BackgroundUp-regulation of voltage-gated calcium channel α2 δ1 subunit post spinal nerve ligation (SNL) injury or in α2 δ1 -overexpressing transgenic (Tg) mice correlates with tactile allodynia, a pain state mediated mainly by Aβ sensory fibres forming synaptic connections with deep dorsal horn (DDH) neurons. It is not clear, however, whether dysregulated α2 δ1 alters DDH synaptic neurotransmission that underlies tactile allodynia development post nerve injury.MethodsTactile allodynia was tested in the SNL and α2 δ1 Tg models. Miniature excitatory/inhibitory post-synaptic currents were recorded in DDH neurons from these animal models using whole-cell patch clamp slice recording techniques.ResultsThere was a significant increase in the frequency, but not amplitude, of miniature excitatory post-synaptic currents (mEPSC) in DDH neurons that correlated with tactile allodynia in SNL and α2 δ1 Tg mice. Gabapentin, an α2 δ1 ligand that is known to block tactile allodynia in these models, also normalized mEPSC frequency dose-dependently in DDH neurons from SNL and α2 δ1 Tg mice. In contrast, neither frequency nor amplitude of miniature inhibitory post-synaptic currents was altered in DDH neurons from SNL and α2 δ1 Tg mice.ConclusionOur data suggest that α2 δ1 dysregulation is highly likely contributing to tactile allodynia through a pre-synaptic mechanism involving facilitation of excitatory synaptic neurotransmission in DDH of spinal cord.

BackgroundOverexpression of the voltage-gated calcium channel (VGCC) alpha-2-delta1 subunit protein (Cav α2 δ1 ) has been shown to cause pain states. However, whether VGCC are involved in pain states driven by abnormal Cav α2 δ1 expression is not known.MethodsIntrathecal injection of N-, P/Q- and L-type VGCC blockers were tested in two models: a transgenic neuronal Cav α2 δ1 overexpression (TG) model with behavioural hypersensitivity and a spinal nerve ligation (SNL) model with Cav α2 δ1 overexpression in sensory pathways and neuropathy pain states.ResultsThe nociceptive response to mechanical stimuli was significantly attenuated in both models with ω-conotoxin GVIA (an N-type VGCC blocker) and nifedipine (an L-type VGCC blocker), in which ω-conotoxin GVIA appeared more potent than nifedipine. Treatments with ω-agatoxin IVA (P-VGCC blocker), but not ω-conotoxin MVIIC (Q-VGCC blocker) had similar potency in the TG model as the N-type VGCC blocker, while both ω-agatoxin IVA and ω-conotoxin MVIIC had minimal effects in the SNL model compared with controls.ConclusionThese findings suggest that, at the spinal level, N- and L-type VGCC are likely involved in behavioural hypersensitivity states driven by Cav α2 δ1 overexpression. Q-type VGCC has minimal effects in both models. The anti-nociceptive effects of P-type VGCC blocker in the Cav α2 δ1 TG mice, but minimally at the SNL model with presynaptic Cav α2 δ1 up-regulation, suggest that its potential action site(s) is at the post-synaptic and/or supraspinal level. These findings support that N-, L- and P/Q-type VGCC have differential contributions to behavioural hypersensitivity modulated by Cav α2 δ1 dysregulation at the spinal cord level.

BackgroundVoltage-gated calcium channel α2 δ1 subunit is the binding site for gabapentin, an effective drug in controlling neuropathic pain states including thermal hyperalgesia. Hyperalgesia to noxious thermal stimuli in both spinal nerve-ligated (SNL) and voltage-gated calcium channel α2 δ1 overexpressing transgenic (Tg) mice correlates with higher α2 δ1 levels in dorsal root ganglia and dorsal spinal cord. In this study, we investigated whether abnormal synaptic transmission is responsible for thermal hyperalgesia induced by elevated α2 δ1 expression in these models.MethodsBehavioural sensitivities to thermal stimuli were test in L4 SNL and sham mice, as well as in α2 δ1 Tg and wild-type mice. Miniature excitatory (mEPSC) and inhibitory (mIPSC) post-synaptic currents were recorded in superficial dorsal spinal cord neurons from these models using whole-cell patch clamp slice recording techniques.ResultsThe frequency, but not amplitude, of mEPSC in superficial dorsal horn neurons was increased in SNL and α2 δ1 Tg mice, which could be attenuated by gabapentin dose dependently. Intrathecal α2 δ1 antisense oligodeoxynucleotide treatment diminished increased mEPSC frequency and gabapentin's inhibitory effects in elevated mEPSC frequency in the SNL mice. In contrast, neither the frequency nor the amplitude of mIPSC was altered in superficial dorsal horn neurons from the SNL and α2 δ1 Tg mice.ConclusionsOur findings support a role of peripheral nerve injury-induced α2 δ1 in enhancing pre-synaptic excitatory input onto superficial dorsal spinal cord neurons that contributes to nociception development.

BackgroundInjury to the trigeminal nerve often results in the development of chronic pain states including tactile allodynia, or hypersensitivity to light touch, in orofacial area, but its underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. Peripheral nerve injury has been shown to cause up-regulation of thrombospondin-4 (TSP4) in dorsal spinal cord that correlates with neuropathic pain development. In this study, we examined whether injury-induced TSP4 is critical in mediating orofacial pain development in a rat model of chronic constriction injury to the infraorbital nerve.MethodsOrofacial sensitivity to mechanical stimulation was examined in a unilateral infraorbital nerve ligation rat model. The levels of TSP4 in trigeminal ganglia and associated spinal subnucleus caudalis and C1/C2 spinal cord (Vc/C2) from injured rats were examined at time points correlating with the initiation and peak orofacial hypersensitivity. TSP4 antisense and mismatch oligodeoxynucleotides were intrathecally injected into injured rats to see if antisense oligodeoxynucleotide treatment could reverse injury-induced TSP4 up-regulation and orofacial behavioural hypersensitivity.ResultsOur data indicated that trigeminal nerve injury induced TSP4 up-regulation in Vc/C2 at a time point correlated with orofacial tactile allodynia. In addition, intrathecal treatment with TSP4 antisense, but not mismatch, oligodeoxynucleotides blocked both injury-induced TSP4 up-regulation in Vc/C2 and behavioural hypersensitivity.ConclusionsOur data support that infraorbital nerve injury leads to TSP4 up-regulation in trigeminal spinal complex that contributes to orofacial neuropathic pain states. Blocking this pathway may provide an alternative approach in management of orofacial neuropathic pain states.

