Search

Verification is a critical aspect of designing front-end (FE) readout ASICs for High-Energy Physics (HEP) experiments. These ASICs share several similar functional features, resulting in similar verification objectives, which can be addressed using comparable verification strategies. This contribution presents a set of re-usable verification components for addressing common verification tasks, such as clock generation, reset handling, configuration, as well as hit and fault injections. The components were developed as part of the CHIPS initiative and they have been successfully used in the verification of multiple HEP ASICs., Comment: - TWEPP 2024 proceeeding - 5 pages + title page, 2 figures

Human exposure to Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and their presence in indoor and working environments is recognized as a serious health risk, causing impairment of varying severity. Different detecting systems able to monitor VOCs are available in the market, however they have significant limitations for both sensitivity and chemical discrimination capability. During the last years we studied systematically the use of Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) spectroscopy as an alternative, powerful tool for quantifying VOCs in air. We calibrated the method for a set of compounds (styrene, acetone, ethanol and isopropanol) by using both laboratory and portable infrared spectrometers. The aim was to develop a new, real time and highly sensitive sensor system for VOCs monitoring. In this paper, we improve the setup performance testing the feasibility of using a multipass cell with the aim of extending the sensitivity of this sensor system down to the part per milion (ppb) level. Considering that multipass cells are now available also for portable instruments, this study opens the road for the design of new high-resolution devices for environmental monitoring., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures

Sound is usually generated in a medium by an electromechanical vibrating structure. The geometrical size and inertia of the structure set the frequency cutoff in the sound-transduction mechanism and, often, different vibrating structures are necessary to cover the whole range from infrasound to ultrasound. An alternative mechanism without any physical movement of the emitter is the thermoacoustic effect, where sound is produced by Joule heating in a conductive material. Here we show that a single thermoacoustic transducer based on a graphene aerogel can emit ultrabroadband sound from infrasound (1 Hz) to ultrasound (20 MHz), with no harmonic distortion. Since conventional acoustic transducers are frequency band limited due to their transduction mechanism, ultrabroadband graphene aerogels may offer a valid alternative to conventional hi-fi loudspeakers, and infrasound and ultrasound transducers., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1909.08858

We present here a small-scale liquid Helium (LHe) immersion cryostat with an innovative optical setup suitable to work in long wavelength radiation ranges and under applied magnetic field. The cryostat is a multi stage device with several shielding in addition to several optical stages. The system has been designed with an external liquid Nitrogen boiler to reduce the liquid bubbling. The optical and mechanical properties of the optical elements were calculated and optimized for the designed configuration while the optical layout has been simulated and optimized among different configurations based on the geometry of the device. The final design has been optimized for low noise radiation measurements of proximity junction arrays under applied magnetic field in the wavelength range $\lambda$=250-2500 $\mu$m.

An array of superconducting proximity islands has been shown to be highly tunable by electric and magnetic fields. Indeed, a small change in the electric and magnetic field can tune the system from a vortex Mott insulator to a vortex metal. This transition from localized to a non-localized state can occur as soon as the density of the superconducting vortices matches the density of the pinning sites in a non defective structure. The possibility of further modulation of non-localized superconducting states via enhancement of the superconducting order parameter or modulation of the Josephson plasma frequency is discussed. Based on the non-bolometric effects associated with the occurrence of non-equilibrium phenomena in this original superconducting networks we discuss also the possible applications of this array for a conceptually new type of radiation detector.

Photon-phonon coupling holds strong potential for sound and temperature control with light, opening new horizons in detector technology, remote sound generation and signal broadcasting. Here, we report on a novel stereoscopic ultralight converter based on a three dimensional graphene structure 3G-sponge, which exhibits very high absorption, near-to-air density, low inertia, and negligible effective heat capacity. We studied the heat and sound generation under the excitation of electromagnetic waves. 3G-sponge shows exceptional photon to heat and sound transduction efficiency over an enormous frequency range from MHz to PHz. As an application, we present an audio receiver based on a 3G-sponge amplitude demodulation. Our results will lead to a wide range of applications from light-controlled sound sources to broadband high-frequency graphene electronics.

