Abstract

Controlling feeding practices, such as pressure to eat, are associated with a child's disinhibited eating and extremes in bodyweight. We aimed to explore which factors are associated with parent dyads' pressuring feeding practices, including how mothers and fathers perceive the sharing of household tasks such as mealtime and child feeding responsibilities. In this cross-sectional study, parent dyads (mother and father) of healthy preschool-aged children completed an identical questionnaire consisting of measures of picky eating (food fussiness subscale of Child Eating Behavior Questionnaire), parental concern for undereating, and pressure to eat (Child Feeding Questionnaire). We used separate multivariable linear regression models for mothers and fathers to assess correlates associated with pressure to eat subscale score, including slowness of eating and enjoyment of food, child BMI z-score and race/ethnicity, and household income. Separate unadjusted linear regression models for mothers and fathers were used to report the association of pressure to eat with household responsibilities. Parents (N = 88) had similar mean picky eating, concern for undereating, and pressure to eat scores; more fathers had high pressure to eat scores (36% vs 27%). Higher pressure to eat was significantly associated with lower income, non-Hispanic Black or Black race/ethnicity, slow eating, and lower enjoyment of food. Pressure was not associated with household responsibilities. While there were similar maternal and paternal perceptions of child eating behaviors, more fathers reported pressuring their child to eat. Identifying differences in parental feeding practices may assist in intervention development to improve feeding practices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The nation, as a symbolic and bounded entity is maintained and reproduced as an expression of power. Music, as a medium of cultural power, is productive of sociality; the organisation (or disorganisation) of the sonic capable of producing (or resisting) the intangible bonds of collectivity. This study seeks to explore the power of music to symbolise, perform and potently communicate the imagined communion attributed to the experience of nation-ness. It asks specific questions about the practice of composition and its role in the construction and negotiation of national identity, furthermore, examining music's potential as a means of resistance. The nation, as a hegemonic construct, produces a system of organisation which reproduces the dominant frameworks of power and marks the symbolic boundaries of belonging. To critically examine the processes of meaning-making found in the cultural construction of the nation in music, composition is positioned as both the subject and principal methodology of the work. A symbiotic approach to practice and theory was taken in an attempt to develop an interrelated and intertextual study, constructing a multimodal practice of research which has wider implications in the production of knowledge and the mapping of meaning, providing a practical explication of these processes in action. The study considers the ways in which the individual is produced in creative imaginings of community, examining the practices involved in negotiating the multidimensional hierarchies of gendered, racialised, geographical framings of collectivity.

Abstract

Although three porcine aromatase isoforms have been identified, their gene expression profiles in reproduction are still poorly understood. Here, we identified by Sanger sequencing unique nucleotide signatures for the three paralogous copies of Cyp19 and analyzed by RT-PCR the occurrence of the Cyp19 and Cyp17a1 transcripts at different tissues and stages of conceptus and fetal-placental development. Cyp19a1 and Cyp19a3 expressions were detected in conceptuses and gonads, respectively. Cyp19a2 transcripts were identified on both the conceptuses and the placenta samples. Transcripts for Cyp17a1 were detected predominantly in conceptus and gonads. In the endometrium of day 21 pregnant females, as well as days 12 and 17 pseudopregnant females, we did not detect the expression of Cyp19a1, Cyp19a2, or Cyp19a3. In our study, we have demonstrated distinct transcriptional regulation for the three functional Cyp19 paralogs and a potential role for Cyp17a1 in controlling the secretion of estrogen from the conceptus and the placenta. 43. Different habits : representations of Anglican sisterhoods in mid-nineteenth century literature

Abstract

This thesis deals with the different ways in which Anglican Sisterhoods were portrayed in fiction and journalism, both religious and secular, in the mid-nineteenth century. It examines the influence of anti-Roman Catholic and anti-convent literature on these portrayals and considers whether there was any significant interchange between Sisterhoods and the feminist movement of the mid-nineteenth century. The first two chapters deal with the founding of the first Sisterhoods by the Oxford Movement as active, charitable communities in the 1840s, and the type of women - predominately upper- and upper-middle class - attracted by the life and work they offered. The histories of one Sisterhood, and of two Sisters, one typical, the other not, are examined. Periodical articles of the time, while approving of the work undertaken by Sisterhoods - nursing and teaching, for example - with the poorest classes of society, tended to express doubts about Roman Catholic influences, and the suitability of the work for ladies. Chapter three deals with a court case of 1869 in which a Roman Catholic Sister of Mercy accused her convent of ill-treatment. The case attracted enormous publicity and was expected to confirm prurient speculation about convents put forward in anti-Roman Catholic propaganda and fiction, but instead raised issues about the fitness of women for communal living, celibacy and leadership. The case was used by some writers as a plea for more secular work opportunities for women. Chapter four examines works of fiction which feature Sisterhoods, or issues connected with them, by writers of different denominations. Chapters five and six deal with the works of Charlotte Yonge and Henry Kingsley respectively. Yonge was a promoter of High Church values and supporter of Sisterhoods, while Kingsley was an ecumenicist who approved of Anglican and Roman Catholic orders equally.
