2. A SWOT Analysis of Bring Your Own Devices in Mobile Learning

Abstract

In current education there is a trend called bring your own devices (BYOD), this refers to the policy of use of resources that allows students to bring their own mobile device to use in the classroom. BYOD allows students and educators to take advantage of technological tools to improve learning and instruction. Mobile devices in a BYOD environment provide educational experiences beyond the boundaries of a classroom. This trend was born in companies, where their employees are allowed to take to their workplaces personal property devices such as: laptops, tablets and smartphones. This generated several disadvantages and problems related to the security of the information. In education, many teachers and parents consider that mobile devices are a tool only for communication and entertainment and would become a distraction in the classroom. As noted, although technology and especially mobile devices have enormous potential to be used in education, there are also several factors that could limit their adoption. This article makes use of the literature review to perform a SWOT analysis of the use of BYOD in m-learning. [For the complete proceedings, see ED590271.]

Abstract

Over the years, educational institutions have faced significant difficulties in the teaching process at all educational levels, due to lack of motivation, concentration, attention, and confidence, among other aspects. In this sense, information and communication technologies can be the answer to transform educational models. One of the most promising and accessible technologies in recent years is mobile augmented reality (MAR), which allows students to visualize content through a mobile device combining the real environment with a virtual environment, providing an interactive and digital vision of the physical world in real time. The appropriate use of digital technologies in early childhood and primary education can promote socialization, comprehension, learning, language development, attention, and other educational benefits. However, due to the novelty of this technology, there is limited research and a gap in the literature on the use of MAR at these educational levels. This research work, through systematic mapping, aims to give an overview of how AR and mobile devices have been used in the last decade, which academic areas have benefited from the use of this innovative academic approach, and the main benefits and problems of using this technology in early and primary education. The findings are encouraging and show that AR technology, together with mobile devices, can be used to support the teaching of science, mathematics, reading, language, geography, etc.

15. Usability and Workload Evaluation of a Cybersecurity Educational Game Application: A Case Study

Abstract

Currently, social networks and Internet access have become a place that fosters risky experiences for their users, who are vulnerable and can become victims of violence, online abuse, extortion, etc. Therefore, it is considered necessary to make people aware of the appropriate use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) and Internet access, to minimize the risks and vulnerabilities associated with these practices. This research analyzes the use of a game-like mobile application called CiberSecApp, which was designed to support the teaching of basic cybersecurity. This application was designed as a game because gamification has been shown to generate motivation and keep users interested in long periods of time. In addition, the new generation of students perceives educational mobile apps as an innovative way to access educational content in a simple, ubiquitous, and portable way Unlike other similar initiatives in the existing literature, this research did not focus solely on the game design aspects, but also on evaluating the user experience. For this purpose, the IBM Computer Usability Satisfaction Questionnaires (CSUQ) and the NASA Task Load Index (TLX) were used to evaluate the usability of the mobile application and the mental workload generated by the participants. A total of 60 engineering students participated voluntarily in this research. The results obtained show that the use of gamification of educational content can support the teaching of cybersecurity by creating an intention of use and with a low mental workload for its users.

16. Evaluating the Robustness of Deep Learning Models against Adversarial Attacks: An Analysis with FGSM, PGD and CW

Abstract

This study evaluated the generation of adversarial examples and the subsequent robustness of an image classification model. The attacks were performed using the Fast Gradient Sign method, the Projected Gradient Descent method, and the Carlini and Wagner attack to perturb the original images and analyze their impact on the model’s classification accuracy. Additionally, image manipulation techniques were investigated as defensive measures against adversarial attacks. The results highlighted the model’s vulnerability to conflicting examples: the Fast Gradient Signed Method effectively altered the original classifications, while the Carlini and Wagner method proved less effective. Promising approaches such as noise reduction, image compression, and Gaussian blurring were presented as effective countermeasures. These findings underscore the importance of addressing the vulnerability of machine learning models and the need to develop robust defenses against adversarial examples. This article emphasizes the urgency of addressing the threat posed by harmful standards in machine learning models, highlighting the relevance of implementing effective countermeasures and image manipulation techniques to mitigate the effects of adversarial attacks. These efforts are crucial to safeguarding model integrity and trust in an environment marked by constantly evolving hostile threats. An average 25% decrease in accuracy was observed for the VGG16 model when exposed to the Fast Gradient Signed Method and Projected Gradient Descent attacks, and an even more significant 35% decrease with the Carlini and Wagner method.

