Abstract The current Marburg virus (MARV) outbreak in Tanzania served as a stark reminder of the ongoing threat posed by emerging infectious diseases and the urgent need for global health security. The Tanzanian Ministry of Health (MoH) officially declared the outbreak on March 21, 2023. Eight cases in all, five of which included fatalities, have been reported in the country at present. The virus is a member of the Filoviridae family closely related to the widely known Ebola virus. Similar to other filoviruses, MARV causes acute and lethal hemorrhagic fever in both human and nonhuman primates with high case fatality rates ranging from 24% to 90%. The outbreak has highlighted the need for improved disease surveillance and response systems, as well as increased funding for research into emerging infectious diseases. The Tanzanian MoH has deployed a response team to investigate and monitor the transmission in the Kagera Region. The team works closely in collaboration with other organizations, such as the World Health Organization and the Africa Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, to ensure the effective control of the situation. Although there is no vaccine or treatment approved for Marburg virus disease (MVD), supportive management improves survival. Existing infection prevention and control protocols for Ebola and other viral hemorrhagic fevers such as isolation and use of appropriate personal protective equipment can be used to prevent transmission of MVD. The global community must work together to strengthen health systems, enhance research efforts, and build resilient and responsive health systems to prevent future outbreaks of this kind. In this article, we have analyzed the MVD outbreak in Tanzania, specifically in the Bukoba district of the Kagera Region, and provided recommendations for the management of the current outbreak and future outbreaks.

Cancer is a major global health challenge, with approximately 19.3 million new cases and 10 million deaths estimated by 2020. Laboratory advancements in cancer detection have transformed diagnostic capabilities, particularly through the use of biomarkers that play crucial roles in risk assessment, therapy selection, and disease monitoring. Tumor histology, single-cell technology, flow cytometry, molecular imaging, liquid biopsy, immunoassays, and molecular diagnostics have emerged as pivotal tools for cancer detection. The integration of artificial intelligence, particularly deep learning and convolutional neural networks, has enhanced the diagnostic accuracy and data analysis capabilities. However, developing countries face significant challenges including financial constraints, inadequate healthcare infrastructure, and limited access to advanced diagnostic technologies. The impact of COVID-19 has further complicated cancer management in resource-limited settings. Future research should focus on precision medicine and early cancer diagnosis through sophisticated laboratory techniques to improve prognosis and health outcomes. This review examines the evolving landscape of cancer detection, focusing on laboratory research breakthroughs and limitations in developing countries, while providing recommendations for advancing tumor diagnostics in resource-constrained environments. Oropouche fever is an increasingly significant health concern in tropical and subtropical areas of South and Central America, and is primarily spread by midge vectors. The Oropouche virus (OROV) was first identified in 1955 and has been responsible for numerous outbreaks, particularly in urban environments. Despite its prevalence, the disease is often under-reported, making it difficult to fully understand its impact. OROV typically causes febrile illness characterized by symptoms such as headaches, muscle pain, and, occasionally, neurological issues such as meningitis. The ability of the virus to thrive in both forested and urban areas has raised concerns regarding its potential spread to new regions, particularly in the context of climate change. This paper delves into the epidemiology, clinical features, and transmission patterns of OROV, shedding light on the difficulties in diagnosing and managing the disease. The absence of specific treatments and vaccines highlights the urgent need for continued research and development of targeted public health strategies. Advancements in molecular diagnostics and vector control strategies can mitigate Oropouche fever's impact. However, a comprehensive public health approach involving increased surveillance, public education, and cross-border collaboration is needed, especially as the global climate crisis may expand vector habitats, posing risks to previously unaffected regions. Vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) represents a significant advancement in therapeutic medicine, offering unique molecular and cellular characteristics that make it exceptionally suitable for medical applications. The bullet-shaped morphology, RNA genome organization, and cytoplasmic replication strategy provide fundamental advantages for both vaccine development and oncolytic applications. VSV's interaction with host cells through the low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDL-R) and its sophisticated transcriptional regulation mechanisms enables precise control over therapeutic applications. The virus demonstrates remarkable versatility through its rapid replication cycle, robust immune response induction, and natural neurotropism. Recent technological innovations in VSV engineering have led to enhanced safety protocols and improved therapeutic modifications, particularly in cancer treatment. Attenuation