4. Research on Drug Efficacy using a Terahertz Metasurface Microfluidic Biosensor Based on Fano Resonance Effect

Abstract

Advanced biosensors must exhibit high sensitivity, reliability, and convenience, making them suitable for detecting trace samples in biological or medical applications. Currently, biometric identification is the predominant method in clinical practice, but it is complex and time-consuming. In this study, we propose an optical metasurface utilizing the Fano resonance effect, which exhibits a sharp resonance with a transmittance of 32% at 0.65 THz. The resonance dip has a narrow bandwidth of 0.07 THz and a high Q-factor of 42. This resonance arises from the coupling of bright and dark modes, underpinned by the electromagnetic mechanism of Fano resonance. We integrated the metasurface into a microfluidic platform and fabricated low-temperature gallium arsenide photoconductive antennas (LT-GaAs-PCAs) on both sides of the microfluidics to efficiently generate and detect THz waves, significantly reducing the system’s volume. The biosensor’s detection limits for Escherichia coli(E. coli) and cefamandole nafate are 5 × 103cells/mL and 5 μg/mL, respectively. Experimentally, when E. coliand cefamandole nafate solutions were sequentially injected into the microfluidic chip, a blue shift in the spectrum was observed. The sensor measured a 95.2% killing rate of E. coliby 40 μg/mL cefamandole nafate solution, with only a 3% deviation from biological experiments. Additionally, a timed killing experiment using 40 μg/mL cefamandole nafate on E. colirevealed a 93.7% killing rate within 3 min. This research presents a THz microfluidic biosensor with rapid detection, high sensitivity, and enhanced portability and integration, offering a promising approach for biomedical research, including antibiotic efficacy assessment and bacterial concentration monitoring.

Abstract

A new mechanism for phase synchronization between neurons are presented and discussed.Field coupling and coupling of magnetic flux could be more effective for information encoding.Phase synchronization is dependent on the mode selection in electrical activities. Based on an improved neuron model with electromagnetic induction being considered, the phase synchronization approaching is investigated on a four-variable HindmarshRose neuron model by describing the electromagnetic induction with magnetic flux. The effect of time-varying electromagnetic field is described by magnetic flux and the coupling of electromagnetic field is also described by exchange of magnetic flux. It is found that magnetic flux coupling between neurons can induce perfect phase synchronization, the Lyapunov exponent spectrum and local Lyapunov dimension are calculated by using wolf scheme to detect phase synchronization of chaotic time series for membrane potentials. These results confirmed that neurons exposed to external electromagnetic field can induce phase synchronization and appropriate behaviors can be selected. It could give new mechanism explanation for phase synchronization by applying field coupling between neurons.

29. Tong-Xie-Yao-Fang alleviates diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome in rats via the GCN2/PERK-eIF2α-ATF4 signaling pathway.

Abstract

Background: Diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D) is a common functional gastrointestinal disease. Tong-Xie-Yao-Fang (TXYF), the traditional Chinese herbal medicine prescription, is a classic and effective prescription for the treatment of IBS-D, but its mechanism of action is not fully clarified.Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of TXYF in the treatment of IBS-D and to explore its potential mechanism of action.Methods: Changes in the serum levels of 50 free amino acids were targeted for detection by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and the expression of glucose-regulated protein 78 (GRP78), general control nonderepressible 2 (GCN2), and endoplasmic reticulum-resident kinase (PERK) was detected by immunohistochemistry examinations in healthy volunteers and IBS-D patients. The IBS-D rat was constructed by the three-factor superposition method of neonatal maternal separation, 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid enema, and chronic unpredictable stress stimulation. The treatment effect of TXYF on IBS-D rats was observed by recording the body weight, grasp force, fecal water content (FWC), and abdominal withdrawal reflex (AWR) of rats before and after treatment. The effects of GCN2/PERK-eukaryotic initiation factor-2 (eIF2α) -activating transcription Factor 4 (ATF4) pathway proteins and gene expression were analyzed by western blotting, reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR), and immunohistochemistry evaluations.Results: Compared with healthy volunteers, IBS-D patients exhibited lower levels of cysteine, γ-aminoacetic acid (GABA), homoproline, and lysine, and immunohistochemistry showed strong activation of GRP78, a marker of endoplasmic reticulum stress. Differential expression of GCN2 and PERK proteins was detected in IBS-D patients and rat colons. In the IBS-D rats, TXYF improved the body weight and grasp force, reduced the FWC, and improved the AWR score. TXYF increased the levels of p-GCN2 and GCN2 and reduced the levels of GRP78, p-PERK, PERK, p-eIF2α, and eIF2α, thereby affecting the expression of the apoptosis-related transcription factors ATF4, CHOP, Caspase-3, and Bcl-2.Conclusion: Our study showed that TXYF improved IBS-D by inhibiting apoptosis. The anti-apoptosis effects were potentially mediated by regulating the GCN2/PERK-eIF2a-ATF4 signaling pathway. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Real-time systems are reactive computer systems that must produce their reaction to a stimulus within given time bounds. A vital verification requirement is to estimate the Worst-Case Execution Time (WCET) of programs. These estimates are then used to predict the timing behavior of the overall system. The execution time of a program heavily depends on the underlying hardware, among which cache has the biggest influence. Analyzing cache behavior is very challenging due to the versatile cache features and complex execution environment. This article provides a survey on static cache analysis for real-time systems. We first present the challenges and static analysis techniques for independent programs with respect to different cache features. Then, the discussion is extended to cache analysis in complex execution environment, followed by a survey of existing tools based on static techniques for cache analysis. An outlook for future research is provided at last.