The phase diagrams of correlated systems like cuprates or pnictides high-temperature superconductors are characterized by a topological change of the Fermi surface under continuous variation of an external parameter, the so-called Lifshitz transition. However, the large number of low-temperature instabilities and the interplay of multiple energy scales complicate the study of this phenomenon. Here we first identify the optical signatures of a pressure-induced Lifshitz transition in a clean elemental system, black phosphorus. By applying external pressures above 1.5 GPa, we observe a change in the pressure dependence of the Drude plasma frequency due to the appearance of massless Dirac fermions. At higher pressures, optical signatures of two structural phase transitions are also identified. Our findings suggest that a key fingerprint of the Lifshitz transition in solid state systems, and in absence of structural phase transitions, is a discontinuity of the Drude plasma frequency due to the change of Fermi surface topology.

On the wake of the results obtained so far at the SPARC\_LAB test-facility at the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati (Italy), we are currently investigating the possibility to design and build a new multi-disciplinary user-facility, equipped with a soft X-ray Free Electron Laser (FEL) driven by a $\sim$1 GeV high brightness linac based on plasma accelerator modules. This design study is performed in synergy with the EuPRAXIA design study. In this paper we report about the recent progresses in the on going design study of the new facility.

We perform infrared conductivity measurements on a series of CaCuO$_2$/SrTiO$_3$ heterostructures made by the insulating cuprate CaCuO$_2$ (CCO) and the insulating perovkite SrTiO$_3$ (STO). We estimate the carrier density of various heterostructures, with different level of hole doping from the integral of the optical conductivity and we measure the corresponding degree of correlation by estimating the ratio between the Drude weight and the integral of the infrared spectrum. The analysis demonstrates a large degree of correlation, which increases as the doping is reduced. The experimental results can be reproduced by Dynamical Mean-Field Theory calculations which strongly support the role of correlations in the CCO/STO heterostructures and their similarities with the most common cuprate superconductors. Our results suggest that cuprate superconductors can be looked at as natural superlattices, where the properties of the CuO$_2$ conducting planes and charge reservoir blocks can be completely disentangled., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) we report the first band dispersions and distinct features of the bulk Fermi surface (FS) in the paramagnetic metallic phase of the prototypical metal-insulator transition material V$_2$O$_3$. Along the $c$-axis we observe both an electron pocket and a triangular hole-like FS topology, showing that both V 3$d$ $a_{1g}$ and $e_g^{\pi}$ states contribute to the FS. These results challenge the existing correlation-enhanced crystal field splitting theoretical explanation for the transition mechanism and pave the way for the solution of this mystery., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures plus supplement 12 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

LiOsO$_3$ has been recently identified as the first unambiguous "ferroelectric metal", experimentally realizing a prediction from 1965 by Anderson and Blount. In this work, we investigate the metallic state in LiOsO$_3$ by means of infrared spectroscopy supplemented by Density Functional Theory and Dynamical Mean Field Theory calculations. Our measurements and theoretical calculations clearly show that LiOsO$_3$ is a very bad metal with a small quasiparticle weight, close to a Mott-Hubbard localization transition. The agreement between experiments and theory allows us to ascribe all the relevant features in the optical conductivity to strong electron-electron correlations within the $t_{2g}$ manifold of the osmium atoms., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