Intrathecal antisense or mismatch control oligodeoxynucleotides were used to treat SCI rats with nociceptive hyperreflexia, and Western blots were used to measure TSP4 protein levels in dorsal spinal cord samples.ResultsSCI induced below-level hindpaw hypersensitivity to stimuli. TSP4 protein levels are up-regulated in dorsal spinal cord of SCI rats with nociceptive hyperreflexia, but not in SCI rats without nociceptive hyperreflexia. There was no significant difference in motor function recovery post-injury between SCI rats with or without nociceptive hyperreflexia. Intrathecal treatment with TSP4 antisense, but not mismatch control, oligodeoxynucleotides led to reversal of injury-induced TSP4 up-regulation and nociceptive hyperreflexia in SCI rats.ConclusionsSCI leads to TSP4 up-regulation in lumbar spinal cord that may play a critical role in mediating centrally mediated behavioural hypersensitivity. Blocking this pathway may be helpful in management of SCI-induced changes in nociception.

The southwestern region of China is the largest exposed karst area in the world and serves as an important ecological security barrier for the upstream of Yangtze River and Pearl River. Different from the critical zone of non-karst areas, the epikarst, formed by an interwoven network of denudation pores, is the core area of karst critical zone. Water is the most active component that participates in internal material cycle and energy flow within the critical zone. We reviewed relevant research conducted in the southwestern region from three aspects: the characte-rization of critical zone structure, the hydrological processes of soil-epikarst system, and their model simulations. We further proposed potential research hotpots. The main approach involved multi-scale and multi-method integrated observations, as well as interdisciplinary collaboration. Precisely characterizing the eco-hydrological processes of the vegetation-soil-epikarst coupling system was a new trend in the future research. This review would provide scientific reference for further studies on hydrological processes in critical zones and regional hydrological water resource management in karst areas.

Thrombospondin-4 (TSP-4) belongs to the extracellular matrix glycoprotein family of thrombospondins (TSPs). The multidomain, pentameric structure of TSP-4 allows its interactions with numerous extracellular matrix components, proteins and signaling molecules that enable its modulation to various physiological and pathological processes. Characterization of TSP-4 expression under development and pathogenesis of disorders has yielded important insights into mechanisms underlying the unique role of TSP-4 in mediating various processes including cell-cell, cell-extracellular matrix interactions, cell migration, proliferation, tissue remodeling, angiogenesis, and synaptogenesis. Maladaptation of these processes in response to pathological insults and stress can accelerate the development of disorders including skeletal dysplasia, osteoporosis, degenerative joint disease, cardiovascular diseases, tumor progression/metastasis and neurological disorders. Overall, the diverse functions of TSP-4 suggest that it may be a potential marker or therapeutic target for prognosis, diagnosis, and treatment of various pathological conditions upon further investigations. Two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor-based vertical-transport field-effect transistors (VTFETs) - in which the current flows perpendicularly to the substrate surface direction - are in the drive to surmount the stringent downscaling constraints faced by the conventional planar FETs. However, low-power device operation with a sub-60 mV/dec subthreshold swing (SS) at room temperature along with an ultra-scaled channel length remains challenging for 2D semiconductor-based VTFETs. Here, we report steep-slope VTFETs that combine a gate-controllable van der Waals heterojunction and a metal-filamentary threshold switch (TS), featuring a vertical transport channel thinner than 5 nm and sub-thermionic turn-on characteristics. The integrated TS-VTFETs were realised with efficient current switching behaviours, exhibiting a current modulation ratio exceeding 1 × 10 8 and an average sub-60 mV/dec SS over 6 decades of drain current. The proposed TS-VTFETs with excellent area- and energy-efficiency could help to tackle the performance degradation-device downscaling dilemma faced by logic transistor technologies., (© 2024. The mean transit time (MTT) is a good indicator of water cycle processes. We know little about the MTT of different water bodies within the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum (SPAC) in the subtropical monsoon region. We estimated the MTT of stratified soil water at different depths as well as the xylem water and leaf water in typical Cinnamomum camphora woodland located in Changsha City from March 2017 to October 2019. The main methods used in this study included the stable isotope technology, the linear mixed model and the sine wave fitting method. The results showed that the stable isotopes were more depleted in summer and enriched in winter for different water bodies within the SPAC. The δ 2 H values of soil water gradually decreased as depth increased. The δ 2 H values of xylem water closely resembled those of soil water, but the δ 2 H values of leaf water were more positive and exhibited larger variation. Results of the linear mixed model indicated that the lower MTT values of soil water and plant water occurred between June and September, while the higher values were often observed around January and from April to May. The precipitation replenishment exhibited a significant negative correlation with the MTT. The MTT of soil water generally increased with depth, although preferential flow could enhance the replenishment of deeper soil water and subsequently reduce the MTT. The mean MTT values of xylem water and leaf water were similar. Results of the sine wave fitting method showed that the young water fraction ( F yw ) of soil water gradually decreased as depth increased, while the MTT of soil water gradually increased as depth increased. The F yw and MTT of xylem water were lower and higher than those of leaf water, respectively. Both the mean MTT values of soil water based on the linear mixed model or the sine wave fitting method increased from the surface to the deeper soil layers. The former exhibited a smaller variation range and the latter showed a larger variation range. The mean MTT value of xylem water based on the linear mixed model was 2.4 days less than that of leaf water, while the MTT value of xylem water in the sine wave fitting method was 87.4 days higher than that of leaf water. These differences may be due to the parameterization of "new/young water", the uncertainty of results, and the effect of evaporative fractionation. This study contributes to a better understanding of water transport and consumption processes within the SPAC and provides valuable insights for agricultural production and water resources management in the subtropical monsoon region.

