 were 2.42 ± 0.64 mm and 1.31 ± 0.38 mm, respectively. Mean buccal and palatal bone thickness at T1 were 1.92 ± 0.71 mm and 0.87 ± 0.49 mm, respectively. Changes in both buccal and palatal thickness from T0 to T1 resulted statistically significant (p = 0.000). Changes in vertical bone levels from T0 to T1 resulted not significant both on buccal (mean vertical resorption 0.04 ± 0.14 mm; p = 0.479) and palatal side (mean vertical resorption 0.03 ± 0.11 mm; p = 0.737). Multivariate linear regression analysis showed a significant negative correlation between vertical bone resorption and bone thickness at T0 on both buccal and palatal side. Conclusion The present findings suggest that a bone envelope > 2 mm on the buccal side and > 1 mm on the palatal side may effectively prevent peri-implant vertical bone resorption following surgical trauma. Trial Registration The present study was retrospectively recorded in a public register of clinical trials ( www.clinicaltrials.gov - NCT05632172) on 30/11/2022.

ObjectiveThe present study investigated the clinical potential of managing anxiety during dental procedures to reduce acute attacks in patients with hereditary angioedema (HAE). HAE is a rare disease, little known to physicians and dentists, but with an increased hospitalization rate over the years. HAE is due to a deficiency/dysfunction of the C1 esterase inhibitor, leading to increased vascular permeability. Recommendations for HAE management include long-term and short-term prophylaxis and treatment of acute attacks, but the importance of anxiety control is underestimated.Materials and methodsThe authors reviewed the literature to provide the scientific community with an overview of possible protocols for managing anxiety in dental practice and their effectiveness. Management can be used in prosthetics, periodontal and implant surgery, endodontics, and oral surgery.DiscussionsOur analysis shows that although there are few articles in the indexed literature, protocols for managing anxiety in HAE patients in dentistry will become increasingly prevalent in the daily clinical practice of dentists due to its benefits.ConclusionsThe benefits and better control of intraoperative complications and risks may lead clinicians to use sedation, assessment, or anxiety control techniques in daily clinical practice to reduce such attacks. Clinical relevance: This study suggests that controlling and managing anxiety can help prevent and reduce acute angioedema attacks.

Rehabilitative dentistry has made enormous progress in recent years, not only due to the advent of new implant-prosthetic methods, but also thanks to new information technologies that support the doctor. This study aims to present a new implant protocol that involves the application of bioengineering methods. With the application of the finite element analysis, it is possible to evaluate the distribution of the forces of a fixture and possible implant rehabilitation on each patient, even before performing the surgery. This protocol provides for the combination of radiographic images and three-dimensional files to obtain predictable results on possible rehabilitation, guiding its planning in the best possible way. Surely, the evolution of machines and computers will enable the surgeon to carry out and maintain these protocols in a chair-side manner, and to carry out safe and predictable rehabilitations.

Background: Digital technologies enable the accurate replication of occlusion, which is pivotal for stability in maximum intercuspation and dynamic occlusion. CAD softwares generates standardized occlusal morphologies requiring significant adjustments. The consideration of individual mandibular movements during restoration leads to better functional integration. This pilot study evaluates the efficacy of a novel, fully digital protocol for occlusal analysis recording in prosthodontics. Methods: Patients needing single or multiple metal-free restorations were included. Teeth underwent horizontal finish line preparation, while restorations on implants were either directly screwed or used multi-unit abutments. A digital impression (Trios 3 Intraoral Scanner) captured the mouth’s elements. Dynamic occlusion was recorded via Patient Specific Motion (PSM). After the placement and functionalization of temporary restorations, subsequent scans included various elements, and CAD software (Dental system) was used for the restoration design. Restorations were milled in monolithic zirconia, pressed from CAD/CAM-milled wax, and sintered. Results: An evaluation of 52 restorations in 37 patients indicated high accuracy in restorations manufactured via the fully digital workflow. Monolithic zirconia was predominantly used. Subtractive (17.3%) and additive (7.7%) occlusal adjustments were mainly chairside. Conclusion: This study underscores the efficacy of meticulous verification measures and a centric contact system in reducing the need for clinical occlusal refinements in prosthetic restorations.

Titanium dental implants have had new competitors in recent years, such as fixtures made of zirconia, which promise better aesthetics. The purpose of this study is to evaluate their mechanical performance in silico (Finite Element Analysis). The investigation was performed on a single tooth Patent™ Dental Implant (Zircon Medical®, Altendorf, Switzerland) in two configurations: without offset (Test I) and with offset (Test II, 1.5 mm within the cortical bone). The Patent Implant system consists of two components: the implant with integrated abutment and the fibreglass post. The components of the dental implants were tested using a compression load of 400 N along the implant axis. The results showed that the chewing load generates stress distribution on the bone, therefore, the offset configuration should be avoided.

