Abstract

Superconductivity has been realized in films of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$NiO$_2$. Here we report synthesis and characterization of polycrystalline samples of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$NiO$_3$ and La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$NiO$_2$ ($0\le x\le 0.2$). Magnetization and resistivity measurements reveal that La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$NiO$_3$ are paramagnetic metals and La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$NiO$_2$ exhibit insulating behavior. Superconductivity is not detected in bulk samples of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$NiO$_2$. The absence of superconductivity in bulk La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$NiO$_2$ may be due to the generation of hydroxide during reduction or a small amount of nickel impurities. Abstract

Quantum communications enable the transmission of information in a secure way that is ensured by the laws of quantum physics. Current quantum-safe communication systems are based on quantum key distribution (QKD) technology at their core. In the most recent years, a remarkable effort has been put into practical implementations of QKD with a focus on their integration into classical optical networks, some of which are becoming commercially available. However, even with the ongoing development of QKD systems, there are efforts toward their miniaturization, power efficiency improvement, and enhancement of their flexibility and functionality.In this paper, we outline major QKD protocols and review recent advances in QKD systems based on photonic integrated circuits. Finally, we will discuss the potential feasibility of multi-protocol QKD chips leveraging the advantages of different protocols in one solution.

15. Lack of HIV Testing and Awareness of HIV Infection among Men Who Have Sex with Men, Beijing, China

Abstract

In China, men who have sex with men (MSM) are at high risk for HIV. However, little is known about their HIV testing behavior. From September 2001 to January 2002, we recruited 482 men through social networks and MSM venues. We conducted HIV testing and counseling, and anonymous, standardized face-to-face interviews. Eighty-two percent of participants had never tested for HIV before the study. The most common reasons for not testing were perceived low risk of HIV infection (72%), not knowing the location of test sites (56%), fear of positive test results (54%), fear of people learning about his homosexuality (47%), and fear of breach of confidentiality about test results (47%). We identified five statistically significant independent correlates of having been tested for HIV: being older, having a college degree, being more "out" (disclosing MSM activities to people), being recruited through social networks, and having a lifetime history of sexually transmitted diseases. Of 15 participants (3.1%) who tested positive for HIV in our study, 14 (93%) did not know their status before being tested in the study. The prevalence of HIV testing among MSM in Beijing is low; almost all HIV-positive men in our study were unaware of their infection. Our findings suggest an urgent need to promote HIV testing among MSM in Beijing.

The study included women ≤50 years of age with an IUD insertion. Site-specific algorithms using structured and unstructured data were developed and a sample validated by EHR review. Positive predictive values (PPVs) of the algorithms were calculated. Breastfeeding status was assessed in a random sample of 125 women at each research site with IUD placement within 52 weeks postpartum.Results: The study population included 282,028 women with 325,582 IUD insertions. The PPVs for uterine perforation were KPNC 77%, KPSC 81%, KPWA 82%, and RI 47%; PPVs for IUD expulsion were KPNC 77%, KPSC 87%, KPWA 68%, and RI 37%. Across all research sites, breastfeeding status at the time of IUD insertion was determined for 94% of those sampled.Conclusions: Algorithms with a high PPV for uterine perforation and IUD expulsion were developed at 3 of the 4 research sites. Breastfeeding status at the time of IUD insertion could be determined at all research sites. Our findings suggest that a study to evaluate the associations of breastfeeding and postpartum IUD insertions with risk of uterine perforation and IUD expulsion can be successfully conducted retrospectively; however, automated application of algorithms must be supplemented with chart review for some outcomes at one research site due to low PPV.Keywords: electronic health records, intrauterine device, breastfeeding, validation study, algorithm, postpartum

Abstract

Background/Objective: Since January 2020, there have been over 3 million individuals infected with the coronavirus in the United States, quickly spreading across at least 171 countries. The severity and morbidity of patients with COVID-19 are significantly increased when comorbidities, such as Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), are present. Because the main target of SARS-CoV-2 is ACE2, patients with CKD may be a more vulnerable population. The goal of this study was to determine if COVID-19 positive patients with CKD had increased mortality, inpatient admission, and ED visitation rates compared to those without CKD. Methods: This retrospective chart review includes patients from over 100 separate healthcare entities who were diagnosed with COVID-19 between January 1, 2020 and July 13, 2020 and are over the age of 18. The subjects were first separated into those diagnosed with CKD and those without, basic descriptive calculations were computed, and a Chi Square test was used to analyze outcomes. Results: The CKD COVID-19 positive population was compromised of 47.5% men and 52.5% women while the non-CKD control group was made up of 45.4 % men, 54.1% women, and 0.5% other. The median Charlson index for the CKD and non-CKD population was 4 and 1, respectively. Abstract

