Population structure, growth, age, mortality and exploitation status of Atherina boyeri, caught in the period from June 2013 to May 2014 in the Lesina lagoon (Apulia region, southern Adriatic) was studied. Samples were taken each month by using beach seines . The length–weight relationship of all sand smell specimens was described by the equation W=0.012*TL 3.10; (R2= 0.84). Population parameters including the asymptotic length (L∞) and growth coefficient (K) were assessed to evaluate the stock status. The recruitment pattern was modeled with a FiSAT routine. The asymptotic length (L∞) was 111.0 mm, while the growth coefficient (K) was 0.68 year−1. The growth performance index ((φ’) reached 3.92. The total mortality coefficient “Z”, the natural mortality coefficient “M” and the fishing mortality coefficient “F” were estimated as 2.24, 1.48 and 0.76 year-1, respectively. Exploitation rate for the population of A. boyeri in the Lesina lagoon estimated as 0.34 was resulted still lower than the predicted maximum value of Emax 0.59. The probability of capture indicated that L50 was of 55.57 mm, indicating that the stock of sand smelt in Lesina lagoon is not being over-fished., Istraživana je struktura populacije, rast, starost, smrtnost i status eksploatacije olige Atherinaboyeri, ulovljene u razdoblju od lipnja 2013. do svibnja 2014. u laguni Lesina (regija Apulija, južni Jadran). Utvrđeni su parametri populacije, uključujući asimptotsku duljinu (L∞) i koeficijent rasta (K), kako bi se procijenilo stanje zaliha. Obrazac novačenja modeliran je FiSAT rutinom. Asimptotska duljina (L∞) iznosila je 111,0 mm, dok je koeficijent rasta (K) iznosio 0,68 godina − 1. Indeks učinka rasta (φ’) dosegnuo je 3,92. Ukupni koeficijent smrtnosti „Z“, koeficijent prirodne smrtnosti „M“ i koeficijent mortaliteta ribolova „F“ procijenjeni su na 2,24, 1,48 i 0,76 godina-1.Stopa eksploatacije populacije olige u Lesinskoj laguni procijenjena na 0,34 rezultirala je i dalje nižom od predviđene maksimalne vrijednosti Emax 0,59.