Abstract Objective Implantology represents the gold standard for oral rehabilitation, unfortunately, often, despite there are no local contraindications to this type of rehabilitation, there are uncertainties regarding the general health of our patients. Many patients nowadays take bisphosphonate drugs, often without first seeking advice from an oral surgeon or a dentist. The purpose of this review is precisely to highlight any contraindications to this type of treatment reported in the literature, in patients who take or have taken bisphosphonate drugs. Methods For this study the scientific information sources were consulted using as search terms “(“bisphosphonate AND “dental implant”)”, obtaining 312 results, these were subsequently skimmed according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, and further evaluated their relevance to the study and the presence of requested outcomes. Results Only 9 manuscripts (RCTs, Multicentric studies and Clinical Trials) were included in this review, as they respected the parameters of this review, they were analyzed and it was possible to draw important results from them. Surely from this study it is understood that the use of bisphosphonate drugs does not represent an absolute contraindication to implant therapy, it is evident how adequate pharmacological prophylaxis, and an adequate protocol reduce the risks regarding implant failures. Furthermore, the values of marginal bone loss over time seem, even if not statistically significant, to be better in implant rehabilitation with bisphosphonate drugs association. Only a few molecules like risedronate, or corticosteroids, or some conditions like smoking or diabetes have shown a high risk of surgical failure. Conclusion Although this study considered different studies for a total of 378 patients and at least 1687 different dental implants, showing better results in some cases for dental implant therapy in cases of bisphosphonate intake, further clinical, randomized and multicentric studies are needed, with longer follow-ups, to fully clarify this situation which often negatively affects the quality of life of our patients and places clinicians in the face of doubts.

Nowadays, many people are forced to accelerate their rhythms because of frenetic life and work. Both private and professional lives intertwine, and finding the time for other activities is challenging. Time is one of the goods that has been lost or is difficult to obtain anyway. This experimental and prospective study aims to evaluate the heart rate cycle of medical doctors during their life/work routine. Thanks to technology, it is possible to monitor these parameters constantly. The results of this study are derived from a literature analysis and a trial carried out on three professionals regarding their work-related heart rate (Apple Watch®). The main limitation is represented by the sample; it is certainly small and does not provide significant results. This study represents the first step for a trial that can be carried out on a large scale; this preliminary study provides information about the heart rate cycle.

The calculation of manual tightening torque applied by clinicians plays a critical role in achieving optimal preload for dental implants. However, there is a research gap when it comes to understanding the specific calculus involved in this process. This study aims to address this gap by analyzing the bending and torsional moments during manual tightening torque application by physicians of various specialties and genders. Additionally, the rates of early complications associated with clinician-calculated preload will be evaluated. The findings of this study will contribute to enhancing the understanding of clinician-controlled preload and guide future practices for successful dental implant outcomes.

Socket preservation is a procedure in oral surgery that is vital to maintain the integrity of the alveolar ridge following tooth extraction, providing a favorable environment for subsequent implant placement. The success of post-extractive implantology relies on osseointegration and the establishment of harmonious soft tissue contours. A supporting literature review was conducted to analyze the socket preservation technique and the role of prosthodontics in facilitating optimal soft tissue healing. Relevant studies and clinical trials published between 2000 and 2023 were included. The search was performed using electronic databases, such as PubMed, Embase, and Scopus, using keywords related to socket preservation, post-extractive implantology, prosthodontics, and soft tissue conditioning. Socket preservation techniques, such as guided bone regeneration and biomaterials, have been proven effective in minimizing bone resorption and preserving the alveolar ridge volume. However, with proper consideration of the prosthetic aspects, these techniques may yield optimal aesthetic outcomes. Prosthodontics plays a crucial role in soft tissue conditioning by providing provisional restorations, functional and esthetic support, and contouring the emergence profile. The socket preservation technique in oral surgery is fundamental for successful post-extractive implantology. However, it is equally important to consider the prosthodontic aspects to ensure adequate soft tissue conditioning. Provisional restorations can help shape the surrounding soft tissues, maintaining a proper emergence profile and enhancing the final aesthetic outcome.

This scientific article proposal explores the potential benefits of using artificial intelligence (AI) in prosthodontic restoration to achieve predictable and safer dental outcomes. Prosthodontic restoration involves designing, fabricating, and placing dental prostheses to restore oral function and aesthetics. Although traditional prosthodontic techniques have evolved significantly, incorporating AI into the workflow can revolutionize the field by enhancing accuracy, efficiency, and patient satisfaction. The proposed study aims to investigate the integration of AI algorithms and techniques into various stages of prosthodontic restoration, including treatment planning, digital impression acquisition, prosthesis design, and fabrication. By leveraging machine learning algorithms and image processing, AI can assist in diagnosing dental conditions, predicting treatment outcomes, and optimizing prosthesis design to ensure optimal fit and function. This technology can also aid in identifying potential challenges and risks before proceeding with the restorative procedures, minimizing errors, and improving patient safety. Furthermore, AI-powered systems can facilitate real-time assessment and feedback during fabrication, ensuring precise milling or 3D printing of prosthetic materials. These advancements have the potential to streamline workflows, reduce human error, and shorten treatment times, ultimately leading to enhanced treatment outcomes and increased patient satisfaction. The proposed research methodology includes a comprehensive literature review, an analysis of existing AI applications in prosthodontic restoration, and the development of a prototype AI-assisted system for prosthesis design and fabrication. The evaluation of this prototype will involve quantitative and qualitative assessments, comparing its performance with traditional methods. Overall, this article proposal seeks to highlight the transformative role of AI in prosthodontic restoration, emphasizing its potential to revolutionize traditional approaches and deliver predictable and safer dentistry. The findings from this research can contribute to advancing dental technology, fostering innovation, and improving patient care in prosthodontics.

