In 2017, a hemimandible (MW5-B208), corresponding to the Ethiopian wolf (Canis simensis), was found in a stratigraphically-controlled and radio-isotopically-dated sequence of the Melka Wakena paleoanthropological site-complex, on the Southeastern Ethiopian Highlands, ~ 2300 m above sea level. The specimen is the first and unique Pleistocene fossil of this species. Our data provide an unambiguous minimum age of 1.6-1.4 Ma for the species' presence in Africa and constitutes the first empirical evidence that supports molecular interpretations. Currently, C. simensis is one of the most endangered carnivore species of Africa. Bioclimate niche modeling applied to the time frame indicated by the fossil suggests that the lineage of the Ethiopian wolf faced severe survival challenges in the past, with consecutive drastic geographic range contractions during warmer periods. These models help to describe future scenarios for the survival of the species. Projections ranging from most pessimistic to most optimistic future climatic scenarios indicate significant reduction of the already-deteriorating territories suitable for the Ethiopian Wolf, increasing the threat to the specie's future survival. Additionally, the recovery of the Melka Wakena fossil underscores the importance of work outside the East African Rift System in research of early human origins and associated biodiversity on the African continent.

While anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACL-R) has been considered the gold standard for ACL tears, renewed interest in ACL repair has emerged. This review aims to examine the current knowledge regarding ACL repair. A comprehensive literature search was conducted on the PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Embase databases, focusing on the most recent studies up to January 2024. Arthroscopic ACL repair has several advantages, such as resulting in a natural ligament with proprioceptive properties, preservation, and donor graft comorbidity absence. Several ACL repair surgical procedures have been developed thanks to the advancement in new fixation devices. The current literature showed that when performed on a suitable patient with the appropriate lesion type, corresponding to the proximal third with good tissue quality, ACL repair leads to satisfactory outcomes. Despite the benefits of ACL repair with promising results, ACL-R remains the gold standard for ACL lesions. There is still a lack of literature analyzing long-term outcomes; large series with homogenous populations and types of lesions are lacking. Based on the current evidence, further research and higher-quality studies investigating ACL repair will be necessary.

Abstract Taphonomic deformation, whether it be brittle or plastic, is possibly the most influential process hindering the correct understanding of fossil species morphology. This is especially true if the deformation affects type specimens or applies to or obscures taxonomically diagnostic or functionally significant traits. Target Deformation, a recently developed virtual manipulation protocol, was implemented to address this issue by applying landmark-guided restoration of the original, deformed fossils, using undeformed specimens (or parts thereof) of the same species as a reference. The enigmatic Early Pleistocene canid Canis arnensis provides a typical example of a fossil species in dire need of virtual restoration. Its lectotype specimen is heavily deformed and none of the few known skulls are well preserved, obscuring the recognition of its systematic and phylogenetic position. Our results indicate that the algorithm effectively countered the lectotype skull’s laterolateral compression and its concomitant rostrocaudal elongation. Morphometrically, comparison of the retrodeformed cranium (IGF 867_W) with other specimens of the same species, and to other fossil and extant canid material, confirms IGF 867_W consistently clusters within C. arnensis variability. Overall, the evidence presented here confirms that Target Deformation provides a powerful tool to better characterize complex taxa like C. arnensis, whose knowledge is severely affected by the state of preservation of its fossil material.

Otters, subfamily Lutrinae (Mustelidae), are predators that thrive in aquatic environments, and have a semiaquatic to fully aquatic lifestyle. While modern otters are found across the globe, their fossil history is limited, primarily documented by fragmented dentognathic remains. In this work, we report on and describe new dental remains of a medium-sized Lutrinae from the Late Miocene of Baccinello and Casteani (Tuscany), improving the poor fossil record of the subfamily in Europe. Tyrrhenolutra helbingi Hürzeler, 1987 is a poorly known species, described on some dental remains from the Baccinello mines and a few other localities. Considering its peculiar morphology, it has often been overlooked in the scientific literature. Description of the material stored at the Naturhistorisches Museum, Basel and Museo di Geologia e Paleontologia dell’Università di Firenze offers new insights on the intraspecific variability and dental morphology of this taxon. The comparative study of these findings highlights several morphological and biometrical similarities between T. helbingi and Paludolutra maremmana Hürzeler, 1987, which allow us to redefine these taxa as Tyrrhenolutra maremmana nov. comb. We carried out a total-evidence cladistic analysis seeking support for morphometric and morphological similarities between T. “helbingi” and “P.” maremmana. The resulting parsimony analyses support the synonymy, excluding a close relationship of T. maremmana with Paludolutra of Italy and Spain, as previously thought. Furthermore, we confirm a long-forgotten hypothesis identifying Limnonyx Crusafont Pairó, 1950 as the possible continental ancestor of Tyrrhenolutra.

