Abstract

Aim: We test the hypothesis that wind dispersal is more common among emergent tree species given that being tall increases the likelihood of effective seed dispersal. Location: Americas, Africa and the Asia‐Pacific. Time period: 1970–2020. Major taxa studied: Gymnosperms and Angiosperms. Methods: We used a dataset consisting of tree inventories from 2821 plots across three biogeographic regions (Americas, Africa and Asia‐Pacific), including dry and wet forests, to determine the maximum height and dispersal strategy of 5314 tree species. A web search was used to determine whether species were wind‐dispersed. We compared differences in tree species maximum height between biogeographic regions and examined the relationship between species maximum height and wind dispersal using logistic regression. We also tested whether emergent tree species, that is species with at least one individual taller than the 95% height percentile in one or more plots, were disproportionally wind‐dispersed in dry and wet forests within each biogeographic region. Results: Our dataset provides maximum height values for 5314 tree species, of which more than half (2914) had no record of this trait in existing global databases. We found that, on average, tree species in the Americas have lower maximum heights compared to those in Africa and the Asia Pacific. The probability of wind dispersal increased significantly with tree species maximum height and was significantly higher among emergent than non‐emergent tree species in both dry and wet forests in all three biogeographic regions. Main conclusion: Wind dispersal is more prevalent in tall, emergent tree species than in non‐emergent species and may thus be an important factor in the evolution of tree species maximum height. By providing the most comprehensive dataset so far of tree species maximum height and wind dispersal strategies, this study paves the way for advancing our understanding of the eco‐evolutionary drivers of tree size. Abstract

Knowledge about the biogeographic affinities of the world's tropical forests helps to better understand regional differences in forest structure, diversity, composition, and dynamics. Such understanding will enable anticipation of region-specific responses to global environmental change. Modern phylogenies, in combination with broad coverage of species inventory data, now allow for global biogeographic analyses that take species evolutionary distance into account. Here we present a classification of the world's tropical forests based on their phylogenetic similarity. We identify five principal floristic regions and their floristic relationships: (i) Indo-Pacific, (ii) Subtropical, (iii) African, (iv) American, and (v) Dry forests. Our results do not support the traditional neo- versus paleotropical forest division but instead separate the combined American and African forests from their Indo-Pacific counterparts. We also find indications for the existence of a global dry forest region, with representatives in America, Africa, Madagascar, and India. Additionally, a northern-hemisphere Subtropical forest region was identified with representatives in Asia and America, providing support for a link between Asian and American northern-hemisphere forests.

Abstract

Electronic waste (e-waste) contains heavy metals, which pose enormous human health risks if not properly handled. Evidence shows that the unsafe and crude practices at recycling sites expose workers to several short – and long-term health risks. Considering that different activities pose different risks, this paper examined the health perceptions and attitudes of workers along the e-waste treatment continuum in two informal recycling sites in Ghana; Agbogbloshie (Accra) and Dagomba Line (Kumasi). Using semi-structured interviews with 255 workers, the findings show that workers generally are aware of the "physical" risks associated with their practices but perceived the associated health risks as a normal incident, which required no intervention. Cases of cuts, headache, burns, dizziness, fatigue and muscle pains were the most reported ailments. Knowledge of health risks was obtained by chance and was not activity-dependent. Few of the workers generally use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adopted safe recycling methods. The use of PPE was influenced by several factors but most importantly awareness of health risks and the type of activity a worker undertakes. This paper therefore calls for continuous training and risk communication on associated risks of unsafe practices and the need to use appropriate PPE. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

L’échantillonnage en boule de neige a été utilisé et a permis d’interroger, à l’aide de guides d’entretien 13 tradipraticiens locaux, 3 récolteurs et 17 herboristes. Les résultats ont révélé que les acteurs de cette filière, majoritairement des hommes, entretenaient des relations de coopération et qu’ils bénéficiaient de l’appui de la société civile en termes de formation et d’organisation. Les racines et les écorces de Cordyla pinnata et Detarium microcarpum étaient plus utilisées tandis que celles de Detarium senegalense étaient peu commercialisées. Les écorces, les racines et les feuilles étaient vendues entre 0,11 et 0,29Euro/100g. Une partie des écorces était transformée en poudre avant d’être commercialisée chez les herboristes entre 1,05 Euro/100g (pour Cordyla pinnata) et 1,52 Euro/100g (Detarium microcarpum). Les prix étaient plus élevés à Dakar. Les parties tirées de Cordyla pinnata étaient essentiellement utilisés contre les parasitoses intestinales tandis que celles de Detarium microcarpum et dans une moindre mesure celles de Detarium senegalense servaient à soigner les dermatoses. Les faiblesses de cette filière concernaient essentiellement l’exploitation anarchique de la ressource et la raréfaction saisonnière de certains produits tandis que l’éloignement des sites d’approvisionnement menaçait son bon fonctionnement. Abstract

Carapa procera is a wild oil tree species traditionally exploited in Mali for seed oil. Carapa oil is highly sought because of therapeutic, cosmetic, insecticidal and repellent properties. The purpose of this work was to contribute to the understanding of local practices in C. procera oil production and local perceptions related thereto. The method used was based on surveys in four production localities and tests of oil production according to the traditional processes practiced by the processors. Two methods of seed storage and oil extraction processes were identified. Women were the main actors in seed collection and oil processing. The average oil extraction efficiency from the seeds was 23.1% and varied among sites. The wet extraction process was the most efficient. In addition to socio-cultural considerations, difficulties related to technology (lack of adequate extraction equipment) and the decrease of carapa populations limit the full development of processing activities. It is necessary to undertake options to improve traditional oil production processes such as education and introduction of shea presses in order to reduce labour intensity, improve efficiency and ensure quality standards. Abstract

Artisanal small-scale mining is associated with disease, injury, environmental and social risks. These risks negatively impact human health and the environment. This study assesses miners' awareness and perceptions of the risks associated with their activity in three main districts in Ghana. Using the convenience sampling approach, 148 miners participated in the study in addition to key informant interviews and focus group discussions. The study revealed that the miners were generally not aware of the risks associated with their work. There were no statistically significant differences between the miners' socio-economic characteristics and disease, environmental and social risks. However, the study showed significant differences between the miners' level of education and awareness of injury risk. A common perception among 41% of the miners was that death in artisanal small-scale mining was normal. It is recommended that relevant state institutions empower miners through training and education to enhance their knowledge of risks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is twofold: to explore the factors influencing the emergence and growth of informal e-waste activities and to examine workers' motivation for involvement in informal e-waste activities. Semi-structured interviews and observations among actors in the recently established Dagomba-Line e-waste site in Kumasi, Ghana were employed to gather relevant data. Emergence and growth of e-waste activities are largely influenced by spatial, political, socio-cultural and economic factors. The reuse and open disposal of e-waste are the common practices due to the cost of transportation to a final disposal site. Similar to findings at the well-established Agbogbloshie e-waste site, also in Ghana, scavengers are found at the bottom of the e-waste financial ladder. The major motivating factor for engaging in e-waste handling is poverty. Additionally, some respondents mentioned the lucrative nature of the activity, landlessness, and peer influence as a motivation. The results showed that younger workers (below 35 years) were more likely to be engaged in the activity for reasons of peer influence and poverty and major source of livelihood. The paper recommends that policy and planning should reflect ways of delivering and creating stable socio-economic conditions that promote an inclusive and sustainable development.