Background: Adipokine is a huge family of cytokines which are cell-signaling proteins secreted by adipose tissue released by white adipose tissue (WAT), and adipolin (FAM132A/CTRP12 gene) is the newest member added to the adipokine family. This research marks the first attempt to estimate and compare the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and serum levels of adipolin in healthy subjects and periodontitis patients with and without type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods: The study population consisted of 10 patients each with healthy subjects and periodontitis with and without T2DM. GCF and serum samples were collected from each patient before non-surgical periodontal therapy. All the samples underwent an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) test with an antibody specific to adipolin. Results: The mean GCF and serum adipolin levels were high in Groups I and III compared with Groups II and IV. Comparison of adipolin levels between the groups showed no statistically significant difference either in GCF (p = 0.68) or serum (p = 0.85). The comparison between GCF and serum adipolin levels in Group IV showed a statistically significant difference (p < 0.031). The mean values showed a decrease in adipolin values as the disease rate progressed. A negative correlation was seen in serum and GCF adipolin with HbA1C. Conclusion: As the GCF and serum concentration of adipolin show a gradual positive relation with disease severity, within the limitations of the current study, it can be postulated adipolin could be a possible anti-inflammatory biomarker of periodontal disease.

Temporomandibular disorders are a group of conditions affecting the temporomandibular joints, the jaw muscles, and related structures. Patients with temporomandibular signs and/or symptoms frequently present with indications for prosthetic treatment. The management of these patients aims to achieve patient comfort, occlusal stability, and the complex restoration of the teeth. The goal of this review is to provide an overview of the relationship between prosthodontics and temporomandibular disorders and/or bruxism with a focus on the cause-and-effect implications and the strategies for planning prosthetic treatments in patients with temporomandibular disorders and/or bruxism.

This investigation aimed to compare the effectiveness of the OT Equator® (Rhein, Bologna, Italy) and the Locator attachment systems used to retain early loaded implant-retained overdentures. This study was designed as a multicenter randomised controlled trial of parallel groups. After implant placement, the patients were randomised to receive OT Equator® attachments in the test group or Locator attachments in the control group. The outcome measures were implant and prosthetic success and survival rates, any biological and technical complication, marginal bone loss, patients’ satisfaction, and periodontal parameters. Overall, 42 patients were consecutively enrolled and treated. One implant was lost in the control group, while no implants were lost in the test group. No prostheses failed in both groups. Only a few complications were experienced in both groups. The main was represented by loss of retention of the attachments (retentive caps). The OT Equator® attachment showed statistically lower periodontal parameters. In conclusion, both attachment systems were suitable for overdenture implant retention.

Introduction: Mandibular setback surgery (MSS) is one of the treatment options to resolve mandibular prognathism in patients suffering from skeletal class III malocclusion, which cannot be treated with simple orthodontic treatment. The mandibular setback surgical operation can involve changes in the pharyngeal morphology, resulting in a narrowing of the posterior airway space (PAS). This aspect is associated with an increase in airflow resistance, which increases the risk of developing snoring or obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). The aim of this study is to evaluate the medium- and long-term effects of mandibular setback surgery on the upper airways and its possible association with OSAS in patients suffering from class III skeletal malocclusion. Material and methods: A total of 12 patients (5 males and 7 females) were enrolled in this study. The statistical tests highlighted a significant change in the PAS and BMI values in relation to T0, before surgery (PAS: 12.7 SD: 1.2; BMI: 21.7 SD: 1.2), and T1, after surgery (PAS: 10.3 SD: 0.6, p < 0.01; BMI: 23.8 SD: 1.2, p < 0.05). Sample size was calculated to detect an effect size of 0.9, with statistical power set at 0.8 and the significance level set at 0.05. Results: No statistically significant correlation was found between the extent of mandibular setback, PAS and BMI change. Conclusion: This study confirms the effects of mandibular setback surgery on the upper airways, reporting a statistically significant PAS reduction in the medium- and long-term follow-up. Objective: The objective of this study is to investigate whether age is a significant risk factor for spinal nerve injury following selective neck dissection (SND) in patients with head and neck cancer. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on patients who had undergone SND for head and neck cancer at a tertiary hospital between 2020 and 2022. The primary outcome was the incidence of spinal nerve injury after SND. The secondary outcomes included the types and severity of spinal nerve injury and the impact of age on these outcomes. Results: A total of 78 patients were included in the study and subdivided into two groups. Two shoulder-specific questionnaires (the Shoulder Pain and Disability Index (SPADI) and the Shoulder Disability Questionnaire (SDQ)) were administered to assess shoulder morbidity postoperatively. Twelve patients showed shoulder impairment following surgery. We divided the sample into two age-based groups; the older group showed a higher rate of SAN injury and the younger group showed a lower rate of improvement over time. Conclusion: This study suggests that age is a significant risk factor for spinal nerve injury following SND in patients with head and neck cancer. Older patients are more likely to experience spinal nerve injury after SND than younger patients. The findings of this study may help in the development of strategies to prevent spinal nerve injury in older patients undergoing SND for head and neck cancer.

