Data analytics is a rapidly growing field that plays a crucial role in extracting valuable insights from large volumes of data. A data analytics practicum course provides students with hands-on experience in applying data analytics techniques and tools to real-world scenarios. This practicum is intended to serve as a bridge between the student's academic environment and the professional application of their skills in an employment and internship setting. This study examined the design of a data analytics practicum course. The main objectives included (1) the identification of topics and skills employers look for in new hires in data analytics-related internships and entry-level positions, (2) the development and implementation of a Data Analytics practicum course and (3) reflection on the first-time offering of the course and suggested improvements for the next iteration. As part of this study, industry and organization survey responses drove the design of the course and development of key student learning gains for five learning modules throughout the semester. Faculty within the departments of information technology (IT), mathematics, and statistics collaborated in the construction, development, and implementation of team-teaching instructional practices of the Data Analytics Practicum in Spring 2023. This study applies an interdisciplinary approach to data analytics practicum development and instruction.

Abstract Background Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive subtype with poor prognosis. We aimed to determine whether circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) and circulating tumor cell (CTC) could predict response and long-term outcomes to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC). Methods Patients with TNBC were enrolled between 2017–2021 at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (Houston, TX). Serial plasma samples were collected at four timepoints: pre-NAC (baseline), 12-weeks after NAC (mid-NAC), after NAC/prior to surgery (post-NAC), and one-year after surgery. ctDNA was quantified using a tumor-informed ctDNA assay (SignateraTM, Natera, Inc.) and CTC enumeration using CellSearch. Wilcoxon and Fisher’s exact tests were used for comparisons between groups and Kaplan–Meier analysis used for survival outcomes. Results In total, 37 patients were enrolled. The mean age was 50 and majority of patients had invasive ductal carcinoma (34, 91.9%) with clinical T2, (25, 67.6%) node-negative disease (21, 56.8%). Baseline ctDNA was detected in 90% (27/30) of patients, of whom 70.4% (19/27) achieved ctDNA clearance by mid-NAC. ctDNA clearance at mid-NAC was significantly associated with pathologic complete response (p = 0.02), whereas CTC clearance was not (p = 0.52). There were no differences in overall survival (OS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS) with positive baseline ctDNA and CTC. However, positive ctDNA at mid-NAC was significantly associated with worse OS and RFS (p = 0.0002 and p = 0.0034, respectively). Conclusions Early clearance of ctDNA served as a predictive and prognostic marker in TNBC. Personalized ctDNA monitoring during NAC may help predict response and guide treatment.

Abstract Intergroup aggression often results in the production of public goods, such as a safe and stable social environment and a home range containing the resources required to survive and reproduce. We investigate temporal variation in intergroup aggression in a growing population of colobus monkeys (Colobus vellerosus) to ask a novel question: “Who stepped-up to produce these public goods when doing so became more difficult?”. Both whole-group encounters and male incursions occurred more frequently as the population grew. Males and females were both more likely to participate in whole-group encounters when monopolizable food resources were available, indicating both sexes engaged in food defence. However, only females increasingly did so as the population grew, suggesting that it was females who increasingly produced the public good of home range defence as intergroup competition intensified. Females were also more active in male incursions at high population densities, suggesting they increasingly produced the public good of a safe and stable social environment. This is not to say that males were chronic free-riders when it came to maintaining public goods. Males consistently participated in the majority of intergroup interactions throughout the study period, indicating they may have lacked the capacity to invest more time and effort.