Reversible control of ferroelectric polarization is essential to overcome the heterocatalytic kinetic limitation. This can be achieved by creating a surface with switchable electron density; however, owing to the rigidity of traditional ferroelectric oxides, achieving polarization reversal in piezocatalytic processes remains challenging. Herein, sub-nanometer-sized Hf 0.5 Zr 0.5 O 2 (HZO) nanowires with a polymer-like flexibility are synthesized. Oxygen K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy and negative spherical aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy reveal an orthorhombic (Pca2 1 ) ferroelectric phase of the HZO sub-nanometer wires (SNWs). The ferroelectric polarization of the flexible HZO SNWs can be easily switched by slight external vibration, resulting in dynamic modulation of the binding energy of adsorbates and thus breaking the "scaling relationship" during piezocatalysis. Consequently, the as-synthesized ultrathin HZO nanowires display superb water-splitting activity, with H 2 production rate of 25687 µmol g -1  h -1 under 40 kHz ultrasonic vibration, which is 235 and 41 times higher than those of non-ferroelectric hafnium oxides and rigid BaTiO 3 nanoparticles, respectively. Gene-knockout pigs have important applications in agriculture and medicine. Compared with CRISPR/Cas9 and cytosine base editing (CBE) technologies, adenine base editing (ABE) shows better safety and accuracy in gene modification. However, because of the characteristics of gene sequences, the ABE system cannot be widely used in gene knockout. Alternative splicing of mRNA is an important biological mechanism in eukaryotes for the formation of proteins with different functional activities. The splicing apparatus recognizes conserved sequences of the 5' end splice donor and 3' end splice acceptor motifs of introns in pre-mRNA that can trigger exon skipping, leading to the production of new functional proteins, or causing gene inactivation through frameshift mutations. This study aimed to construct a MSTN knockout pig by inducing exon skipping with the aid of the ABE system to expand the application of the ABE system for the preparation of knockout pigs. In this study, first, we constructed ABEmaxAW and ABE8eV106W plasmid vectors and found that their editing efficiencies at the targets were at least sixfold and even 260-fold higher than that of ABEmaxAW by contrasting the editing efficiencies at the gene targets of endogenous CD163, IGF2, and MSTN in pigs. Subsequently, we used the ABE8eV106W system to realize adenine base (the base of the antisense strand is thymine) editing of the conserved splice donor sequence (5'-GT) of intron 2 of the porcine MSTN gene. A porcine single-cell clone carrying a homozygous mutation (5'-GC) in the conserved sequence (5'-GT) of the intron 2 splice donor of the MSTN gene was successfully generated after drug selection. Unfortunately, the MSTN gene was not expressed and, therefore, could not be characterized at this level. No detectable genomic off-target edits were identified by Sanger sequencing. In this study, we verified that the ABE8eV106W vector had higher editing efficiency and could expand the editing scope of ABE. Additionally, we successfully achieved the precise modification of the alternative splice acceptor of intron 2 of the porcine MSTN gene, which may provide a new strategy for gene knockout in pigs., (© 2023. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common malignancies of the digestive tract, with the annual incidence and mortality increasing consistently. Oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy is a preferred therapeutic regimen for patients with advanced CRC. However, most patients will inevitably develop resistance to oxaliplatin. Many studies have reported that non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), such as microRNAs, long non-coding RNAs, and circular RNAs, are extensively involved in cancer progression. Moreover, emerging evidence has revealed that ncRNAs mediate chemoresistance to oxaliplatin by transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulation, and by epigenetic modification. In this review, we summarize the mechanisms by which ncRNAs regulate the initiation and development of CRC chemoresistance to oxaliplatin. Furthermore, we investigate the clinical application of ncRNAs as promising biomarkers for liquid CRC biopsy. Aims: Long non-coding RNA HOXA11-AS participated in heart disease. In this study, we aim to evaluate the potential roles of HOXA11-AS in atherosclerosis and its underlying mechanisms., Methods and Results: The expression levels of HOXA11-AS in ox-LDL-treated HUVECs and arch tissues of high-fat diet-fed ApoE -/- mice (n = 10) were assessed by qRT-PCR. The effects of HOXA11-AS knockdown on the development of atherosclerosis were evaluated using in vitro and in vivo models. Luciferase reporter and RNA immunoprecipitation (RIP) assays verified the potential relationships between HOXA11-AS or ROCK1 and miR-515-5p. The interactive roles between HOXA11-AS and miR-515-5p and between miR-515-5p and ROCK1 were further characterized in ox-LDL-treated HUVECs. Our data showed that HOXA11-AS was significantly up-regulated (P < 0.001), whereas miR-515-5p was dramatically down-regulated in AS mice tissues (P < 0.001) and ox-LDL-treated HUVECs (P < 0.01). Ox-LDL could induce endothelial injuries by inhibiting cell proliferation (P < 0.001) and SOD synthesis (P < 0.001), promoting apoptosis (P < 0.01), ROS (P < 0.001), and MDA production (P < 0.001), increasing Bax (P < 0.001) and cleaved Caspase-3 (P < 0.001), and decreasing Bcl-2 (P < 0.001) and phosphorylated eNOS (P < 0.01). HOXA11-AS knockdown attenuated endothelial injuries via increasing eNOS phosphorylation. Luciferase assay and RIP results confirmed that miR-515-5p is directly bound to HOXA11-AS and ROCK1. HOXA11-AS promoted ox-LDL-induced HUVECs injury by directly inhibiting miR-515-5p from increasing ROCK1 expression and subsequently decreasing the expression and phosphorylation of eNOS. MiR-515-5p mimics could partially reverse the effects of HOXA11-AS knockdown., Conclusions: HOXA11-AS contributed to atherosclerotic injuries by directly regulating the miR-515-5p/ROCK1 axis. Electrical tuning of second-order nonlinearity in optical materials is attractive to strengthen and expand the functionalities of nonlinear optical technologies, though its implementation remains elusive. Here, we report the electrically tunable second-order nonlinearity in atomically thin ReS 2 flakes benefiting from their distorted 1T crystal structure and interlayer charge transfer. Enabled by the efficient electrostatic control of the few-atomic-layer ReS 2 , we show that second harmonic generation (SHG) can be induced in odd-number-layered ReS 2 flakes which are centrosymmetric and thus without intrinsic SHG. Moreover, the SHG can be precisely modulated by the electric field, reversibly switching from almost zero to an amplitude more than 1 order of magnitude stronger than that of the monolayer MoS 2 . For the even-number-layered ReS 2 flakes with the intrinsic SHG, the external electric field could be leveraged to enhance the SHG. We further perform the first-principles calculations which suggest that the modification of in-plane second-order hyperpolarizability by the redistributed interlayer-transferring charges in the distorted 1T crystal structure underlies the electrically tunable SHG in ReS 2 . With its active SHG tunability while using the facile electrostatic control, our work may further expand the nonlinear optoelectronic functions of two-dimensional materials for developing electrically controllable nonlinear optoelectronic devices.

Doped HfO 2 thin films, which exhibit robust ferroelectricity even with aggressive thickness scaling, could potentially enable ultralow-power logic and memory devices. The ferroelectric properties of such materials are strongly intertwined with the voltage-cycling-induced electrical and structural changes, leading to wake-up and fatigue effects. Such field-cycling-dependent behaviors are crucial to evaluate the reliability of HfO 2 -based functional devices; however, its genuine nature remains elusive. Herein, we demonstrate the coupling mechanism between the dynamic change of the interfacial layer and wake-up/fatigue phenomena in ferroelectric Hf 1- x Zr x O 2 (HZO) thin films. Comprehensive atomic-resolution microscopy studies have revealed that the interfacial layer between the HZO and neighboring nonoxide electrode experienced a thickness/composition evolution during electrical cycling. Two theoretical models associated with the depolarization field are adopted, giving consistent results with the thickening of the interfacial layer during electrical cycling. Furthermore, we found that the electrical properties of the HZO devices can be manipulated by controlling the interface properties, e.g., through the choice of electrode match and hybrid cycling process. Our results unambiguously reveal the relationship between the interfacial layer and field-cycling behaviors in HZO, which would further permit the reliability improvement in HZO-based ferroelectric devices through interface engineering.