The inflammatory injury of the mucous membranes lining the digestive tract, from the mouth to the anus, is called mucositis. One of the intriguing and compelling new therapeutic modalities that has emerged in recent decades due to advances in our understanding of this condition’s pathophysiology is probiotics. The purpose of this meta-analysis is to evaluate the efficiency of probiotics in the treatment of chemotherapy-induced mucositis for head and neck malignancies; a literature search was performed on PubMed, Lilacs, and Web of Science, and articles published from 2000 to 31 January 2023 were considered, according to the keywords entered. The term “Probiotics” was combined with “oral mucositis” using the Boolean connector AND; at the end of the research, 189 studies were identified from the search on the three engines. Only three were used to draw up the present systematic study and metanalysis; this meta-analysis showed that the treatment of mucositis with probiotics is an effective method, and the analysis of the results of these studies showed that the use of probiotics promoted a decrease in the severity of mucositis symptoms.

Background and Objectives: Gaucher disease (GD) is a lysosomal storage disorder with the genetic autosomal recessive transmission. Bone involvement is a prevalent finding in Gaucher disease. It causes deformity and limits daily activities and the quality of life. In 75% of patients, there is bone involvement. This review aims to evaluate the principal findings in the jaw by a Cone-beam computed tomography (CBTC) and X-ray orthopantomography; Materials and Methods: PubMed, Web of Science, Lilacs and Scopus were systematically searched until 31 December 2022. In addition, a manual search was performed using the bibliography of selected articles and a Google Scholar search. Clinical studies were selected that considered principal radiographic findings in radiography in a group of patients affected by GD. Results: Out of 5079 papers, four studies were included. The main findings are generalized rarefaction and enlarged narrow space, anodontia. Conclusions: The exact mechanism of bone manifestation is probably due to the infiltration of Gaucher cells in the bone marrow and, consequently, the destruction of bone architecture. All long bones are a potential means of skeletal manifestation. The jaw is more affected than the maxilla, and the principal features are cortical thinning, osteosclerosis, pseudocystic lesions, mental demineralization, flattening in the head of the condyle, effacement of anatomical structures, thickening of maxillary sinus mucosa. The dentist plays a crucial role in diagnosing and treating these patients. Sometimes the diagnosis can be made by a simple panoramic radiograph. All long bones are affected, and the mandible is particularly involved.

Objective: The coronavirus belongs to the family of Coronaviridae, which are not branched single-stranded RNA viruses. COVID-19 creates respiratory problems and infections ranging from mild to severe. The virus features mechanisms that serve to delay the cellular immune response. The host’s response is responsible for the pathological process that leads to tissue destruction. Temporomandibular disorders are manifested by painful jaw musculature and jaw joint areas, clicks, or creaks when opening or closing the mouth. All these symptoms can be disabling and occur during chewing and when the patient yawns or even speaks. The pandemic situation has exacerbated anxieties and amplified the vulnerability of individuals. Therefore, from this mechanism, how the COVID-19 pandemic may have increased the incidence of temporomandibular disorders is perceived. The purpose of this review is to evaluate whether COVID-19-related anxiety has caused an increase in temporomandibular dysfunction symptoms in adults to children. Methods: PubMed, Web of Science, Lilacs, and Scopus were systematically searched, until 30 July 2022, to identify studies presenting: the connection between COVID-19 with temporomandibular disorders. Results: From 198 papers, 4 studies were included. Literature studies have shown that the state of uncertainty and anxiety has led to an increase in the incidence of this type of disorder, although not all studies agree. Seventy-three studies were identified after viewing all four search engines; at the end of the screening phase, only four were considered that met the PECO, the planned inclusion, and the exclusion criteria. All studies showed a statistically significant correlation between temporomandibular disorders and COVID-19 with a p < 0.05. Conclusions: All studies agreed that there is an association between COVID-19 and increased incidence of temporomandibular disorders.

The advent of new technologies in the field of medicine and dentistry is creating improvements that lead clinicians to have materials and procedures able to improve patients’ quality of life. The aim of this article is to evaluate occlusion load and its consequences on fixed implant-supported prosthesis. New materials have granted clinicians the possibility achieve great aesthetic results in dental prosthesis, and new procedures allow them to standardize and give precise and repeatable results, especially for the functional and long-term stability aspects of products. Some principles should be carefully evaluated and applied to every dental prosthesis; the evaluation of the forces and fitting of meso-structures to dental implants, an aspect that is often not well considered by clinicians, is the main focus of this article.

Even for products centrally approved, each European country is responsible for national market access after European Medicines Agency (EMA) approval. This step can result in inequalities in terms of access, due to different opinions about the therapeutic value assessed by Health Technology Assessment (HTA) bodies. This study aims to provide a comparative analysis of HTA recommendations issued by EU countries (France, Germany, and Italy) for new neurological drugs following EMA approval. In the reference period, we identified 11 innovative medicines authorized in Europe for five neurological diseases (cerebral adrenoleukodystrophy, spinal muscular atrophy, metachromatic leukodystrophy, migraine, and polyneuropathy in patients with hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis), including eight drugs for genetic rare diseases. We found no agreement on the therapeutic value (in particular the “added value” compared to the standard of care) of the selected drugs. Despite the differences in terms of assessment, the access has been usually guaranteed even if with various types of limitations. The heterogeneity of the HTA assessment of clinical data among countries is probably related to the uncertainties about clinical value at the time of EMA approval and the lack of long-term data and of direct comparison with available alternatives. Given the importance of new medicines especially for rare diseases, it is crucial to understand and act on the causes of inconsistency among the HTA assessments, in order to ensure rapid and uniform access to innovation for patients who can benefit.

