Abstract Background Suicide has become a first-order public health concern after the negative impact of COVID-19 on the general population’s mental health. Several studies have analyzed the trends in suicide attempts (SA) before and after the onset of the pandemic, but few studies focus on the impact of the pandemic on medically serious suicide attempts (MSSA). Methods Participants were 385 hospitalized individuals ≥ 16 years old who made MSSA identified retrospectively through a review of e-medical records between 2018 and 2022 (“pre-COVID-19” and “COVID” periods). The two groups were compared on sociodemographic and clinical variables using Chi-square or Exact Fisher’s tests for categorical variables and a Mann-Whitney test for continuous variables. To study the variation in MSSA over time, MSSA were aggregated monthly. Joinpoint regression analyses were used to assess time trends. Resumen: Las visitas de pacientes con multimorbilidad, cronicidad compleja y fragilidad a los servicios de urgencias hospitalarios son un desafío creciente. Se presenta una estrategia local, basada en listados de preselección automatizada, una enfermera gestora de casos con experiencia específica y un consenso de derivación multinivel. Se muestra la factibilidad con 368 alertas identificadas, el 85% (n = 315) bien seleccionadas. La edad, la fragilidad, el porcentaje de atención domiciliaria, el índice de Barthel y la cognición fueron consistentes con los niveles de atención/derivación (primaria, intermedia y especializada) según criterios previamente consensuados. Con la generalización actual de los sistemas de información y análisis de datos, el rol creciente de enfermería avanzada y unos recursos sanitarios bien estructurados entre niveles, una selección automatizada, junto al consenso en circuitos y perfiles clínicos y la valoración autónoma de enfermería gestionando casos multifrecuentadores, podría mejorar, de forma proactiva y sencilla, una distribución entre niveles de las alertas más coherente con las necesidades sociosanitarias. Abstract: Visits to hospital emergency departments by patients with multimorbidity, complex chronic conditions, and frailty are becoming an increasing challenge. A territorial strategy has been developed, based on automated preselection lists, a nurse case manager with specialized experience, and a multi-level territorial referral consensus. The feasibility of this approach has been demonstrated, with 368 alerts detected, 85% of which were well-selected. Age, frailty, home care percentage, Barthel index, and cognition were progressively aligned with levels of care/referral (primary, intermediate, and specialized) according to previously agreed criteria. In 2024, there is extensive structured technical information, an expanding role for advanced nursing, and well-established inter-level service resources. Therefore, through automated selection, a consensual territorial protocol of pathways and clinical profiles, and autonomous nursing assessments managing multi-frequent cases, it would be possible to achieve, in a proactive, simple, and scalable manner, an appropriate distribution of alerts across levels, consistent with the social and healthcare needs of the patients.

