The increasing energy demand and the ever more pressing need for clean technologies of energy conversion pose one of the most urgent and complicated issues of our age. Thermoelectricity, namely the direct conversion of waste heat into electricity, is a promising technique based on a long-standing physical phenomenon, which still has not fully developed its potential, mainly due to the low efficiency of the process. In order to improve the thermoelectric performance, a huge effort is being made by physicists, materials scientists and engineers, with the primary aims of better understanding the fundamental issues ruling the improvement of the thermoelectric figure of merit, and finally building the most efficient thermoelectric devices. In this Roadmap an overview is given about the most recent experimental and computational results obtained within the Italian research community on the optimization of composition and morphology of some thermoelectric materials, as well as on the design of thermoelectric and hybrid thermoelectric/photovoltaic devices.

Second sound is known as the thermal transport regime occurring in a wave-like fashion, usually identified in a limited number of materials only at cryogenic temperatures. Here we show that second sound in a μm-long carbon chain (cumulene) might occur even at room temperature. To this aim, we calibrate a many-body force field on the first principles calculated phonon dispersion relations of cumulene and, through molecular dynamics, we mimic laser-induced transient thermal grating experiments. We provide evidence that by tuning temperature as well as the space modulation of its initial profile we can reversibly drive the system from a wave-like to a diffusive-like thermal transport. By following three different theoretical methodologies (molecular dynamics, the Maxwell-Cattaneo-Vernotte equation, and heat transport microscopic theory) we estimate for cumulene a second sound velocity in the range of 2.4-3.2 km s-1.

Non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations have been applied to study thermal transport properties, such as thermal conductivity and rectification, in nanoporous Si membranes. Cylindrical pores have been generated in crystalline Si membranes with different configurations, including step-like, ordered and random pore distributions. The effect of interface and overall porosity on thermal transport properties has been investigated as well as the impact of the porosity profile on the direction of the heat current. The lowest thermal conductivity and highest thermal rectification for equal porosity have been found for a step-like pore distribution. Increasing interface porosity resulted in an increase of thermal rectification, which has been found to be systematically higher for random pore distribution with respect to an ordered one. Furthermore, a maximum in rectification of 5.5% has been found for a specific overall porosity (

By combining electron microscopy measurements, atomistic simulations and elastic homogenization theory, we theoretically investigate the Young’s modulus of nanoporous Au structures. Based on atomistic replicas generated starting from experimental tomographic evidence, atomistic simulations reveal that nanoporous Au stiffens as ligaments become finer, reproducing experimental findings obtained by nanoindentation of dealloyed samples. We argue that such a stiffening is neither due to surface stress nor to grain boundaries. Instead, we observe a direct quantitative correlation between the density of dislocations found in the material phase of the nanoporous structures and their Young’s modulus and we propose a microscopic explanation of the observed stiffening. In particular, we show that local stress and strain fields in the neighborhood of dislocation cores allow dislocations to work as reinforcing solutes.

Cluster-assembled metallic films show interesting electrical properties, both in the near-to-percolation regime, when deposited clusters do not form a complete layer yet, and when the film thickness is well above the electrical percolation threshold. Correctly estimating their electrical conductivity is crucial, but, particularly for the latter regime, standard theoretical tools are not quite adequate. We therefore developed a procedure based on an atomically informed mesoscopic model in which ab-initio estimates of electronic transport at the nanoscale are used to reconstruct the conductivity of nanogranular gold films generated by molecular dynamics. An equivalent resistor network is developed, appropriately accounting for ballistic transport. The method is shown to correctly capture the non-monotonic behavior of the conductivity as a function of the film thickness, namely a signature feature of nanogranular films.

Infrared pump-probe spectroscopy provides detailed information about the dynamics of hydrogen-bonded liquids. Due to dissipation of the absorbed pump pulse energy, thermal equilibration dynamics also contributes to the observed signal. Disentangling this contribution from the molecular response remains a challenge. By performing non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations of liquid-deuterated methanol, we show that faster molecular vibrational relaxation and slower heat diffusion are decoupled and occur on different length scales. Transient structures of the hydrogen bonding network influence thermal relaxation by affecting thermal diffusivity over a length scale of several nanometers.

Second sound is known as the thermal transport regime where heat is carried by temperature waves. Its experimental observation was previously restricted to a small number of materials, usually in rather narrow temperature windows. We show that it is possible to overcome these limitations by driving the system with a rapidly varying temperature field. High-frequency second sound is demonstrated in bulk natural Ge between 7 K and room temperature by studying the phase lag of the thermal response under a harmonic high-frequency external thermal excitation and addressing the relaxation time and the propagation velocity of the heat waves. A systematic study based on state-of-the-art first-principles calculations has been carried out to determine intrinsic thermoelectric properties in $n$- and $p$-type SiGe alloys. Both electronic and thermal transport coefficients have been evaluated using the Boltzmann transport equation, applied on the electronic and phonon band structure, respectively. The Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity, and thermal conductivity have been analyzed focusing on the effect of carrier concentration, temperature, and alloy composition. The resulting figure of merit is highest for heavy doping and at elevated temperatures ($g$1000 K) in the SiGe alloy with Ge content from 50% to 80%.