The molecular and physical mechanisms underlying chromatin folding at the single DNA molecule level remain poorly understood. Here, the authors use polymer modeling to investigate the conformations of two 2Mb-wide DNA loci in normal and cohesin depleted cells, and provide evidence that the architecture of the studied loci is controlled by a thermodynamics mechanism of polymer phase separation whereby chromatin self-assembles in segregated globules.

The Panoramic radiography is the result of a radiological technique that allows the reproduction of the dental arches and the support structures of a unique image. The clinical utility of panoramic radiography allows the overall assessment as well as the detection of structural abnormalities and/or possibly relates to pathological lesions. The disadvantage of this technique is related to the lower quality of the images compared to endoral radiographs and TC scans but especially to the attempt to represent a three-dimensional, curved anatomic region on a two-dimensional plane. This inevitably leads to geometric distortions of shape, enlargements and overlaps that adversely affect the detection of any pathological entities. However, the most important advantage is the possibility of reducing patient exposure to ionizing rays. The aim of digital radiology is to improve the characteristics of radiological machinery (through increasingly innovative and sophisticated data processing software and hardware) in order to obtain high-quality images while reducing dosimetry and to reduce “disturbing elements” in radiological images. To overcome the limitations of the panoramic technique and to improve the quality of radiological images, and thus the effectiveness of diagnosis, image optimization software can be used. In this regard, a tool called Pipeline for Advanced Contrast Enhancement (PACE) is being developed: This is an algorithm that allows image quality to be improved by optimizing contrast and reducing brightness inhomogeneity, resulting in increased definition, making details more evident. The purpose of the proposed investigation is to evaluate if the application of the PACE algorithm in dental radiology could be an advantage because of the possibility of enhancing the quality of radiological images to make details of anatomical structures and related pathological lesions more obvious.

With the recent increased prevalence of human outbreaks, monkeypox has been recognized for decades as an infectious disease with substantial pandemic potential. The majority of cases of this virus have been observed in the European region (11,865), with few cases in the Western Pacific (54). Various governing health agencies are striving to restrain the fatal monkeypox virus (MPXV). Health practitioners around the world are learning about the many clinical manifestations of this infection, and its potential therapies. Despite the plethora of new evidence and rising cases, the essential questions remain unsolved. Thus, in this review, we have modernized the outlook for monkeypox, which will be helpful for various medical practitioners. In the light of continuing outbreaks around the world, we have also presented our assessment of the readiness of India against this outbreak, with a special focus on its effects on oral health.

In recent years, implantology has made significant progress, as it has now become a safe and predictable practice. The development of new geometries, primary and secondary, of new surfaces and alloys, has made this possible. The purpose of this review is to analyze the different alloys present on the market, such as that in zirconia, and evaluate their clinical differences with those most commonly used, such as those in grade IV titanium. The review, conducted on major scientific databases such as Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science and MDPI yielded a startling number of 305 results. After the application of the filters and the evaluation of the results in the review, only 10 Randomized Clinical Trials (RCTs) were included. Multiple outcomes were considered, such as Marginal Bone Level (MBL), Bleeding on Probing (BoP), Survival Rate, Success Rate and parameters related to aesthetic and prosthetic factors. There are currently no statistically significant differences between the use of zirconia implants and titanium implants, neither for fixed prosthetic restorations nor for overdenture restorations. Only the cases reported complain about the rigidity and, therefore, the possibility of fracture of the zirconium. Certainly the continuous improvement in these materials will ensure that they could be used safely while maintaining their high aesthetic performance.

Hyperesthesia is related to increased sensitivity of dental tissues to mechanical, chemical and thermal stimuli. The aim of this prospective clinical trial was to compare the effectiveness of a calcium-fluoride-forming agent (Tiefenfluorid®, Humanchemie GmbH, Alfeld, Germany) with that of a fluoride varnish (EnamelastTM, Ultradent Inc., Cologne, Germany) in the treatment of dental hyperesthesia in adult patients. In total, 176 individuals (106 females and 70 males, aged 18–59 years old) diagnosed with dental hyperesthesia (DH) were enrolled. The main clinical symptoms were hyperesthesia from coldness and sweetness during chewing; the types of clinical lesions were also determined and recorded. The patients were selected randomly and divided into two groups: (i) the first group of 96 patients was treated with Tiefenfluorid® applied in three appointments at 7-day intervals; (ii) the second group of 80 patients was treated with EnamelastTM, applied seven times at 7-day intervals. All the patients were recalled 7 days, 14 days, 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months from the last application. At the baseline and during every follow-up visit, the DH was measured with a pulp tester. A random intercept/random slope model was used to evaluate the effect of the treatment, at various times with respect to the initial diagnosis. Within the limits of the present study, Tiefenfluorid® was more effective than EnamelastTM against DH in that it provided long-lasting results, with a significant improvement still detected at the latest 6-month follow-up.