Summary: Cells have developed protein quality-control strategies to manage the accumulation of misfolded substrates during heat stress. Using a soluble reporter of misfolding in fission yeast, Rho1.C17R-GFP, we demonstrate that upon mild heat shock, the reporter collapses in protein aggregate centers (PACs). They contain and/or require several chaperones, such as Hsp104, Hsp16, and the Hsp40/70 couple Mas5/Ssa2. Stress granules do not assemble at mild temperatures and, therefore, are not required for PAC formation; on the contrary, PACs may serve as nucleation centers for the assembly of stress granules. In contrast to the general belief, the dominant fate of these PACs is not degradation, and the aggregated reporter can be disassembled by chaperones and recovers native structure and activity. Using mass spectrometry, we show that thermo-unstable endogenous proteins form PACs as well. In conclusion, formation of PACs during heat shock is a chaperone-mediated adaptation strategy. : The formation of aggregate foci upon heat shock is often considered a hallmark of toxicity. Signaling cascades respond to specific inputs, but also require active interventions to be maintained in their basal/inactive levels in the absence of the activating signal(s). In a screen to search for protein quality control components required for wild-type tolerance to oxidative stress in fission yeast, we have isolated eight gene deletions conferring resistance not only to H2O2 but also to caffeine. We show that dual resistance acquisition is totally or partially dependent on the transcription factor Pap1. Some gene products, such as the ribosomal-ubiquitin fusion protein Ubi1, the E2 conjugating enzyme Ubc2 or the E3 ligase Ubr1, participate in basal ubiquitin labeling of Pap1, and others, such as Rpt4, are non-essential constituents of the proteasome. We demonstrate here that basal nucleo-cytoplasmic shuttling of Pap1, occurring even in the absence of stress, is sufficient for the interaction of the transcription factor with nuclear Ubr1, and we identify a 30 amino acids peptide in Pap1 as the degron for this important E3 ligase. The isolated gene deletions increase only moderately the concentration of the transcription factor, but it is sufficient to enhance basal tolerance to stress, probably by disturbing the inactive stage of this signaling cascade. Integrated use of molecular and morphological methods reveals unexpected diversity in the cosmopolitan siphonophore genus Nanomia. Species delimitation analyses based on COI and 16S sequences suggest up to three distinct lineages in addition to the previously accepted Nanomia bijuga (Delle Chiaje, 1844) and N. cara A. Agassiz, 1865. Here, we describe the North Pacific Nanomia septata sp. n., previously confused with both N. cara and N. bijuga, and provide improved morphological characters for the identification of these three Nanomia species. Phylogenetic analyses suggest two additional, hitherto undescribed clades from Japanese and Chinese waters, respectively, but the lack of morphological material prevents describing these putative species. The geographic distribution of molecularly and/or morphologically verified observations confirm a warm circumglobal distribution for N. bijuga and a boreal North Atlantic distribution for N. cara. Interestingly, four distinct lineages occur in the North Pacific, sometimes in close proximity. Abstract Loki’s Castle Vent Field (LCVF, 2300 m) was discovered in 2008 and represents the first black-smoker vent field discovered on the Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge (AMOR). However, a comprehensive faunal inventory of the LCVF has not yet been published, hindering the inclusion of the Arctic in biogeographic analyses of vent fauna. There is an urgent need to understand the diversity, spatial distribution and ecosystem function of the biological communities along the AMOR, which will inform environmental impact assesments of future deep-sea mining activities in the region. Therefore, our aim with this paper is to provide a comprehensive inventory of the fauna at LCVF and present a first insight into the food web of the vent community. The fauna of LCVF has a high degree of novelty, with five new species previously described and another ten new species awaiting formal description. Most of the new species from LCVF are either hydrothermal vent specialists or have been reported from other chemosynthesis-based ecosystems. The highest taxon richness is found in the diffuse venting areas and may be promoted by the biogenic habitat generated by the foundation species Sclerolinum contortum. The isotopic signatures of the vent community of LCVF show a clear influence of chemosynthetic primary production on the foodweb. Considering the novel and specialised fauna documented in this paper, hydrothermal vents on the AMOR should be regarded as vulnerable marine ecosystems and protective measures must therefore be implemented, especially considering the potential threat from resource exploration and exploitation activities in the near future.

Knowledge of life histories is crucial for understanding ecological and evolutionary processes, but for many hydrozoan species only incomplete life cycles have been described due to challenges in linking hydromedusae with their polyp stages. Using a combination of DNA barcoding, morphology, and ecological information, we describe for the first time the polyp stage of Halopsis ocellata Agassiz, 1865 and re-describe that of Mitrocomella polydiademata (Romanes, 1876). Campanulinid hydroids referable to Lafoeina tenuis Sars, 1874 and collected in the same biogeographic region as the type locality of this species are shown to be the polyp stage of these two mitrocomid hydromedusae. The nominal species L. tenuis thus is a species complex that includes the polyp stage of medusae belonging to at least two genera currently placed in a different family. Consistent morphological and ecological differences were found between the polyps linked to each of these two hydromedusae, but molecular results suggest that yet other species may have morphologically similar hydroids. Polyps morphologically identified to L. tenuis are therefore better referred to as Lafoeina tenuis-type until further associations are resolved, particularly when occurring outside of the area of distribution of H. ocellata and M. polydiademata. Molecular identification integrated with traditional taxonomy is confirmed as an effective approach to link inconspicuous stages of marine invertebrates with hitherto unknown life cycles, especially in often-overlooked taxa. Disentangling the relationships between L. tenuis, H. ocellata, and M. polydiademata lays the ground for future research aimed at resolving the taxonomy and systematics of the enigmatic families Mitrocomidae and Campanulinidae.

Aquaculture is increasing rapidly to meet global seafood demand. Some hydroid populations have been linked to mortality and health issues in finfish and shellfish, but their dynamics in and around aquaculture farms remain understudied. In the present work, two experiments, each with 36 panels, tested colonization (factors: depth, season of immersion) and succession (factors: depth, submersion duration) over one year. Hydroid surface cover was estimated for each species, and data were analyzed with multivariate techniques. The assemblage of hydrozoans was species-poor, although species richness, frequency and abundance increased with time, paralleling the overall increase in structural complexity of fouling assemblages. Submersion duration and season of immersion were particularly important in determining the species composition of the assemblages in the succession and colonization experiments, respectively. Production of water-borne propagules, including medusae, from the hydroids was observed from locally abundant colonies, among them the well-known fouling species Obelia dichotoma, potentially representing a nuisance for cultured fish through contact-driven envenomations and gill disorders. The results illustrate the potential importance of fouling hydroids and their medusae to the health of organisms in the aquaculture industry.