We present an experimental and theoretical study exploring surface effects on the evolution of the metal-insulator transition in the model Mott-Hubbard compound Cr-doped V$_2$O$_3$. We find a microscopic domain formation that is clearly affected by the surface crystallographic orientation. Using scanning photoelectron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, we find that surface defects act as nucleation centers for the formation of domains at the temperature-induced isostructural transition and favor the formation of microscopic metallic regions. A density functional theory plus dynamical mean field theory study of different surface terminations shows that the surface reconstruction with excess vanadyl cations leads to doped, and hence more metallic surface states, explaining our experimental observations., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The control of non-equilibrium phenomena in complex solids is an important research frontier, encompassing new effects like light induced superconductivity. Here, we show that coherent optical excitation of molecular vibrations in the organic conductor K3C60 can induce a non-equilibrium state with the optical properties of a superconductor. A transient gap in the real part of the optical conductivity and a low-frequency divergence of the imaginary part are measured for base temperatures far above equilibrium Tc=20 K. These findings underscore the role of coherent light fields in inducing emergent order., Comment: 40 pages, 23 figures

Vanadium sesquioxide V2O3 is considered a textbook example of Mott-Hubbard physics. In this paper we present an extended optical study of its whole temperature/doping phase diagram as obtained by doping the pure material with M=Cr or Ti atoms (V1-xMx)2O3. We reveal that its thermodynamically stable metallic and insulating phases, although macroscopically equivalent, show very different low-energy electrodynamics. The Cr and Ti doping drastically change both the antiferromagnetic gap and the paramagnetic metallic properties. A slight chromium content induces a mesoscopic electronic phase separation, while the pure compound is characterized by short-lived quasiparticles at high temperature. This study thus provides a new comprehensive scenario of the Mott-Hubbard physics in the prototype compound V2O3.

We have studied the optical properties of four (LaNiO$_3$)$_n$/(LaMnO$_3$)$_2$ superlattices (SL) ($n$=2, 3, 4, 5) on SrTiO$_3$ substrates. We have measured the reflectivity at temperatures from 20 K to 400 K, and extracted the optical conductivity through a fitting procedure based on a Kramers-Kronig consistent Lorentz-Drude model. With increasing LaNiO$_3$ thickness, the SLs undergo an insulator-to-metal transition (IMT) that is accompanied by the transfer of spectral weight from high to low frequency. The presence of a broad mid-infrared band, however, shows that the optical conductivity of the (LaNiO$_3$)$_n$/(LaMnO$_3$)$_2$ SLs is not a linear combination of the LaMnO$_3$ and LaNiO$_3$ conductivities. One of the pivotal questions in the physics of high-temperature superconductors is whether the low-energy dynamics of the charge carriers is mediated by bosons with a characteristic timescale. This issue has remained elusive since electronic correlations are expected to dramatically speed up the electron-boson scattering processes, confining them to the very femtosecond timescale that is hard to access even with state-of-the-art ultrafast techniques. Here we simultaneously push the time resolution and the frequency range of transient reflectivity measurements up to an unprecedented level that enables us to directly observe the 16 fs build-up of the effective electron-boson interaction in hole-doped copper oxides. This extremely fast timescale is in agreement with numerical calculations based on the t-J model and the repulsive Hubbard model, in which the relaxation of the photo-excited charges is achieved via inelastic scattering with short-range antiferromagnetic excitations., Comment: to appear in Nature Physics

We report an infrared spectroscopy study of a 200 nm thick FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ film grown on LaAlO$_3$ with T$_c$=13.7 K. We analyze the 20 K normal state absolute reflectance R$_N$ measured over a broad infrared range and the reflectance ratio R$_S$/R$_N$, R$_S$ being the superconducting state reflectance, measured at 6 K in the terahertz range down to 12 cm$^{-1}$. We show that the normal state model conductivity is given by two Drude components, one of which much broader and intense than the other. In the superconducting state, we find that a gap $\Delta$=37$\pm$3 cm$^{-1}$ opens up in the narrow Drude band only, while the broad Drude band results to be ungapped, at least in the explored spectral range. The optical properties of a V4O7 single crystal have been investigated from the high temperature metallic phase down to the low temperature antiferromagnetic insulating one. The temperature dependent behavior of the optical conductivity across the metal-insulator transition (MIT) can be explained in a polaronic scenario. Charge carriers form strongly localized polarons in the insulating phase as suggested by a far-infrared charge gap abruptly opening at T_MIT = 237 K. In the metallic phase instead the presence of a Drude term is indicative of fairly delocalized charges with a moderately renormalized mass m* = 5m_e. The electronic spectral weight is almost recovered on an energy scale of 1 eV, which is much narrower compared to VO2 and V2O3 cases. Those findings suggest that electron-lattice interaction rather than electronic correlation is the driving force for V4O7 metal-insulator transition., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