In-memory computing featuring a radical departure from the von Neumann architecture is promising to substantially reduce the energy and time consumption for data-intensive computation. With the increasing challenges facing silicon complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology, developing in-memory computing hardware would require a different platform to deliver significantly enhanced functionalities at the material and device level. Here, we explore a dual-gate two-dimensional ferroelectric field-effect transistor (2D FeFET) as a basic device to form both nonvolatile logic gates and artificial synapses, addressing in-memory computing simultaneously in digital and analog spaces. Through diversifying the electrostatic behaviors in 2D transistors with the dual-ferroelectric-coupling effect, rich logic functionalities including linear (AND, OR) and nonlinear (XNOR) gates were obtained in unipolar (MoS 2 ) and ambipolar (MoTe 2 ) FeFETs. Combining both types of 2D FeFETs in a heterogeneous platform, an important computation circuit, i.e., a half-adder, was successfully constructed with an area-efficient two-transistor structure. Furthermore, with the same device structure, several key synaptic functions are shown at the device level, and an artificial neural network is simulated at the system level, manifesting its potential for neuromorphic computing. These findings highlight the prospects of dual-gate 2D FeFETs for the development of multifunctional in-memory computing hardware capable of both digital and analog computation.

Developing nano-ferroelectric materials with excellent piezoelectric performance for piezocatalysts used in water splitting is highly desired but also challenging, especially with respect to reaching large piezo-potentials that fully align with required redox levels. Herein, heteroepitaxial strain in BaTiO 3 nanoparticles with a designed porous structure is successfully induced by engineering their surface reconstruction to dramatically enhance their piezoelectricity. The strain coherence can be maintained throughout the nanoparticle bulk, resulting in a significant increase of the BaTiO 3 tetragonality and thus its piezoelectricity. Benefiting from high piezoelectricity, the as-synthesized blue-colored BaTiO 3 nanoparticles possess a superb overall water-splitting activity, with H 2 production rates of 159 μmol g -1  h -1 , which is almost 130 times higher than that of the pristine BaTiO 3 nanoparticles. Thus, this work provides a generic approach for designing highly efficient piezoelectric nanomaterials by strain engineering that can be further extended to various other perovskite oxides, including SrTiO 3 , thereby enhancing their potential for piezoelectric catalysis., (© 2021 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Semiconductor technology, which is rapidly evolving, is poised to enter a new era for which revolutionary innovations are needed to address fundamental limitations on material and working principle level. 2D semiconductors inherently holding novel properties at the atomic limit show great promise to tackle challenges imposed by traditional bulk semiconductor materials. Synergistic combination of 2D semiconductors with functional ferroelectrics further offers new working principles, and is expected to deliver massively enhanced device performance for existing complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technologies and add unprecedented applications for next-generation electronics. Herein, recent demonstrations of novel device concepts based on 2D semiconductor/ferroelectric heterostructures are critically reviewed covering their working mechanisms, device construction, applications, and challenges. In particular, emerging opportunities of CMOS-process-compatible 2D semiconductor/ferroelectric transistor structure devices for the development of a rich variety of applications are discussed, including beyond-Boltzmann transistors, nonvolatile memories, neuromorphic devices, and reconfigurable nanodevices such as p-n homojunctions and self-powered photodetectors. It is concluded that 2D semiconductor/ferroelectric heterostructures, as an emergent heterogeneous platform, could drive many more exciting innovations for modern electronics, beyond the capability of ubiquitous silicon systems., (© 2021 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Van der Waals (vdW) thio- and seleno-phosphates have recently gained considerable attention for the use as "active" dielectrics in two-dimensional/quasi-two-dimensional electronic devices. Bulk ionic conductivity in these materials has been identified as a key factor for the control of their electronic properties. However, direct evidence of specific ion species' migration at the nanoscale, particularly under electric fields, and its impact on material properties has been elusive. Here, we report on direct evidence of a phase-selective anisotropic Cu-ion-hopping mechanism in copper indium thiophosphate (CuInP 2 S 6 ) through detailed scanning probe microscopy measurements. A two-step Cu-hopping path including a first intralayer hopping (in-plane) and second interlayer hopping (out-of-plane) crossing the vdW gap is unveiled. Evidence of electrically controlled Cu ion migration is further verified by nanoscale energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) mapping. These findings offer new insight into anisotropic ionic manipulation in layered vdW ferroelectric/dielectric materials for emergent vdW electronic device design.

Interfaces in heterostructures have been a key point of interest in condensed-matter physics for decades owing to a plethora of distinctive phenomena-such as rectification 1 , the photovoltaic effect 2 , the quantum Hall effect 3 and high-temperature superconductivity 4 -and their critical roles in present-day technical devices. However, the symmetry modulation at interfaces and the resultant effects have been largely overlooked. Here we show that a built-in electric field that originates from band bending at heterostructure interfaces induces polar symmetry therein that results in emergent functionalities, including piezoelectricity and pyroelectricity, even though the component materials are centrosymmetric. We study classic interfaces-namely, Schottky junctions-formed by noble metal and centrosymmetric semiconductors, including niobium-doped strontium titanium oxide crystals, niobium-doped titanium dioxide crystals, niobium-doped barium strontium titanium oxide ceramics, and silicon. The built-in electric field in the depletion region induces polar structures in the semiconductors and generates substantial piezoelectric and pyroelectric effects. In particular, the pyroelectric coefficient and figure of merit of the interface are over one order of magnitude larger than those of conventional bulk polar materials. Our study enriches the functionalities of heterostructure interfaces, offering a distinctive approach to realizing energy transduction beyond the conventional limitation imposed by intrinsic symmetry.

