We present six new time-delay measurements obtained from $R_c$-band monitoring data acquired at the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics (MPIA) 2.2 m telescope at La Silla observatory between October 2016 and February 2020. The lensed quasars HE 0047-1756, WG 0214-2105, DES 0407-5006, 2M 1134-2103, PSJ 1606-2333 and DES 2325-5229 were observed almost daily at high signal-to-noise ratio to obtain high-quality light curves where we can record fast and small-amplitude variations of the quasars. We measured time delays between all pairs of multiple images with only one or two seasons of monitoring with the exception of the time delays relative to image D of PSJ 1606-2333. The most precise estimate was obtained for the delay between image A and image B of DES 0407-5006, where $\tau_{AB} = -128.4^{+3.5}_{-3.8}$ d (2.8% precision) including systematics due to extrinsic variability in the light curves. For HE 0047-1756, we combined our high-cadence data with measurements from decade-long light curves from previous COSMOGRAIL campaigns, and reach a precision of 0.9 d on the final measurement. We investigate the spatially resolved stellar populations of a sample of seven nearby massive Early-type galaxies (ETGs), using optical and near infrared data, including K-band spectroscopy. This data offers good prospects for mitigating the uncertainties inherent in stellar population modelling by making a wide variety of strong spectroscopic features available. We report new VLT-KMOS measurements of the average empirical radial gradients out to the effective radius in the strengths of the Ca I 1.98$\mu$m and 2.26$\mu$m features, the Na I 2.21$\mu$m line, and the CO 2.30$\mu$m bandhead. Following previous work, which has indicated an excess of dwarf stars in the cores of massive ETGs, we pay specific attention to radial variations in the stellar initial mass function (IMF) as well as modelling the chemical abundance patterns and stellar population ages in our sample. Using state-of-the-art stellar population models we infer an [Fe/H] gradient of -0.16$\pm$0.05 per dex in fractional radius and an average [Na/Fe] gradient of -0.35$\pm$0.09. We find a large but radially-constant enhancement to [Mg/Fe] of $\sim$ 0.4 and a much lower [Ca/Fe] enhancement of $\sim$ 0.1. Finally, we find no significant IMF radial gradient in our sample on average and find that most galaxies in our sample are consistent with having a Milky Way-like IMF, or at most a modestly bottom heavy IMF (e.g. less dwarf enriched than a single power law IMF with the Salpeter slope)., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We perform a detailed study of the location of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) on the fundamental plane of black hole (BH) accretion, which is an empirical correlation between a BH X-ray and radio luminosity and mass supported by theoretical models of accretion. The sample comprises 72 BCGs out to $z\sim0.3$ and with reliable nuclear X-ray and radio luminosities. These are found to correlate as $L_\mathrm{X} \propto L_\mathrm{R}^{0.75 \pm 0.08}$, favoring an advection-dominated accretion flow as the origin of the X-ray emission. BCGs are found to be on average offset from the fundamental plane such that their BH masses seem to be underestimated by the $M_\mathrm{BH}-M_\mathrm{K}$ relation a factor $\sim$10. The offset is not explained by jet synchrotron cooling and is independent of emission process or amount of cluster gas cooling. Those core-dominated BCGs are found to be more significantly offset than those with weak core radio emission. For BCGs to on average follow the fundamental plane, a large fraction ($\sim40\%$) should have BH masses $> 10^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$ and thus host ultramassive BHs. The local BH-galaxy scaling relations would not hold for these extreme objects. The possible explanations for their formation, either via a two-phase process (the BH formed first, the galaxy grows later) or as descendants of high-z seed BHs, challenge the current paradigm of a synchronized galaxy-BH growth., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 22 pages, 12 figures

Pan-STARRS1 has carried out a set of distinct synoptic imaging sky surveys including the $3\pi$ Steradian Survey and the Medium Deep Survey in 5 bands ($grizy_{P1}$). The mean 5$\sigma$ point source limiting sensitivities in the stacked 3$\pi$ Steradian Survey in $grizy_{P1}$ are (23.3, 23.2, 23.1, 22.3, 21.4) respectively. The upper bound on the systematic uncertainty in the photometric calibration across the sky is 7-12 millimag depending on the bandpass. The systematic uncertainty of the astrometric calibration using the Gaia frame comes from a comparison of the results with Gaia: the standard deviation of the mean and median residuals ($ \Delta ra, \Delta dec $) are (2.3, 1.7) milliarcsec, and (3.1, 4.8) milliarcsec respectively. The Pan-STARRS system and the design of the PS1 surveys are described and an overview of the resulting image and catalog data products and their basic characteristics are described together with a summary of important