It has been recently reported (S. Lee et al., Nature Materials 12, 392, 2013) that superlattices where layers of the 8% Co-doped BaFe2As2 superconducting pnictide are intercalated with non superconducting ultrathin layers of either SrTiO3 or of oxygen-rich BaFe2As2, can be used to control flux pinning, thereby increasing critical fields and currents, without significantly affecting the critical temperature of the pristine superconducting material. However, little is known about the electron properties of these systems. Here we investigate the electrodynamics of these superconducting pnictide superlattices in the normal and superconducting state by using infrared reflectivity, from THz to visible range. We find that multi-gap structure of these superlattices is preserved, whereas some significant changes are observed in their electronic structure with respect to those of the original pnictide. Our results suggest that possible attempts to further increase the flux pinning may lead to a breakdown of the pnictide superconducting properties., Comment: 4 pages, two figures

La1.8-xEu0.2SrxCuO4 (LESCO) is the member of the 214 family which exhibits the largest intervals among the structural, charge ordering (CO), magnetic, and superconducting transition temperatures. By using new dc transport measurements and data in the literature we construct the phase diagram of LESCO between x = 0.8 and 0.20. This phase diagram has been further probed in ac, by measuring the optical conductivity {\sigma}1({\omega}) of three single crystals with x = 0.11, 0.125, and 0.16 between 10 and 300 K in order to associate the extra-Drude peaks often observed in the 214 family with a given phase. The far-infrared peak we detect in underdoped LESCO is the hardest among them, survives up to room temperature and is associated with charge localization rather than with ordering. At the CO transition for the commensurate doping x = 0.125 instead the extra-Drude peak hardens and a pseudogap opens in {\sigma}1({\omega}), approximately as wide as the maximum superconducting gap of LSCO., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

This report describes the scientific aims and potentials as well as the preliminary technical design of IRIDE, an innovative tool for multi-disciplinary investigations in a wide field of scientific, technological and industrial applications. IRIDE will be a high intensity 'particle factory', based on a combination of a high duty cycle radio-frequency superconducting electron linac and of high energy lasers. Conceived to provide unique research possibilities for particle physics, for condensed matter physics, chemistry and material science, for structural biology and industrial applications, IRIDE will open completely new research possibilities and advance our knowledge in many branches of science and technology. IRIDE will contribute to open new avenues of discoveries and to address most important riddles: What does matter consist of? What is the structure of proteins that have a fundamental role in life processes? What can we learn from protein structure to improve the treatment of diseases and to design more efficient drugs? But also how does an electronic chip behave under the effect of radiations? How can the heat flow in a large heat exchanger be optimized? The scientific potential of IRIDE is far reaching and justifies the construction of such a large facility in Italy in synergy with the national research institutes and companies and in the framework of the European and international research. It will impact also on R&D work for ILC, FEL, and will be complementarity to other large scale accelerator projects. IRIDE is also intended to be realized in subsequent stages of development depending on the assigned priorities., Comment: 270 pages