Non-prosthetic peri-implant fractures (NPPIFs) are often reported mixed with periprosthetic fractures (PPFs), but they are different entities. Due to the increase in the age of the world’s population and to the intensification of surgeries for fractures, nowadays, peri-implant fractures are a very frequent entity in clinical practice, with an increasing trend expected in the future. A clear exclusive classification of NPPIFs is not reported in the literature. The aim of this study is to provide a valid comprehensive classification for all the NPPIFs. X-rays of all the peri-implant cases treated in our unit in a 3-year period were retrospectively collected. Five orthopedic surgeons reviewed 30 X-rays of NPPIFs, providing a code according to the classification proposed. After a 3-month interval, they reviewed the same X-rays. Eighteen femoral, eight humeral, and four forearm peri-implant fractures were collected and showed to the raters. Inter- and intra-observer reliability was calculated using a k-statistic, showing a moderate agreement between observers (κ = 0.73) and a substantial agreement between the observations of the same viewer (κ = 0.82). The literature lacks a comprehensive classification for peri-implant fractures that considers all the bones and all the types of implants. The proposed classification is meant to be an instrument for orthopedic surgeons to categorize these types of fractures and seems to be simple, easy to comprehend, and reproducible. This new classification can provide the orthopedic surgeon a reliable method to clearly catalogue different fractures according to the site and the implants; the physicians can use it, through a code, in clinical practice to describe an NPPIF without the need of images. Further studies may be necessary to confirm the validity and eventually to improve the suggested classification.

Abstract An in-depth study of the Early Pleistocene European remains of Hippopotamus has allowed the first detailed description of the incidence and types of dental alterations related to palaeopathologies and potentially linked to climatic and environmental factors. The results of a long-term qualitative and quantitative assessment highlight the importance of nutrient deficiencies on the development of dental enamel hypoplasia in Hippopotamus. Glacial cyclicity and the resulting changes in humidity and plant community structure conditioned the local environments critical for the survival of this taxon. Two main intervals of putative constrained nutritionally restrictions were detected at ca. 1.8 Ma and ca. 0.86 Ma (i.e., MIS63 and MIS21, respectively). Statistical comparisons show an increase in the frequency of dental hypoplasia between these two chronological periods, thus reinforcing the idea of increased seasonality in the circum-Mediterranean environments during the Early Pleistocene.

The Vallparadís Section encompasses various geological layers that span a significant chronological range, extending from the latest Early Pleistocene to the early Middle Pleistocene, covering a timeframe from approximately 1.2 to 0.6 Ma. This period holds particular importance, as it coincides with a significant climatic transition known as the Early–Middle Pleistocene Transition, a pivotal phase in Quaternary climatic history. This transition, marked by the shift from a 41,000-year obliquity-driven climatic cycle to a 100,000-year precession-forced cyclicity, had profound effects on the Calabrian carnivorous mammal communities. Notably, the once diverse carnivore guild began to decline across Europe during this period, with their last documented occurrences coinciding with those found within the Vallparadís Section (e.g., Megantereon or Xenocyon). Concurrently, this period witnessed the initial dispersals of African carnivorans into the European landscape (e.g., steppe lions), marking a significant shift in the composition and dynamics of the region’s carnivorous fauna.

Despite technological advancements with robotic-assisted surgery, instability remains a challenge in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Mid-flexion instability (MFI) has been reported to cause patient dissatisfaction. With no universal diagnostic criteria, the MFI concept is still ambiguous, and no specific treatment algorithm is defined. This study aims to analyze the MFI concept and risk factors and investigate how robotic surgery, compared to manual TKA, could impact the MFI concept. A comprehensive investigation of the current literature regarding MIF, focusing especially on its relationship with robotic surgery TKA, was conducted using the PubMed and Scopus databases. The MIF concept remains poorly understood, so it is crucial to prevent it by recognizing risk factors, which are technique-related, implant-related, and patient-related. Since robotics offers optimal balancing in TKA and reduces causes affecting MFI, it could indirectly impact and prevent this complication. This review suggests that robotics utilization improving TKA balancing has the potential to impact and reduce MFI. However, further research in this area is essential to provide insight regarding the role of robotics in mitigating the MFI risk.

