Abstract

We give a new proof of a recent result due to Mats Andersson and Elizabeth Wulcan, generalizing the local Grothendieck duality theorem. It can also be seen as a generalization of a previous result by Mikael Passare. Abstract

Several amine-containing components of individual vesicles from the atrial gland of Aplysia californica were identified with capillary electrophoresis (CE). On-line derivatization with naphthalene-2,3-dicarboxaldehyde was performed, and the derivatized amine-containing components were detected with laser-induced fluorescence (LIF). Amino acids, including taurine, that had not been determined previously in atrial gland vesicles were observed by using CE-LIF, and their identities were confirmed with CE, HPLC, NMR, and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. The finding that taurine is packaged and stored into secretory vesicles supports the hypothesis that taurine may exhibit neuromodulatory activity. The bioactive peptides, well-known to be in atrial gland vesicles, were detected in lysed vesicle samples fractionated with HPLC and analyzed by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. These peptides were also observed in single-vesicle runs with CE-LIF. The atrial gland vesicles (ranging from 0.5 to 2 [[micro]meter] diameter and 65 aL to 4 fL volume, respectively) studied in this work represent the smallest biological entities to be analyzed chemically on an individual basis.

24. Pilgrimstad revisited - a multi-proxy reconstruction of Early/Middle Weichselian climate and environment at a key site in central Sweden

Abstract

The site Pilgrimstad in central Sweden has often been cited as a key locality for discussions of ice-free/ice-covered intervals during the Early and Middle Weichselian. Multi-proxy investigations of a recently excavated section at Pilgrimstad now provide a revised picture of the climatic and environmental development between ∼80 and 36 ka ago. The combination of sedimentology, geochemistry, OSL and 14C dating, and macrofossil, siliceous microfossil and chironomid analyses shows: (i) a lower succession of glaciofluvial/fluvial, lacustrine and glaciolacustrine sediments; (ii) an upper lacustrine sediment sequence; and (iii) Last Glacial Maximum till cover. Microfossils in the upper lacustrine sediments are initially characteristic for oligo- to mesotrophic lakes, and macrofossils indicate arctic/sub-arctic environments and mean July temperatures >8 °C. These conditions were, however, followed by a return to a low-nutrient lake and a cold and dry climate. The sequence contains several hiatuses, as shown by the often sharp contacts between individual units, which suggests that ice-free intervals alternated with possible ice advances during certain parts of the Early and Middle Weichselian

Abstract

Reduced plant height and culm robustness are quantitative characteristics important for assuring cereal crop yield and quality under adverse weather conditions. A very limited number of short-culm mutant alleles were introduced into commercial crop cultivars during the Green Revolution. We identified phenotypic traits, including sturdy culm, specific for deficiencies in brassinosteroid biosynthesis and signaling in semidwarf mutants of barley (Hordeum vulgare). This set of characteristic traits was explored to perform a phenotypic screen of near-isogenic short-culm mutant lines from the brachytic, breviaristatum, dense spike, erectoides, semibrachytic, semidwarf, and slender dwarf mutant groups. In silico mapping of brassinosteroid-related genes in the barley genome in combination with sequencing of barley mutant lines assigned more than 20 historic mutants to three brassinosteroid-biosynthesis genes (BRASSINOSTEROID-6-OXIDASE, CONSTITUTIVE PHOTOMORPHOGENIC DWARF, and DIMINUTO) and one brassinosteroid-signaling gene (BRASSINOSTEROID-INSENSITIVE1 [HvBRI1]). Analyses of F2 and M2 populations, allelic crosses, and modeling of nonsynonymous amino acid exchanges in protein crystal structures gave a further understanding of the control of barley plant architecture and sturdiness by brassinosteroid-related genes. Alternatives to the widely used but highly temperature-sensitive uzu1.a allele of HvBRI1 represent potential genetic building blocks for breeding strategies with sturdy and climate-tolerant barley cultivars.

