Enacting critical pedagogies within physical education (PE) contexts have been found to increase critical consciousness and disrupt hegemonic taken-for-granted assumptions about ability and the body. As an under-researched area, the aim of our research was to explore the extent to which a critical pedagogical approach in PE can disrupt normative ableist notions of disability through a disability-specific, critically orientated, tennis class. Six students from a large southeastern US university chose to participate and student video narratives and reflective essays were collated as data sources. Through inductive and deductive data analysis, the key themes constructed were: (1) 'the learning journey in critical education', underpinned by the following subthemes: (i) 'initial shock', (ii) 'new experiences', and (iii) 'humbling encounters'; and (2) 'consequences of critical pedagogy', supported by (a) 'building a community through meaningful relationships', and (b) 'change in perspective'. We conclude by discussing the pedagogical potential of our critical approach.

Introduction: Even though advocacy for poststructural feminist lenses to change/challenge physical education (PE) has grown over the years, there is an evident gap in qualitative research using poetic forms of representation in PE. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to use a poststructural feminist framework to challenge a particular kind of hegemonic reproduction of PE, particularly to explore the notion of 'Joe Wicks "as" PE'. Participants and settings: Collaborative autoethnography framed this study and participants included three queer leaning female-identified early/mid-career PE teacher educators. Data collection/analysis: Over the course of eight weeks, we collected and generated a variety of texts individually and collectively. To capture our reactions, we decided to collect data around two 'prompts', namely the recorded podcast titled 'Is Joe Wicks the face of PE?' of an Association Internationale des Écoles Supérieures d'Éducation Physique (AIESEP) hosted chat, and our participation in a 9 am 'PE with Joe' session. We presented the data gathered in this project poetically. Findings: We divided the findings into two parts corresponding with our responses (collaborative autoethnographies) to the two themes, namely 'We can't fix this/that' (aka 'Banging our heads against a brick wall') and 'Joe Wicks as PE' (aka 'Feminist killjoys'). Implications: We believe that a poetic representation, in addition to nurturing and amplifying the emotional and lyrical data collected, presented an opportunity to contribute to, and extends this kind of representational style in PE. In addition to this, collaborative autoethnography allowed us as a community to advance scholarship and provides a space for collective empowerment.

Physical education teacher education is most successful when it includes several field experiences that are closely supervised and focus on reflective practice. Drawing upon attachment theory, the purpose of this study was to understand a mentoring program in which doctoral students served as mentors for preservice teachers during a methods course and early field experience. Participants included 15 preservice teachers (10 males, 5 females) who were completing their first secondary early field experience, and six doctoral students (3 males, 3 females) who served as their mentors. Data were collected through interviews with the doctoral students and preservice teachers, reflective writing, and observations of teaching. Data were analyzed using a combination of inductive and deductive analysis as well as constant comparison. Results highlight the importance of the emotional side of mentoring in building trust. Preservice teachers learned by observing their mentors and by receiving timely, relevant feedback. In some cases, challenges were noted in developing productive relationships and related to a lack of feedback stemming from mentor inexperience.

Digital technology and its use within democratic pedagogy has been an under-researched area in physical education (PE) and higher education (HE). Furthermore, we know little about how democratic assessment methods are experienced by students in HE. As such, this article explores student perceptions and experiences of democratic assessment practices through video narratives in HE PE and how these video narratives allowed students to demonstrate their learning. Using student responses from an e-questionnaire, the findings discuss how the video narratives elevate students' self-awareness, generate emotive and affective responses, elicit performative acts and provide an authentic assessment experience. In particular, the consideration of a student's environment is presented as a novel finding in comparison to previous literature. The authors discuss these findings in relation to teachers' democratic practices and video narratives as a vehicle for supporting authentic assessment experiences.

The purpose of this study was to describe sport pedagogy faculty members' (FMs) efforts at engaging in transformative physical education teacher education (T-PETE). T-PETE stresses the importance of FMs creating social change through their pedagogical approach and begins by asking preservice teachers (PTs) to reflect on their perspectives and practices (Tinning, 2017. Transformative pedagogies and physical education. In C. Ennis (Ed.), "The Routledge handbook of physical education pedagogies" (pp. 295-306). New York: Taylor & Francis; Ukpokodu, 2009. The practice of transformative pedagogy. "Journal on Excellence in College Teaching," 20(2), 43-67.). Participants were three white, female, able-bodied, lesbian/gay sport pedagogy FMs. The study was conducted in the United States. Feminist theory and feminist pedagogy drove data collection and analysis. Data were collected by employing a series of qualitative methods. An inductive and deductive analysis revealed that FMs had specific T-PETE goals, content, and pedagogies. Furthermore, several factors served to facilitate and limit the FMs' effectiveness when engaging in T-PETE. The findings suggest that program-wide PETE reform is necessary in the United States for creating social change, and influencing PTs perspectives and practices. In addition, they suggest that American PETE programs might benefit from greater diversity among the FMs who staff them.

