Graphene has emerged as a promising additive for improving the corrosion resistance of organic coatings due to its planar structure and low permeability. Multiple publications have reported positive results, primarily because of its barrier qualities. However, the incorporation of graphene into commercial coatings has not been studied in great detail, as the limited availability of commercial‐grade graphene has hindered its widespread use. This study investigates the addition of a commercially available graphene additive to a commercial primer, using industry‐standard corrosion tests and advanced characterization techniques to evaluate the coating's performance. The results show that while the addition does improve the barrier properties of the coating, as shown in salt spray tests, it also reduces its functionality due to factors such as oxygen reduction on graphene and accelerated diffusion pathways. Overall, the cost of incorporating graphene may outweigh the limited benefits observed in this study. These findings underscore the need for further research to explore the potential of graphene and the importance of utilizing multiple testing methods for performance evaluation. Hydrogen diffusivity and trapping have been studied in two advanced high strength steel grades and model samples using electrochemical permeation test. Microstructures of CP1000 and DP1000 steels consist of ferrite, martensite and a small fraction of retained austenite. In addition, bainite is present in CP1000. Model phases with predominance of a particular phase have been prepared by specific heat treatment. DP1000 has shown the lowest diffusivity among all materials, while ferritic model sample has shown the highest. Differences in hydrogen diffusion coefficient values are linked to trapping microstructural characteristics and grain size. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT Zr‐based conversion coatings represent an environmentally conscious alternative to traditional phosphating and chromating in the automotive industry. In this study, we employ XPS and LEIS to investigate the formation of Zr‐conversion layers on Zn–Mg–Al alloy after alkaline and acidic model pretreatments. On alkaline pretreated surfaces, a Zr‐oxide/oxyfluoride layer and an underlying Mg–Al–fluoride layer are formed, whereas acidic pretreatment results in only an oxidic layer. The thickness of the Zr‐layer depends on pretreatment pH and immersion time. Acidic treatment achieves an approximately 23 nm‐thick Zr‐oxide/oxyfluoride layer after 1 min, while prolonged treatment increases the thickness of the oxidic layer for strong alkaline and acidic conditions. Mild alkaline pretreatments, however, do not benefit from extended immersion. F‐induced corrosion pits are observed after mild alkaline treatment. The strong alkaline pretreatment proved to be the most efficient in creating a double‐layered Zr‐conversion coating with increased oxidic layer thickness over time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hydrogen absorption into steel during atmospheric corrosion has been of a strong concern during last decades. It is technically important to investigate if hydrogen absorbed under atmospheric exposure conditions can significantly affect mechanical properties of steels. The present work studies changes of mechanical properties of dual phase (DP) advanced high strength steel specimens with sodium chloride deposits during corrosion in humid air using Slow Strain Rate Test (SSRT). Additional annealed specimens were used as reference in order to separate the possible effect of absorbed hydrogen from that of corrosion deterioration. Hydrogen entry was monitored in parallel experiments using hydrogen electric resistance sensor (HERS) and thermal desorption mass spectrometry (TDMS). SSRT results showed a drop in elongation and tensile strength by 42% and 6%, respectively, in 27 days of atmospheric exposure. However, this decrease cannot be attributed to the effect of absorbed hydrogen despite the increase in hydrogen content with time of exposure. Cross-cut analysis revealed considerable pitting, which was suggested to be the main reason for the degradation of mechanical properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