Organic room temperature phosphorescent (ORTP) materials with stimuli-responsive, multicomponent emissive behaviour are extremely desirable for various applications. The derivative of cyclic triimidazole (TT) functionalized with an ethynyl group, TT-CCH, is isolated and investigated. The compound possesses crystallization-enhanced emission (CEE) comprising dual fluorescence and dual phosphorescence of both molecular and supramolecular origin with aggregation-induced components highly sensitive to grinding. The mechanisms involved in the emissions have been disclosed thanks to combined structural, spectroscopic and computational investigations. In particular, strong CH⋯N hydrogen bonds are deemed responsible, for the first time in the TT family, together with frequently observed π⋯π stacking interactions, for the aggregated fluorescence and phosphorescence.

Organic materials characterized by multi-component emissive behavior including RTP features are extremely desirable for various applications. Frequently, long lasting emissions of solids are originated from intermolecular interactions whose role is far from being fully understood. In this context, positional isomers with similar molecular properties but different packing arrangement can be a useful tool to get a deeper comprehension of the mechanisms involved in the solid state emissive behavior. Here, the results obtained on two derivatives of cyclic triimidazole (TT) functionalized with a pyridin-2-yl or 4-yl ethynyl group are presented and interpreted through spectroscopical, structural and computational studies. The two isomers are hardly emissive in solution but become good emitters in blended PMMA films displaying almost overlapping fluorescence and phosphorescence. In solid-state, two additional lower energy phosphorescences are activated through the establishment of either π-π stacking or synergic π-π/hydrogen bond interactions. Stronger aggregated RTP features are observed in the pyridin-2-ylethynyl derivative which displays tighter π-π stacking interactions.

Introduction: Nurses are at high risk of developing a psychiatric disorder as a result of exposure to stressful and/or traumatic events experienced in the workplace. Specifically, they may develop long-term depression or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The spread of the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed nurses to stressful working conditions. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of mental and physical stress on nurses who provided assistance in the Emergency Room (ER) of Piacenza Hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A sample of 43 nurses working in the ER from 8 March to 3 May 2020 was enrolled. Each nurse was asked to fill in a form containing socio-demographic data and the "Screening Questionnaire for Disaster Mental Health" (SQD). The study was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Area Vasta Emilia Nord. Results: The SQD-D sub-scale results showed that 38 out of 43 nurses (88%) had “less likely to be depressed” and the remaining 5 (12%) had “more likely to be depressed”. Regarding the likelihood of developing PTSD, SQD-P sub-scale results, 29 nurses (67%) little possibility to be affected, 8 nurses (19%) classify themselves as moderately affected, and finally 6 nurses present as severely affected. The Cronbach's alpha for the scale was 0.80, for the SQD-P was 0.73 and for the SQD-D it was 0.68. The correlations between age and SQD and between years of service and SQD were not statistically significant. Conclusions: The study showed that some nurses are at high risk of developing depression or PTSD in stressful work situations such as those caused by COVID-19. These data can be used to suggest preventive measures such as psychological support.

Introduction: Paleontological heritage rarely receives the same legislative attention as archeological heritage. Part of the problem seems to be, at least in some contexts (e.g., Italy), the difficulty of acknowledging fossils as distinct assets from other cultural heritage objects and the lack of expertise among the administrative functionaries. This study aims to describe and test an objective analytic operational procedure that could allow for the assessment of the relevance of any fossiliferous site and its potential vulnerability in its present state.Methods: The estimations were obtained using several quantitative and qualitative parameters that could describe the probability of fossil recovery for each site (Pr) and the scientific and cultural interest of the locality (In). Each parameter has subcategories for better defining. The product of probability and interest results in the scientific value (S), generally expressed as a percentage (S*). The vulnerability index (V) of productive and active sites considers the use of the land (U) and the natural erosion (E). The parameters were thought to apply to any type of fossil locality. We tested the indexes on 22 localities (7 of which were with paleoichnological records and 15 with direct body-fossil evidence), all different from one another.Results: The results show that the proposed indexes well describe and characterize each locality. Most of the sites are moderately vulnerable (V between 1 and 3) except for large quarry sites (e.g., Pirro Nord, Italy and Solnhofen, Germany) whose vulnerability indexes fell in the maximum degree of risk.Discussion: The operational procedure presented here is a simple, objective, and remotely applicable method allowing paleontologists and non-expert personnel to categorize localities and, therefore, act as a base to plan actions in paleontological heritage management relative to territorial development and land use.