To evaluate an online disease management system supporting patients with uncontrolled type 2 diabetes.Engaging and Motivating Patients Online With Enhanced Resources for Diabetes was a 12-month parallel randomized controlled trial of 415 patients with type 2 diabetes with baseline glycosylated hemoglobin (A1C) values ≥7.5% from primary care sites sharing an electronic health record. The intervention included: (1) wirelessly uploaded home glucometer readings with graphical feedback; (2) comprehensive patient-specific diabetes summary status report; (3) nutrition and exercise logs; (4) insulin record; (5) online messaging with the patient's health team; (6) nurse care manager and dietitian providing advice and medication management; and (7) personalized text and video educational 'nuggets' dispensed electronically by the care team. A1C was the primary outcome variable.Compared with usual care (UC, n=189), patients in the intervention (INT, n=193) group had significantly reduced A1C at 6 months (-1.32% INT vs -0.66% UC; p0.001). At 12 months, the differences were not significant (-1.14% INT vs -0.95% UC; p=0.133). In post hoc analysis, significantly more INT patients had improved diabetes control (0.5% reduction in A1C) than UC patients at 12 months (69.9 (95% CI 63.2 to 76.5) vs 55.4 (95% CI 48.4 to 62.5); p=0.006).A nurse-led, multidisciplinary health team can manage a population of diabetic patients in an online disease management program. INT patients achieved greater decreases in A1C at 6 months than UC patients, but the differences were not sustained at 12 months. Comment s'articulent ces deux images de la Chine ? La prise en compte simultanée de ces deux réalités opposées dans une approche plus théorique aboutit à redéfinir les notions de transition, frontière, d'acteur et de responsabilité en matière de réchauffement climatique.

Abstract

A 57-year-old woman was admitted with a 3-month history of diplopia and exophthalmos in the right eye. Plain skull X-P and axial CT demonstrated two bony tumors. One involved her right orbit, frontal sinus and ethmoidal sinus, and the other was located in the left occipital bone. The right intraorbital tumor was removed almost totally via the superomedial orbital approach by means of microsurgical drilling. Histopathological examination revealed mature osteoma. The microsurgical drilling procedure was helpful in obtaining an optimal result from surgical treatment of the orbital osteoma.

Abstract

The extracellular matrix (ECM) is a complex meshwork of cross-linked proteins providing both biophysical and biochemical cues that are important regulators of cell proliferation, survival, differentiation, and migration. We present here a proteomic strategy developed to characterize the in vivo ECM composition of normal tissues and tumors using enrichment of protein extracts for ECM components and subsequent analysis by mass spectrometry. In parallel, we have developed a bioinformatic approach to predict the in silico “matrisome” defined as the ensemble of ECM proteins and associated factors. We report the characterization of the extracellular matrices of murine lung and colon, each comprising more than 100 ECM proteins and each presenting a characteristic signature. Moreover, using human tumor xenografts in mice, we show that both tumor cells and stromal cells contribute to the production of the tumor matrix and that tumors of differing metastatic potential differ in both the tumor- and the stroma-derived ECM components. The strategy we describe and illustrate here can be broadly applied and, to facilitate application of these methods by others, we provide resources including laboratory protocols, inventories of ECM domains and proteins, and instructions for bioinformatically deriving the human and mouse matrisome., National Cancer Institute (U.S.) (U54 CA126515)

Abstract

In recent years, the development of high speed microcomputers makes it possible to apply optimal control theory to the missile guidance system. Although, numerous research papers have been published on this subject, hardly any of them deal with the concept of central guidance control. Here, an optimal central guidance principle that satisfies the needs of missiles with various speeds and guiding time is proposed. The major purpose of central guidance control is to guide the missile and enable it to maintain an optimal geometric position in relation to its target as soon as the target is locked on to by the missile head guidance. In order to reach the necessary maximum gravity force, the missile must have a certain minimum velocity which is contingent upon target's maximum gravity force, height and distance between them. For distant and low altitude targets the major factor is missile' speed. It's better to use a central guidance that can maximize the residual speed of the missile. For closer targets, the timing is very important, since the missile has to destroy the target before it launches a counter attack. Therefore, central guidance control that can minimize the intercepting time has to be applied. By solving the boundary value of nonlinear equations, these guidance rules can be obtained. Here, we will introduce the mathematical model of medium range air to air missiles, and discuss guidance principles of self searching. Abstract

Bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) microspheres with different surface morphology were hydrothermally synthesised at different pH value. The resulting sample was characterised by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron micrographs, transmission electron microscopy, N2adsorption and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. On the basis of characterisation results, we found that the pH value exhibits a great influence on the surface morphology and photocatalytic activity of the BiVO4microspheres. The acid condition may play a more important role on the sample morphology compared with alkaline condition. BiVO43D architectures prepared at pH = 5 composed of many random grown nanosheets show an excellent photocatalytic activity. Thanks to the 3D architectures and narrow bandgap, the photocatalytic performance was significantly improved as compared with the other BiVO4microspheres. Several possible reasons for the higher photocatalytic activity have been taken into consideration, namely, the unique features of high surface area, quantum-size effect and high surface-to-volume ratios of nanosheets. Abstract

We compared the pharmacokinetics of liposome-encapsulated tritiated 5-fluorouracil (3H-5FU-Lipo) to 3H-5FU in buffered saline (3H-5FU-PBS) after subconjunctival or intravitreal injection into rabbit eyes. Liposomes were prepared using phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidic acid, and alpha-tocopherol. Following a unilateral subconjunctival injection of either 3H-5FU-Lipo or 3H-5FU-PBS, rabbits were sacrificed at 0.5, 1, 4, and 8 hours. Significantly higher (p less than 0.05) drug levels were achieved with the encapsulated drug in the vitreous at all four time points and in the aqueous at three of four time points. Following bilateral intravitreal injections of 500 micrograms of 5FU in 0.1 ml, as either 3H-5FU-Lipo or 3H-5FU-PBS injected rabbits were sacrificed at 0, 6, 12, 24, and 48 hours. Vitreal drug levels were significantly higher (p less than 0.05) with encapsulated drug at all time points from 6 hours on. At 48 hours, the vitreal level with the encapsulated drug was 578 +/- 0.23 micrograms/ml compared with 1.06 +/- 0.07 micrograms/ml for 3H-5FU-PBS.