Abstract

The results from a series of neutron and photon irradiation tests of a high speed digital optical data link based on a commercial serialiser and a vertical cavity surface emitting laser are described. The link was developed as a candidate for the front-end readout of the ATLAS electromagnetic calorimeter.The components at the emitting end of the link were unaffected by neutron and photon irradiation levels exceeding those expected during 10 years of mbox{LHC} running. However, the link suffered from single event upsets (SEU) when irradiated with energetic neutrons. A very general method based on the Burst Generation Rate(BGR) model has been developed and is used to extrapolate the error rate observed during tests to that expected at the LHC. A model independent extrapolation was used to check the BGR approach and the results were consistent once systematic errors weretaken into account.

33. Assessment of fire exposed concrete with full-field strain determination

Abstract

A concrete structure exposed to fire deteriorates when the temperature increase in the structure. An experimental study has been performed in order to evaluate the degree of degradation of concrete exposed to two different fire scenarios. As the thermal diffusivity of concrete is low, high thermal gradient is induced in the cross-section. This causes inhomogeneous mechanical properties of a concrete structure. In traditionally core testing of the elastic modulus and compressive the material is assumed to be homogeneous, this is not the case when concrete has been exposed to a real fire. By using an optical full-field strain measuring device the mechanical response at different depth, from the fire exposed surface, can be studied. In this study a typical concrete mix for civil engineer applications were used. In addition a similar concrete mix with reduced aggregate size was tested. The test samples were exposed to the standard fire curve ISO 834-1 or a temperature rise of 10 °C/min. Abstract

The radiation tolerance of three multimode optical fibres has been investigatedto establish their suitability for use in the front-end data links of the ATLAS experiment. Both gamma and neutron irradiation studies are reported. A step-index fibre with a pure silica core showed an induced attenuation of $\sim$0.05~dB/mat 330~kGy(Si) and 1$\times$10$^{15}$~n(1~MeV~Si)/cm$^{2}$ and is suitablefor use with the inner detector links which operate at 40-80~Mb/s. A graded-indexfibre with a predominantly germanium doped core exhibits an induced attenuation of $\sim$0.1~dB/mat 800~Gy(Si) and 2$\times$10$^{13}$~n(1~MeV~Si)/cm$^{2}$ and is suitable for the calorimeterlinks which operate at 1.6~Gb/s. Measurements of the dose rate dependence of the induced attenuation indicate that the attenuation in ATLAS will be lower.

Abstract

The construction and beam test results of the ATLAS electromagnetic end-cap calorimeter pre-production module 0 are presented. The stochastic term of the energy resolution is between 10% and 12.5% GeV1/2 over the full pseudorapidity range. Position and angular resolutions are found to be in agreement with simulation. A global constant term of 0.6% is obtained in the pseudorapidity range 2.5 < η < 3.2 (inner wheel)., QC 20100525

Abstract

Shortage of water has been recognised as an important obstacle to development of various sectors of socity, primarily food production, and, to a lesser extent, industrial expansion. Lack of access to safe water for household use is also a significant drawback for human well-being. As a consequence, the effort to withdraw water from streams, lakes and from the ground, has been substantial during recent decades. From a supply augmentation point of view, the past focus on the quantitative aspects of water provision to sectors in society has, no doubt, been successful. The prevailing policy has, however, evolved with scant attention to the threat to water quality degradation which is an inevitable by-product of an intensified water resources utilisation. This is particularly apparent in dry areas where the dilution effect of natural water courses is reduced as a result of increased withdrawals. Another shortcoming of the water supply policy has been a surprising lack of concern about how water is actually being used in various sectors, what relative benefits are generated, and how water is being disposed after use. It is argued in this article that high rates of water withdrawal necessitate a change in water policy. Among other things the connections between water quantity and quality will have to be dealt with and also the allocation of water supply between incompatible and competing water uses.