strategies have successfully addressed safety concerns while maintaining the therapeutic efficacy of the virus. The molecular and cellular interactions of VSV, particularly its immune modulation capabilities and tumor-selective properties, have proven valuable in the development of targeted therapeutic strategies. Meat handling is a crucial aspect of public health as it forms complex interactions among humans, animals, and the environment. African meat handlers continue to face various challenges in slaughterhouses that significantly impact their lives and the general public during meat processing. This paper reviews the challenges meat handlers encounter and the associated risks of improper meat handling in various African slaughterhouses. A comprehensive literature search was performed on Science Direct, Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus and Google Scholar. Articles published to investigate the challenges and health risks of meat handling practices in Africa from 1961 to 2022 were included in this review. African meat handlers face socio-economic difficulties, including inadequate returns, unpredictable working environment, market, security, and limited healthcare access. Many meat handlers work informally in unregistered facilities and are not trained by experts on proper meat handling. This results in improper meat handling, raising the possibility of meat contamination by foodborne pathogens like Salmonella sp. and E. coli on slaughter and contact surfaces, hence posing a threat to meat safety and public health. We recommended that governmental, institutional and community-level actions should be used to address the health challenges associated with improper meat handling in Africa. Government and institutional bodies play an important role in supporting and upholding the laws that guide proper meat handling and processing. Introduction: Quality of life (QoL) is a vital healthcare indicator among people living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLWHA). Assessing the effects of comorbidities on QoL among PLWHA is of clinical and public health importance. This study compared the QoL of comorbid and non-comorbid PLWHA at St. Gerard's Catholic Hospital (SGCH), Kaduna. Methods: This was a prospective cross-sectional study of 178 conveniently selected and stratified comorbid PLWHA and 172 non-comorbid PLWHA receiving care at the facility. Data was collected using a structured, interviewer-administered instrument. The QoL scores were statistically compared using the Mann‒Whitney U test. P <0.05 was considered statistically significant for all the analyses. Results: Most respondents were aged 35 – 54 years (65.2% and 66.4% for comorbid and non-comorbid patients respectively), were female (70.8% and 69.2% for comorbid and non-comorbid patients respectively) and married (67.4% and 59.3% for comorbid and non-comorbid patients respectively). For all QoL domains (perception of QoL and general health, physical health, psychological health, level of independence, social relationship, environment, and spirituality/religion/personal beliefs), there was evidence the distribution of values was significantly lower in the comorbid PLWHA compared to the non-comorbid PLWHA (p<0.001), with the largest difference seen for physical health. The mean physical health (interquartile range) was 9 (7-10) and 17 (15-19) for comorbid and non-comorbid PLWHA respectively. The most prevalent comorbidities among the PLWHA were hypertension 97 (54.49%) and diabetes 36 (20.22%). Conclusion: Non-comorbid PLWHA had better QoL than comorbid PLWHA in all the QoL domains and the greatest difference was observed in physical health. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic created a massive shift in how health care systems interact with COVID testing for patients. To avoid delay in accessing second trimester surgical abortion at our hospital (St. Paul's Hospital Millennium Medical College) during this pandemic, dilation and evacuation (D&E) procedures were attended as emergency cases, instead of as elective surgical procedures, which then required adherence to the universal preoperative COVID-19 testing protocol. This study aimed at documenting the experience of this unique abortion service adjustment in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This was a retrospective descriptive study conducted at St. Paul's Hospital Millennium Medical College (SPHMMC) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from April 1, 2021 to July 31, 2021. We reviewed second trimester surgical abortion cases managed with D& E procedures, performed under spinal anesthesia using the emergency COVID-19 pre-operative testing protocol. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 23 and simple descriptive statistics were applied. Percentages and proportions were used to present the results. Results: Nineteen cases of second trimester D&E cases were reviewed. The median gestational age of the abortion clients was 21.57 weeks. Eight of 19 cases had cervical preparation with overnight intra-cervical Foley catheter placement while the rest 11 (57.9%) cases had their cervical preparation with Laminaria. The median time interval from initial evaluation of the abortion client to time of doing D& E procedure was 21.83 h. Conclusion: Surgical abortion service reorganization enabled abortion clients to access dilation and evacuation procedures within 24 h of their initial presentation. This prevented significant delays in accessing abortion care that could otherwise have occurred as a result of adhering to the preoperative COVID-19 testing protocols applied to elective surgeries.