In this work we study the effect of different synthetic conditions on thermal transport properties of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) by focusing in particular on the role of proton scavengers. To this aim, different PEDOT samples were generated in silico using a novel computational algorithm based on a combination of first-principles density functional theory and classical molecular dynamics simulations. The corresponding thermal conductivities were then estimated using the approach to equilibrium molecular dynamics methodology. The results show that the initial synthetic conditions strongly affect the corresponding thermal conductivities, which display variations up to a factor of $\ensuremath{\sim}2$ depending on the proton scavenger. By decomposing the thermal conductivity tensor along the direction of maximum chain alignment and the corresponding perpendicular directions, we attribute the thermal conductivity differences to the variations in the average polymer chain length ${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{\mathrm{ave}}$. A dependence of the thermal conductivity with the polydispersity index was finally observed, suggesting a possible role of intercrystallite chains in enhancing thermal transport properties. By means of the Green-Kubo modal analysis, we eventually characterize the vibrational modes involved in PEDOT thermal transport and investigate how they are related to the thermal conductivity values of the samples.

The synthesis of wafer-scale two-dimensional amorphous carbon monolayers has been recently demonstrated. This material presents useful properties when integrated as coating of metals, semiconductors or magnetic materials, such as enabling efficient atomic layer deposition and hence fostering the development of ultracompact technologies. Here we propose a characterization of how the structural degree of amorphousness of such carbon membranes could be controlled by the crystal growth temperature. We also identify how energy is dissipated in this material by a systematic analysis of emerging vibrational modes whose localization increases with the loss of spatial symmetries, resulting in a tunable thermal conductivity varying by more than two orders of magnitude. Networks based on nanoscale resistive switching junctions are considered promising for the fabrication of neuromorphic computing architectures. To date random networks of nanowires, nanoparticles, and metal clusters embedded in a polymeric matrix or passivated by shell of ligands or oxide layers have been used to produce resistive switching systems. The strategies applied to tailor resistive switching behavior are currently based on the careful control of the volume fraction of the nanoscale conducting phase that must be fixed close to the electrical percolation threshold. Here, by blending laboratory and computer experiments, we demonstrate that metallic nanostructured Au films fabricated by bare gold nanoparticles produced in the gas phase and with thickness well beyond the electrical percolation threshold, show a non-ohmic electrical behavior and complex and reproducible resistive switching. We observe that the nanogranular structure of the Au films does not evolve with thickness: this introduces a huge number of defects and junctions affecting the electrical transport and causing a dynamic evolution of the nanoscale electrical contacts under the current flow. To uncover the origin of the resistive switching behavior in Au cluster-assembled films, we developed a simple computational model for determining the evolution of a model granular film under bias conditions. The model exploits the information provided by experimental investigation about the nanoscale granular morphology of real films. Our results show that metallic nanogranular materials have functional properties radically different from their bulk counterparts, in particular nanostructured Au films can be fabricated by assembling bare gold clusters which retain their individuality to produce an all-metal resistive switching system.

We report a record low thermal conductivity in polycrystalline MoS obtained for ultrathin films with varying grain sizes and orientations. By optimizing the sulfurization parameters of nanometer-thick Mo layers, five MoS films containing a combination of horizontally and vertically oriented grains, with respect to the bulk (001) monocrystal, were grown. From transmission electron microscopy, the average grain size, typically below 10 nm, and proportion of differently oriented grains were extracted. The thermal conductivity of the suspended samples was extracted from a Raman laser-power-dependent study, and the lowest value of thermal conductivity of 0.27 W m K, which reaches a similar value as that of Teflon, is obtained in a polycrystalline sample formed by a combination of horizontally and vertically oriented grains in similar proportion. Analysis by means of molecular dynamics and finite element method simulations confirm that such a grain arrangement leads to lower grain boundary conductance. We discuss the possible use of these thermal insulating films in the context of electronics and thermoelectricity.

I describe a set of computational experiments using molecular dynamics simulations, showing that the interface between two solid materials can be described as an autonomous thermodynamical system. By making use of the Gibbs description for such an interface, I discuss a robust nonequilibrium thermodynamics theoretical framework providing information about its corresponding thermal boundary resistance. In particular, I show that the termal resistance of a junction between two pure solid materials can be regarded as an interface property, depending solely on the interface temperature.

The organic/inorganic interface in thin nanosized porous structures has a key role in determining the final properties of the composite materials. By use of the porous silicon/eumelanin hybrids as a case study, the role of this interface was investigated by experimental and computational methods. Our results show that an increased polymer density close to the hybrid interface strongly modifies the diffusion of the chemical species within the polymer molecule, affecting then the oxidation level of the pores' inner Si surface. We observed a greater stability induced by increased pore diameter, a behavior that with computational and chemical arguments we attributed to a modified diffusion of the hydrogen peroxide toward the Si/eumelanin interface. Our results show that the overall behavior of a polymer when inserted in a tiny nanoscale structure must be taken into account for a correct understanding and control of the hybrids properties and that the formation of the interface alone may not be sufficient. © 2018 American Chemical Society.