IntroductionThe phylogenetic and ecological importance of paranasal sinuses in carnivorans was highlighted by several previous authors, mostly in extant species. Nevertheless, no specific study on this feature on extant canids, and no one on fossil representatives of the family, has been published up to now. Here, we analyze for the first time the paranasal sinus of extant and fossil canids through computed tomographic techniques to characterize them morphologically and morphometrically, making ecological inferences.MethodsTo do so, we applied for the first time an innovative deformation-based morphometric approach.ResultsThe results obtained for extant species highlight a remarkable correlation between morphology and ecomorphotypes previously defined by some scholars (namely hypercarnivorous group-hunters; small-prey hypercarnivores, mesocarnivores, hypocarnivores). Our results thus support the direct relationship between diet preferences and the development of frontal sinus in canids. Regarding fossil specimens, we reconstructed for the first time the frontal sinus of three Eucyon species and compared it to those of living forms.DiscussionThe best-preserved specimen, the only known cranium of Eucyon adoxus dated to the Late Pliocene of Saint-Estève (France), displayed similarities with hypercarnivorous group-hunter canids by the large sinus prominences. Given that the overall craniodental morphology of E. adoxus suggests that it acted as a small prey hypercarnivore—similar to extant Canis simensis—the aforementioned affinities might have evolved independently, in relation to high stresses during feeding. Overall, our study demonstrates that morphological inspection and deformation-based geometric morphometrics complement each other and allow a thorough investigation of sinus shape variability, thus enabling the study of sinus morphology in other fossil carnivorans with the ultimate goal of inferring their ecological preferences.

Abstract Background: In recent years, ultrasound has represented a new field of application for nursing. Point of Care UltraSound (POCUS) has been defined as an essential skill in the pre-hospital setting. The primary objective of this scoping review is to describe what are the main ultrasound techniques applied by nurses in the pre-hospital emergency setting. The secondary objective is to identify the different training courses implemented in the various studies selected to learn the necessary ultrasound skills. Methods: We conducted a scoping review. The following databases were consulted: PubMed, Cochrane Library, CINAHL and Google Scholar. For the extraction of useful articles, after identifying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, the PRISMA methodology was used, two authors independently analyzed the identified records, in the event of a conflict a third author intervened. Results: The identified records were initially 815. After the duplicates removal, and screening made by the researcher for inclusion criteria, 6 articles were retrieved for qualitative analysis. The most discussed topic is the recognition of pneumothorax: two studies analyzed a specific educational program on ultrasound for flight nurses, three articles evaluated the us of US to verify the correct insertion of devices, and two explored the skills of nurses in performing ultrasound scans. The first study stated that nurses had 86.4% accuracy, 66.6% sensitivity and 100% specificity in ultrasound using; in the second one, nurses had a sensitivity and specificity of 100% in non-traumatized patients and a sensitivity of 60% and a specificity of 93% in trauma patients. Conclusions: Despite the methodological differences of the selected records, the main ultrasound techniques implemented by nurses in the Emergency Medical Service (EMS) are Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma (FAST), Extendend Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma (E-FAST), evaluation of pneumothorax and visualization of correct insertion of devices (Endotracheal Tube, Nasogastric Tube). At the level of training in the ultrasound field, on the other hand, a certain heterogeneity is highlighted in the structuring of training courses, both in terms of hours of theory and of controlled practice.

The paper intends to study the construction of the childhood imagination on diversity starting from two different sources and narratives, aware of the fact that they have equally contributed to picturing and shaping ideas and images of one other on young minds. The contribution’s main aim is to highlight how cultural diversity has been represented in formal and informal education, through the analysis of textbooks and children’s literature. To this end, Italian textbooks and novels published from the 1980s to 2000 have been selected in order to retrace cultural changes at a historical level and how both school and children's literature have responded to the challenges of an increasingly culturally heterogeneous society. The analysis showed that while the best children’s literature offers alternatives and intercultural models to the young readers who know how to recognize and choose a good story establishing a rupture with the representations conveyed in the texts and novels of previous decades. Textbooks, for their part, are placed in continuity, they are slow to recognise and value cultural diversity.