Plasmons are the quantized collective oscillations of electrons in metals and doped semiconductors. The plasmons of ordinary, massive electrons are since a long time basic ingredients of research in plasmonics and in optical metamaterials. Plasmons of massless Dirac electrons were instead recently observed in a purely two-dimensional electron system (2DEG)like graphene, and their properties are promising for new tunable plasmonic metamaterials in the terahertz and the mid-infrared frequency range. Dirac quasi-particles are known to exist also in the two-dimensional electron gas which forms at the surface of topological insulators due to a strong spin-orbit interaction. Therefore,one may look for their collective excitations by using infrared spectroscopy. Here we first report evidence of plasmonic excitations in a topological insulator (Bi2Se3), that was engineered in thin micro-ribbon arrays of different width W and period 2W to select suitable values of the plasmon wavevector k. Their lineshape was found to be extremely robust vs. temperature between 6 and 300 K, as one may expect for the excitations of topological carriers. Moreover, by changing W and measuring in the terahertz range the plasmonic frequency vP vs. k we could show, without using any fitting parameter, that the dispersion curve is in quantitative agreement with that predicted for Dirac plasmons., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, published in Nature Nanotechnology (2013)

We report on an infrared study on the undoped compound BaFe2As2 as a function of both pressure (up to about 10 GPa) at three temperatures (300, 160, and 110 K). The evolution with pressure and temperature of the optical conductivity shows that, by increasing pressure, the mid-infrared absorptions associated with magnetic order are lowered while the Drude term increases, indicating the evolution towards a conventional metallic state. We evaluate the spectral weight dependence on pressure comparing it to that previously found upon doping. The whole optical results indicate that lattice modifications can not be recognized as the only parameter determining the low-energy electrodynamics in these compounds.

We present high-quality optical data and density functional perturbation theory calculations for the vibrational spectrum of solid picene (C$_{22}$H$_{14}$) under pressure up to 8 GPa. First-principles calculations reproduce with a remarkable accuracy the pressure effects on both frequency and intensities of the phonon peaks experimentally observed . Through a detailed analysis of the phonon eigenvectors, We use the projection on molecular eigenmodes to unambiguously fit the experimental spectra, resolving complicated spectral structures, in a system with hundreds of phonon modes. With these projections, we can also quantify the loss of molecular character under pressure. Our results indicate that picene, despite a \sim 20 % compression of the unit cell, remains substantially a molecular solid up to 8 GPa, with phonon modes displaying a smooth and uniform hardening with pressure. The Grueneisen parameter of the 1380 cm^{-1} a_1 Raman peak ($\gamma_p=0.1$) is much lower than the effective value ($\gamma_d=0.8$) due to K doping. This is an indication that the phonon softening in K doped samples is mainly due to charge transfer and electron-phonon coupling., Comment: Replaced with final version (PRB)

The isostructural metal-insulator transition in Cr-doped V2O3 is the textbook example of a Mott-Hubbard transition between a paramagnetic metal and a paramagnetic insulator. We review recent theoretical calculations as well as experimental findings which shed new light on this famous transition. Most available theories for correlated electron transport are based on the Hubbard Hamiltonian. In this effective theory, renormalized hopping and interaction parameters only implicitly incorporate the coupling of correlated charge carriers to microscopic degrees of freedom. Unfortunately, no spectroscopy can individually probe such renormalizations, limiting the applicability of Hubbard models. We show here that the role of each individual degree of freedom can be made explicit by using a new experimental technique, which we term 'quantum modulation spectroscopy' and we demonstrate here in the one-dimensional Mott insulator ET-F2TCNQ. We explore the role on the charge hopping of two localized molecular modes, which we drive with a mid infrared optical pulse. Sidebands appear in the modulated optical spectrum, and their linshape is fitted with a model based on the dynamic Hubbard Hamiltonian. A striking asymmetry between the renormalization of doublons and holons is revealed. The concept of quantum modulation spectroscopy can be used to systematically deconstruct Hubbard Hamiltonians in many materials, exposing the role of any mode, electronic or magnetic, that can be driven to large amplitude with a light field., Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures

Recently, Mitsuhashi et al., have observed superconductivity with transition temperature up to 18 K in potassium doped picene (C22H14), a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon compound [Nature 464 (2010) 76]. Theoretical analysis indicate the importance of electron-phonon coupling in the superconducting mechanisms of these systems, with different emphasis on inter- and intra-molecular vibrations, depending on the approximations used. Here we present a combined experimental and ab-initio study of the Raman and infrared spectrum of undoped solid picene, which allows us to unanbiguously assign the vibrational modes. This combined study enables the identification of the modes which couple strongly to electrons and hence can play an important role in the superconducting properties of the doped samples.