Introduction: Chest CT is thought to be sensitive but less specific in diagnosing the 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19). The diagnostic value of CT is unclear. We aimed to compare the performance of CT and initial RT-PCR for clinically suspected COVID-19 patients outside the epicentre-Wuhan, China., Materials and Methods: Patients clinically suspected of COVID-19 infection who underwent initial RT-PCR and chest CT at the same time were retrospectively enrolled. Two radiologists with specific training reviewed the CT images independently and final diagnoses of the presence or absence of COVID-19 was reached by consensus. With serial RT-PCR as reference standard, the performance of initial RT-PCR and chest CT was analysed. A strategy of combining initial RT-PCR and chest CT was analysed to study the additional benefit., Results: 82 patients admitted to hospital between Jan 10, 2020 to Feb 28, 2020 were enrolled. 34 COVID-19 and 48 non-COVID-19 patients were identified by serial RT-PCR. The sensitivity, specificity was 79% (27/34) and 100% (48/48) for initial RT-PCR and 77% (26/34) and 96% (46/48) for chest CT. The image readers had a good interobserver agreement with Cohen's kappa of 0.69. No statistical difference was found in the diagnostic performance between initial RT-PCR and chest CT. The comprehensive strategy had a higher sensitivity of 94% (32/34)., Conclusions: Initial RT-PCR and chest CT had comparable diagnostic performance in identification of suspected COVID-19 patients outside the epidemic center. Neuromorphic visual sensory and memory systems, which can perceive, process, and memorize optical information, represent core technology for artificial intelligence and robotics with autonomous navigation. An optoelectronic synapse with an elegant integration of biometric optical sensing and synaptic learning functions can be a fundamental element for the hardware-implementation of such systems. Here, we report a class of ferroelectric field-effect memristive transistors made of a two-dimensional WS 2 semiconductor atop a ferroelectric PbZr 0.2 Ti 0.8 O 3 (PZT) thin film for optoelectronic synaptic devices. The WS 2 channel exhibits voltage- and light-controllable memristive switching, dependent on the optically and electrically tunable ferroelectric domain patterns in the underlying PZT layer. These devices consequently show the emulation of optically driven synaptic functionalities including both short- and long-term plasticity as well as the implementation of brainlike learning rules. Integration of these rich synaptic functionalities into one single artificial optoelectronic device could allow the development of future neuromorphic electronics capable of optical information sensing and learning.

The spinal dorsal horn is the first relay structure coding for pain transmission and modulation. Previous anatomical and electrophysiological studies have examined spinal dorsal horn circuit connections and network activity. Further work is required to understand spinal cord sensory information processing that underlies pathological neuropathic pain states. Our previous studies suggest that peripheral nerve injury enhances presynaptic excitatory input onto spinal superficial dorsal horn neurons, which in turn contributes to pathologic nociception. The potential changes in local postsynaptic circuits in the dorsal horn that lead to pathologically heightened behavioral responses to pain remain largely unexplored. We combined whole-cell electrophysiological recordings with laser-scanning photostimulation to test whether peripheral nerve injury in the spinal nerve ligation (SNL) mouse model of neuropathic pain leads to alterations in the functional connectivity of spinal cord circuits including lamina II excitatory interneurons. Here we show that SNL enhances excitation and decreases inhibition to lamina II excitatory interneurons along with their increased glutamate-evoked excitability. The enhanced excitatory postsynaptic input and connectivity evoked by SNL eventually return to normal levels concurrently with the resolution of the neuropathic pain states. The physiological pattern highly correlates with mouse pain behaviors following SNL, supporting a neurophysiological mechanism of central sensitization and neuropathic pain that is functionally localized to the spinal dorsal horn. Together, these data support that SNL induces functional changes in synaptic input and connectivity to lamina II excitatory interneurons that code for pain perception, and thus provide new insights into the mechanism and locus of pain hypersensitivity., (Copyright © 2019 Gong et al.)

Ferroelectric tunnel junction (FTJ) based memristors exhibiting continuous electric field controllable resistance states have been considered promising candidates for future high-density memories and advanced neuromorphic computational architectures. However, the use of rigid single crystal substrate and high temperature growth of the epitaxial FTJ thin films constitutes the main obstacles to using this kind of heterostructure in flexible computing devices. Here, we report the integration of centimeter-scale single crystalline FTJs on flexible plastic substrates, by water-etching based epitaxial oxide membrane lift-off and the following transfer. The resulting highly flexible FTJ membranes retain the single-crystalline structure along with stable and switchable ferroelectric polarization as the grown-on single crystal substrate state. We show that the obtained flexible memristors, i.e., FTJs on plastic substrates, present high speed and low voltage mediated memristive behaviors with resistance changes over 500% and are stable against shape change. This work is an essential step toward the realization of epitaxial ultrathin ferroelectric oxide film-based electronics on large-area, flexible, and affordable substrates.

The light control of nonvolatile nanoscale memories could represent a fundamental step toward novel optoelectronic devices with memory and logic functionalities. However, most of the proposed devices exhibit insufficient control in terms of the reversibility, data retention, photosensitivity, limited-photoactive area, and so forth. Here, in a proof-of-concept work, we demonstrate the use of the tip-enhanced bulk photovoltaic (BPV) effect to realize programmable nanoscopic writing of nonphotoactive electronic devices by light control. We show that electronic properties of solid-state memory devices can be reversibly and location-precisely manipulated in the nanoscale using the BPV effect in combination with the nanoscale contact connection, that is, atomic force microscopy (AFM) probe technique in this work. More than 10 5 % reversible switching of tunneling electroresistance of ferroelectric tunnel junctions is exclusively achieved by light control. Using the same light-controlled AFM probe technique, we also present precise nanoscopic and multiple-state writing of LaAlO 3 /SrTiO 3 two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG)-based field-effect transistors. The tip-enhanced BPV effect can offer a novel avenue for reversible and multistate light control of a wide range of electronic memory devices in the nanoscale and may lead to more sophisticated functionalities in optoelectronic applications.