The purpose of this study was to fhid out how effective the implementation villagedevelopment in North Salibabu Village, Salibabu district, Talaud Islands Regency.This study uses a descriptive-qualitative approach. Aims Patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACSs) who are managed without coronary revascularization represent a mixed and understudied population that seems to receive suboptimal pharmacological treatment. Methods and results We assessed patterns of antithrombotic therapies employed during the hospitalization and in-hospital clinical events of medically managed patients with ACS enrolled in the prospective, multicentre, nationwide EYESHOT (EmploYEd antithrombotic therapies in patients with acute coronary Syndromes HOspitalized in iTalian cardiac care units) registry. Among the 2585 consecutive ACS patients enrolled in EYESHOT, 783 (30.3%) did not receive any revascularization during hospital admission. Of these, 478 (61.0%) underwent coronary angiography (CA), whereas 305 (39.0%) did not. The median GRACE and CRUSADE risk scores were significantly higher among patients who did not undergo CA compared with those who did (180 vs. 145, P < 0.0001 and 50 vs. 33, P < 0.0001, respectively). Antithrombotic therapies employed during hospitalization significantly differ between patients who received CA and those who did not with unfractioned heparin and novel P2Y12 inhibitors more frequently used in the first group, and low-molecular-weight heparins and clopidogrel in the latter group. During the index hospitalization, patients who did not receive CA presented a higher incidence of ischaemic cerebrovascular events and of mortality compared with those who underwent CA (1.6 vs. 0.2%, P = 0.04 and 7.9 vs. 2.7%, P = 0.0009, respectively). Conclusion Almost one-third of ACS patients are managed without revascularization during the index hospitalization. In this population, a lower use of recommended antiplatelet therapy and worse clinical outcome were observed in those who did not undergo CA when compared with those who did. Aims In the last decades, several new therapies have emerged for the treatment of acute coronary syndromes (ACS). We sought to describe real-world patterns of use of antithrombotic treatments in the catheterization laboratory for ACS patients undergoing percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI). Methods EmploYEd antithrombotic therapies in patients with acute coronary Syndromes HOspitalized in iTalian cardiac care units was a nationwide, prospective registry aimed to evaluate antithrombotic strategies employed in ACS patients in Italy. Results Over a 3-week period, a total of 2585 consecutive ACS patients have been enrolled in 203 cardiac care units across Italy. Among these patients, 1755 underwent PCI (923 with ST-elevation myocardial infarction and 832 with non-ST-elevation ACS). In the catheterization laboratory, unfractioned heparin was the most used antithrombotic drug in both ST-elevation myocardial infarction (64.7%) and non-ST-elevation ACS (77.5%) undergoing PCI and, as aspirin, bivalirudin and glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitors (GPIs) more frequently employed before or during PCI compared with the postprocedural period. Any crossover of heparin therapy occurred in 36.0% of cases, whereas switching from one P2Y12 inhibitor to another occurred in 3.7% of patients. Multivariable analysis yielded several independent predictors of GPIs and of bivalirudin use in the catheterization laboratory, mainly related to clinical presentation, PCI complexity and presence of complications during the procedure. Conclusion In our contemporary, nationwide, all-comers cohort of ACS patients undergoing PCI, antithrombotic therapies were commonly initiated before the catheterization laboratory. In the periprocedural period, the most frequently employed drugs were unfractioned heparin, leading to a high rate of crossover, followed by GPIs and bivalirudin, mainly used during complex PCI. Accurate germplasm characterization and elucidation of the genetic relationships among the accessions maintained in a plant collection serve as essential links between the conservation and appropriate utilization of plant genetic resources. The present study was undertaken to assess polymorphism and relationships among 24 Apulian fig accessions using fluorescence-based AFLP (amplified fragment length polymorphism) markers. Five selective primer pairs resulted in 553 amplification products of which 535 were polymorphic among the analysed genotypes. A high degree of polymorphism was revealed by these primer combinations that ranged from 91.6 to 100%. The genetic relationships among the studied figs were estimated using the Dice similarity index that was calculated between each pair of genotypes. The pairwise genetic similarities ranged from 0.30 to 0.88 with a mean value of 0.60, thus showing a good degree of inter-cultivar genetic diversity at the DNA level. Intra-cultivar diversity was also investigated in the two cultivars San Giovanni (0.78) and Dottato (0.84), for which three and two different accessions were analysed, respectively. Dendrogram constructed using UPGMA cluster analysis showed that cv. Potentino separated from the other 23 genotypes at a genetic similarity value of 0.35 pointing out a relatively high genetic divergence of this cultivar from the others. The remaining 23 genotypes formed two principal clusters diverging at a genetic similarity value of 0.59. The results of this study will help in the formulation of appropriate strategies for conservation and cultivar improvement in Apulian figs, for which limited knowledge of the genetic diversity is available.

The trophic adaptability of a species may influence its dispersion potential and the ability to invade foreign territories. Understanding the factors that facilitate trophic adaptability may help the provision of forecasts about the potential dispersion of allocthonous species, even in a warmer and acidified world, according to the current trends of global changes. Various studies demonstrated the adaptability of Penaeus japonicus Bate to variable feeding regimes under natural conditions. To optimize artificial diets for the aquaculture of Penaeid shrimps, gut content data of specimens cultured in ponds were compared to contents from shrimps fed on natural macro benthic communities in a brackish-water lagoon. In addition, the feeding adaptability of this shrimp to scarcely diversified benthic associations was tested in aquaculture ponds. Our comparative analyses confirm that P. japonicus feeding pattern may be largely adapted to variations in the available benthic organisms, in different management conditions.

