Penicillium expansum is the most popular post-harvest pathogen and causes blue mold disease in pome fruit and leads to significant economic losses worldwide every year. However, the fundamental regulation mechanisms of growth in P. expansum are unclear. Recently, non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) have attracted more attention due to critical roles in normalizing gene expression and maintaining cellular genotypes in organisms. However, the research related to ncRNAs in P. expansum have not been reported. Therefore, to provide an overview of ncRNAs on composition, distribution, expression changes, and potential targets in the growth process, a comparative transcriptomic analysis was performed on spores and mycelia of P. expansum in the present study. A total of 2595 novel mRNAs, 3362 long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), 10 novel microRNAs (miRNAs), 86 novel small interfering RNAs (siRNAs), and 11,238 circular RNAs (circRNAs) were predicted and quantified. Of these, 1482 novel mRNAs, 5987 known mRNAs, 2047 lncRNAs, 40 miRNAs, 38 novel siRNAs, and 9235 circRNAs were differentially expressed (DE) in response to the different development stages. Afterward, the involved functions and pathways of DE RNAs were revealed via Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) database enrichment analysis. The interaction networks between mRNAs, lncRNAs, and miRNAs were also predicted based on their correlation coefficient of expression profiles. Among them, it was found that miR168 family members may play important roles in fungal growth due to their central location in the network. These findings will contribute to a better understanding on regulation machinery at the RNA level on fungal growth and provide a theoretical basis to develop novel control strategies against P. expansum.

Natural language sampling (NLS) is a common methodology in research and clinical practice used to evaluate a child's spontaneous spoken language in a naturalistic context. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition that results in heterogeneous language profiles. NLS has emerged as a useful method for better understanding language use and development in this population. Prior work has examined the effects that contexts (e.g., home, lab) and conversational partners (e.g., examiner, parent) have on childrens language production, but less is known about remote collection of interactions between parents and children with ASD at home. Increasing our understanding of in-home remote NLS with children with ASD will improve naturalistic approaches to language assessment in children with ASD. We analyzed natural language samples of 90 dyads of parents and four- to seven-year old children with ASD collected remotely in the home using items and activities from the family's own home. The 15-min parent-child interactions were transcribed and analyzed for the child's language level measured by the number of different words. We examined the range of activities and the relationship between activities and the child's language level. We found that in-home parent-child activities fell into 13 descriptive categories, but we found no significant difference in child's language level (measured by the mean number of different words) across activities. We found that dyads involving children with higher language levels engaged in significantly fewer different activities compared to children with lower language levels. We found no difference in the number of different words elicited in the five most frequent activities in our sample. These results support the feasibility of remote in-home language sampling. While the types of activities that parent-child dyads engaged in did not affect the richness of language elicited, the number of different activities was associated with the child's language level. Allowing parents to steer children with lower language levels toward more different activities may allow children with lower language to more fully demonstrate their spoken language abilities.

Background: Living in areas with higher levels of ambient air pollution has been associated with a higher incidence of ischemic stroke and all-cause mortality but less is known about the relationship between traffic-related pollution and long-term survival after stroke., Methods: We identified consecutive patients admitted to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center with ischemic stroke between 1999 and 2008 and determined the distance to the nearest roadway with an average daily traffic count of more than 10,000 vehicles/day. Categories of residential proximity were defined as 100 m or less, 100-200 m, 200-400 m or less, or more than 400 m from a busy roadway. We identified deaths through June 2012 using the Social Security Death Index and used Cox proportional hazards models adjusted for medical history and socioeconomic factors to calculate hazard ratios for the association between residential proximity to a high-traffic roadway and all-cause mortality., Results: Among 1683 stroke patients with complete data, there were 950 deaths (median follow-up=4.6 years). We observed higher poststroke mortality among people living closer to high-traffic roadways. Patients living 100 m or less from high-traffic roadways had a 20% (95% confidence interval: 1%, 43%) higher rate of poststroke mortality than patients living more than 400 m away (P trend=.02)., Conclusions: In this study, living close to a high-traffic roadway was associated with an elevated mortality rate. This relationship remained statistically significant after adjustment for individual- and neighborhood-level factors, providing evidence that traffic-related pollution is associated with a higher mortality rate among stroke survivors., (Copyright © 2013 National Stroke Association. Background: Living near major roadways has been associated with increased risk of cardiovascular events, but little is known about its impact on renal function., Methods: We calculated the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) for 1103 consecutive Boston-area patients hospitalised with confirmed acute ischaemic stroke between 1999 and 2004. We used linear regression to evaluate the association between eGFR and categories of residential distance to major roadway (0 to ≤50, >50 to ≤100, >100 to ≤200, >200 to ≤400, >400 to ≤1000 and >1000 m) adjusting for age, sex, race, smoking, comorbid conditions, treatment with ACE inhibitor and neighbourhood-level socioeconomic characteristics. In a second analysis, we considered the log of distance to major roadway as a continuous variable., Results: Patients living closer to a major roadway had lower eGFR than patients living farther away (Ptrend=0.01). Comparing patients living 50 m versus 1000 m from a major roadway was associated with a 3.9 ml/min/1.73 m(2) lower eGFR (95% CI 1.0 to 6.7; p=0.007): a difference comparable in magnitude to the reduction in eGFR observed for a 4-year increase in age in population-based studies. The magnitude of this association did not differ significantly across categories of age, sex, race, history of hypertension, diabetes or socioeconomic status., Conclusions: Living near a major roadway is associated with lower eGFR in a cohort of patients presenting with acute ischaemic stroke. If causal, these results imply that exposures associated with living near a major roadway contribute to reduced renal function, an important risk factor for cardiovascular events.

Obesity in adolescents is continuing to rise at an alarming rate and is becoming an important public health problem in Taiwan. Therefore, the aims of this study were (1) to evaluate the effectiveness of a Weight-loss E-learning Program (WEP) on obese Chinese adolescents and (2) to gauge this group's satisfaction with the WEP. The design was quasi-experimental, using purposive samples from two junior high schools in Taipei, Taiwan. Obese adolescents between 12 and 14 years of age with body mass indexes (BMI) over 25 kg/m2 were recruited. A 14-week WEP was developed to expedite weight loss for the selected adolescents. Data such as BMI, waist-to-hip ratio, waist circumference, hip circumference, mid-arm circumference, triceps skinfold, blood pressure, and physical fitness were collected through standardized instruments and methods before and after the WEP. The satisfaction of the subjects and four psychosocial variables were evaluated and taken into account by authoritative scales and questionnaires. In total, 37 adolescents participated in this study. After the WEP, we found significant decreases in BMI (p < 0.05), waist circumference (p < 0.05), and triceps skinfold (p < 0.001) in the sample population. Improvements were found in three of four tests of physical fitness (p < 0.001, p < 0.05, and p < 0.01, respectively). All psychosocial variables showed significant favorable changes (p < 0.01 for self-esteem scores, p < 0.001 for the other three variables) and satisfaction levels for the WEP ranged from 56.6% to 83.8% in four different criteria. The WEP was effective in helping obese Chinese adolescents lose weight. However, there is still room for improvement.