results. While Norma (ACO3627) is the richest cluster in the Great Attractor (GA) region, its role in the local dynamics is poorly understood. The Norma cluster has a mean redshift (z_CMB) of 0.0165 and has been proposed as the "core" of the GA. We have used the Ks-band Fundamental Plane (FP) to measure Norma cluster's distance with respect to the Coma cluster. We report FP photometry parameters (effective radii and surface brightnesses), derived from ESO NTT SOFI images, and velocity dispersions, from AAT 2dF spectroscopy, for 31 early-type galaxies in the cluster. For the Coma cluster we use 2MASS images and SDSS velocity dispersion measurements for 121 early-type galaxies to generate the calibrating FP dataset. For the combined Norma-Coma sample we measure FP coefficients of a=1.465+/-0.059 and b=0.326+/-0.020. We find an rms scatter, in log(central velocity dispersion) of 0.08 dex which corresponds to a distance uncertainty of 28% per galaxy. The zero point offset between Norma's and Coma's FPs is 0.154+/-0.014 dex. Assuming that the Coma cluster is at rest with respect to the cosmic microwave background frame and z_CMB(Coma)=0.0240, we derive a distance to the Norma cluster of 5026+/-160 km/s, and the derived peculiar velocity is -72+/-170 km/s, i.e., consistent with zero. This is lower than previously reported positive peculiar velocities for clusters/groups/galaxies in the GA region and hence the Norma cluster may indeed represent the GA's "core"., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Using deep, high-spatial resolution imaging from the HST ACS Coma Cluster Treasury Survey, we determine colour profiles of early-type galaxies in the Coma cluster. From 176 galaxies brighter than $M_\mathrm{F814W(AB)} = -15$ mag that are either spectroscopically confirmed members of Coma or identified by eye as likely members from their low surface brightness, data are provided for 142 early-type galaxies. Typically, colour profiles are linear against $\log(R)$, sometimes with a nuclear region of distinct, often bluer colour associated with nuclear clusters. Colour gradients are determined for the regions outside the nuclear components. We find that almost all colour gradients are negative, both for elliptical and lenticular galaxies. Most likely, earlier studies that report positive colour gradients in dwarf galaxies are affected by the bluer colours of the nuclear clusters, underlining that high resolution data are essential to disentangle the colour properties of the different morphological components in galaxies. Colour gradients of dwarf galaxies form a continuous sequence with those of elliptical galaxies, becoming shallower toward fainter magnitudes. Interpreting the colours as metallicity tracers, our data suggest that dwarfs as well as giant early-type galaxies in the Coma cluster are less metal rich in their outer parts. We do not find evidence for environmental influence on the gradients, although we note that most of our galaxies are found in the central regions of the cluster. We present the NIR luminosity (LF) and stellar mass functions (SMF) of galaxies in the core of the Shapley supercluster at z=0.048, based on new K-band observations in conjunction with B- and R-band photometry and a subsample of ~650 galaxies spectroscopically confirmed supercluster members, allowing to investigate the galaxies down to M_K^*+6 and M=10^8.75 M_sun. For the 3 deg^2 field the K-band LF is described by a Schechter function with M_K^*=-24.96+-0.10 and \alpha=-1.42+-0.03. We investigate the effect of environment by deriving the LF in three regions selected according to the local galaxy density, and observe a significant increase in the faint-end slope going from the high- (\alpha=-1.33) to the low-density (\alpha=-1.49) environments. The SMF is fitted well by a Schechter function with log_10(M^*)=11.16+-0.04 and \alpha=-1.20+-0.02. The SMF of supercluster galaxies is also characterised by an excess of massive galaxies that are associated to the cluster BCGs. While the value of M* depends on environment the slope of the galaxy SMF does not vary with the environment. By comparing our findings with cosmological simulations, we conclude that the environmental dependences of the LF are not primary due to variations in the merging histories, but to processes which are not treated in the semi-analytical models, such as tidal stripping or harassment. In field regions the SMF shows a sharp upturn below M=10^9 M_sun, close to our mass limit, suggesting that the upturns seen in our K-band LFs, but not in the SMF, are due to this dwarf population. The environmental variations seen in the faint-end of the K-band LF suggests that dwarf galaxies, which are easier to strip than their more massive counterparts, are affected by tidal/gas stripping upon entering the supercluster., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, MNRAS in press, text and figures slightly modified following editor's requirements