Background: Prolonged exposure to stress is a risk factor for the onset of several disorders. Modern life is burdened by a pervasive prevalence of stress, which represents a major societal challenge requiring new therapeutic strategies. In this context, botanical drug-based therapies can have a paramount importance.Methods: Here we studied the preventive effects of a repeated treatment (p.o. daily, 3 weeks) with a combination of Centella asiatica (200 mg/kg), Echinacea purpurea (20 mg/kg) and Zingiber officinale (150 mg/kg) standardized extracts, on the chronic social defeat stress (CSDS) deleterious outcomes. After 10 days of CSDS exposure, male mice’ performances were evaluated in paradigms relevant for social (social interaction test), emotional (tail suspension test), cognitive (novel object recognition) domains as well as for pain perception (cold plate and von Frey tests) and motor skills (rotarod). Mice were then sacrificed, the spinal cords, hippocampi and frontal cortices dissected and processed for RT-PCR analysis.Results: Extracts mix treatment prevented stress-induced social aversion, memory impairment, mechanical and thermal allodynia and reduced behavioural despair independently of stress exposure. The treatment stimulated hippocampal and cortical BDNF and TrkB mRNA levels and counteracted stress-induced alterations in pro- (TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6) and anti-inflammatory (IL4, IL10) cytokines expression in the same areas. It also modulated expression of pain related genes (GFAP and Slc1a3) in the spinal cord.Conclusion: The treatment with the extracts mix obtained from C. asiatica, E. purpurea and Z. officinale may represent a promising strategy to promote resilience and prevent the deleterious effects induced by extended exposure to psychosocial stress.

Abstract The mountains in the Atlantic Forest domain are environments that harbor a high biodiversity, including species adapted to colder climates that were probably influenced by the climatic variations of the Pleistocene. To understand the phylogeographic pattern and assess the taxonomic boundaries between two sister montane species, a genomic study of the butterflies Actinote mantiqueira and A. alalia (Nymphalidae: Acraeini) was conducted. Analyses based on partial sequences of the mitochondrial gene COI (barcode region) failed to recover any phylogenetic or genetic structure discriminating the two species or sampling localities. However, single nucleotide polymorphisms gathered using Genotyping‐by‐Sequencing provided a strong isolation pattern in all analyses (genetic distance, phylogenetic hypothesis, clustering analyses, and FST statistics) which is consistent with morphology, separating all individuals of A. alalia from all populations of A. mantiqueira. The three sampled mountain ranges where A. mantiqueira populations occur—Serra do Mar, Serra da Mantiqueira, and Poços de Caldas Plateau—were identified as three isolated clusters. Paleoclimate simulations indicate that both species' distributions changed according to climatic oscillations in the Pleistocene period, with the two species potentially occurring in areas of lower altitude during glacial periods when compared to the interglacial periods (as the present). Besides, a potential path between their distribution through the Serra do Mar Mountain range was inferred. Therefore, the Pleistocene climatic fluctuation had a significant impact on the speciation process between A. alalia and A. mantiqueira, which was brought on by isolation at different mountain summits during interglacial periods, as shown by the modeled historical distribution and the observed genetic structure.

Background Nursing is pivotal to healthcare delivery but is often associated with high levels of organizational stress. In this cross-sectional study, we aimed to investigate the associations between exposure to organizational stressors, measured using the Health and Safety Executive Management Standards Indicator Tool, and psychosomatic complaints among nurses in a medium-sized city hospital in northeastern Italy. Methods A total of 215 nurses participated in the study, completing self-report questionnaires assessing organizational stressors and the prevalence of psychosomatic complaints experienced over the preceding six months. Results Significant associations were observed between various organizational stressors and psychosomatic complaints among nurses. Specifically, the Relationships factor emerged as a significant predictor of palpitations, irritability, anxiety, physical and mental tiredness, and headache. Additionally, Demands and Managers' support were identified as significant predictors of specific psychosomatic complaints. Conclusion This study highlights the critical role of addressing organizational stressors, particularly those related to interpersonal relationships, in promoting nurse well-being and optimizing patient care delivery. Despite its strengths, including the use of a well-established measurement tool and a comprehensive assessment of psychosomatic complaints, limitations such as the cross-sectional design and self-report measures warrant consideration. By prioritizing supportive work environments and implementing targeted interventions, healthcare organizations can cultivate a culture of well-being among nurses, ultimately enhancing the quality and safety of healthcare delivery.