Abstract

In this paper, we outline the need for a coordinated international effort toward the building of an open-access Global Ocean Oxygen Database and ATlas (GO 2DAT) complying with the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable). GO 2DAT will combine data from the coastal and open ocean, as measured by the chemical Winkler titration method or by sensors (e.g., optodes, electrodes) from Eulerian and Lagrangian platforms (e.g., ships, moorings, profiling floats, gliders, ships of opportunities, marine mammals, cabled observatories). GO 2DAT will further adopt a community-agreed, fully documented metadata format and a consistent quality control (QC) procedure and quality flagging (QF) system. GO 2DAT will serve to support the development of advanced data analysis and biogeochemical models for improving our mapping, understanding and forecasting capabilities for ocean O 2 changes and deoxygenation trends. It will offer the opportunity to develop quality-controlled data synthesis products with unprecedented spatial (vertical and horizontal) and temporal (sub-seasonal to multi-decadal) resolution. These products will support model assessment, improvement and evaluation as well as the development of climate and ocean health indicators. They will further support the decision-making processes associated with the emerging blue economy, the conservation of marine resources and their associated ecosystem services and the development of management tools required by a diverse community of users (e.g., environmental agencies, aquaculture, and fishing sectors). A better knowledge base of the spatial and temporal variations of marine O 2 will improve our understanding of the ocean O 2 budget, and allow better quantification of the Earth’s carbon and heat budgets. With the ever-increasing need to protect and sustainably manage ocean services, GO 2DAT will allow scientists to fully harness the increasing volumes of O 2 data already delivered by the expanding global ocean observing system and enable smooth incorporation of much higher quantities of data from autonomous platforms in the open ocean and coastal areas into comprehensive data products in the years to come. This paper aims at engaging the community (e.g., scientists, data managers, policy makers, service users) toward the development of GO 2DAT within the framework of the UN Global Ocean Oxygen Decade (GOOD) program recently endorsed by IOC-UNESCO. A roadmap toward GO 2DAT is proposed highlighting the efforts needed (e.g., in terms of human resources).

32. An integral sliding mode observer for CPS cyber security attack detection.

Abstract

Cyber-physical system (CPS) is a next-generation intelligent system integrating computing, communication, and control. As a unit of computing process and physical process, CPS is a new research field, where cooperative adaptive cruise control (CACC) is not only a microcosm of CPS but also a prerequisite for unmanned systems. CACC relies on the wireless communication network technology to achieve cooperative platooning control through vehicle-to-vehicle collaborative control methods. It can improve traffic efficiency and ensure safe driving. Once the wireless network is introduced by each vehicle to exchange information, it is vulnerable to cyber attacks, making attack detection necessary. In this paper, an integral sliding mode observer is designed to monitor malicious attacks. The proposed sliding mode observer not only retains the performance of traditional sliding mode control but also realizes the finite-time observation, avoiding the singular phenomenon that may occur in the traditional terminal sliding mode.

33. Synchronization stability and pattern selection in a memristive neuronal network.

Abstract

Spatial pattern formation and selection depend on the intrinsic self-organization and cooperation between nodes in spatiotemporal systems. Based on a memory neuron model, a regular network with electromagnetic induction is proposed to investigate the synchronization and pattern selection. In our model, the memristor is used to bridge the coupling between the magnetic flux and the membrane potential, and the induction current results from the time-varying electromagnetic field contributed by the exchange of ion currents and the distribution of charged ions. The statistical factor of synchronization predicts the transition of synchronization and pattern stability. The bifurcation analysis of the sampled time series for the membrane potential reveals the mode transition in electrical activity and pattern selection. A formation mechanism is outlined to account for the emergence of target waves. Although an external stimulus is imposed on each neuron uniformly, the diversity in the magnetic flux and the induction current leads to emergence of target waves in the studied network.