We present a study of internal stellar population gradients in early-type cluster galaxies. Using the VLT VIMOS integral field unit, we observed 19 galaxies in the core of the Shapley Supercluster (z = 0.048). The radial trends in nine absorption lines (HdF to Fe5406) were measured to the effective radius for 14 galaxies, from which we derived the gradients in age, total metallicity and alpha-element over-abundance. We combine these with results from 11 galaxies studied in our previous VIMOS work (Rawle et al 2008). We observe a mean metallicity gradient of -0.13 +/- 0.04 per dex and, in common with the findings of previous studies, galaxies with log(sigma) > 2.1 have a sizeable intrinsic scatter in metallicity gradient. The mean log(age/Gyr) gradient is -0.02 +/- 0.06 per dex, although several galaxies have significant positive or negative age gradients. The mean gradient in alpha-element enhancement is -0.10 +/- 0.04 per dex. We find that stellar population gradients are primarily related to the central metallicity: early-type galaxies with super-solar centres have steep negative metallicity gradients and positive age gradients; those with solar metallicity centres have negligible [Z/H] gradients and negative age gradients. There is a strong observed anti-correlation between the gradients in age and metallicity. While a part of this trend can be attributed to the correlation of measurement errors, we demonstrate that there is an underlying intrinsic relation. For the Shapley galaxies, B-R colour gradients predicted from spectroscopic age and metallicity generally agree well with those measured directly from photometry., Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures. We present a fundamental plane (FP) analysis of 141 early-type galaxies in the Shapley supercluster at z=0.049 based on spectroscopy from the AAOmega spectrograph at the AAT and photometry from the WFI on the ESO/MPI 2.2m telescope. The key feature of the survey is its coverage of low-mass galaxies down to sigma_0~50km/s. We obtain a best-fitting FP relation log r_e=1.06 log sigma_0 - 0.82 log < I >_e + cst in the R band. The shallow exponent of sigma_0 is a result of the extension of our sample to low velocity dispersions. We investigate the origin of the intrinsic FP scatter, using estimates of age, metallicity and alpha/Fe. We find that the FP residuals anti-correlate (>3sigma) with the mean stellar age in agreement with previous work. However, a stronger (>4sigma) correlation with alpha/Fe is also found. These correlations indicate that galaxies with effective radii smaller than those predicted by the FP have stellar populations systematically older and with alpha over-abundances larger than average, for their sigma_0. Including alpha/Fe as a fourth parameter in the FP, the total scatter decreases from 0.088 dex to 0.075 dex and the estimated intrinsic scatter decreases from 0.068 dex to 0.049 dex. Thus, variations in alpha/Fe account for >> 30% of the total variance around the FP, and >> 50% of the estimated intrinsic variance. This result indicates that the distribution of galaxies around the FP are tightly related to the enrichment, and hence to the timescale of star-formation. Our results appear to be consistent with the merger hypothesis for the formation of ellipticals which predicts that a significant fraction of the scatter is due to variations in the importance of dissipation in forming merger remnants of a given mass., Comment: MNRAS in press; 16 pages, 14 figures

We present results from a pilot study of radial stellar population trends in early-type galaxies using the VLT VIMOS integral field unit (IFU). We observe twelve galaxies in the cluster Abell 3389 (z~0.027). For each galaxy, we measure 22 line-strength indices in multiple radial bins out to at least the effective radius. We derive stellar population parameters using a grid inversion technique, and calculate the radial gradients in age, metallcity and alpha-abundance. Generally, the galaxies in our sample have flat radial trends in age and [alpha/Fe], but negative gradients in [Z/H] (-0.20 +/- 0.05 dex). Combining our targets with two similar, long-slit studies to increase sample size, we find that the gradients are not correlated with the central velocity dispersion or K-band luminosity (both proxies for galaxy mass). However, we find that the age and metallicity gradients are both anti-correlated with their respective central values (to > 4 sigma), such that galaxies with young cores have steeper positive age gradients, and those with metal-rich centres have strong negative [Z/H] gradients., Comment: 14 pages, 15 figures. The Sloan Digital Sky Survey-II (SDSS-II) has embarked on a multi-year project to identify and measure light curves for intermediate-redshift (0.05 < z < 0.35) Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) using repeated five-band (ugriz) imaging over an area of 300 sq. deg. The survey region is a stripe 2.5 degrees wide centered on the celestial equator in the Southern Galactic Cap that has been imaged numerous times in earlier years, enabling construction of a deep reference image for discovery of new objects. Supernova imaging observations are being acquired between 1 September and 30 November of 2005-7. During the first two seasons, each region was imaged on average every five