Penaeus japonicus Bate is absent on the Italian coasts, but it is considered a very promising species for national aquaculture. To develop the shrimp-culture on a commercial basis, a convenient method for producing eggs and larvae of Penaeus japonicus was studied. A stock of 156 females, age class 1+ and F3, underwent unilateral eyestalk ablation and they were stocked with males in three plastic tanks (bottom area 14 m2) at a density of 25 individuals/m2 and a sex ratio of 1:1. Conditions of environment and management consisted of: temperature 21±3°C; natural light and photoperiod; total exchange of sea water every day; feeding on mussels. A month after eyestalk ablation the females were inspected every 7–10 days; mature females were transferred to the spawning tanks. Females with well developed gonads averaged 25.0% of the population of females at every inspection; 51.3% of spawners were impregnated with spermatophores; others were inseminated artificially by the method of introducing spermatophores into the thelycum. In six inspections (carried out during a period of 89 days), 3,028,525 eggs were released; a female released 17,500 eggs on the average (maximum was 123,000 eggs, minimum 4,340). The mean rate of fertilized eggs was 52.7%—67.7% from naturally inseminated females and 7.5% from the artificially inseminated ones. The mean hatching rate was 30.9%—40.1% from natural insemination and 3.3% from artificial insemination. Total amount of viable nauplii was 820,550.

In 2013 the International Journal of Surgical Pathology published a case report of intrasplenic malignant mesothelioma (MM) in a 48-year-old man: it was the first report in literature describing a case of primitive intra-splenic MM, described without a history of asbestos exposure.To verify the possible past exposure to asbestos, ignored by the patient himself, by studying in depth his environmental and occupational history.Information about the occupational and non-occupational history of the subject was collected by Experts of the Operational Unit of Occupational Health and Safety Control (UOC PSAL) of the Local Health Unit Umbria 1 - Perugia, using the Italian National Mesothelioma Register (ReNaM) questionnaire and guide lines; an inspection was carried out at the past canning industry where the patient worked in the period 1982-1990 and material was taken to be analysed by MOCF and SEM.Samples showed the presence of asbestos fibres belonging to the amphibole class (amosite and crocidolite) and to the serpentine class (chrysotile).The survey described the past occupational exposure to asbestos in a canning industry, where the subject worked in the period 1982-1990, unknown to the patient himself. The authors strongly confirm the usefulness of standardized methods, such as the ReNaM Questionnaire, and the importance of technical expertise of the investigator to find and analyse the suspect materials and to demonstrate possible past occupational exposure to asbestos.

This study evaluated the effects of commercially available antiseptic mouthrinses on human gingival fibroblast and keratinocyte behaviour and metabolism. Three mouthrinses containing essential oil (EO), chlorhexidine (CHX) and amine fluoride/stannous fluoride (AFSF), were tested in an in vitro study. Human gingival fibroblasts and keratinocytes were washed with 10% or 30% concentration of the commercial mouthrinses and their effects on cell adhesion and proliferation were investigated as well as the specific gene expression of markers involved in oral mucosa metabolism. As markers of cell metabolism, type I and IV collagens, laminin, fibronectin, fibromodulin and integrins were studied with real-time PCR. Moreover, interleukin-1 secretion, one of the major pro-inflammatory cytokines, was evaluated. The results showed that CHX significantly reduced fibroblast and keratinocyte substrate adhesion capacities and CHX and EO inhibited cell proliferation better than AFSF rinse. The gene expression of several matrix components and cell adhesion receptors was downregulated in cells washed with CHX and EO compared with those washed with AFSF rinse. In conclusion, the AFSF mouthrinse does not induce or induces to a lesser extent the onset of irritation and/or cytotoxicity than CHX or EO. These findings and those of future studies will enable us to gain further insight into the clinical significance and effects of commercial mouthrinses. Pending further investigations, clinicians should be aware of the potentially adverse effects of mouthrinses and warn their patients against making improper use of these products.

Immunological features of GM-490 cells, a new blood cell line from a patient with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, included lack of CD34, CD38, CD45, CD14, HLA-DR, and lymphoid and myeloid markers and expression of CD29, CD36, CD44, CD54, CD71, CD105, and CD133. Molecular analysis indicated CD45 gene expression was absent but CD34 mRNA was present. GM-490 cells constitutively produced fibronectin (FN), type III and traces of type I collagen, collagenases, glycosaminoglycans (GAG) and biglycan and betaglycan proteoglycans (PG) as well as FGF2 and TGFβ1. When FGF2 and/or TGFβ1 were added to cells in vitro, they stimulated cell proliferation and differently modulated matrix production and growth factor receptor expression. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) detection of transcripts encoding for osteocalcin and RUNX2 suggests GM-490 cells differentiate towards the osteoblast pathway. GM-490 cells expressed the low affinity nerve growth factor receptor (p75LNGFR), a somatic stem cell marker that is not detected in hematopoietic cells, leading to the hypothesis that GM-490 has mesenchymal stem cell properties. The reciprocal modulating effects of FGF2 and TGFβ1 on each other's receptors make the GM-490 cell line a new model for investigating the relationship between these growth factors and their receptors in autocrine loops which are believed to sustain the malignant clone in hematological diseases. © 2005 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