Background: Guillain–Barré syndrome (GBS) is an acute inflammatory polyneuropathy that can lead to respiratory failure. In this study, we evaluate early clinical risk factors for respiratory failure at the time of hospital admission. Methods: We studied a retrospective cohort of patients with GBS admitted to a tertiary care center. The potential risk factors studied were sociodemographic characteristics, GBS symptoms, overall and cervical muscle weakness (Medical Research Council [MRC] scores), electromyography findings, and cerebrospinal fluid analysis findings. Unadjusted odds ratios (OR) were calculated and exact logistic regression analysis (adjusted OR) performed to assess the association between baseline risk factors and respiratory failure. Results: Overall, 13 of 113 (12%) patients included in the study developed respiratory failure. Unadjusted analyses showed that involvement of any cranial nerve (OR: 14.7; 95% CI, 1.8–117.1), facial palsy (OR: 17.3; 95% CI, 2.2–138.0), and bulbar weakness (OR: 10.7; 95% CI, 2.3–50.0) were associated with increased risk of respiratory failure. Lower MRC sum scores (for scores 3) were independently associated with respiratory failure. Conclusions: Bulbar and neck muscle weakness at admission are clinical predictors of increased risk of respiratory failure in patients with GBS. These findings could guide the adequate management of high-risk patients. Resumen: Introducción: El síndrome de Guillain-Barré es una polineuropatía inflamatoria aguda que puede causar insuficiencia respiratoria. Evaluamos los factores de riesgo clínicos en el momento de la hospitalización. Métodos: Realizamos un estudio de una cohorte retrospectiva de pacientes con síndrome de Guillain-Barré hospitalizados en un centro de tercer nivel. Analizamos las características sociodemográficas, síntomas de la enfermedad, fuerza muscular general y cervical (escala del Medical Research Council [MRC]), hallazgos electromiográficos, y resultados del análisis del líquido cefalorraquídeo. Calculamos el odds ratio (OR) sin ajustar y realizamos una regresión logística exacta (OR ajustada) para evaluar la asociación entre los factores de riesgo y la insuficiencia respiratoria. Resultados: Trece de los 113 pacientes incluidos (12%) presentó insuficiencia respiratoria. Los análisis no ajustados mostraron una asociación entre mayor riesgo de insuficiencia respiratoria y la afectación de cualquier par craneal (OR: 14,7; IC 95%, 1,8-117,1), parálisis facial (OR: 17,3; IC 95%, 2,2-138,0) y debilidad bulbar (OR: 10,7; IC 95%, 2,3-50,0). Unas puntuaciones más bajas en la MRC-total (puntuaciones 3) se asociaron de forma independiente con la insuficiencia respiratoria. Conclusiones: La presencia de debilidad bulbar y cervical en el momento de la hospitalización es un factor de riesgo de insuficiencia respiratoria en pacientes con síndrome de Guillain-Barré. Estos hallazgos pueden servir de guía para el manejo de los pacientes con mayor riesgo de presentar dicha complicación.

Food analysis plays an important role in preserving the integrity and quality of food. Despite these noble goals, most official methods for the analysis of nutrients (vitamins, carotenoids, etc.) antioxidants (polyphenols, etc.), and contaminants (pesticides, veterinary drugs, mycotoxins etc.) still rely on time-consuming, complex, and polluting procedures of sample preparation. To solve this discrepancy, the scientific community has frantically been working to make extraction procedures faster and safer, resorting to miniaturization, automation, low-energy consumption, and solvents/sorbents from renewable resources. This review provides an overview of the most sustainable extraction methods in food analysis, developed over the last ten years (2014–2024), including relevant examples of both liquid phase and sorbent-based techniques. Particular emphasis is placed on solutions aimed at improving the method sustainability such as smart devices, neoteric solvents, and composite sorbents, discussing the latest advancements and future trends in this sector.