Up-regulation of thrombospondin-4 (TSP4) or voltage-gated calcium channel subunit α 2 δ 1 (Ca v α 2 δ 1 ) proteins in the spinal cord contributes to neuropathic pain development through an unidentified mechanism. We have previously shown that TSP4 interacts with Ca v α 2 δ 1 to promote excitatory synaptogenesis and the development of chronic pain states. However, the TSP4 determinants responsible for these changes are not known. Here, we tested the hypothesis that the Ca v α 2 δ 1 -binding domains of TSP4 are synaptogenic and pronociceptive. We mapped the major Ca v α 2 δ 1 -binding domains of TSP4 within the coiled-coil and epidermal growth factor (EGF)-like domains in vitro Intrathecal injection of TSP4 fragment proteins containing the EGF-like domain (EGF-LIKE) into naïve rodents was sufficient for inducing behavioral hypersensitivity similar to that produced by an equal molar dose of full-length TSP4. Gabapentin, a drug that binds to Ca v α 2 δ 1 , blocked EGF-LIKE-induced behavioral hypersensitivity in a dose-dependent manner, supporting the notion that EGF-LIKE interacts with Ca v α 2 δ 1 and thereby mediates behavioral hypersensitivity. This notion was further supported by our findings that a peptide within EGF-LIKE (EGFD355-369) could block TSP4- or Ca v α 2 δ 1 -induced behavioral hypersensitivity after intrathecal injections. Furthermore, only TSP4 proteins that contained EGF-LIKE could promote excitatory synaptogenesis between sensory and spinal cord neurons, which could be blocked by peptide EGFD355-369. Together, these findings indicate that EGF-LIKE is the molecular determinant that mediates aberrant excitatory synaptogenesis and chronic pain development. Voltage-gated calcium channels (VGCCs) play important roles in physiological functions including the modulation of neurotransmitter release, neuronal network activities, intracellular signalling pathways and gene expression. Some pathological conditions, including nerve injuries, can cause the dysregulation of VGCCs and their subunits. This in turn can lead to a functional maladaptation of VGCCs and their subunits, which can contribute to the development of disorders such as pain sensations. This review has summarized recent findings related to maladaptive changes in the dysregulated VGCC α 2 δ 1 subunit (Ca v α 2 δ 1 ) with a focus on exploring the mechanisms underlying the contribution of Ca v α 2 δ 1 to pain signal transduction. At least under neuropathic pain conditions, the dysregulated Ca v α 2 δ 1 can modulate VGCC functions as well as other plasticity changes. The latter includes abnormal excitatory synaptogenesis resulting from its interactions with injury-induced extracellular matrix glycoprotein molecule thrombospondins, which is independent of the VGCC functions. Blocking Ca v α 2 δ 1 with gabapentinoids can reverse neuropathic pain significantly with relatively mild side effects, but only in a small population of neuropathic pain patients due to reasons yet to be explored. There are emerging data suggesting that early preventive treatment with gabapentinoids can prevent aberrant excitatory synapse formation and the development of chronic pain. Background and Purpose: Nerve injury induces concurrent up-regulation of the voltage-gated calcium channel subunit Ca v α 2 δ 1 and the extracellular matrix protein thrombospondin-4 (TSP4) in dorsal root ganglia and dorsal spinal cord, leading to the development of a neuropathic pain state. Interactions of these proteins promote aberrant excitatory synaptogenesis that contributes to neuropathic pain state development through unknown mechanisms. We investigated the contributions of Ca v α 2 δ 1 subunits and TSP4 to synaptogenesis, and the pathways involved in vitro, and whether treatment with gabapentin could block this process and pain development in vivo., Experimental Approach: A co-culture system of sensory and spinal cord neurons was used to study the contribution from each protein to synaptogenesis and the pathway(s) involved. Anti-synaptogenic actions of gabapentin were studied in TSP4-injected mice., Key Results: Only presynaptic, but not postsynaptic, Ca v α 2 δ 1 subunits interacted with TSP4 to initiate excitatory synaptogenesis through a pathway modulated by T-type calcium channels. Ca v α 2 δ 1 /TSP4 interactions were not required for maintenance of already formed synapses. In vivo, early, but not delayed, treatment with low-dose gabapentin blocked this pathway and the development of the pain state., Conclusions and Implications: Ca v α 2 δ 1 /TSP4 interactions were critical for the initiation, but not for the maintenance, of abnormal synapse formation between sensory and spinal cord neurons. The alpha2delta-1 subunit (α2δ-1) of voltage-gated calcium channels is a receptor for astrocyte-secreted thrombospondins that promote developmental synaptogenesis. Alpha2delta-1 receptors are upregulated in models of injury-induced peripheral pain and epileptogenic neocortical trauma associated with an enhancement of excitatory synaptic connectivity. These results lead to the hypothesis that overexpression of α2δ-1 alone in neocortex of uninjured transgenic (TG) mice might result in increased excitatory connectivity and consequent cortical hyperexcitability and epileptiform activity. Whole cell recordings from layer V pyramidal neurons in somatosensory cortical slices of TG mice showed increased frequency and amplitude of miniature and spontaneous EPSCs and prolonged bursts of polysynaptic EPSCs. Epileptiform field potentials were evoked in layers II/III and V of brain slices from TG mice, but not controls. Dual immunoreactivity for Vglut-2 and PSD95 showed increased density of close appositions in TG mice compared to controls, suggesting an increased number of excitatory synapses. Video-EEG monitoring showed that 13/13 implanted TG mice aged >P21, but not controls, had frequent abnormal spontaneous epileptiform events, consisting of variable duration, high amplitude bi-hemispheric irregular bursts of delta activity, spikes and sharp waves lasting many seconds, with a variable peak frequency of ~1-3Hz, associated with behavioral arrest. The epileptiform EEG abnormalities and behavioral arrests were reversibly eliminated by treatment with i.p. ethosuximide. Behavioral seizures, consisting of ~15-30s duration episodes of rigid arched tail and head and body extension, followed by loss of balance and falling, frequently occurred in adult TG mice during recovery from isoflurane-induced anesthesia, but were rare in WT mice. Results show that over-expression of α2δ-1 subunits increases cortical excitatory connectivity and leads to neocortical hyperexcitability and epileptiform activity associated with behavioral arrests in adult TG mice. Similar increases in expression of α2δ-1 in models of cortical injury may play an important role in epileptogenesis., Significance: Binding of astrocytic-secreted thrombospondins to their α2δ-1 receptor facilitates excitatory synapse formation and excitatory transmission during cortical development and after injury. Upregulation of α2δ-1 is present in models of injury-induced pain and epileptogenic cortical trauma, along with many other molecular alterations. Here we show that overexpression of α2δ-1 alone in TG mice can enhance excitatory connectivity in neocortex and lead to neural circuit hyperexcitability and episodes of electrographic epileptiform activity, associated with behavioral arrests in transgenic mice. α2δ-1 is the high-affinity receptor for gabapentinoids and a potential target for prophylactic treatment of posttraumatic epilepsy and other disorders in which excessive aberrant excitatory connectivity is a pathophysiological feature., (Published by Elsevier Inc.)

Two novel red phosphors KBaEu(XO 4 ) 3 (X = Mo, W) have been synthesized by high-temperature solid-state reactions and the crystal structures were determined for the first time. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction data reveal that their space groups are C2/c. The crystalline structure is constituted of K/BaO 8 distorted square antiprisms and distorted EuO 8 polyhedra which form chains lying along the c-axis and two kinds of distorted XO 4 tetrahedra. This high disorder of K/Ba which might lower the crystal field symmetry around Eu 3+ results in the high purity of red emission around 615 nm originating from 5 D 0 → 7 F 2 transition under near-ultraviolet (NUV) excitation. With increasing temperature, the luminescence of KBaEu(XO 4 ) 3 (X = Mo, W) phosphors decreases almost linearly with subtle alteration for the CIE coordinate. As the temperature reaches 550 K, the red emission intensity decreases to 37.3% and 50.7% of that at 300 K for KBaEu(MoO 4 ) 3 and KBaEu(WO 4 ) 3 , respectively. The analysis of the decay curves of the 5 D 0 → 7 F 2 emission at variable temperatures indicates the weak cross relaxation and non-radiative energy transfer between Eu 3+ ions. These results demonstrate that the investigated phosphors are attractive for application in high power NUV excited white LEDs.

