Abstract

Background. Dental caries is the localized destruction of dental hard tissues (enamel and dentine). Decayed, Missing, and Filled Teeth (DMFT) index is the most commonly used dental caries index. Thickness of the outermost part of the tooth called the enamel is determined by the rate of deposition of enamel proteins. Relative enamel thickness (RET) gives a measure of enamel thickness with respect to dentine. Dental caries is influenced by a genetically determined factor called dermatoglyphics (DG). As the genes responsible for RET and DG lie on the same chromosome and develop during the same time of intrauterine life, it is biologically plausible to correlate RET and DG. Aims. This study consists of two primary aims: (1) to assess RET using cone beam computed tomography images and correlate it with caries and (2) to correlate RET with DG. Materials and Methods. 148 dental subjects were assessed for DMFT caries score and were categorized as Group 1 with DMFT = 0 and Group 2 with DMFT ≥ 1 . Following this, their DG pattern was recorded digitally. The CBCT images of these subjects were assessed for RET, and the data were analyzed statistically. Results. Mean RET in our sample population is 18.45 (SD 3.79) while mean DMFT is 5.34 (SD 5.13). Mean RET in Group 1 subjects was 19.82 (SD 4.05) while that in the Group 2 was 17.68 (SD 3.43). RET and DMFT showed a statistically significant negative correlation ( p = 0.007 ). The “Single Loop” DG characteristic showed a statistically significant difference between males and females ( p = 0.031 ). The “Simple Arch” type of DG was positively correlated with RET. Conclusion. This is the first in vivo study to assess RET using CBCT images and correlate with DMFT and DG. RET is inversely related to DMFT while directly proportional to the “Simple arch” DG pattern. Males and females differed in their “Single Loop” DG characteristic.

Abstract

Parkinson’s disease is usually seen in adults in their middle and late ages. Most people with this disease are less likely to opt for dental treatments unless it is an acute condition. Tremors caused by Parkinson’s disease can make dental appointments, especially prolonged treatments, a challenge. The case presented here was successfully treated with an immediate denture for the partially edentulous maxillary and mandibular arches. Early morning brief appointments were given for the procedure. Patient was instructed to take the prescribed parkinsonism medications 60 to 90 minutes before the appointment to utilize the advantage of its peak response. Sympathetic and caring approach towards the patient was employed to reduce his anxiety during the procedures. Some modification of technics and materials was adopted to suit the special situation.

Abstract

Objective: The populations in Saudi Arabia suffer from high prevalence of Dental Caries. Water fluoridation is significant public health measure for such population. A nation- wide cross sectional survey was undertaken to evaluate the dentists opinion on effectiveness of water fluoridation in controlling dental caries. Materials and methods: The survey was conducted by the Directorate of Dentistry, Ministry of Health Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Dentists working in all the provinces of the country were randomly selected from the official register of directorate of dentistry, Ministry of health to participate in the survey. Results - completed questionnaires were received showing the opinions of dentists (n= 398). Fifty nine percent of dentists (n= 235) answered as"yes", 13.8% of them (n= 55) replied as "no"• and 27.13% of the dentists (n= 108) answered as "not sure and need an update"•. Conclusion - Majority of dentists have opinion towards benefit of water fluoridation. However, there is a need for continuing dental education programs with special emphasis on fluorides, for dentists in the country. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a disease process seen with increasing frequency by the dental professionals. It is characterized by the loss of cell-mediated immunity caused by CD4+ lymphocyte destruction. Approximately 3% of HIV positive patients develop lymphoma during the course of their HIV disease. Non Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) is increasing more rapidly than any other malignancies and do constitutes the most common oral neoplasm after Kaposi's sarcoma (KS). But very few cases have been reported with NHL as the first presenting sign, leading to the diagnosis of HIV. Here, a case of NHL occurring in the oral cavity as a first sign in HIV seropositive patient has been reportcdhighlighting the clinical and microscopic features. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the incidence of micronuclei (MN) in buccal mucosal cells of professionals working in radiology area to determine the risk of stochastic effects of radiation., Materials and Methods: All the professionals and students working in King Khalid University - College of Dentistry radiology area were included in the Risk Group (RG = 27). The Control Group (CG = 27) comprised of healthy individual matching the gender and age of the RG. Buccal mucosal scraping from all the 54 subjects of RG and CG were stained with Papanicolaou stain and observed under oil immersion lens (×100) for the presence of micronuclei (MN) in the exfoliated epithelial cells., Results: There was no significant difference between the incidence of MN in RG and CG (p = >0.05) using t-test., Conclusion: Routine radiation protection protocol does minimize the risk of radiation induced cytotoxicity, however, screening of professionals should be carried out at regular intervals.