The optical conductivity and the spectral weight of four topological insulators with increasing chemical compensation (Bi2Se3, Bi2-xCaxSe3, Bi2Se2Te, Bi2Te2Se) have been measured from 5 to 300 K and from sub-THz to visible frequencies. The effect of compensation is clearly observed in the infrared spectra, through the suppression of an extrinsic Drude term and the appearance of strong absorption peaks, that we assign to electronic transitions among localized states. From the far-infrared spectral weight of the most compensated sample (Bi2Te2Se) one can estimate a density of charge-carriers in the order of 10^17/cm^3 in good agreement with transport data. Those results demonstrate that the low-energy electrodynamics in single crystals of topological insulators, even at the highest degree of compensation presently achieved, is still affected by extrinsic charge excitations., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We address the in-plane pressure-dependent electrodynamics of graphite through synchrotron based infrared spectroscopy and ab initio Density Functional Theory calculations. The Drude term remarkably increases upon pressure application, as a consequence of an enhancement of both electron and hole charge densities. This is due to the growth of the band dispersion along the k_z direction between the K and H points of the Brillouin zone. On the other hand, the mid-infrared optical conductivity between 800 and 5000 cm-1 is almost flat, and very weakly pressure dependent, at least up to 7 GPa. This demonstrates a surprising robustness of the graphene-like universal quantum conductance of graphite, even when the interlayer distance is significantly reduced., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures; final version accepted in PRB

The ab-plane optical conductivity of eleven single crystals, belonging to the families Sr2-xCuO2Cl2, Y1-xCaxBa2Cu3O6, Bi2Sr2-xLaxCuO6, and Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 has been measured with hole concentrations p between 0 and 0.18, and for 6 K < T < 500 K to obtain an infrared picture of the p,T phase diagram of the Cu-O plane. At extreme dilution (p = 0.005), a narrow peak is observed at 1570 cm-1 (195 meV), that we assign to a single-hole bound state. For increasing doping, that peak broadens into a far-infrared (FIR) band whose low-energy edge sets the insulating gap. The insulator-to-metal transition (IMT) occurs when the softening of the FIR band closes the gap thus evolving into a Drude term. In the metallic phase, a multi-band analysis identifies a mid-infrared band which weakly depends on temperature and softens for increasing p, while the extended-Drude analysis leads to an optical scattering rate larger than the frequency, as found in other cuprates. The infrared spectral weight W(T) is consistent with a Fermi liquid renormalized by strong correlations, provided that the T^4 term of the Sommerfeld expansion is included above 300 K. In the superconducting phase, the optical response of single-layer Bi2Sr2-xLaxCuO6 at optimum doping is similar to that of the corresponding optimally-doped bilayer Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8., Comment: 28 pages, 14 figures