Objective: Li-Fraumeni Syndrome (LFS) is a rare autosomal-dominant syndrome caused by a heterozygous germline mutation of the TP53 gene. It is characterized by early-onset malignancies and high penetrance. Non-bacterial thrombotic endocarditis (NBTE) is an uncommon condition for which cancer is a significant risk factor. Here we present a complex case of LFS unveiled by a NBTE-related ischemic stroke. Case presentation: A 41-year-old woman was admitted following a syncopal episode, preceded by a history of ischemic stroke. She had a notable family history of cancers. Imaging studies revealed ischemic damage and hemorrhagic infarcts, indicating a possible embolic origin or neoplastic involvement. Subsequent examinations revealed a NBTE on the aortic valve as well as multiple primary malignancies including high-grade invasive ductal carcinoma in the breast and primary lung adenocarcinoma. Genetic testing confirmed the presence of a pathogenic variant in TP53. Conclusion: This case underscores the intricate interplay between LFS, oncological manifestations, and thrombotic complications leading to ischemic stroke through NBTE embolization.

Benign endobronchial tumors are rare clinical entities characterized by considerable variability in etiology and clinical presentation. The authors report four cases of endobronchial hamartomas treated and followed up from 2018 to 2023. Three of these cases, with identical endobronchial localization in the right lower lobe, were radically treated in flexible bronchoscopy with the only use of biopsy forceps. Another case with a different localization in the left main bronchus was treated with a laser through rigid bronchoscopy. In addition, the authors outline the main interventional pulmonological strategies for the treatment of benign tumors with endobronchial growth based on the existing literature.

Phlogopite solid-solutions have a wide pressure–temperature (P-T) stability field and are ubiquitous in a wide variety of geological settings, from deep lithosphere magmatic environments to upper crust metamorphic domains. Phlogopite composition represents therefore a valuable physical–chemical archive and may provide important information regarding its crystallization and the petrogenesis of the host-rock. In this paper we examine the phlogopite phenocrysts from the well-known Fort Regent mica-bearing lamprophyre minette from St. Helier (Island of Jersey, UK). Phlogopite phenocrystals from lamprophyres generally show normal-step and continuous compositional zoning, however those from the Fort Regent minette show a peculiar texture characterized by dark brown high-Ti (average TiO2 ≈ 8.5 wt.%) cores enveloped by euhedral low- to mid-amplitude zonation due to oscillatory contents in Ti, Fe and Mg. Thermo-barometry modelling based on biotite-only composition yields relatively high P-T estimates (T ≈ 970 ± 54 °C at P ≈ 0.73 ± 0.13 GPa) for cores whereas lower values (T ≈ 790 ± 54 °C at P ≈ 0.29 ± 0.13 GPa) are obtained for the outer rims. Comparable temperatures (T ≈ 1075 ± 54 °C) but extremely high and anomalous pressure values (P ≈ 1.82 ± 0.13 GPa) are obtained for the yellowish inner rims. The combination of electron micro probe (EMP) analysis and single-crystal infra-red (FTIR) imaging in the OH-stretching region shows that the exceptional and oscillatory Ti contents are due to the Ti-vacancy substitution, typical of crystallization and growth processes of HP/HT environments. Raman imaging provides additional insight for this process, confirming the dominant dioctahedral nature for the Ti-Fe-rich cores and outer rims. Interpretation of thermobaric estimates obtained from the phlogopite composition-only model, based on the fine-scale compositional evolution, shows that pressure–temperature values from low-Ti high-Mg domains should be carefully evaluated because the substitution mechanisms during the dark mica growth are not univocally related to pressure–temperature variation of the crystallizing environment. Our results demonstrate how a multidisciplinary approach based on the combination of chemical investigations and vibrational spectroscopies could represent a valuable tool to evaluate pressure–temperature estimates from biotite composition-only thermo-barometry models and therefore to correctly unravel HP/HT petrogenetic processes at a very fine scale.