Painful nerve injury disrupts Ca 2+ signaling in primary sensory neurons by elevating plasma membrane Ca 2+ -ATPase (PMCA) function and depressing sarco-endoplasmic reticulum Ca 2+ -ATPase (SERCA) function, which decreases endoplasmic reticulum (ER) Ca 2+ stores and stimulates store-operated Ca 2+ entry (SOCE). The extracellular matrix glycoprotein thrombospondin-4 (TSP4), which is increased after painful nerve injury, decreases Ca 2+ current (I Ca ) through high-voltage-activated Ca 2+ channels and increases I Ca through low-voltage-activated Ca 2+ channels in dorsal root ganglion neurons, which are events similar to the effect of nerve injury. We therefore examined whether TSP4 plays a critical role in injury-induced disruption of intracellular Ca 2+ signaling. We found that TSP4 increases PMCA activity, inhibits SERCA, depletes ER Ca 2+ stores, and enhances store-operated Ca 2+ influx. Injury-induced changes of SERCA and PMCA function are attenuated in TSP4 knock-out mice. Effects of TSP4 on intracellular Ca 2+ signaling are attenuated in voltage-gated Ca 2+ channel α 2 δ 1 subunit (Ca v α 2 δ 1 ) conditional knock-out mice and are also Protein Kinase C (PKC) signaling dependent. These findings suggest that TSP4 elevation may contribute to the pathogenesis of chronic pain following nerve injury by disrupting intracellular Ca 2+ signaling via interacting with the Ca v α 2 δ 1 and the subsequent PKC signaling pathway. Domain walls, which are intrinsically two dimensional nano-objects exhibiting nontrivial electronic and magnetic behaviours, have been proven to play a crucial role in photovoltaic properties of ferroelectrics. Despite this recognition, the electronic properties of domain walls under illumination until now have been accessible only to macroscopic studies and their effects upon the conduction of photovoltaic current still remain elusive. The lack of understanding hinders the developing of nanoscale devices based on ferroelectric domain walls. Here, we directly characterize the local photovoltaic and photoconductive properties of 71° domain walls on BiFeO 3 thin films with a nanoscale resolution. Local photovoltaic current, proven to be driven by the bulk photovoltaic effect, has been probed over the whole illuminated surface by using a specially designed photoelectric atomic force microscopy and found to be significantly enhanced at domain walls. Additionally, spatially resolved photoconductive current distribution reveals a higher density of excited carriers at domain walls in comparison with domains. Our measurements demonstrate that domain wall enhanced photovoltaic current originates from its high conduction rather than the internal electric field. This photoconduction facilitated local photovoltaic current is likely to be a universal property of topological defects in ferroelectric semiconductors.

Experience alters cortical networks through neural plasticity mechanisms. During a developmental critical period, the most dramatic consequence of occluding vision through one eye (monocular deprivation) is a rapid loss of excitatory synaptic inputs to parvalbumin-expressing (PV) inhibitory neurons in visual cortex. Subsequent cortical disinhibition by reduced PV cell activity allows for excitatory ocular dominance plasticity. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying critical period synaptic plasticity are unclear. Here we show that brief monocular deprivation during the critical period downregulates neuregulin-1(NRG1)/ErbB4 signaling in PV neurons, causing retraction of excitatory inputs to PV neurons. Exogenous NRG1 rapidly restores excitatory inputs onto deprived PV cells through downstream PKC-dependent activation and AMPA receptor exocytosis, thus enhancing PV neuronal inhibition to excitatory neurons. NRG1 treatment prevents the loss of deprived eye visual cortical responsiveness in vivo. In this study, the photosynthetic light response curves were measured for Liquidambar formosana during the leaf senescence from October to December in 2014. The measurements were simulated by a photosynthetic light response model (Ye model) and the conventional non-rectangular hyperbola model, in order to understand the photosynthetic capacity of senescing leaves of L. formosana. The results showed that the light sensitivity of the net photosynthetic rate decreased gra-dually during the leaf senescence. The measured maximum net photosynthetic rate was about 2.88 μmol CO 2 ·m -2 ·s -1 when the leaf color just turned yellow, and dropped to 0.95 μmol CO 2 ·m -2 ·s -1 in the later stage of leaf senescence (8th December). The two photosynthetic light-response models performed well in fitting the observation data, with Ye model being slightly better. Parameters estimated from the two models, such as the maximum net photosynthetic rate, the appa-rent quantum yield, the quantum yield at the light compensation point and the dark respiration rate, all gradually decreased with time, quantitatively describing the decrease in the photosynthetic capacity during the leaf senescence for L. formosana. The senescing leaves of L. formosana maintained positive net photosynthesis rates during the whole senescence, which had positive impact on carbon assimilation in the study area.

Loss of high-voltage-activated (HVA) calcium current (ICa) and gain of low-voltage-activated (LVA) ICa after painful peripheral nerve injury cause elevated excitability in sensory neurons. Nerve injury is also accompanied by increased expression of the extracellular matrix glycoprotein thrombospondin-4 (TSP4), and interruption of TSP4 function can reverse or prevent behavioral hypersensitivity after injury. We therefore investigated TSP4 regulation of ICa in dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons. During depolarization adequate to activate HVA ICa, TSP4 decreases both N- and L-type ICa and the associated intracellular calcium transient. In contrast, TSP4 increases ICa and the intracellular calcium signal after low-voltage depolarization, which we confirmed is due to ICa through T-type channels. These effects are blocked by gabapentin, which ameliorates neuropathic pain by targeting the α2δ1 calcium subunit. Injury-induced changes of HVA and LVA ICa are attenuated in TSP4 knockout mice. In the neuropathic pain model of spinal nerve ligation, TSP4 application did not further regulate ICa of injured DRG neurons. Taken together, these findings suggest that elevated TSP4 after peripheral nerve injury may contribute to hypersensitivity of peripheral sensory systems by decreasing HVA and increasing LVA in DRG neurons by targeting the α2δ1 calcium subunit. Controlling TSP4 overexpression in peripheral sensory neurons may be a target for analgesic drug development for neuropathic pain.