We measure the optical conductivity of (SrMnO3)n/(LaMnO3)2n superlattices (SL) for n=1,3,5, and 8 and 10 < T < 400 K. Data show a T-dependent insulator to metal transition (IMT) for n \leq 3, driven by the softening of a polaronic mid-infrared band. At n = 5 that softening is incomplete, while at the largest-period n=8 compound the MIR band is independent of T and the SL remains insulating. One can thus first observe the IMT in a manganite system in the absence of the disorder due to chemical doping. V2O3 is the prototype system for the Mott transition, one of the most fundamental phenomena of electronic correlation. Temperature, doping or pressure induce a metal to insulator transition (MIT) between a paramagnetic metal (PM) and a paramagnetic insulator (PI). This or related MITs have a high technological potential, among others for intelligent windows and field effect transistors. However the spatial scale on which such transitions develop is not known in spite of their importance for research and applications. Here we unveil for the first time the MIT in Cr-doped V2O3 with submicron lateral resolution: with decreasing temperature, microscopic domains become metallic and coexist with an insulating background. This explains why the associated PM phase is actually a poor metal. The phase separation can be associated with a thermodynamic instability near the transition. We present reflectance measurements in the infrared region on a single crystal the rare earth scandate DyScO3. Measurements performed between room temperature and 10 K allow to determine the frequency of the infrared-active phonons, never investigated experimentally, and to get information on their temperature dependence. A comparison with the phonon peak frequency resulting from ab-initio computations is also provided. We finally report detailed data on the frequency dependence of the complex refractive index of DyScO3 in the terahertz region, which is important in the analysis of terahertz measurements on thin films deposited on DyScO3.

The optical conductivity and the spectral weight W(T) of two superconducting cuprates at optimum doping, Bi2Sr2-xLaxCuO6 and Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8, have been first measured up to 500 K. Above 300 K, W(T) deviates from the usual T2 behavior in both compounds, even though the zero-frequency extrapolation of the optical conductivity remains larger than the Ioffe-Regel limit. The deviation is surprisingly well described by the T4 term of the Sommerfeld expansion, but its coefficients are enhanced by strong correlation. We measured the THz reflectance properties of a high quality epitaxial thin film of the Fe-based superconductor BaFe$_{1.84}$Co$_{0.16}$As$_2$ with T$_c$=22.5 K. The film was grown by pulsed laser deposition on a DyScO$_3$ substrate with an epitaxial SrTiO$_3$ intermediate layer. The measured $R_S/R_N$ spectrum, i.e. the reflectivity ratio between the superconducting and normal state reflectance, provides clear evidence of a superconducting gap $\Delta_A$ close to 15 cm$^{-1}$. A detailed data analysis shows that a two-band, two-gap model is absolutely necessary to obtain a good description of the measured $R_S/R_N$ spectrum. The low-energy $\Delta_A$ gap results to be well determined ($\Delta_A$=15.5$\pm$0.5 cm$^{-1}$), while the value of the high-energy gap $\Delta_B$ is more uncertain ($\Delta_B$=55$\pm$7 cm$^{-1}$). Our results provide evidence of a nodeless isotropic double-gap scenario, with the presence of two optical gaps corresponding to 2$\Delta/kT_c$ values close to 2 and 7., Comment: Published Version

We report on the fabrication and mid-infrared transmission properties of free-standing thin metal films, periodically patterned with holes at periods down to 2 microns and area of 3x3 mm2. Square grids were fabricated by electron beam lithography and deep-etching techniques and display substrateless holes, with the metal being supported by a patterned dielectric silicon nitride membrane. The mid-infrared transmission spectra of the substrateless grid display extraordinary transmission peaks and resonant absorption lines with a Q-factor up to 22. These spectral features are due to the interaction of the radiation with surface plasmon modes. The high transmittivity and the negative value of the dielectric constant at selected frequencies make our substrateless structures ideal candidates for the fabrication of mid-infrared metamaterials., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We will report on the electromagnetic response due to induced dipolar currents in metamaterials of 2-dimensional array of metallic elements. Used as frequency selectors, the metamaterial transmittance presents a single resonance in the region from 1 to 8 THz that can be easily selected and scaled maintaining unaltered the quality factor by choosing the size and shape of the planar metallic element and exploiting the scalability properties of the Maxwell equations. Basing on these studies, we have designed and tested a series of simple and inexpensive frequency selective metamaterials fabricated by using lithographic processes., Comment: The following article has been submitted to Applied Physics Letters. The possibility of multi-band conductivity and multi-gap superconductivity is explored in oriented V3Si thin films by means of reflectance and transmittance measurements at terahertz frequencies. The temperature dependence of the transmittance spectra in the normal state gives evidence of two bands contributing to the film conductivity. This outcome is consistent with electronic structure calculations performed within density functional theory. On this basis, we performed a detailed data analysis and found that all optical data can be consistently accounted for within a two-band framework, with the presence of two optical gaps in the superconducting state corresponding to 2D=kTc values close to 1.8 and 3.8., Comment: 6 pages with 4 figures