The reproduction of the native penaeid shrimp, Melicertus kerathurus (Forskal, 1775) was studied along the marine belt of the southeastern coast of Italy, between the cities of Termoli and Peschici, in an area covering approximately 100 km, down to the isobath of 35 m. Sampling was carried out periodically from June 2006 to September 2007, by experimental trawl survey. The results proved that the main reproductive period of Melicertus kerathurus spans from the end of May to about mid-August, with the main peak falling in June and July. The sex ratio (males/females) averaged 1.44 (± 0.61), with oscillations between 0.61 and 2.70. The size-at-maturity was estimated at 127.56 mm Total Length (CL = 31.42 mm) in males and 175.18 mm (CL = 45.56 mm) in females. The average gonadosomatic index varied in females at stage IV of ovarian maturity from 10.7% in June to 9.69% in July, with maximum values of 7.35% and 14.35% (± 1.99%). Relative fecundity averaged 79,143 (± 19,041) mature oocytes and the main absolute fecundity resulted in 322,102 (± 100,482). The average diameter of mature oocytes was determined to be 258.70 (± 57.49) μ m. E'stato studiato il ciclo riproduttivo del gambero peneide Melicertus kerathurus (Forskal, 1775) nelle acque del Mar Adriatico, sulla costa sud orientale italiana, lungo una fascia di circa 100 km, tra le citta di Termoli e Peschici, estendentesi al largo fino all'isobata di 35 m. Sono stati effettuati periodicamente campionamenti della popolazione del peneide dal giugno 2006 al settembre 2007, mediante reti a strascico. Lo studio ha evidenziato che la specie nell'area presa in considerazione ha un periodo riproduttivo che si estende circa dalla fine di maggio alla meta di agosto, con una fase di maggiore attivita nei mesi di giugno e luglio. Il rapporto sessi (maschi/femmine) e risultato mediamente di 1,44 (± 0,61), con fluttuazioni comprese tra 0,61 e 2,70. La lunghezza totale alla quale la specie si riproduce e risultata per i maschi di 127,56 mm (lunghezza del carapace = 31,42 mm) e per le femmine di 175,18 mm (lunghezza del carapace = 45,56 mm). L'indice gonadosomatico nelle femmine al IV stadio di maturita ovarica variava da 10,7% in giugno a 9,69% in luglio, con oscillazioni comprese tra 7,35% e 14,35% (± 1,99%). La fecondita relativa e risultata mediamente pari a 79.143 (± 19.041) ovociti maturi per grammo di ovario, mentre la fecondita assoluta era in media pari a 322.102 (± 100.482) ovociti maturi per riproduttrice. Il diametro medio degli ovociti maturi misurava 258,70 (± 57,49) μ m.

Background Silicosis is mediated by macrophages, their soluble mediators, and extracellular matrix molecules. In this study, we investigated the effects of silica and/or hyaluronate (HA) on several alveolar macrophage responses. Methods We evaluated glycosaminoglycan (GAG) production by radiolabeled precursors, nitric oxide (NO) release by its oxidation product, phagocytic activity by Candida albicans internalization, and the secretion of two fibrogenic cytokines, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and transforming growth factor (TGF)-β, by specific assays. Results Silica significantly reduced GAG secretion, particularly HA secretion. Alone, it decreased Candida uptake; associated with HA, it enhanced the reduction. Silica and Candida reduced NO release, which was not significantly affected when silica- or Candida-exposed cells were also treated with HA. TNF-α and TGF-β activities were stimulated by silica but reduced by HA. Conclusions The results suggest that silica and HA modify alveolar macrophage functional differentiation. Silica- and HA-induced modifications of the microenvironment could determine whether the response proceeds toward healing and repair or toward lung chronic pathology.