Abstract

Un teleprompter es un dispositivo que proyecta texto en un espejo transparente frente a una cámara, permitiendo a los presentadores leer su guión mientras mantienen contacto visual con la audiencia. Dichos teleprompters funcionan, en su mayoría, de manera manual o a cierta velocidad fija, pero hoy en día existen teleprompters que reconocen tu voz para que avance con el texto. Existen muchas aplicaciones que sirven para esta tarea, sin embargo, las que usan reconocimiento de voz no suelen ser gratis y menos de código abierto. Este proyecto viene a solucionar este problema, creando una aplicación desarrollada con el framework Vue.js que cumpla con las características de una aplicación de pago, pero de código abierto.

19. Real-Time Recognition and Tracking in Urban Spaces Through Deep Learning: A Case Study

Abstract

Real-time object detection in urban environments is critical for security, transportation, and surveillance applications. This work presents an approach based on the You Only Look Once model for real-time object detection in urban scenarios. The methodology employed includes the collection and annotation of a diverse dataset, as well as the implementation of an intuitive user interface for real-time monitoring. A detailed method is designed in stages, including semi-supervised annotation techniques and data collection strategies in various urban and lighting conditions. The model was evaluated in urban environments, highlighting its ability to handle variations in the density of objects and unpredictable urban events. The results demonstrate that the proposed model achieves a precision rate of 90% and an average processing time per frame of 16 ms, which is suitable for real-time applications. Furthermore, this implementation can handle multiple objects simultaneously and offers robust responses to rapid environmental changes. We demonstrate real-time precision and efficiency improvement by comparing our model with other widely used approaches, such as Faster R-CNN, SSD, and EfficientDet. Additional metrics such as recall, F1 score, and Intersection over Union, essential for a holistic model performance evaluation, are also discussed. This work contributes to research in object detection in urban environments and offers a practical and ethical solution for real-time security and surveillance. Potential applications of our approach range from traffic monitoring to public safety and event management in urban environments. Ethical considerations are addressed, including privacy protection and bias mitigation, which are critical in surveillance technology.

Abstract

Today, teaching faces several challenges, including students’ difficulty in understanding abstract concepts and lack of motivation. To address these problems, the use of virtual reality (VR) has been explored as an innovative and potentially effective educational tool. However, so far, the effectiveness of VR applications and the perception of their use lack a clear and effective approach to be used to support education. The importance of addressing this problem lies in the need to improve the quality of teaching using emerging technologies. It is for this reason that it is important to find new strategies to improve the effectiveness of teaching using VR. In this context, this research presents the results of the FreeDev application, previously validated with 20 teachers and with 80 engineering students from a private university. FreeDev is a VR application designed to support the teaching of basic programming, it is aimed as an educational tool to provide an immersive experience to students on how to get started in programming and computational thinking. FreeDev has been well accepted, and both teachers and engineering students see it as a tool that can be used to support education. It is hoped that this research will contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the field of education.

21. A data mining model to predict the debts with risk of non-payment in tax administration

Abstract

One of the main tasks in tax administration is debt management. The main goal of this function is tax due collection. Statements are processed in order to select strategies to use in the debt management process to optimise the debt collection process. This work proposes to carry out a data mining process to predict debts of taxpayers with high probability of non-payment. The data mining process identifies high-risk debts using a survival analysis on a dataset from a tax administration. Three groups of tax debtors with similar payment behaviour were identified and a success rate of up to 90% was reached in estimating the payment time of taxpayers. The concordance index (C-index) was used to determine the performance of the constructed model. The highest prediction rate reached was 90.37% corresponding to the third group.

Abstract

Durante la pandemia de SARS-CoV-2 a nivel mundial, con las medidas de confinamiento domiciliario durante la fase más crítica y con las medidas de distanciamiento social posteriormente, la importancia de la Web como medio de comunicación de información sanitaria quedó completamente demostrada. Mucha de la información se publicó únicamente mediante gráficos, lo que hacía que no fuese accesible para todas las personas, en particular para las personas con una discapacidad visual. El objetivo de este trabajo final de grado es analizar los problemas de accesibilidad que presenta la visualización de información sanitaria en la Web, proponer una guía para mejorar la accesibilidad de la visualización de información sanitaria en la Web y desarrollar un prototipo para comprobar la utilidad de la guía.