nights. Spectroscopic follow-up observations to determine supernova type and redshift are carried out on a large number of telescopes. In its first two three-month seasons, the survey has discovered and measured light curves for 327 spectroscopically confirmed SNe Ia, 30 probable SNe Ia, 14 confirmed SNe Ib/c, 32 confirmed SNe II, plus a large number of photometrically identified SNe Ia, 94 of which have host-galaxy spectra taken so far. A detailed dynamical analysis of the nearby rich Norma cluster (ACO 3627) is presented. From radial velocities of 296 cluster members, we find a mean velocity of 4871 +/- 54 km/s and a velocity dispersion of 925 km/s. The mean velocity of the E/S0 population (4979 +/- 85 km/s) is offset with respect to that of the S/Irr population (4812 +/- 70 km/s) by `Delta' v = 164 km/s in the cluster rest frame. This offset increases towards the core of the cluster. The E/S0 population is free of any detectable substructure and appears relaxed. Its shape is clearly elongated with a position angle that is aligned along the dominant large-scale structures in this region, the so-called Norma wall. The central cD galaxy has a very large peculiar velocity of 561 km/s which is most probably related to an ongoing merger at the core of the cluster. The spiral/irregular galaxies reveal a large amount of substructure; two dynamically distinct subgroups within the overall spiral-population have been identified, located along the Norma wall elongation. The dynamical mass of the Norma cluster within its Abell radius is 1 - 1.1 x 10^15 h^-1_73 M_Sun. One of the cluster members, the spiral galaxy WKK 6176 which recently was observed to have a 70 kpc X-ray tail, reveals numerous striking low-brightness filaments pointing away from the cluster centre suggesting strong interaction with the intracluster medium., Comment: Sumbitted to MNRAS. 13 pages, 11 figures. We present optical and infrared observations of the unusual Type Ia supernova (SN) 2004eo. The light curves and spectra closely resemble those of the prototypical SN 1992A, and the luminosity at maximum (M_B = -19.08) is close to the average for a SN Ia. However, the ejected 56Ni mass derived by modelling the bolometric light curve (about 0.45 solar masses) lies near the lower limit of the 56Ni mass distribution observed in normal SNe Ia. Accordingly, SN 2004eo shows a relatively rapid post-maximum decline in the light curve (Delta m_(B) = 1.46), small expansion velocities in the ejecta, and a depth ratio Si II 5972 / Si II 6355 similar to that of SN 1992A. The physical properties of SN 2004eo cause it to fall very close to the boundary between the faint, low velocity gradient, and high velocity gradient subgroups proposed by Benetti et al. (2005). Similar behaviour is seen in a few other SNe Ia. Thus, there may in fact exist a few SNe Ia with intermediate physical properties., Comment: 28 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

To further our understanding of the Great Attractor (GA), we have undertaken a redshift survey using the 2dF on the AAT. Clusters and filaments in the GA region were targeted with 25 separate pointings resulting in approximately 2600 new redshifts. Targets included poorly studied X-ray clusters from the CIZA catalogue as well as the Cen-Crux and PKS 1343-601 clusters, both of which lie close to the classic GA centre. For nine clusters in the region, we report velocity distributions as well as virial and projected mass estimates. The virial mass of CIZA J1324.7-5736, now identified as a separate structure from the Cen-Crux cluster, is found to be ~3x10^14 M_sun, in good agreement with the X-ray inferred mass. In the PKS 1343-601 field, five redshifts are measured of which four are new. An analysis of redshifts from this survey, in combination with those from the literature, reveals the dominant structure in the GA region to be a large filament, which appears to extend from Abell S0639 (l=281\deg, b=+11\deg) to (l~5\deg, b~-50\deg), encompassing the Cen-Crux, CIZA J1324.7-5736, Norma and Pavo II clusters. Behind the Norma Cluster at cz~15000 km/s, the masses of four rich clusters are calculated. These clusters (Triangulum-Australis, Ara, CIZA J1514.6-4558 and CIZA J1410.4-4246) may contribute to a continued large-scale flow beyond the GA. Deep J, H and Ks photometry of the low Galactic latitude Norma cluster has been obtained with the 1.4-m Infrared Survey Facility (IRSF) and with SOFI on the NTT. Together with spectroscopy taken at the Anglo-Australian Observatory using 2dF, the near-infrared Fundamental Plane of the Norma cluster will be used to determine the distance to this cluster and to assess its location within the Great Attractor overdensity. Potential systematic uncertainties related to the determination of peculiar velocities in the Zone of Avoidance are discussed in some detail. In particular the effects (uncertainties, systematics and scatter) of extinction and star-crowding on the derived magnitudes at low latitudes are investigated in great detail. We present a first look at the emerging Ks-band Fundamental Plane of the Norma cluster. We compare the measured peculiar