Macrophytes and cladocerans represent the main antagonistic groups that regulate phytoplankton biomass; however, the mechanism behind this interaction is unclear. In laboratory conditions, we separately evaluated the effects of three submerged macrophytes (Ceratophyllum demersum, Myriophyllum aquaticum, and Stuckenia pectinata), as well as their exudates, and plant-associated microbiota (POM < 25 µm) + exudates on the population growth of Daphnia cf. pulex and Simocephalus cf. mixtus. Living Ceratophyllum, exudates, and POM < 25 µm + exudates exhibited the most robust positive effects on Simocephalus density and the rate of population increase (r). Subsequently, we examined the effects of Ceratophyllum on the filtration and feeding rates of Simocephalus and Daphnia, revealing significant (p < 0.001) promotion of filtration and feeding in Simocephalus but not in Daphnia. To elucidate the specific effects of this macrophyte on Simocephalus demography, we assessed selected life table variables across the same treatments. The treatments involving exudates and living Ceratophyllum resulted in approximately 40% longer survivorship and significantly (p < 0.01) enhanced fecundity. Our findings indicate that exudates from submerged macrophytes positively influence Simocephalus demography by increasing filtration rates, survivorship, and fecundity. This synergy suggests a substantial impact on phytoplankton abundance.

Abstract HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) are prevalent despite combined antiretroviral therapy (cART), affecting 52% of people living with HIV. Our laboratory has demonstrated increased expression of cathepsin B (CATB) in postmortem brain tissue with HAND. Increased secretion of CATB from in vitro HIV-infected monocyte-derived macrophages (MDM) induces neurotoxicity. Activation of cannabinoid receptor type 2 (CB2R) inhibits HIV-1 replication in macrophages and the neurotoxicity induced by viral proteins. However, it is unknown if CB2R agonists affect CATB secretion and neurotoxicity in HIV-infected MDM. We hypothesized that HIV-infected MDM exposed to CB2R agonists decrease CATB secretion and neurotoxicity. Primary MDM were inoculated with HIV-1ADA and treated with selective CB2R agonists JWH-133 and HU-308. HIV-1 p24 and CATB levels were determined from supernatants using ELISA. MDM were pre-treated with a selective CB2R antagonist SR144528 before JWH-133 treatment to determine if CB2R activation is responsible for the effects. Neuronal apoptosis was assessed using a TUNEL assay. Results show that both agonists reduce HIV-1 replication and CATB secretion from MDM in a time and dose-dependent manner and that CB2R activation is responsible for these effects. Finally, JWH-133 decreased HIV/MDM-CATB induced neuronal apoptosis. Our results suggest that agonists of CB2R represent a potential therapeutic strategy against HIV/MDM-induced neurotoxicity.

Se estudió la composición química y actividad antioxidante de los aceites esenciales de las hojas de Tanacetum vulgare L. (comúnmente llamado tansi) y Mentha x piperita L. var. vulgaris (comúnmente llamado menta) cultivados en Cusco (Perú). Tres muestras de plantas de cada especie, recién cortadas, se extrajeron mediante hidrodestilación durante 3 h con un aparato Clevenger. Los análisis de los aceites esenciales se hicieron por cromatografía de gases con detectores de llama de hidrógeno y selectivo de masas. Se identificaron cincuenta y setenta compuestos en los aceites esenciales de T. vulgare y M. x piperita var. vulgare, respectivamente. En el aceite esencial de T. vulgare, los monoterpenos oxigenados fueron la clase más representada de compuestos volátiles (92,6 %), con trans-tuyona como mayoritario. Esta composición química sugiere que la planta tansi analizada pertenece al quimotipo trans-tuyona más común. En el aceite esencial de M. x piperita, los monoterpenos oxigenados (76,7 %) fueron la clase mayoritaria; entre ellos el mentol (35,4 %), acetato de mentilo (19,6 %) y mentona (7,1 %). La capacidad de secuestrar radicales fue evaluada en los aceites esenciales mediante el método del 1,1-difenil-2-picril-hidrazilo (DPPH). Ambos aceites esenciales fueron capaces de reducir los radicales DPPH y esta actividad fue dosis-dependiente. Sin embargo, Mentha x piperita var. vulgare tiene mayor actividad antioxidante que el aceite esencial de T. vulgare.