White spots (WS) are one of the most undesirable side effects in patients undergoing orthodontic therapy and are usually located around bracket bases and even detected under the molar bands. The aim of the present cross-sectional study was to evaluate the WS lesion during orthodontic therapy and the correlation between WS and oral hygiene habits. Patients requiring orthodontic treatment with a fixed appliance were screened for the inclusion/exclusion criteria, and 74 subjects were finally enrolled. Each patient received three examinations: at T0, the day of the application of the fixed appliance; at T1, three months later; and at T2, six months after treatment start. After calculating descriptive statistics, differences between groups were evaluated with an independent sample t-test. The first type error was set as p ≤ 0.01. The observed prevalence of WS lesions was 59.5% on T1 and 60.8% on T2. The most affected teeth result to be upper molars, lower left first molar, upper right central incisor and upper left lateral incisor, upper right canine, upper left first premolar, and lower right first molar. A higher frequency of daily tooth brushing was accompanied by a lower prevalence of WS. No significant effect of sex was observed.

Summary: Enhancer RNAs (eRNAs) are a subset of long noncoding RNA generated from genomic enhancers: they are thought to act as potent promoters of the expression of nearby genes through interaction with the transcriptional and epigenomic machineries. In the present work, we describe two eRNAs transcribed from the enhancer of Nkx2-5—a gene specifying a master cardiomyogenic lineage transcription factor (TF)—which we call Intergenic Regulatory Element Nkx2-5 Enhancers (IRENEs). The IRENEs are encoded, respectively, on the same strand (SS) and in the divergent direction (div) respect to the nearby gene. Of note, these two eRNAs have opposing roles in the regulation of Nkx2-5: IRENE-SS acts as a canonical promoter of transcription, whereas IRENE-div represses the activity of the enhancer through recruitment of the histone deacetylase sirtuin 1. Thus, we have identified an autoregulatory loop controlling expression of the master cardiac TF NKX2-5, in which one eRNA represses transcription.

Summary: We investigate the three-dimensional (3D) conformations of the α-globin locus at the single-allele level in murine embryonic stem cells (ESCs) and erythroid cells, combining polymer physics models and high-resolution Capture-C data. Model predictions are validated against independent fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) data measuring pairwise distances, and Tri-C data identifying three-way contacts. The architecture is rearranged during the transition from ESCs to erythroid cells, associated with the activation of the globin genes. We find that in ESCs, the spatial organization conforms to a highly intermingled 3D structure involving non-specific contacts, whereas in erythroid cells the α-globin genes and their enhancers form a self-contained domain, arranged in a folded hairpin conformation, separated from intermingling flanking regions by a thermodynamic mechanism of micro-phase separation. The flanking regions are rich in convergent CTCF sites, which only marginally participate in the erythroid-specific gene-enhancer contacts, suggesting that beyond the interaction of CTCF sites, multiple molecular mechanisms cooperate to form an interacting domain. : Chiariello et al. use polymer physics models to infer the 3D conformations of the murine α-globin locus. In the transition from ESCs to erythroid cells, the locus rearranges from an inactive highly intermingled conformation to an active, hairpin-shaped structure, marked by cell-specific three-way contacts accurately predicted by the models. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the histological and histomorphometric characteristics of post-extraction sites grafted with decellularized bovine compact bone from bovine femur, mixed and unmixed with leukocyte- and platelet-rich fibrin after four months of healing. This study was designed as a randomized controlled trial of parallel groups. Patients in need of a single, implant-supported restoration to replace a hopeless tooth were recruited for tooth extraction and implant placement four months after socket preservation procedure. After tooth extraction, patients were randomly allocated to receive decellularized bovine compact bone from bovine femur, mixed and unmixed with leukocyte- and platelet-rich fibrin. After four months of healing, tapered implants were inserted with an insertion torque between 35 and 45 Ncm. Two months later, implants were loaded with screw-retained definitive crowns. Outcome measures were implant (ISR) and prosthesis (PSR) survival rates, complications, histological and histomorphometric analyses, radiographic marginal bone-level changes, and patients’ satisfaction. Clinical data were collected up to one year after tooth extraction and socket preservation procedures. Thirty patients were consecutively enrolled in the trial (15 in each group). Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, bone samples were collected only in 19 patients. Two implants failed before definitive prosthesis delivery (ISR 93.3%). No prosthesis failed (PSR 100%). Three complications were experienced in the control group. The mean bone percentage was 40.64 ± 18.76 in the test group and 33.40 ± 22.38 in the control group. The difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.4846). The mean soft tissue percentage was 32.55 ± 19.45 in the test group and 55.23 ± 17.64 in the control group. The difference was statistically significant (p = 0.0235). The mean residual graft was 24.59 ± 18.39 in the test group and 11.37 ± 12.12 in the control group. The difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.0992). Mean marginal bone loss, as well as patient satisfaction, showed no differences between groups. With the limitations of the present study, socket preservation with L-PRF mixed with decellularized bovine compact bone demonstrated favorable results, comparing with decellularized bovine compact bone from bovine femur alone. Further studies with larger sample size and longer follow-up are needed to confirm these preliminary results.