Peripheral nerve injury induces increased expression of thrombospondin-4 (TSP4) in spinal cord and dorsal root ganglia that contributes to neuropathic pain states through unknown mechanisms. Here, we test the hypothesis that TSP4 activates its receptor, the voltage-gated calcium channel Cavα2δ1 subunit (Cavα2δ1), on sensory afferent terminals in dorsal spinal cord to promote excitatory synaptogenesis and central sensitization that contribute to neuropathic pain states. We show that there is a direct molecular interaction between TSP4 and Cavα2δ1 in the spinal cord in vivo and that TSP4/Cavα2δ1-dependent processes lead to increased behavioral sensitivities to stimuli. In dorsal spinal cord, TSP4/Cavα2δ1-dependent processes lead to increased frequency of miniature and amplitude of evoked excitatory post-synaptic currents in second-order neurons as well as increased VGlut2- and PSD95-positive puncta, indicative of increased excitatory synapses. Blockade of TSP4/Cavα2δ1-dependent processes with Cavα2δ1 ligand gabapentin or genetic Cavα2δ1 knockdown blocks TSP4 induced nociception and its pathological correlates. Conversely, TSP4 antibodies or genetic ablation blocks nociception and changes in synaptic transmission in mice overexpressing Cavα2δ1 Importantly, TSP4/Cavα2δ1-dependent processes also lead to similar behavioral and pathological changes in a neuropathic pain model of peripheral nerve injury. Thus, a TSP4/Cavα2δ1-dependent pathway activated by TSP4 or peripheral nerve injury promotes exaggerated presynaptic excitatory input and evoked sensory neuron hyperexcitability and excitatory synaptogenesis, which together lead to central sensitization and pain state development., (© 2016 by The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Inc.)

Trigeminal nerves collecting sensory information from the orofacial area synapse on second-order neurons in the dorsal horn of subnucleus caudalis and cervical C1/C2 spinal cord (Vc/C2, or trigeminocervical complex), which is critical for sensory information processing. Injury to the trigeminal nerves may cause maladaptive changes in synaptic connectivity that plays an important role in chronic pain development. Here we examined whether injury to the infraorbital nerve, a branch of the trigeminal nerves, led to synaptic ultrastructural changes when the injured animals have developed neuropathic pain states. Transmission electron microscopy was used to examine synaptic profiles in Vc/C2 at 3 weeks postinjury, corresponding to the time of peak behavioral hypersensitivity following chronic constriction injury to the infraorbital nerve (CCI-ION). Using established criteria, synaptic profiles were classified as associated with excitatory (R-), inhibitory (F-), and primary afferent (C-) terminals. Each type was counted within the superficial dorsal horn of the Vc/C2 and the means from each rat were compared between sham and injured animals; synaptic contact length was also measured. The overall analysis indicates that rats with orofacial pain states had increased numbers and decreased mean synaptic length of R-profiles within the Vc/C2 superficial dorsal horn (lamina I) 3 weeks post-CCI-ION. Increases in the number of excitatory synapses in the superficial dorsal horn of Vc/C2 could lead to enhanced activation of nociceptive pathways, contributing to the development of orofacial pain states., (© 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

Connections between metals and heterogeneous solid state materials form buried interfaces. These ubiquitous structures play an essential role in determining the performances of many nano- and microdevices. However, the information about the chemistry, structure, and properties of these real interfaces is intrinsically difficult to extract by traditional techniques. Therefore, approaches to efficiently discovering metalized interfaces are in high demand. Here, we demonstrate the transformation of nanoscale metal/oxide interface problems into surface problems through a novel metal-hydrogenation detaching method. We applied this technique to study the thickness dependence in Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 (PZT) ferroelectric thin films, a long-standing interface problem in a model metal/insulator device, and this allowed comprehensive surface analytical techniques to be adapted. A nonstoichiometric interfacial layer of 4.1 nm thick with low mass density, low permittivity, and weak ferroelectricity was quantified at the Pt/PZT interface and attributed to the preferential diffusions among the compositional elements. Targeted interface engineering by Pb rebalance led to a substantial recovery of ferroelectric properties. Our results therefore pave the way to a better understanding of metallized interface in ferroelectric and dielectric nanodevices. We hope that more useful information about metalized interfaces of other solid materials could, analogously, be accessed by surface analytical techniques.

End-pumped by a continuous-wave 976 nm diode laser, efficient 1522 nm laser operation was demonstrated in an Er:Yb:GdAl(3)(BO(3))(4) crystal when a sapphire crystal was used as a heat diffuser. A continuous-wave 1522 nm laser with a maximum output power of 750 mW and slope efficiency of 36% was realized at an absorbed pump power of 4.1 W. The pulse performances of an acousto-optic Q-switched laser with various repetition frequencies were investigated in detail. In a repetition frequency range of 1-10 kHz, 1522 nm pulse lasers with a slope efficiency of about 10%, peak output power at the kilowatt level, and width of about 50 ns were first obtained in an Er:Yb:GdAl(3)(BO(3))(4) crystal pumped by a continuous-wave diode laser. The results indicate that the crystal is a promising gain medium for an actively Q-switched 1.5 μm laser.

Background: Overexpression of the voltage-gated calcium channel (VGCC) alpha-2-delta1 subunit protein (Cav α2 δ1 ) has been shown to cause pain states. However, whether VGCC are involved in pain states driven by abnormal Cav α2 δ1 expression is not known., Methods: Intrathecal injection of N-, P/Q- and L-type VGCC blockers were tested in two models: a transgenic neuronal Cav α2 δ1 overexpression (TG) model with behavioural hypersensitivity and a spinal nerve ligation (SNL) model with Cav α2 δ1 overexpression in sensory pathways and neuropathy pain states., Results: The nociceptive response to mechanical stimuli was significantly attenuated in both models with ω-conotoxin GVIA (an N-type VGCC blocker) and nifedipine (an L-type VGCC blocker), in which ω-conotoxin GVIA appeared more potent than nifedipine. Treatments with ω-agatoxin IVA (P-VGCC blocker), but not ω-conotoxin MVIIC (Q-VGCC blocker) had similar potency in the TG model as the N-type VGCC blocker, while both ω-agatoxin IVA and ω-conotoxin MVIIC had minimal effects in the SNL model compared with controls., Conclusion: These findings suggest that, at the spinal level, N- and L-type VGCC are likely involved in behavioural hypersensitivity states driven by Cav α2 δ1 overexpression. Q-type VGCC has minimal effects in both models. The anti-nociceptive effects of P-type VGCC blocker in the Cav α2 δ1 TG mice, but minimally at the SNL model with presynaptic Cav α2 δ1 up-regulation, suggest that its potential action site(s) is at the post-synaptic and/or supraspinal level. These findings support that N-, L- and P/Q-type VGCC have differential contributions to behavioural hypersensitivity modulated by Cav α2 δ1 dysregulation at the spinal cord level., (© 2014 European Pain Federation - EFIC®)