velocities of 98 local (<150/h Mpc) type Ia supernovae with predictions derived from the PSCz survey. There is excellent agreement between the two datasets with a best fit beta_I (=Omega_m^0.6/b_I) of 0.55+-0.06. Subsets of the supernovae dataset are further analysed and the above result is found to be robust with respect to culls by distance, host-galaxy extinction and to the choice of reference frame in which the analysis is carried out. Alternative methods of determining beta_I including density-density comparisons, dipole measurements and WMAP-based results are also discussed. We report the results of a high quality spectral study of early-type galaxies within the Coma Cluster core. Stellar population analysis using Lick/IDS indices to break the age/metallicity degeneracy are presented, probing their formation history and properties. We present new spectroscopic and photometric data for 137 early-type galaxies in nine clusters, and for a set of nearby standard galaxies. The clusters studied are Perseus (A0426), Pisces, A0262, A0347, J8, HMS0122+3305, 7S21, A2199 and A2634. Our spectroscopic data comprise radial velocities (cz), central velocity dispersions (sigma) and magnesium line strength indices (Mg). Internal errors (derived from repeat observations) are 7.6% on each measurement of sigma, and 0.010 mag on each Mg measurement. We correct the major published datasets to a standard aperture size, and define a new `standard system' by the aperture-corrected Lick data of Davies et al. Through extensive intercomparisons with data from the literature, we present the corrections required to bring the major published datasets onto the standard system. We demonstrate that our new velocity dispersion data can be brought into consistency with the standard system, to an uncertainty of <0.01 dex. From R-band CCD photometry, we derive effective diameter (A_e), mean surface brightness within effective diameter (mu_e) and an R-band diameter equivalent to the D_n parameter of Dressler et al. Internal comparisons indicate an average error of 0.005 in each measurement of log(D_n). The combination log(A_e) - 0.3 mu_e, approximately the quantity used in the Fundamental Plane distance indicator, has an uncertainty of 0.006 per measurement. The photometric data can be brought onto a system consistent with external data at the level of 0.5% in distance. We have measured the mean peculiar motions of 103 early-type galaxies in 7 clusters in the Perseus-Pisces (PP) ridge or PP background, and a further 249 such galaxies in 9 calibrating clusters from the literature, using the inverse Fundamental Plane relation. This relation is found to have a distance error of 20% per galaxy. None of the 6 clusters in the PP ridge has a significant motion with respect to the CMB frame, but the PP background cluster J8 shows marginal evidence of `backside infall' into the PP supercluster. The full 16 cluster sample has a mean CMB-frame bulk motion of 420 +/- 280 km/s, towards l=262, b=-25. This result is consistent both with no bulk motion in the CMB frame and with the ~350 km/s bulk motion found by Courteau et al. It is inconsistent at the 98% confidence level with the ~700 km/s bulk flow found by Lauer & Postman (LP). The PP ridge clusters are found to have a small and statistically insignificant mean radial motion with respect to the CMB frame: -60 +/- 220 km/s. A comparison between our cluster peculiar velocities and the predicted peculiar velocities from the IRAS 1.2 Jy density field, smoothed on a 500 km/s scale, yields beta_I = Omega^0.6/b_I = 0.95 +/- 0.48, consistent with previous results. We find agreement between our peculiar motions and published Tully-Fisher results for the same clusters. The disagreement between the 11 clusters common to our sample and that of LP, based on BCGs, is statistically significant at the >~ 99.7% confidence level indicating that the errors of one or both of these data sets are underestimated. When the BCG distances corrected for the X-ray luminosity of the host cluster are used, the disagreement is reduced to the ~94% confidence level. (Abridged), Comment: MNRAS, in press. 19 pages. We present results of a new study of peculiar motions of 7 clusters in the Perseus-Pisces (PP) region, using the Fundamental Plane as a distance indicator. The sample is calibrated by reference to 9 additional clusters with data from the literature. Careful attention is paid to the matching of spectroscopic and photometric data from several sources. For six clusters in the PP supercluster no significant peculiar motions are detected. For these clusters we derive a bulk motion of 60 +/- 220 km/s, in the CMB frame, directed towards the Local Group. This non-detection is in marginal conflict with previous Tully-Fisher studies. Two clusters in the background of the supercluster exhibit significant negative peculiar velocities, characteristic of backside infall into PP. A bulk-flow fit to all 16 clusters reveals a statistically insignificant motion of 430 +/- 280 km/s towards l=265, b=26 (CMB frame). Comparison with the velocity field predicted from the IRAS 1.2Jy survey yields \beta = 1.0 +/- 0.5.