Traditionally schools have been spaces that are punitive and have strict behavior guidelines that include zero-tolerance policies. Thus, conventional behavior management practices blame students and position them as rule-breakers. Consequently, all students, but particularly those who come from complex backgrounds, minority groups, and vulnerable home situations, are forced into harsh disciplinary regimes increasing their trauma. However, restorative practice was introduced to re-envision practices in schools to become more holistic, harmonious, emotionally intelligent spaces and take into consideration the real lives of young people. The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of what restorative practice is and the research carried out in physical education around this important topic. Further, we will present how restorative practice can be used in health and physical education settings in order to break away from traditional behavior management techniques and challenge the status quo for a more equitable, social, and emotional norm in trauma-invested schools today.

Education professionals are morally compelled to ensure that all students feel accepted, safe, and are represented in their classes. Physical education is no different; however, specific practitioner-orientated strategies to embark in more socially just practices are scarce in physical education literature. This article provides the first part of an A-Z of social justice education series where practitioners are provided with examples of socially just physical education practices and ideas for use within classes. As an example, the letter A (Ability) unpacks the hyper-focus physical education programs have placed on physical abilities and the need to be ability aware in all domains within the subject. Thus, it is essential that we prioritize a holistic and well-versed program for all students despite their abilities. Resources for each letter are provided where educators can find more information.

Education has the ability to both reproduce and transform broader social structures. Yet, teachers' responsibilities are constantly increasing whilst budgets, resources, and staffing are depleted. We argue that we are living in a time of great uncertainty and precarity. As physical educators, we should make attempts to be socially conscious of this precarity and provide equitable environments for all students. This article (the second installment of a two-part series) is an attempt to make an important step in enacting a socially just and informed physical education program. In so doing, we highlight specific ways that teachers and teacher educators can prepare for and teach about precarity in physical education. By providing resources, readings, and examples from practice, we provide a framework that promotes ethics of value, care, and zeal for others. [For Part 1 of the series, see EJ1254389.]

Background: Higher education (HE) physical education (PE) can provide opportunities for students to develop meaning(s) and value(s) towards movement experiences. However, it is an under researched area in the educational sphere and little is known about what or how students find, meaningful movement. While there has been increasing interest in the features of meaningful PE, few studies have explored how they relate to students' experiences of movement in the context of HE or, the meaning held for certain features such as 'fun'. In seeking to address this gap, the purpose of this article was to explore what university students found meaningful in PE. Method: Using data from a larger digital ethnographic study, this research featured six students studying a university PE class taught by an educator with a sociocultural perspective towards education and movement. Digital video narratives and reflective essays served as qualitative data and were analysed using collaborative thematic analysis. Findings: Four themes are described in relation to students' meaningful experiences. These are, (a) meaningful PE is fun and contains elements of delight, (b) meaningful PE is a combination of fun and challenge, (c) meaningful PE develops motor competency in personally relevant areas and (d) meaningful PE is a social and personally relevant experience. Our findings demonstrate the interlinking nature of meaningful PE features and, specifically, how they are embodied by HE students. Conclusion: We argue that students can have meaningful PE experiences, even when educators do not plan for them. Furthermore, the features of meaningful PE, particularly in relation to 'fun', can extend to university settings. Moreover, sociocultural educators with a clear vision for classes can contribute to students developing foundational beliefs towards movement. This is exhibited through employing democratic pedagogies such as high levels of reflection and goal setting.