(1) Background: An accurate prediction of cancer survival is very important for counseling, treatment planning, follow-up, and postoperative risk assessment in patients with Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC). There has been an increased interest in the development of clinical prognostic models and nomograms which are their graphic representation. The study aimed to revise the prognostic performance of clinical-pathological prognostic models with internal validation for OSCC. (2) Methods: This systematic review was performed according to the Cochrane Handbook for Diagnostic Test Accuracy Reviews chapter on searching, the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis) guidelines, and the Critical Appraisal and Data Extraction for Systematic Reviews of Prediction Modelling Studies (CHARMS). (3) Results: Six studies evaluating overall survival in patients with OSCC were identified. All studies performed internal validation, while only four models were externally validated. (4) Conclusions: Based on the results of this systematic review, it is possible to state that it is necessary to carry out internal validation and shrinkage to correct overfitting and provide an adequate performance for optimism. Moreover, calibration, discrimination and nonlinearity of continuous predictors should always be examined. To reduce the risk of bias the study design used should be prospective and imputation techniques should always be applied to handle missing data. In addition, the complete equation of the prognostic model must be reported to allow updating, external validation in a new context and the subsequent evaluation of the impact on health outcomes and on the cost-effectiveness of care.

The objective of this study was to examine the effect of different conditions of simulated hydrostatic pulpal pressure on the μTBS of HEMA-based and HEMA-free dentin bonding agents (DBAs). The influence of dentin location (deep and superficial) on μTBS was also evaluated. Flat coronal dentin surfaces of extracted human molars were prepared. Three groups of resin-bonded specimens were exposed to different pulpal pressures. Pulpal pressure was maintained for 20 min for each group. A flowable resin composite was used for coronal build-up. The bonded teeth were sectioned and, after 24 h of water storage, stressed to failure using the microtensile tester (μTBS). Failed samples were analyzed by SEM inspection. HEMA-based DBAs were much more sensitive to pulpal pressure conditions than non-HEMA-containing DBAs. Pulpal pressure had a greater influence in deep dentin. The HEMA-free DBA was insensitive to the presence or absence of pulpal pressure condition. SEM inspection confirmed a relationship between the presence of voids inside the HEMA-based DBAs layer and the lower μTBS results. HEMA-based DBAs are more sensitive to pulpal pressure conditions than HEMA-free DBAs. Interestingly, HEMA-free DBA showed a greater number of water droplets at resin–dentin interface in all tested conditions.

The aim of this study is to demonstrate the use and the effectiveness of cephalometry and golden proportions analysis of the face in planning prosthetic treatments in totally edentulous patients. In order to apply this method, latero-lateral and posterior-anterior X-rays must be performed in addition to the common procedure. Two main concerns for totally edentulous patients are the establishment of the vertical dimension and the new position of the occlusal plane. The divine proportion analysis was carried out by the use of a golden divider. The prosthetic protocol was divided into three steps and a case was selected for better understanding. Referring to the golden relations, if the distance from the chin to the wing of the nose is 1.0, the distance from the nose to eye is 0.618. This proportion is useful and effective in determining the correct prosthetic vertical dimension. The incisal margin of the lower incisor must be positioned between Point A (A) and protuberance menti (Pm) according to the gold ratio 0.618 of the total height A-Pm. Posteriorly the occlusal plane must be placed 2 mm below the divine occlusal plane (traced from the incisal margin of lower incisors to Xi point). A prosthesis made in accordance with cephalometric parameters and divine proportions of the face helps to improve the patient’s aesthetics, function and social personality.

The management of critical-size bone defects is still demanding. Recently, autologous platelet concentrates in combination with bone substitute have been applied and reported in a few studies. Our aim is to report the healing of a critical-size alveolar bone defect treated with a new bone regeneration technique by means of L-PRF and L-PRF blocks. A 45-year-old woman presented a large cystic lesion; the extraction of three teeth, a cyst removal procedure, and bone regeneration procedures with L-PRF and L-PRF blocks were planned. The L-PRF block was prepared by mixing a bone substitute with a piece of L-PRF membrane and liquid fibrinogen. Additionally, after bone healing an implant-based rehabilitation was optimally performed. On the basis of the positive results, in terms of bone healing and tissue regeneration in a large bone defect, the application of L-PRF and L-PRF blocks, in agreement with the scarce literature, is suggested as a feasible procedure in selected cases.