By studying the optical conductivity of BSLCO and YCBCO, we show that the metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) in these hole-doped cuprates is driven by the opening of a small gap at low T in the far infrared. Its width is consistent with the observations of Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy in other cuprates, along the nodal line of the k-space. The gap forms as the Drude term turns into a far-infrared absorption, whose peak frequency can be approximately predicted on the basis of a Mott-like transition. Another band in the mid infrared softens with doping but is less sensitive to the MIT., Comment: To be published on Physical Review Letters

The metal to insulator transition in the charge transfer NiS{2-x}Se{x} compound has been investigated through infrared reflectivity. Measurements performed by applying pressure to pure NiS2 (lattice contraction) and by Se-alloying (lattice expansion) reveal that in both cases an anomalous metallic state is obtained. We find that optical results are not compatible with the linear Se-alloying vs Pressure scaling relation previously established through transport, thus pointing out the substantially different microscopic origin of the two transitions., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. We present new data on the pressure dependence at 300 K of the optical reflectivity of CeTe$_3$, which undergoes a charge-density-wave (CDW) phase transition well above room temperature. The collected data cover an unprecedented broad spectral range from the infrared up to the ultraviolet, which allows a robust determination of the gap as well as of the fraction of the Fermi surface affected by the formation of the CDW condensate. Upon compressing the lattice there is a progressive closing of the gap inducing a transfer of spectral weight from the gap feature into the Drude component. At frequencies above the CDW gap we also identify a power-law behavior, consistent with findings along the $R$Te$_3$ series (i.e., chemical pressure) and suggestive of a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid scenario at high energy scales. This newest set of data is placed in the context of our previous investigations of this class of materials and allows us to revisit important concepts for the physics of CDW state in layered-like two-dimensional systems.

We measured the Raman and the Infrared phonon spectrum of SmFeAsO polycrystalline samples. We also performed Density Functional Theory calculations within the pseudopotential approximation to obtain the structural and dynamical lattice properties of both the SmFeAsO and the prototype LaFeAsO compounds. The measured Raman and Infrared phonon frequencies are well predicted by the optical phonon frequencies computed at the Gamma point, showing the capability of the employed ab-initio methods to describe the dynamical properties of these materials. A comparison among the phonon frequencies of different oxypnictides suggests a possible role of the high frequency phonons in the pairing mechanism leading to superconductivity in these materials., Comment: text file (.tex) and 2 figures (.eps)

We report measurements of resistivity, magnetoresistivity, Hall effect, Seebeck coefficient, infrared reflectivity of undoped SmFeAsO and lightly doped SmFeAs(O0.93F0.07) oxypnictides. All the properties measured on SmFeAsO are characterized by clear signatures of the magnetic instability. A self-consistent picture emerges in which below the magnetic transition carrier condensation occurs due to the opening of spin density wave (SDW) gap. This is accompanied by the mobility increase of not gapped carriers due to the suppression of electron-electron scattering. SmFeAs(O0.93F0.07) exhibits an increase of the metallic character on cooling consistent with electron doping, even though at room temperature values of all the properties nearly overlaps with those of SmFeAsO. However, with temperature decrease all anomalies related to the SDW instability are missed and the superconducting transition occurs. This suggests that doping breaks abruptly the symmetries of the Fermi surface inhibiting the SDW formation in favor of the superconducting transition, with no substantial changes in the density of states or in the effective mass., Comment: Submitted to SUST