The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of one sociocultural foundations class taught by Florence, a teacher educator, on the perspectives and practices of two physical education preservice teachers (PTs), Michael and Bob. Within a narrative inquiry approach, data sources were nonparticipant observation, intraviews, conversations, exit slips, digital interactions, responses to three fictional physical education teaching scenarios, a fictional curriculum outline, three stimulated recall interviews, documents, and various forms of visual data. Theoretical thematic analysis was employed to work with and make sense of the data. Findings indicated that both PTs faced frustration and discomfort during class. Nevertheless, the class resonated and raised the PTs' critical awareness of sociocultural issues related to physical education. Key reasons for the apparent success of the class were the deinstitutionalizing pedagogical methods employed by Florence and Florence's "problem-posing" education which prompted the PTs to question their perspectives and assumptions about society and culture.

What is missing in present-day physical education teacher education research is the individual female doctoral student perspective and how individuals come to understand academic research culture within the neoliberal university. Through a critical autoethnography, this paper uncovered a transformative learning journey of one doctoral student as she encountered the field of research in higher education. After taking a critically orientated qualitative methods class, the doctoral student recognised that the neoliberal university includes a research agenda entwined in politics, finding that neophyte researchers should be aware of the 'mess' (Cheek, J. (2017). Qualitative inquiry, research marketplaces, and neoliberalism. In N. K. Denzin, & M. D. Giardina (Eds.), "Qualitative Inquiry in Neoliberal Times" (pp. 19-36). New York: Routledge). By questioning how one is disciplined in research and through becoming aware of normalising techniques, the doctoral student interrogated her research methods and philosophical orientation. Ethnodrama (Denzin, N. K. (2010). "The qualitative manifesto." Walnut Creek: Left Coast Press) and autoethnography provided the doctoral student with an opportunity for alternate meaning-making, which can be productive in understanding the journey of becoming in academia.

Background: Teaching for social good and inequity has been presented as needed in sport pedagogy research. However, very little is known how transformative pedagogical practices that teach for social good are implemented and sustained at the elementary level. Purpose: This digital ethnographic study sought to describe one elementary school physical education (PE) teacher's attempt to employ transformative pedagogy (TP). Method: Cochran-Smith's [1998. "Teaching for Social Change: Toward a Grounded Theory of Teacher Education." In "The International Handbook of Educational Change," edited by A. Hargreaves, A. Lieberman, M. Fullan, and D. Hopkins, 916-952. Netherlands: Kluwer Academic Publishers, 2004. "Walking the Road: Race, Diversity, and Social Justice in Teacher Education." New York: Teachers College Press] pedagogical principles for social justice education (SJE) drove our data collection and analysis. Seven qualitative methods were employed to collect data about Harry's pedagogies, organizational structures, and the content he taught. These were formal and informal interviews, conversations, short films, document collection, social media accounts, and an electronic journal. Data were analyzed using both inductive and deductive methods [Patton 2015. "Qualitative Research and Evaluation Methods." 4th ed. Thousand Oaks: Sage]. Findings: Harry's TP and the factors that facilitated and limited his practice were uncovered within five main themes: (a) creating communities of learners through restorative practice principles, (b) building on what students bring to school with them for a democratic curriculum, (c) teaching skills, bridging gaps, and the affective component, (d), working with communities in-between social justice illiteracy, and (e) utilizing diverse forms of assessment. Conclusion: We confirmed that there is no best way to teach social justice through PE and that TP must be individual to the teacher. In addition, this study highlighted methods and pedagogies by which teachers could engage in TP. Finally, the study's findings implied how teacher educators might go about working with both preservice and inservice PE teachers with the goal that they focus on facilitating social justice through their pedagogical approach.

In higher education, doctoral training has been identified as a process of stewardship development whereby individuals learn the knowledge and skills required to advance their respective disciplines. Self-study of teacher education practices is one approach that has gained the interest of doctoral students to help them understand their own development whilst also forging recommendations for others in publications. In this self-study, we worked to understand the experiences of Shrehan, a teacher from England beginning doctoral study in the USA. Shrehan had no experience teaching at the college level prior to moving to the USA, and she saw self-study as an opportunity to understand her development and acculturation into an unfamiliar system of higher education. Data were collected through journaling, critical-friend discussions, and artefacts, as well as student data in the form of surveys, exit slips, and focus-group interviews. Qualitative data analysis of Shrehan's experiences was guided by the four stages of acculturation theory -- honeymoon, culture shock, adjustment, and recovery. Shrehan's journey emphasizes the importance of getting to know undergraduate students and building rapport as key aspects of teaching at the college level. Self-study provided Shrehan with a heightened personal-identity awareness that increased her cultural sensitivity and broadened her worldview. Results are discussed with reference to acculturation theory and future directions for research are provided.