Endodontic failure has been and continues to be a problem for endodontics-specialists. Complicated anatomy, numerous foramens, and accessory canals are an environment for microorganisms to infect the teeth. The purpose of the present work was to evaluate the regeneration of copper–calcium hydroxide (Cupral)-endodontically treated teeth diagnosed with apical periodontitis using an electrophoresis technique. In total, 132 patients, aging from 19 to 65 years old, underwent endodontic treatment mono- and multi-radicular teeth, with complicated canals from January 2019 to June 2020. The patients were divided into two groups: (i) the control group—which included 54 patients (n = 62 teeth) receiving endodontic paste (Calcipast + 1) and, as final filling, the AH-PlusTM cement—and (ii) the Cupral group, which included 78 patients (n = 80 teeth) receiving Cupral paste plus the electrophoretic current and, as final filling, the Atacamit-alkaline cement. The clinical cases were periodically observed along an 18-month follow-up period via radiography. Data were expressed as focal size of the lesions (mean ± standard error (SEM) of all the radiographic outcomes) observed in each group at each interval point. Statistical analysis was performed using the Student’s t-test that allowed us to compare the control and Cupral groups; the statistical significance was set at p < 0.05 and p < 0.01, where the latter was highly significant. Before treatments, the focal sizes were 4.8 mm and 4.95 mm for control and Cupral-treated groups, respectively. After 6 months, the mean focal sizes were 3.9 mm and 2.14 mm for the control and Cupral groups, respectively. After 12 months, in the control group, the mean focal size was measured at 2.8 mm, while, in Cupral group, the lesion size decreased down to 0.31 mm and a highly dynamic regeneration of the destructive focal-bone occurred. After 18 months, the lesions were further significantly reduced in the control group (mean values of 2.62 mm), while they were barely detectable in the Cupral group (0.2 mm). In conclusion, we provide initial evidence that the Cupral-electrophoresis methodology is effective in treating destructive periodontitis of teeth with problematic canals up to 18 months, thus allowing teeth preservation.

The persistence of Coronavirus, responsible for coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) has been evaluated by different articles, but it is still not well-defined, and the method of diffusion is unclear. The aim of this manuscript is to underline new Coronavirus persistence features on different environments and surfaces. The scientific literature is still poor on this topic and research is mainly focused on therapy and diagnosis, rather than the characteristics of the virus. These data could be an aid to summarize virus features and formulate new guidelines and anti-spread strategies.

In recent years there has been a lot of talk about toothpastes with a particular chemical compound: stannous fluoride (SnF2). Its presence is currently still highly controversial, as the latter could have negative health effects. The different companies that produce toothpastes express its dosage in ppm. The purpose of this systematic literature review is to analyze all randomized clinical trials in the literature over the last 10 years and to draw clear results on the function of stannous fluoride, for this purpose the authors performed a Mann–Whitney U Test. Materials: The first analysis of the literature produced a number greater than 800 results, subsequently applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, and following a manual analysis of the results, 26 manuscripts have been obtained. Results: From the results analyzed in this review, it could be shown that stannous fluoride does not present important contraindications, if not those commonly reported for fluorine. A meta-analysis on enamel loss has been conducted, it shows that SnF2 products provide better results with a p < 0.05 value. Conclusion: This compound could have significant effects in favor of erosion and recalcification of the enamel, on the biofilm formation, gingival inflammation, and in addition, it could be an important aid in the removal of tooth stains and halitosis.

In the dental field, the study of materials has always been the basis of the clinical practice. Over the years, with the evolution of materials, it has been possible to produce safe and predictable prosthetic devices, with ever better aesthetic features, biocompatibility and patient satisfaction. This review briefly analyzes the features of dental resin materials to underline the biological, microbiological and chemo-physical characteristics. The main aim of prosthodontics is to rehabilitate patients and therefore improve their quality of life. Dental resins are the main materials used for the production of dentures. Once solidified, these polymers have different mechanical or surface characteristics. The results of the literature on these characteristics were analyzed and some new brand dental resins, known as modern resin, were subsequently evaluated. The new materials are undoubtedly a step forward in the creation of dental prostheses, and also in all subsequent maintenance phases. This review shows how changing the chemical structure of the resins could have microbiological influences on the growth and management of the biofilm, and also physical influences in terms of its mechanical characteristics. The development of new materials is a constant goal in dentistry in order to obtain increasingly predictable rehabilitations.

The advent of new technologies in the field of medicine and dentistry is giving improvements that lead the clinicians to have materials and procedures able to improve patients’ quality of life. In dentistry, the last digital techniques offer a fully digital computerized workflow that does not include the standard multiple traditional phases. The purpose of this study is to evaluate all clinical trials and clinical randomized trials related to the digital or dental impression technique in prosthetic dentistry trying to give the readers global information about advantages and disadvantages of each procedure. Data collection was conducted in the main scientific search engines, including articles from the last 10 years, in order to obtain results that do not concern obsolete impression techniques. Elsevier, Pubmed and Embase have been screened as sources for performing the research. The results data demonstrated how the working time appears to be improved with digital workflow, but without a significant result (P = 0.72596). The papers have been selected following the Population Intervention Comparison Outcome (PICO) question, which is related to the progress on dental impression materials and technique. The comparison between dentists or practitioners with respect to classic impression procedures, and students open to new device and digital techniques seem to be the key factor on the final impression technique choice. Surely, digital techniques will end up supplanting the analogical ones altogether, improving the quality of oral rehabilitations, the economics of dental practice and also the perception by our patients.

The relationship between posture, spine, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is still a hotly debated topic in medicine. TMJ takes part in different physiological functions of the organism, starting from its embryological development, it is possible that it influences different vital functions. There is a strong connection between the respiratory tract and dental/maxillary occlusion or anatomy. The altered physiology of this district leads to pathologies that could affect the whole organism. On the contrary, it is also possible to highlight some symptoms of distant organism districts. Knowing well the pathophysiology of this district and semiotics, it is also possible to diagnose pathologies affecting other organs.
