Background: Asian schistosomiasis is projected to be eliminated by 2030 according to World Health Organization road map for neglected tropical diseases 2021–2030. Snail control is an important measure but has not yet been systematically evaluated at a country scale. Here, we report the findings from a nationwide survey to demonstrate the dynamics of Oncomelania and its potential role in transmission interruption of schistisomiasis in the People's Republic of China (P.R. China). Methods: Between March 2016 and December 2017, we conducted a nationwide census on Oncomelania snail habitats in P.R. China. All historically recorded snail habitats were identified and reviewed. Information on habitat attributes, including the infestation of snails, was collected. The shape of habitats was determined using global positioning system and geographical information system technologies. The relationship between snail control and schistosomiasis elimination was established in 378 endemic counties. The comparison of accumulated snail-infested range (ASR) and the median ratio of eliminated ASR between the transmission-interrupted and endemic counties was tested by a non-parametric test (Mann–Whitney) with a significance level of 0.05. Results: Overall, 15,377.7 million m2 of potential snail habitats with a total of 356,550 snail habitats were identified in P.R. China. The ASR amounted to 86.0% of the total area. Most of the ASR (94.9%) and habitats (68.5%) were distributed in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. Snail habitats were found up to an altitude of 2859 m above the mean sea level. By 2017, 85.1% of habitats (73.0% of the ASR) had been eliminated with almost half of them eliminated between 1965 and 1982. The elimination of snail habitats promoted transmission interruption of schistosomiasis, but showed variable patterns in different landscapes. The ratio of eliminated ASR was 99.6 and 91.4% in water network and hilly areas, respectively, while it was only 64.8% in marshland areas, particularly in Hunan and Jiangxi where the two largest freshwater lakes of P.R. China are located. Marshland habitats were seen as the most difficult for transmission interruption, which calls for additional control measures in these settings. Conclusions: Our results support recent recommendations by the World Health Organization to implement snail control and demonstrate that schistosomiasis elimination can be achieved. The nationwide, high-resolution map of Oncomelania snail habitats in P.R. China will support further efforts to eliminate schistosomiasis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Herein, an efficient and green procedure for the synthesis of lactic acid via the dehydrogenative coupling of ethylene glycol with methanol is reported. The reaction is carried out under mild conditions in the presence of a catalytic amount of CyPNP‐Mn as the catalyst and tBuOK as the base and is an example of the deoxygenative coupling of a lower alcohol to form lactic acid via elegant metal–ligand cooperation with a homogeneous non‐noble‐metal catalyst in >99% conversion and selectivity. This transformation proceeds at low catalyst loading (0.00625 mol%) with a high turnover number (TON) of up to 6080 for lactic acid. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Grey matter (GM) atrophies are observed in multiple sclerosis, neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders [NMOSD; both anti-aquaporin-4 antibody-positive (AQP4+) and -negative (AQP4−) subtypes] and myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease (MOGAD). Revealing the pathogenesis of brain atrophy in these disorders would help their differential diagnosis and guide therapeutic strategies. To determine the neurobiological underpinnings of GM atrophies in multiple sclerosis, AQP4+ NMOSD, AQP4− NMOSD and MOGAD, we conducted a virtual histology analysis that links T1-weighted image derived GM atrophy and gene expression using a multicentre cohort of 324 patients with multiple sclerosis, 197 patients with AQP4+ NMOSD, 75 patients with AQP4− NMOSD, 47 patients with MOGAD and 2169 healthy control subjects. First, interregional GM atrophy profiles across the cortical and subcortical regions were determined using Cohen's d between patients with multiple sclerosis, AQP4+ NMOSD, AQP4− NMOSD or MOGAD and healthy controls. The GM atrophy profiles were then spatially correlated with the gene expression levels extracted from the Allen Human Brain Atlas, respectively. Finally, we explored the virtual histology of clinical-feature relevant GM atrophy using a subgroup analysis that stratified by physical disability, disease duration, number of relapses, lesion burden and cognitive function. Multiple sclerosis showed a severe widespread GM atrophy pattern, mainly involving subcortical nuclei and brainstem. AQP4+ NMOSD showed an obvious widespread pattern of GM atrophy, predominately located in occipital cortex as well as cerebellum. AQP4− NMOSD showed a mild widespread GM atrophy pattern, mainly located in frontal and parietal cortices. MOGAD showed GM atrophy mainly involving the frontal and temporal cortices. High expression of genes specific to microglia, astrocytes, oligodendrocytes and endothelial cells in multiple sclerosis, S1 pyramidal cells in AQP4+ NMOSD, as well as S1 and CA1 pyramidal cells in MOGAD, had spatial correlations with GM atrophy profile, while no atrophy profile-related gene expression was found in AQP4− NMOSD. Virtual histology of clinical feature-relevant GM atrophy pointed mainly to the shared neuronal and endothelial cells, among the four neuroinflammatory diseases. The unique underlying virtual histology patterns were microglia, astrocytes and oligodendrocytes for multiple sclerosis; astrocytes for AQP4+ NMOSD; and oligodendrocytes for MOGAD. Neuronal and endothelial cells were shared potential targets across these neuroinflammatory diseases. Abstract Most human pathogens originate from non-human hosts and certain pathogens persist in animal reservoirs. The transmission of such pathogens to humans may lead to self-sustaining chains of transmission. These pathogens represent the highest risk for future pandemics. For their prevention, the transmission over the species barrier — although rare — should, by all means, be avoided. In the current COVID-19 pandemic, surprisingly though, most of the current research concentrates on the control by drugs and vaccines, while comparatively little scientific inquiry focuses on future prevention. Already in 2012, the World Bank recommended to engage in a systemic One Health approach for zoonoses control, considering integrated surveillance-response and control of human and animal diseases for primarily economic reasons. First examples, like integrated West Nile virus surveillance in mosquitos, wild birds, horses and humans in Italy show evidence of financial savings from a closer cooperation of human and animal health sectors. Provided a zoonotic origin can be ascertained for the COVID-19 pandemic, integrated wildlife, domestic animal and humans disease surveillance-response may contribute to prevent future outbreaks. In conclusion, the earlier a zoonotic pathogen can be detected in the environment, in wildlife or in domestic animals; and the better human, animal and environmental surveillance communicate with each other to prevent an outbreak, the lower are the cumulative costs.
