2. Non-diffusive transport in plasma turbulence: a fractional diffusion approach

Abstract

Numerical evidence of non-diffusive transport in three-dimensional, resistive pressure-gradient-driven plasma turbulence is presented. It is shown that the probability density function (pdf) of test particles' radial displacements is strongly non-Gaussian and exhibits algebraic decaying tails. To model these results we propose a macroscopic transport model for the pdf based on the use of fractional derivatives in space and time, that incorporate in a unified way space-time non-locality (non-Fickian transport), non-Gaussianity, and non-diffusive scaling. The fractional diffusion model reproduces the shape, and space-time scaling of the non-Gaussian pdf of turbulent transport calculations. The model also reproduces the observed super-diffusive scaling.

Abstract

The use of reaction-diffusion models rests on the key assumption that the underlying diffusive process is Gaussian. However, a growing number of studies have pointed out the prevalence of anomalous diffusion, and there is a need to understand the dynamics of reactive systems in the presence of this type of non-Gaussian diffusion. Here we present a study of front dynamics in reaction-diffusion systems where anomalous diffusion is due to the presence of asymmetric Levy flights. Our approach consists of replacing the Laplacian diffusion operator by a fractional diffusion operator, whose fundamental solutions are Levy $\alpha$-stable distributions. Numerical simulation of the fractional Fisher-Kolmogorov equation, and analytical arguments show that anomalous diffusion leads to the exponential acceleration of fronts and a universal power law decay, $x^{-\alpha}$, of the tail, where $\alpha$, the index of the Levy distribution, is the order of the fractional derivative., Comment: New version. 6. Performance of a plasma fluid code on the Intel parallel computers

Abstract

One approach to improving the real-time efficiency of plasma turbulence calculations is to use a parallel algorithm. A parallel algorithm for plasma turbulence calculations was tested on the Intel iPSC/860 hypercube and the Touchtone Delta machine. Using the 128 processors of the Intel iPSC/860 hypercube, a factor of 5 improvement over a single-processor CRAY-2 is obtained. For the Touchtone Delta machine, the corresponding improvement factor is 16. For plasma edge turbulence calculations, an extrapolation of the present results to the Intel (sigma) machine gives an improvement factor close to 64 over the single-processor CRAY-2.