23. Integrating OLAP with NoSQL Databases in Big Data Environments: Systematic Mapping

Abstract

The growing importance of data analytics is leading to a shift in data management strategy at many companies, moving away from simple data storage towards adopting Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) query analysis. Concurrently, NoSQL databases are gaining ground as the preferred choice for storing and querying analytical data. This article presents a comprehensive, systematic mapping, aiming to consolidate research efforts related to the integration of OLAP with NoSQL databases in Big Data environments. After identifying 1646 initial research studies from scientific digital repositories, a thorough examination of their content resulted in the acceptance of 22 studies. Utilizing the snowballing technique, an additional three studies were selected, culminating in a final corpus of twenty-five relevant articles. This review addresses the growing importance of leveraging NoSQL databases for OLAP query analysis in response to increasing data analytics demands. By identifying the most commonly used NoSQL databases with OLAP, such as column-oriented and document-oriented, prevalent OLAP modeling methods, such as Relational Online Analytical Processing (ROLAP) and Multidimensional Online Analytical Processing (MOLAP), and suggested models for batch and real-time processing, among other results, this research provides a roadmap for organizations navigating the integration of OLAP with NoSQL. Additionally, exploring computational resource requirements and performance benchmarks facilitates informed decision making and promotes advancements in Big Data analytics. The main findings of this review provide valuable insights and updated information regarding the integration of OLAP cubes with NoSQL databases to benefit future research, industry practitioners, and academia alike. This consolidation of research efforts not only promotes innovative solutions but also promises reduced operational costs compared to traditional database systems.

44. Technological Innovations in Large-Scale Teaching: Five Roots of Massive Open Online Courses

Abstract

There are millions of people worldwide--of all ages, conditions, backgrounds, and motivations--with significant learning needs. Unfortunately, traditional education is not efficient enough to meet these needs. That is, the available educational resources are not fully exploited to help cover the demand. There is an increasing need for large-scale access to cost-effective and high-quality education. The use of technological innovations for large-scale teaching might be part of the solution. In this context, the goals of this study were to identify technological innovations that can be considered historical milestones in large-scale teaching, to systematize experts' opinions about the topic, and to propose strategies for the successful implementation of massive open online courses (MOOCs). The researchers identified and analyzed a documentary corpus and found that, in the use of technologies for large-scale teaching, there has been a parallel evolution that have led to the emergence of MOOCs and includes five roots: distance education and online learning, testing or teaching machines and computer-assisted instruction, learning management systems, open education and open educational resources, and online massive teaching. The researchers propose three strategies for the successful implementation of MOOCs: careful consideration of the c/x MOOC pedagogical spectrum characteristics, selection of an appropriate MOOC model, and management of implementation challenges.

Abstract

The growing importance of data analytics is leading to a shift in data management strategy at many companies, moving away from simple data storage towards adopting Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) query analysis. Concurrently, NoSQL databases are gaining ground as the preferred choice for storing and querying analytical data. This article presents a comprehensive, systematic mapping, aiming to consolidate research efforts related to the integration of OLAP with NoSQL databases in Big Data environments. After identifying 1646 initial research studies from scientific digital repositories, a thorough examination of their content resulted in the acceptance of 22 studies. Utilizing the snowballing technique, an additional three studies were selected, culminating in a final corpus of twenty-five relevant articles. This review addresses the growing importance of leveraging NoSQL databases for OLAP query analysis in response to increasing data analytics demands. By identifying the most commonly used NoSQL databases with OLAP, such as column-oriented and document-oriented, prevalent OLAP modeling methods, such as Relational Online Analytical Processing (ROLAP) and Multidimensional Online Analytical Processing (MOLAP), and suggested models for batch and real-time processing, among other results, this research provides a roadmap for organizations navigating the integration of OLAP with NoSQL. Additionally, exploring computational resource requirements and performance benchmarks facilitates informed decision making and promotes advancements in Big Data analytics. The main findings of this review provide valuable insights and updated information regarding the integration of OLAP cubes with NoSQL databases to benefit future research, industry practitioners, and academia alike.