The properties of liquid crystal-magnetic nanoparticle composites have potential for sensing in the body. We study the response of a liquid crystal-magnetic nanoparticle (LC-MNP) composite to applied potentials of hundreds of volts per meter. Measuring samples using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and imaging composites using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), we demonstrate that electric potentials applied across centimeter scale LC-MNP composite samples can be detected using XRD and MRI techniques.

Esta investigación se centró en evaluar el impacto de seis talleres sobre la adopción de actitudes deseables respecto a la conservación del ambiente y la sostenibilidad, por parte de distintos públicos visitantes de un Museo Interactivo. La metodología incluyó: a) El diseño de escalas tipo Likert que se aplicaron antes y después del taller. b) Entrevistas telefónicas o visita a instituciones educativas, dos meses después de la visita al Museo. El análisis cuantitativo mostró que las actitudes de los participantes mejoraron en todos los talleres aunque no siempre fue estadísticamente significativo. El análisis cualitativo reveló que los participantes mostraron actitudes de compromiso y cuidado hacia el ambiente. Algunas estuvieron asociadas a los talleres y otras a actitudes desarrolladas con anterioridad al taller.

The study was performed to investigate possible alterations in oxygen consumption in an animal model with broad intestinal resection. Oxygen consumption and the thermal effect of a short meal were measured in rats subjected to short bowel syndrome. Four groups of rats were used. Group I was the control group, group II was sham operated, group III was submitted to 80% jejunum-ileum resection, and group IV was submitted to 80% jejunum-ileum resection with colon interposition. Ninety days after surgery, oxygen consumption was measured over a period of 6 h with the animals fasted overnight. The thermal effect of feeding was determined in another session of oxygen consumption measurement in animals fasted for 12 h. A 12-kcal meal was then introduced into the animal chamber and oxygen consumption was measured for a further 4 h. No differences in fasting oxygen consumption or in the thermal effect of the meal were detected among the groups studied. It is concluded that short bowel syndrome does not affect the overall energy expenditure of rats.

Fruit flies belonging to the Bactrocera dorsalis species complex pose a significant threat to mangoes and other crops in the Philippines and worldwide. Identifying cryptic species within this complex is challenging, particularly when relying solely on morphological analysis. In this study, we sequenced two fragments of the nuclear 18S and ITS2-28S rRNA genes from specimens of Bactrocera dorsalis Hendel collected in the Philippines to assess their applicability for species diagnostics. Subsequent sequencing and analysis revealed that the 18S and 28S rRNA gene fragments matched B. dorsalis sequences in NCBI but also displayed high similarity with other Bactrocera and insect species. On the other hand, sequences of the ITS2 segment showed hits specific to B. dorsalis. Further analysis of the 18S rRNA gene in fruit flies collected from various sources and host plants in the country suggests conserved sequences among Bactrocera samples, irrespective of collection site and host plant species. In conclusion, our findings suggest that, among the tested nuclear DNA fragments, only the ITS2 demonstrates sufficient species-level nucleotide variation for effective use as a molecular diagnostic marker for B. dorsalis identification. The MOF material NU-1000 was employed to host Ni tripodal complexes prepared from new organometallic precursors [HNi(κ4(E,P,P,P)-E(o-C6H4CH2PPh2)3], E = Si (Ni-1), Ge (Ni-2). The new heterogeneous catalytic materials, Ni-1@NU-1000 and Ni-2@NU-1000, show the advantages of both homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts. They catalyze the hydroboration of aldehydes and ketones more efficiently than the homogeneous Ni-1 and Ni-2, under aerobic conditions and show recyclability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

En este artículo se propone un nuevo índice de heterogeneidad que compara dos vectores, uno de observación y otro el esperado. Un caso particular resulta cuando el vector esperado tiene las mismas entradas en todos sus elementos, entonces, el índice propuesto resulta ser de desigualdad. La construcción geométrica y analítica del índice propuesto le confiere robustez matemática, además de su amplia gama de aplicaciones en distintas disciplinas como economía, estadística y sociología. En este trabajo hemos aplicado el índice en tópicos como el reparto de bienes, el desarrollo humano y el salario mínimo, obteniéndose resultados bastantes satisfactorios.