This paper analyses the representation of flight in children's narratives in Italy from the Libyan war to the end of the Second World War. For this period, it is possible to see an escalation in the centrality of the theme of flight, functional to the construction of the myth of the aviator which reaches its peak during fascism. The regime used the subject of flight extensively for propaganda purposes and to further consolidate those that were the fascist values: strength, the mastery and the conquest of the earth and the sky, and the supremacy of Italian spirit through technological and engineering advancement. The construction of the myth of the aviator made use of a variety of tools aimed at children, through the definition of an "aeronautical pedagogy". Such construction aimed to stress the Italian superiority against the Arab and African inferiority. The theme of flight sanctioned and reaffirmed this hierarchy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Materials based on small molecules characterized by multi‐component short and long‐lived emissive behaviour are extremely desirable for various applications. The derivative of cyclic triimidazole (TT) functionalized with a carboxylic group, namely TT‐COOH, is isolated, investigated and used as coordinative ligand to obtain a series of isomorphous mononuclear complexes of general formula [M(TT‐COO)2(H2O)2] (M=Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II) and Cd(II)). Crystals of TT‐COOH display aggregation induced enhanced emission (AIEE) comprising dual fluorescence and dual phosphorescence of molecular origin together with an aggregation induced long lived, low energy phosphorescence. Emissive features are retained in crystals of the Zn(II) and Cd(II) complexes, where the metal plays the role of an external heavy atom perturber, but strongly quenched in the others. The mechanisms involved in the photophysics of TT‐COOH and its metal complexes have been disclosed thanks to combined structural, spectroscopic and computational investigations which reveal the presence of anti‐Kasha emissions. (1) Background: despite the fact that nowadays the genus Vulpes Frisch, 1775, is the most diverse among extant Canidae, its fossil record is utterly scarce, especially in the Asian Pliocene. The sparse nature of this record further complicates the reconstruction of the evolutionary scenario to fit these taxa with extant species. The situation seems to change slightly in the Early Pleistocene when two species are recorded: Vulpes alopecoides (Del Campana, 1913) in Europe and Vulpes chikushanensis, Young, 1930, in Asian localities. Unlike the former, which has an extensive record, the remains of the Chinese V. chikushanensis are sporadic and the validity of the taxon has also been questioned. (2) Methods: the study of the specimens from the Early Pleistocene site of Bajiazui (1.8–1.2 Ma, Qingyang, Gansu) in comparison to an extensive sample of Vulpes spp. The Pliocene–Early Pleistocene is relevant for the delimitation of fossil foxes variability; (3) Results: morphologically and morphometrically, the specimens of Bajiazui fit with the specimens of V. chikushanensis from other Chinese localities of the Early Pleistocene, e.g., Longdan (Gansu) and Huiyu (Fangshang), highlighting some difference with the latest Early Pleistocene forms of Jigushan fox; (4) Conclusions: the revision of the Asian fossil record of Vulpes is crucial in our attempt to understand and reconstruct the evolution of carnivoran guild during the late Early Pleistocene (1.8–0.8 Ma). The fox remains from Bajiazui, although fragmentary, add a valuable piece to our knowledge of V. chikushanensis, a species possibly strongly related to the extant Vulpes corsac (Linnaeus, 1768).

The knowledge on the anatomy, function and biomechanics and the role of surgical procedures on the anterolateral ligament (ALL) of the knee is still controversial. Only a few papers have examined the ALL in children. The aim of this review is to analyze all the available literature about ALL in the pediatric population. Following the PRISMA criteria, the literature was systematically reviewed, examining all the articles about ALL in pediatric patients. Eight articles were involved in this study. Five cadaveric studies, two diagnostic studies, and one cross-sectional study were found. The identification of the ALL is not always possible in diagnostic studies using magnetic resonance (MRI) or in dissecting specimens. A high variability in the presence of the ligament and in its origin and insertion were found among the studies. It is more difficult to identify the ligament in younger patients than in older children, suggesting that its presence may develop at some point during the growth. Further studies are needed for a detailed knowledge of the ALL.

Abstract The renowned site of Dmanisi in Georgia, southern Caucasus (ca. 1.8 Ma) yielded the earliest direct evidence of hominin presence out of Africa. In this paper, we report on the first record of a large-sized canid from this site, namely dentognathic remains, referable to a young adult individual that displays hypercarnivorous features (e.g., the reduction of the m1 metaconid and entoconid) that allow us to include these specimens in the hypodigm of the late Early Pleistocene species Canis (Xenocyon) lycaonoides. Much fossil evidence suggests that this species was a cooperative pack-hunter that, unlike other large-sized canids, was capable of social care toward kin and non-kin members of its group. This rather derived hypercarnivorous canid, which has an East Asian origin, shows one of its earliest records at Dmanisi in the Caucasus, at the gates of Europe. Interestingly, its dispersal from Asia to Europe and Africa followed a parallel route to that of hominins, but in the opposite direction. Hominins and hunting dogs, both recorded in Dmanisi at the beginning of their dispersal across the Old World, are the only two Early Pleistocene mammal species with proved altruistic behaviour towards their group members, an issue discussed over more than one century in evolutionary biology.
